Faulty but fun
tomfsloan1 September 2021
Deadly Mom Retreat. Another single, divorcee, or soon to be divorced woman movie. It must be a Lifetime rule. Another rule, does every movie have to have someone allergic to peanuts? The epipen is always missing. Rule number three: do all the friends have to overact and be so giggly?

Did they have to have to dreadfully long obligatory confession at the end? About the final chase scene and climax ...stupid. Notice the pose of the woman after she fell...typical Family Guy pose. On the plus side: real snow! Even though it was midi, John Obercain's musical score was decently above average. As most of these movies are, full of criticism, they are still fun to watch. This was fun too.

An unexpected twist of a movie!!!

Jules and her gal pals, Marissa and Karen, go to a weekend retreat called The Lodge to mingle and get away from stuff. Jules meets Zack who likes her but another woman named Georgia is also interested. Gradually, strange things start to happen to Jules with no explanation and we don't know who or why? You will be surprised at what happens. I sure was. Definitely recommended and would watch again.

Warning: Spoilers
Almost from the beginning I knew Christina Cox was the villain and about half an hour towards the end I guessed that she was Claire, Tom's ex-girlfriend. I did not like the ending though, because it seemed Tom genuinely wanted to put the family back together and had even broken things off with Claire. Jules should have gone back together with Tom and lived together as a family with their daughter Rosalie. For that the movie gets -2 from me!

Desperate Ex-Houswives

Warning: Spoilers
The focus of "Deadly Mom Retreat" is on the young architect Jules, who is in the process of divorcing her husband Tom. Jules gets linked up with the Cherry Creek Singles Club. In the scenes depicting the club's meetings, there are hardly any men present, even during the elaborately planned retreat in the mountains. Rather, the club seems to be populated primarily with desperate ex-housewives, including the three amigas of Jules, Marissa, and Karen.

The film was a flop in large part due to the glacial pacing. Long stretches of dead air elapse between the characters' dialogue. The space is often filled with beautiful natural environments, which seem oddly out of place in the context of the sordid details of the narrative.

Jules was such a pleasant young woman that it was difficult to buy into a scenario of why anyone would want to harass and try to kill her. There was also too much "over" acting in the film, and the excess was especially appalling in the melodramatic climactic scene in the forest.

The characters in the film were virtually one-dimensional. Jules' new beau Zack always sustained the same "hangdog" look and seemed to be hemming and hawing in every exchange. Jules' friend Marissa, who planned the retreat for the singles club, could be shrewish, referring to Jules as "a mess" and "pathetic." Even the film's "twist" was signaled on multiple occasions in this by-the-numbers and crudely made thriller.
