It was a fairytale series and the story of this series was Ji chang wook

I really like the show. It's a beauty to have it in a musical style. The acting is very good. I don't know what to say to Mr. Ji chang wook in particular. He was so sweet. He's like a child. This show has made me feel better and I'm happy to watch it. I'm sorry about my bad English.

Surprisingly Incredible
kvraaah8 May 2022
There was an unexpected charm to this show that I can't quite put my finger on. Honestly, when I watched the trailer, I wasn't even one bit interested. I can't believe I didn't know it was a musical until I saw it on my Netflix homepage this morning. I think that's what drew me to watching it: I'd never seen a musical K-Drama before, and especially with Ji Chang-wook and Hwang In-yeop, I practically leaped at the play button.

Annara Sumanara is a joyful drama: it's beautiful and magical; nostalgic and astounding. I honestly don't have anything to say about that because I finished it only a few minutes ago. I've barely even processed the ending. The songs are quite good and the episodes are each very interesting and immersive. If I was a bit younger and didn't rush to finish the show in one day, it probably would've been 10/10 for me. I think it's a must-watch, for sure!

Great Watch, Beautiful and Breathtaking
arunnsh6 May 2022
I loved the show and the story. Great performances by everyone. Hwang In-Yeop shines as Na Il-deung and impresses with his acting skills and portrays his character and his various emotions with finesse, Choi Sung-eun as Yoon Ah-yi delivers an amazing performance and shines in her role. Ji Chang-Wook as the wizard Lee Eul is just amazing, he does justice to his role and impresses you with his skills. Nam Da-reum as the young Lee Eul also delivers a very strong performance and impresses you with his acting skills. Overall a wonderfully acted series with some very strong performances.

All in all a great show to watch. Very feel good, walks you through various human emotions and stories. Only issue I can think of is that it can be a little bit slow paced at times. But even with that accounted for this is a GEM of a Show and is definitely a must watch.

Since when this world has become a place where even dreams have to meet a standard?
hanalisss7 May 2022
Korean dramas keep getting better and better, I am in love of how they are trying new things and going away from typical cliché storylines.

This is such a beautiful story and it is so brilliantly written.

Started so weird that I kept wondering where it was going, nothing made sense but it did at the same time! All the scenes are so colorful and stimulating and the performances are just outstanding.

You will go through all the emotions watching this and it is very raw. Even though some of the themes are used often in kdrama they managed to explore it in such a different light it feels very refreshing.

I also enjoyed the songs it gave me La la land vibes and I actually think it was well executed.

I am a big fan of Ji Chang Wook and I have literally watched all of his work, he just keeps surprising me with his awesome acting! I thought the girl( Choi Sung Eun, which I didn't know before) Was fantastic as well and Hwang In Youp did great with this role.

Watch it, you won't regret it!

Ji Chang Wook charm and magic freakingly worked.
Definitely can't dislike this drama because of Magical, touching and Ji Chang Wook charming face. Great acting from main cast Ji Chang Wook, Hwang In Yeop, Choi Song Eun. Just 6 Episodes will make you forget about reality and makes you believe in magic. Not only worth watching but it also has memorable moments.

I thought Ji Chang Wook should have got more screen time. Damn when he says "Do you believe in... Magic ?" it's freakingly cuuuuute.... Story somewhat predictable. But Ji Chang Wook s emotions, handsome face will knock you out.

It's Wookie's charm and magical battle, fighting.

best kdrama of all time
reyesantos-529767 May 2022
The drama should be nominated in oscars acadamy awards. This was honestly an amazing experience. Definitely one of the most creative and visually stunning dramas I've ever seen. Feels like it was made to binge and just lose yourself in.

Keep believing and going no matter what
witra_as9 June 2022

Give me anything with magic, circus and magicians, and Ji Chang Wook on top of that, life is good. Is a musical but is worth it. Six episodes with some wholesomeness along. Do you believe in magic? I do and I hope by the end you too.

Tries to be magical
amwilburn-601311 August 2022
And almost is, but not quite. The female lead (Choi Sung Eun, who was great in "Beyond Evil") was just too lost, doe eyed & perpetually confused. The actor who plays the magician was quite good.

A whimsical fantasy musical that almost works, just that Choi's voice wasn't really suited to singing.

At least it wasn't dull.

Loved it!
aradiamoon7 May 2022
It's been awhile that I've watched something that was different from the usual shows. The message it gives to people that no matter how much life brings you down, smile even if it's for a little awhile. Smiling, laughing, even having imagination takes you away from the hardships in life. It's not going to change your life or the obstacles that make living difficult. But, even for a second to get away from it helps you at the moment in time when you need it the most. Never forget the little things that bring happiness. That little bit will bring a light in darkness. Do you believe in magic? Even if it's not the reality of life. There is magic everywhere. I loved this kdrama.

Worthy effort of being enjoyable, but not memorable
pranayjalvi7 May 2022
The Sound of Magic was one of the more eagerly awaited k-dramas of 2022, that had something different to offer than the rest of the shows.

The drama could have offered more, had it not been restricted to 6 episodes. It has lovely visuals, solid performances, impressive song-and-dance numbers, and oodles of charm. Although what I would have loved to see more in the drama was the narrative, which I felt was not much effective.

The Sound of Magic has six episodes, and while they're long, it sometimes feels like 10 or 12 would have better served the show's ambition. Nonetheless, the drama is an enjoyable watch, if not memorable.

My Rating : 7/10.

Tear dripping drama about life, hardship, broken dreams and a little magical comfort!
audkt8 May 2022
The Sound of Magic isn't an ordinary K-drama, it's filmed based upon the popular webtoon Annarasumanara (meaning abracadabra), by Ha Il-kwon (written in 2010).

The songs are written to better explain more of the character's emotions and are a refreshing feature, sung by the actors themselves.

The story is deep and full of symbols and metaphors, it will make many viewers think back to their own childhood dreams, or look at their adult life now compared to what they thought it would be like when they were young. Most of us should be able to comprehend the message of this drama, even if we haven't had the same struggles.

Prejudice is strong everywhere for those that falls outside "the norm" of the society. Maybe we all should stop and think for a moment why that person lives his/her life like they do, there's always a reason. For instance, why does the magician Lee Eul, a grown up man, live in an abandoned amusement park? Why doesn't he get himself a decent job? Maybe he knows real magic, or is the magic happening inside girl and the boys heads? But if the magician makes them feel better and gives them comfort in this world, helps them overcome their struggles and gives them happiness and maybe new dreams, isn't that real magic too?

I warmly recommend The Sound of Magic to everyone, but be aware of that this is not a cozy "Disney-like drama", you need to use your head to understand what the dramas characters is trying to tell you. The magician, the girl and the boy, seems like they don't have anything in common at first, besides being 3 sad and lonely souls. The magician seems happy with his life, but is he really? You can see tears comes to his eyes many times during the drama. Watch the drama and see for yourself, it's up to each and one of us to determine if we believe in the magic or not!

The magician Lee Eul is played by one of South Koreas best actors, Ji Chang Wook.

Very true to source material
isabella-0609715 May 2022
I'm gonna be straight with y'all, I don't watch Korean TV. I don't get it, I don't like it, I don't watch it. The only reason I watched Annarasumanara, is because I read the comic, and the comic is bomb.

This show did the comic justice in every way I could've wanted (other than the obvious lack of really odd heads on some characters that apparently didn't translate to TV).

I thought the acting was superb, the visuals were awesome, and the casting was spot on.

My only problem was the musical aspect, but that's more of a personal thing as I really don't care for musicals.

I wholeheartedly recommend!

Another Underrated Kdrama for no reason
bougiadaa13 August 2022
To tell you the truth i did not expect this kdrama to charm me so much !

I really liked the way actors and actress support their roles . Also this kdrama offer good messages to the viewers just in 6 eps !

They did not overdo it with the supernatural thing and the end was not that bad , it was quite intersting ( there are a lot of reviews in imdb that consider the end as a disaster... i do not think so )

The only thing i did not really enjoyed was the soundrack . I know this series is a musical but the lyrics and the melody were not something special and the songs were taking quite a long time to end .. Finally there are some boring scenes that i would like not to exist .

This show is obviously really underrated without reason . I REALLY RECOMMEND THIS TO YOU you won't regert it !

A netflix original series with disney magic

Not a fan of musical but its okay in terms of the plot. Casts were okay. Sound scores are mediocre. The use of the disney musical formula doesnt work for me. Might work on others, so recommended.

The music and video are excellent, and Ji Chang-wook's acting is also excellent. I think I saw a musical. I keep listening to the OST.

Rieul's magic comforted me, too. Thanks!

Good Enough
PennyReviews20 October 2022
Korean Drama " The Sound of Magic " is a musical drama, unique to a Korean series.

It has some magical moments, blended in with the well-known melodrama that the Kdrama master at. It also portrays a sweet first love story, as well as some family and friendship dynamics. The musical acts, in addition, were all well-acted and nicely presented, as well as smoothly choreographed.

However, the drama, and even though it tried hard, wasn't as magical as the webtoon, nor as dark as the original material.

On the other hand, the performances were all great from everyone in the cast.

So, overall, six out of ten.

Celebrating a different way to live through trauma with a fantasy and childlike innocence. A masterpiece that sets another high standard in Musical genre
florawfy11 May 2022
We have waited for The Sound of Magic to be released for so long, but it did not disappointed us at all. It is real acting, real talents shown by all the actors and actress. Ji Chang Wook has put in so much talents to performing this musical, practicing magic for three months before the acting, and the graphics of production are all very well executed. It has set another HIGH standard for Korean drama especially in the musical genre.

Technically crafted

I am very fascinated about how they merge the flying silhouettes of Ah Yi and Lee Eul in their song. There are lots of technical image combinations, how they "move" things to make it look magical in post production. There are so many combined shots together to create one shot. The flying horses in the sky, the dramatic disappearance and reappear of objects with Lee Eul's magical and swiftly moved hands. The drama music also have a taste of Disney classic music dreamy style. Especially the merry go round song, where Lee Eul and Ah Yi fly into the sky with their horses, that scene, reminds me of the classical Aladdin and Jasmine singing in the sky on the carpet.

Smooth transitions

Of course on top of it, I admire the talents of both actor and actresses. Ah Yi sings very well while crying and have emotional expression. Ji Chang Wook smiles so beautiful and sings so well. Real talents. The graphic is also a good representation of the original WEBTOON. I have read the WEBTOON before watching this, and It feels very similar in some ways. Very glad they choose this drama to be performed in a musical form, so it leaves the stage more exaggerated and more "unrealistic" and surreal for the audience to imagine the fantasy, the transition between reality vs dreamy songs. It takes you to the next space of fantasy and then gently brings us back to the brokenness of the world with a lingering feeling of hurt and sadness. Praise to the production and camera team. Very well thought out.

Lee Eul: Celebrating The Counter-cultural way to live

The whole premise of Lee Eul's lifestyle does leave you into feeling the fantasy, helps you think outside of the desperate situations you are in, and helps you to think beyond what dreams means. He chooses to be an escapist in the real world which demanded him something he failed to live up to. And somehow Lee Eul was able to find his own dream, peace, joy (Ji Chang Wook smiles a lot in this role) in his magic. He is the character that others admire and want to be, as he has something the rest of the world doesn't. He does not need to live up to anyone's standard.

The other character of Ill Dueng also parallel portraits the old life of Lee Eul. Why is Ill Deung trying to meet his parents' dreams but not his? Why is his own dream not considered a good dream? Why is he studying so much to do something he didn't enjoy? It was a celebration at the end that he was somehow breakthrough from his own asphalt road.

Love the quote by Lee Eul, "You should do what you want, as much as the things you you don't want." That is a very provoking thought to live. We tried so hard to live up to others' standard and expectations, but often we forget about the joy of life, what we also enjoy for our own. As much as the society praises behaviors of sacrificing for others, I love that SOM celebrates the concept of "taking care of ourselves", "enjoying the things we are pleased", even if it is simple pleasure - like learning magic. It is reminding us, in order to love others, we shall love ourselves first.

Stage and Reality

The ending scene on stage was one of my favorites, it makes you feel like a real musical performed on stage, it reminds the audience, this whole drama is not just a drama on screen, but it could be an on-stage performance. The magician's stage is the stage. We, as audience are watching the whole show as spectators. The way it ended, leave us celebrate every moment in life as if we can live in the fantasy.

Overall, this is not another typical Korean drama of a poor girl meeting some handsome rich guy and has all her problems solved. This is not about that. At the end, Ah-Yi realized the magician did not solve all of the problems she had in life. Yet, she has grown up. She has grown up in a way that breaks her stereotypes of how the society expects ones' life should be like, and she is able to enjoy life while enduring the reality of challenges. Because she believes in herself (not just "magic"). This is a fantasy show that inspires us to live through the tragedy and hardship of life, with a childhood innocent, with a sense of self-love, and with an attitude of playfulness. It brings the audience to fantasize, yet, gives us courage to go back to reality to face real challenges.

It is a worth celebrating master piece of Ji Chang Wook. He has shown us yet another side of him other than actions and simple romance genres, but a complex emotional magician, who is hurt yet, able to have fun in life. We look forward to hear more of his songs and just want to reply it again and again! The most talented, well versed actor and singer of Korea.

Good story, easy to binge
I binged this in a day. It was a bit slow in the middle, as most series are. It was still enjoyable and it did have little twists here and there which made my keep on guessing and wanting to watch more. I'd welcome a second season if they wanted to do that!!

Very creative drama with good casting and music however towards the end the English translation had more offensive "f" words than I ever remember in a drama. It really ruined the whole show for me!

It's good and I like it but I'll not recomend to all people.
zinemamoviemedia1 June 2022
The Sound of Magic contains musical and magical elements. That's will be a wonderful show if the creator uses it well. And I think it's a "half wonderful". It's not memorable neither the story nor the music. Maybe because the story also have a burden to bring deep issue that make this "must-joyful" show to "joyful-but-also-dark" show.
