- When a woman's best friend goes missing, she must work quickly to determine whether her friend's abductor is someone close to home.
- Recently divorced Nikki is a single mom looking for a fresh start in a new town. After she befriends fellow single mom Liz, the vivacious Liz takes Nikki under her wing, even giving Nikki a job at her popular boutique. To Nikki, Liz represents everything she aims to be, and she takes Liz's advice on her career, child-rearing, and love life very seriously. She even ends a new relationship with Gavin, a charming neighbor, when Liz points out red flags Nikki didn't even know to look for. But after Liz goes missing and all signs point to Liz's jealous ex, who she was in a custody battle with, Nikki is beside herself with grief. To her surprise, Gavin becomes her rock and even helps her dig into Liz's suspicious ex to help her (and the cops) close the case. But after Liz's ex is arrested for her murder, Nikki spots new clues no one else sees that point to the true killer.
- An argument gone wrong in a storefront. When the woman tries to call the police, the argument gets physical. The man pushes her back and "accidentally" harms the woman. Blood drips down a mirror. Divorcee Nikki Hansen (Lara Jean Chorostecki) and her tween daughter, Brooke (Jaida Grace) are lost in a small town on their way to their new home. The girls are rescued by Gavin (Jamie Spilchuk), a helpful stranger. He also owns the town cafe, so he is a good person to know. Nikki and Brooke find their new home and unpack. Nikki uncovers a photo of her daughter and her dad and gives it to Brooke for her bedroom. Nikki, however, does not believe he will visit his daughter anytime soon. The next day, while exploring the town, the mother and daughter stop by a cute boutique. Nikki talks to a woman about how the shop owners are the worst. The woman turns out to be Liz Cole (Ipsita Paul) owner of "Not Your Mama's Closet." Liz is amused by Nikki and asks Brooke a lot of questions. Liz gives Nikki a discount on the dress and a job application and an appointment for an interview on Monday morning. A shadowy figure passes by Nikki's window as she fills out the application that night. Liz hires Nikki and they become fast friends. They go out for a coffee even before Nikki starts working at the store at Gavin's Cafe, "Note of Grace Coffee", a place which Liz does not frequent. Nikki learns that Liz and Gavin used to date, and that Liz has a daughter named Anna (Kayla Hutton) who is the same age as Brooke. Gavin spills coffee on Liz when he brings the check but certainly catches Nikki's eye. Near closing time at the boutique, Nikki invites Liz and her daughter to dinner. Liz ex-husband Dan Miller (Matt Wells) visits the shop in an angry mood, drops off Annas computer and argues with Liz. Gavin also stops by and brings Nikki a Celtics cross she dropped in his shop angling for a coffee date. Liz seems to have bad relationships with most of the men in town. At dinner, Brooke finds a friend in Anna. Anna argues with her mother about a college exploratory trip. Liz feels compelled to set boundaries given Dan's negative influence. Liz also tries to warn Nikki about Gavin. Both moms love wine, and they toast to new beginnings. At work, Gavin brings Nikki a coffee and invites her to a concert that Saturday night. When Liz returns from the bank, also with coffee, she shoos Gavin out. Liz seems jealous because she used to date Gavin. Liz promises Nikki that she is fine with the new budding romance provided they take things slow. On their date night, Gavin brings Brooke a guitar and forms a romantic relationship with Nikki. While out on a date, Gavin invites Nikki to his cafe for dessert. Nikki tells Gavin about her ex-husband, who is absentee. He shares that his baby died of SIDS, and his relationship with his ex-wife Violet could not survive. He sparks his relationship with Nikki by kissing her. On their one-month anniversary, Gavin buys Nikki and himself first-class tickets to Ireland. Nikki is late to work because of her coffee with Gavin. Based on her experience dating him, Liz warns Nikki that she could be being manipulated by Gavin. Gavin was jealous of Liz and tried to isolate her from her friends and family. Nikki makes excuses for Gavin and is not too concerned. That evening Gavin stops by Nikki's house uninvited with a gift of a necklace and an offer for Nikki and Brooke to move in with him. Nikki can no longer ignore the red flags when Gavin tries to do the same thing to her that Liz warned her about. She tells Gavin that she does not want a serious relationship and gives him back the airline tickets. Nikki avoids Liz at the store by cleaning, but eventually admits she ended the relationship with Gavin the previous night but is still unsure about taking Liz's advice. Liz assures her it is for the best. Nikki leaves to pick up Brooke from a guitar lesson just as Liz receives a call from her ex-husband Dan. That night Liz and Nikki connect on the phone and offer each other mutual support in their relationship difficulties. Anna shows up at Nikki's house and is concerned because Liz did not pick her up from a sleepover. Nikki rushes to the store to see if Liz is okay and finds a crime scene. Nikki finds a broken glass and Liz's phone. Gavin suddenly enters claiming to have seen Nikki's car out front. She calls 911 when she sees blood splatter on the mirror. Detective Banks (Raven Dauda) questions Nikki about Liz's evening. Nikki recounts her recent contacts with Liz and tells her that Dan was arguing with Liz when she left the shop. Nikki neglects to mention Gavin was in the shop "checking on her" before calling the police. Nikki asks Detective Banks for Anna to stay with her rather than be turned over to Dan. Nikki calls Gavin after leaving the scene. Gavin says he will do anything to help Nikki. Dan arrives the next day to pick up his daughter, but Nikki will not let him take her because she is assigned as Anna's temporary guardian. Dan and Gavin get into it and almost get physical. Even though she broke it off with Gavin, Nikki is thankful he is there for her in this difficult time. Together they speculate about what motive Dan might have to hurt Liz. Later, Anna catches Nikki researching Dan's background on the internet. Anna defends her dad's efforts to change and scolds Nikki for taking on Liz's attitude. When they are together again, Gavin admits that Liz is not the best person and seems to be cruel and controlling in her relationships and with her employees. Then Gavin implicates that Dan is involved and offers to ask his college friend a private investigator, to research Dan's background. Gavin calls Nikki late at night inviting her to the cafe in the morning to go over a discovery he has made about Dan. Then he goes to his basement where Gavin is keeping Liz tied up in loose ropes. He brings her food and locks her in the room. The next morning, Gavin shows Nikki Dan's online dating profile in which he lists himself as widowed and a blue tooth trace which shows that Dan has been near the store numerous times in the last three days. Then he takes Nikki's order for some granola for breakfast. When Gavin returns, Liz sneakily take the earring out from her ear. When he leaves, Liz tries to unlock her handcuffs with her earring. It almost works until she drops it. Nikki starts to look suspicious when the Detective Banks shows her Liz's will that states Nikki is the conservator for Anna's inheritance and estate which includes the store. The Detective requests that Nikki come into the police station for further questioning and urges Nikki to consult an attorney. Gavin offers to surveil Dan to try to help Liz. Dan, however, is next Gavin's hit list and Nikki realizes it when she is on the phone with Gavin as Anna dials her father because she is worried that she has not answered her calls. Dan lies injured on the floor. Gavin leaves to gather supplies to bury the body. Nikki surreptitiously follows Gavin into the café when he returns. Gavin descends the stairs to murder Liz but is startled by the noise Nikki is accidentally making upstairs. Nikki finds photos of Gavin and Violet who is wearing the same necklace that Gavin gave her. Then she finds Dan who is barely alive. Instead of calling 911, Nikki sneaks around the cafe using keys between her fingers as a weapon. She locates Liz downstairs and attempts to untie her before hearing Gavin approaching. Gavin pulls Dan down the stairs and sees Liz's gag is removed. He also finds Nikki's Celtics cross on the floor and knows that Nikki is present. Nikki has hidden behind some bags of flour. Nikki grabs a wood plank and hits Gavin from behind. Liz escapes upstairs and hides again. Gavin, armed with an axe, tries to explain himself. He claims he entered the store that night just to talk to Liz, but she made him so angry he lashed out. Then he covered it up to stay out of trouble. He begs Nikki to come out and talk to him. Nikki tosses a container into the pantry closet. Gavin follows the sound inside and Nikki locks the closet door. Nikki grabs a set of keys and tries to unlock the front door which is chained shut. Then she tries to call 911 on the cafe phone as Gavin hacks his way out of the closet with the axe. Gavin tries to explain how Nikki, Brooke and himself can be a family. By this time, Liz has freed herself and snuck up from the basement armed with a wood plant. She swings and misses but Gavin turns around and Nikki takes him out with a large frying pan. The police arrive. Liz and Dan are safe. As Nikki goes to get the car to transport Liz to the hospital to check on Dan, she sees Gavin lead out in handcuffs. Nikki and Liz remain best friends and run the shop together.
