Bad cop, even worse cop.
BA_Harrison2 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A French remake of the Korean film A Hard Day (2014), Restless stars Franck Gastambide as Thomas, a somewhat 'dirty' cop whose day goes from bad to worse after he accidentally runs over a man. Instead of reporting the incident, he plonks the body in the boot of his car and attempts to dispose of it via a rather convoluted method involving a toy soldier, some balloons, and his recently deceased mother's coffin. What he doesn't realise is that the dead man was a drug dealer who kept a key to a vault full of money stuck up his butt, and a really bad cop by the name of Marelli (Simon Abkarian) will do whatever it takes to get his hands on it.

What follows is rather preposterous, but enjoyable nonetheless, director Régis Blondeau achieving a fair amount of tension from his admittedly silly scenarios. Uncomfortable scenes involve the dead man's phone ringing at inopportune moments from inside Thomas's mother's coffin, a fight in a toilet cubicle (Thomas getting his head forced down the pan), an investigation by Thomas's colleagues into the hit-and-run incident, and an edge-of-the-seat countdown of some C4 explosive. There's also the rather yucky scene in which Thomas must retrieve the key from the dead man's butt -- thankfully we are spared the graphic details.

At the end of the film, almost everything that Thomas has done is brushed under the carpet by his superiors, which is a tad far-fetched (or is it?), but the very last scene is a sure-fire crowd-pleaser: having quit the force and donated his severance pay to his best friend's widow, Thomas's suffering finally pays off big time.

6/10. Not unmissable, but certainly entertaining.

Watchable ... Not great
imranahmedsg25 February 2022
A decent French police action film. The film has its moments of nail biting excitement along with action scenes. There is even the odd plot twist from time to time.

To be sure, it's not a top notch film. Nonetheless, if you're looking for a passable action film to while away a couple of hours then Restless fits the bill.

Exact copy of "A Hard Day" (2014). And this copy is inferior to the original. Bummer.
imseeg11 March 2022
Not any good? The story is wild and bizarre. And it gets better along the way, with even more suspenseful twists and turns.

The bad: unfortunately this French Netflix movie is an exact copy of "A Hard Day", a South Korean movie. And this French copy is inferior to the original. Why? Because of mediocre acting. These French actors aint bad, but they are simply a bit bland, while the South Korean movie had great acting performances, with a terrific bad guy. None of that in this bland Netflix copy.

Only "recommended" for those folks who absolutely prefer to hear French language, instead of South Korean.

The French give me the crêpes. *slaps knee*
Top_Dawg_Critic29 July 2022
Apparently this is the French remake of a Korean film, A Hard Day. French cinematographer Régis Blondeau makes his writing and directing debut with this film, and considering it's his first film, it wasn't all that bad. His directing was decent, but his writing had continuity issues, was convoluted, and the slow pacing made the normally comfortable 95 min runtime feel like over 2 hours. Otherwise the little action there was, was solid, with great casting and performances. It's a decent one-time watch if your craving a cop/crime thriller.

Give this a try

This is a decent effort. Corrupt cops that we somehow root for, this movie starts off well and delivers a good story. OK, we have to suspend belief at times but all in all this is well worth a watch.

Originalité ?
tommyh-2567225 February 2022
Since when french cinema had to make a remake of a movie to "tell" a story ?? What a disappointment ! I wish i watched the original one first, the Korean version, u must be stupid or brainless to try to remade a Korean movie, u ll never catch the atmosphere & the dna of it. Its a pity to waste the energy of such actors as Simon Abkarian & Gastambide.

Surprisingly good

Netflix presented another good French action movie.

It was entertaining with funny cool scenes. The story was fast paced and it was never boring. The actors played their roles solidly and I liked each character of them. Congrats to all the staff and for the high cinematography quality. Watch it and spend an amazing evening. 6/10.

Waste of my time. Quickly made and not well thought out movie with a poor reasoning! Some things just don't equate with this movie. Moving on to the next one. Next time try to think of a plot that makes since.

Black comedy successfully morphs into mystery thriller as hapless police detective takes down psychopathic boss
Turfseer2 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Restless is the French remake of the 2014 South Korean film A Hard Day. In reading the plot summary it looks like director Régis Blondeau pretty much reproduced the same plot and characters transposed in this case to France.

Our "hero" is Thomas (Franck Gastambide), a corrupt police detective who we gradually come to sympathize with despite a significant number of flaws. The hapless but somehow charming Thomas manages to consistently evade the long arm of the law throughout the narrative despite his many fax paus including engaging in illegal drug dealing (he keeps a load of drug money inside his locker).

Restless begins as a black comedy. Thomas leaves his own mother's funeral to return to his precinct where a squad of internal affairs officers are about to blow the lid off his shady operation. Fortunately his best friend and fellow officer Marc (Michael Abitebol) along with his fiancée, officer-in-training Naomi (Tracy Goatas) flush all the drug proceeds down the toilet saving Thomas from ruin.

On the way back to the precinct while driving his car, Thomas hits a man and kills him who appears out of nowhere on the side of the road. The black comedy aspect becomes even more bizarre when Thomas returns to the funeral home and places the dead body inside his mother's casket. There's even more crazy goings on when the dead man's cell phone begins ringing at the mother's funeral.

The story then morphs into a mystery thriller when Thomas suddenly gets a call from an unknown man who seems to be aware that the beleaguered detective was responsible for killing the man with his vehicle and then burying the body in the casket.

As it turns out the mysterious man is the psychopathic Chief of Narcotics Marelli (Simon Abkarian) who orders Thomas to retrieve a key which is inside the body of the man whom Thomas killed. The dead man was a drug partner of Marelli whom he killed after double crossing Marelli over drug proceeds.

Now this is the only part of the script where I had trouble understanding what really was going on. If Marelli wants to get his hands on that special key, why doesn't he kill the partner where he can easily retrieve it? Instead he shoots the man who gets away long enough to be struck by Thomas' car. When Thomas becomes involved, that complicates things for Marelli significantly.

Marelli proves to be the monster of the piece and ends up killing Thomas' buddy Marc by arranging for a giant storage container to fall on his car while he's inside of it. By now we are no longer in black comedy territory.

The final confrontation between Thomas and Marelli manages to keep you on the edge of your seat with a denouement highlighting the hero's redemption (after resigning from the force and not prosecuted by governmental authorities who wish to avoid a scandal), Thomas claims all of Morelli's drug loot saving both his daughter and sister in the process.

I enjoyed Restless impressed by all the twists and turns in the plot. I'm not sure the circumstances surrounding the break into the Second Act (when the drug dealer is killed) worked completely. Nonetheless the pacing is terrific along with the acting which will keep you engrossed throughout.

French cop having a hard day.
stickman00726 February 2022
Not sure why people don't mention the actual name of the Korean movie that inspired this French copycat.

The name of the Korean movie is- A HARD DAY- That is the English title anyway. (In case anybody wants to check it out) French crime cinema, Historically, is about the best there is I think. That's why I am a bit disappointed they did an almost carbon copy of the Korean original.

That said, about the most entertaining crime thriller I have ever seen on Netflix since my subscription began years ago is a French original titled LOST BULLET.

I heard a rumor that the producers of that instant classic were making a sequel named LOST BULLET 2.

Not the most original title I must admit, but I sure hope the rumor is true.

Highly entertaining and fun to watch
chloepitrash25 February 2022
This poor guy doesn't have a minute for himself, and watching him make bad decisions as he spirals out of control is super fun. Didn't expect this quality, to be honest, but boy is this a decent action film.

What a deception !!!
searchanddestroy-125 February 2022
Maybe Julien Leclercq would have succeeded in the making of this one. I expected far far more than this. It is light hearted for a crime movie - I don't remember having seen the original from Korea - and I had the feeling to watch a TF1 - garbage channel - stuff, destined to under fifty house wives. I waited for a dark, brutal, bloody crime flick, not this kind. Olivier Marchal would also have made something ten times better. Instead of that, It looks like a Fred Cavayé's feature, in the Hollywood style. It is supposed to show a rotten, corrupted cop; it should have been an ambivalent character, not like this one. I won't say it is a crap, because directing and action sequences are rather effective, only the story and acting are lousy; not awful, only lousy, not credible at all. Forget it.

Always do the right thing
kosmasp6 March 2022
The police - usually the ones that are supposed to be good and righteous ... the ones that are doing things by the book. But they are human too - they can be wrong, they can be bad - or just plainly do something wrongly. Having said that - as I stated above, the best thing to do would be ... not doing something bad.

But if that were the case, we would not have this quite interesting if not new concept. The thrill and the suspense of what comes next and who knows what ... the really important part is that we are able to root for our main character. And he does a really good job - so that we do care for him. It's also the script and the direction of course. But without him being charismatic ... well you wouldn't have anything to be interested in. Neat little thriller that could ... if you let it and yourself go with the flow.

Same Old wine in New Bottle

Netflix describes the movie as:After going to extremes to cover up an accident, a corrupt cop's life spirals out of control when he starts receiving threats from a mysterious witness.

There is nothing new which you have not watched nth time. It is just a time pass movie. If you have exhausted all good mystery and thrillers on Streaming websites than you can watch it otherwise there are far better thrillers and mystery movies on Netflix , Prime and Disney Hotstar.

A tale of two halves
roexpat11 July 2022
This film can be split into two: The early setup where internal affairs is investigating a corrupt cop's precint while he commits a hit and run and tries to hide the evidence, AND the mess that follows when the aforementioned cop is found out and blackmailed by an unknown caller who doesn't have time for games and prefers to ruin our viewing experience.

The first half is packed with tension and dark humor, the second is packed with a ridiculous premise and old cliches.

It will help pass the time and even entertain you, but, ultimately, it will probably leave you disappointed.

Like an extended episode of THE SHIELD (2002)
Jay_Rusty26 February 2022
In summary, this French remake of 'Ggeutggaji ganda' (2014) - which I have NOT seen - plays like an over extended episode of THE SHIELD (2002). The only difference is that THE SHIELD (2002) is very well made and very believable, whereas this movie requires huge amounts of suspension of disbelief. Watch THE SHIELD (2002) instead.

A Flawed Cop Thriller
tkdlifemagazine1 March 2022
This is a thinly scripted French film about corrupt police. The main character becomes involved in an attempt to cover up the death of a hot and when run when he becomes the subject of a blackmail scheme. Simple plot. Some interesting scenes but the basic problem is that most every character is not likable. Sometimes flawed character are imperfect but relatable. Not the case here. Dubbed into English.

Great entertaining and fun Netflix movie
playtoyer25 February 2022
At the beginning of the movie people can wonder about the mysterious dead body on the road the story is a mystery but then great thriller movie.

The director created the forms and the colors to create an atmosphere uniquely exhilarating; creating a necessity to know and find out what is going on in the story and what is the following events that it brings along with him. And then without realizing it, we suddenly get caught inside the film mistery and intrigue.

The film itself creates an environment that is grisly.

A film that slightly takes you deep inside a world of despair, revenge and anger, in search for something we are intended to understand . Once you got inside the net of this story it never lets go like a the roller-coaster lot,s of great action scenes.

I'm sure this film will be controversial because of its way of copying the original Korean movie but it,s a great remake maybe better then the original movie. It is one of those experiences that kept people on the edge of their seat the all movie.

Also great cast, great director, great plot, a great Netflix thriller movie .

Almost acceptable, but plot makes it not recommendable
gabriel_sanchez13 June 2022
Sans Répit (Restless, in the USA) uses a common formula to drive its plot: a dirty cop covers up his dirty deed and gets threatened by a witness. We follow Thomas, a lieutenant from the Criminal District, whose following hours are a mess. Talk about getting into one problem after problem. When Thomas thinks he is done with one, he stumbles into another problem.

The movie is alright, but you won't find anything new here. This dirty cop's redemption story has been done multiple times.

Thomas' district is corrupt, including himself. It is implied that they do it because of their low salaries. They take bribes to allow criminal activities. There is this one subplot where Internal Affairs is investigating the policemen, but this subplot gets dismissed for the master plot. The master plot is that Thomas ended up in a messy situation, and now someone is threatening him. But Thomas is kinda dumb, and this, to me, is the main problem in this movie: the main character is not likable.

Throughout the movie, we see Thomas jumping from mess to mess like a frightened kitten. I don't mind that he is a dirty cop; it makes for a cool redemption plot if done right, but this movie does not hit the spot for me. The relationship between Thomas and his friend, Marc, is not used in the movie, but rather when it is convenient. The reason is a stupid fight about one talking about one's mom while the other replies about one's wife. So you are left with dumb Thomas trying to cover up his mess while also trying to get on top of the guy that is using him.

Thomas' plan to hide his mess was such a dumb and tense scene that I was not sure what was I watching. There were so many different ways he could cover up his stuff; instead, he goes with the most non-sense one. It was obvious that that would backfire.

Close to the end of the movie, you, of course, get Mister Expositional Guy explaining the whole plot. The one dude that knows everything. I guess plots nowadays are like this: you get a situation that evolves into a complicated line. Then, you get one loose end that connects all the dots at once. And then you need a final scene to wrap it all up. The first Fantastic Beasts movie is exactly like that; this movie is too.

Was it bad? Nope. Was it good? Nope. I guess it's one movie to watch once if you have nothing better to do (or watch.)

Real life cops
filmbuff9241 March 2022
Fun tough action flick.

A little over the top at times, but that doesn't bother me, I find that entertaining.

I like that all cops in this movie are corrupt to the bones. Selling drugs, taking bribes, teaming up with criminals, forging evidence, hit and run, killing each other, their lockers full of drug money and coke - like in real life !

I loved it.
