La película está protagonizada por Joaquin Phoenix, y Pedro Pascal junto a Luke Grimes (Yellowstone), Deirdre O’Connell (¡Olvídate de mí!), Micheal Ward (El imperio de la luz), Amélie Hoeferle (La piscina), Clifton Collins Jr. (Star Trek), William Belleau (Los asesinos de la luna), Austin Butler (Dune: Parte dos) y Emma Stone (Pobres criaturas).

"We Need Big Cinematic Events": Sam Mendes' Beatles Movie Cast Confirmed With the Wildest Release Plan Ever
Image
Get ready to meet The Beatles. The four stars of Sam Mendes' ambitious The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event were unveiled at CinemaCon tonight, and they are Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison. Not only do we now have the cast for the four interlinked movies, but we now know they'll have a uniquely audacious release strategy. You might have to hit the theater eight days a week because Sony Pictures will release all four movies in April 2028.

The cast were all on hand for the crowd of theatrical exhibitors and journalists, including Collider's Britta DeVore, in Las Vegas, making their first public appearance to a crowd only slightly less enthusiastic than the throngs of Beatlemaniacs who greeted the real deal on The Ed Sullivan Show. Mendes was on hand as well and declared the...

Fantastic Four Star Pedro Pascal's Upcoming Thriller Movie Gets Release Window
Image
It's a good day to be a Pedro Pascal fan. A release window has been revealed for the actor's upcoming A24 movie Eddington.

According to Variety, A24 is bringing Ari Aster's hotly-anticipated Beau Is Afraid follow-up, Eddington, to the European Film Market in Berlin later this month. It's also being reported that A24 is targeting a summer release for the original thriller movie that boasts a cast that includes Pascal, Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, and Austin Butler. Eddington might also be in contention for a Cannes debut, which would make it Aster's first film as director to bow at the festival, which will be held from May 13-24 this year. This suggests that the movie will not debut in theaters until late May at the earliest.

The True Story Behind ‘Lockerbie: A Search for Truth,’ Explained
Image
The search for answers concerning the most catastrophic and tragic events is fundamental to human experience. When these occurrences involve the untimely passing of our loved ones, we firmly desire finality and closure. This is the driving force behind the new series Lockerbie: A Search for Truth. Starring Colin Firth and streaming on Peacock, Lockerbie: A Search for Truth chronicles the aftermath of a terrorist attack that took place in 1988 aboard Pan Am Flight 103. The bombing of Flight 103 killed all 243 passengers and 16 members of the crew, and the ensuing crash claimed the lives of 11 residents in Lockerbie. The attack would leave 270 dead in its wake and leave the world shocked as they sought answers to what remains the largest terrorist attack to take place in the United Kingdom.

Based on the book The Lockerbie Bombing: A Father's Search for Justice, Colin Firth portrays Jim Swire, one of the book's authors.

Why Were ‘Maria’ and ‘The Room Next Door’ Snubbed From BAFTA Longlists?
Image
Both Angelina Jolie (“Maria”) and Tilda Swinton (“The Room Next Door”) will be in attendance at the Beverly Hilton on Sunday night as they compete for the Golden Globe award for best actress (drama). There’s a chance they’ll both leave empty-handed, with Nicole Kidman (“Babygirl”), Fernanda Torres (“I’m Still Here”), Kate Winslet (“Lee”) and Pamela Anderson (“The Last Showgirl”) also in contention for the honor amid a highly competitive year for lead actress.

But one awards show where neither Jolie and Swinton will be get recognition is the BAFTAs, with both of their acclaimed dramas failing to land a single spot on the longlists following the first round of voting.

Announced Friday, the longlists have put “Emilia Perez” and “Conclave” out in front, with 15 and 14 slots respectively, followed by a tight pack that includes “The Substance,” “The Brutalist,” “A Complete Unknown,” “Dune: Part Two,” “Wicked” and “Anora.”

Trent Reznor
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are getting zapped into the grid — and Nine inch Nails is back.

Disney announced, during its Disney Entertainment Showcase at D23, that the influential composers behind “The Social Network” and HBO’s “Watchmen,” would be composing the original score for the forthcoming “Tron” sequel, “Tron: Ares,” which is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 10, 2025.

Reznor and Ross, who in addition to being Hollywood’s most in-demand composers are also members of industrial rock outfit Nine Inch Nails, have some mighty big shoes to fill. 1982’s “Tron” had a cutting-edge score composed by Wendy Carlos, who had also composed the score to Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” and “A Clockwork Orange.”

Colin Firth Boards ‘Young Sherlock’ Series at Amazon
Image
Prime Video’s Young Sherlock series is adding another big name to its cast.

Colin Firth has joined the Guy Ritchie-directed show, which is inspired by author Andy Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes novel series. Firth joins a cast that also includes Hero Fiennes Tiffin in the title role, Joseph Fiennes and Natascha McElhone as Sherlock’s parents and Zine Tseng as Princess Gulun Shou’an.

Firth will play a character named Sir Bucephalus Hodge; details on the role are being kept quiet for now.

Young Sherlock is described as a reimagining of the iconic detective, in the spirit of Ritchie’s two Sherlock Holmes feature films. The series follows Sherlock as a 19-year-old who is “disgraced, raw, unfiltered, and unformed, when he finds himself caught up in a murder mystery at Oxford University which threatens his freedom. Image
What’s Sam Mendes have in store next for audiences after 2022’s “Empire Of Light“? Well, World Of Reel reports (via The InSneider) that it may be not one movie, but four: biopics on each member of arguably the greatest pop-rock group ever, The Beatles. Yup, that’s a movie each for John, Paul, George, and Ringo. In other words, eat your heart of Peter Jackson: “The Beatles: Get Back” may no longer be the apex of Beatles visual projects any longer.

Sam Mendes Has Reportedly Found the Stars of his Four Beatles Biopics
Image
Sam Mendes is undoubtedly one of the best filmmakers of our times. Among his many hit films are American Beauty (1999), which earned him the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Director, then Road to Perdition (2002), Jarhead (2005), Revolutionary Road (2008), the James Bond films Skyfall (2012) and Spectre (2015), and the critically acclaimed war film 1917 (2019). He also made Empire of Light in 2022 but has not been active since. Yet, earlier this year, it was reported that Mendes was working on an ambitious four-film project related to arguably the best band ever – The Beatles!

Mandes is working on four individual biopics, each dedicated to one member of the famous group – John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. All four movies are currently planned for a 2027 release, which demonstrates just how big this project is. But this is old news. What we have for you here is some important casting information,...

Every Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross Score, Ranked
Image
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have, in less than 15 years, established themselves as the most exciting composers working in contemporary film.

Their first score was David Fincher’s masterpiece “The Social Network.” The score was a haunting, atmospheric triumph, and it won them Oscars, an even more impressive feat given the Academy’s historic anti-rock band bias. And what began as an exclusive collaboration with Fincher soon blossomed outward – they have worked with Pixar and Ken Burns, scored a prestige TV version of Alan Moore’s “Watchmen,” and an animated “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movie. They can do it all, while remaining uniquely them.

They are unstoppable, too. This week “Challengers,” from Luca Guadagnino, is released alongside their soundtrack album. And they have a pair of scores still coming this year – for the big-budget Apple movie “The Gorge” and for Guadagnino’s “Queer,” starring Daniel Craig.

For the purposes of this list,...

Listen to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ Challengers Score
Image
The last couple Reznor-Ross soundtracks weren’t hitting as hard: on The Killer they ceded ground to Morrissey, replacing their multi-tone soundscapes for atmospherics; Bones and All found them exploring some more pastoral tones to admirable, if limited ends; Empire of Light, what can you say. There’s a special joy, then, listening to their work for Challengers, which our review was indeed correct in calling “their most inspired work in some time”––it suggests those bouncier, more aggressive bits from The Social Network becoming an entire album unto themselves.

There’s also “Compress / Repress,” a track the duo wrote with Luca Guadagnino and which finds Reznor making a rare vocal appearance. It’s been, somehow, six years since a non-instrumental Nine Inch Nails album; this writer hopes it sparks something of the frontman’s old habits.

Listen below:

There’s also a version of the score remixed by Boys Noize,...

Olivia Colman movies: 17 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Olivia Colman’s impressive range as an actress seems to know no bounds. A favorite in the UK for her television work in such sitcoms as “The Office” and “Fleabag,” TV audiences also lauded her for her dramatic performances in “Broadchurch” and “The Night Manager,” as well as more recently with “The Crown” and “Landscapers.” But it has been her estimable work in films that continues to bring her international renown.

With such acclaim from audiences, it was inevitable that awards would begin coming her way. She took home the Oscar for Best Actress for “The Favourite” (2018) and scored an additional Best Supporting Actress nomination for “The Father” (2020). For her work in television, Colman has received four Emmy bids, winning for “The Crown.” She also claimed Golden Globe statues for both TV (“The Night Manager” and “The Crown”) and film (“The Favourite”). The idea of a Gus Fring prequel series came from Esposito himself, focusing on Fring's rise through the criminal underworld. Young actors like Keith Powers, Michael Ward, and Caleb McLaughlin could bring a fresh take to the iconic role of Gus Fring. De-aging technology could potentially allow young Giancarlo Esposito or Justiin Davis to reprise the role of Gus Fring in a prequel series.

Amazingly, more than 10 years since the series finale of Breaking Bad there’s still an insatiable desire for content within that world, and one perfect option for a prequel series would be to focus on the early history of Gus Fring. However, to achieve this, a daunting task must be completed, and that’s recasting Giancarlo Esposito with an actor capable of living up to his iconic performance. Luckily, there’s no shortage of passionate, talented, and underappreciated young actors working today who would jump at...

Ari Aster Casts Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal in Next A24 Movie ‘Eddington’
Image
Ari Aster has assembled an all-star cast for his next film, “Eddington,” recruiting Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward and Clifton Collins Jr.

A24 is financing and producing the movie, which — based on Aster’s track record — we can only assume will give us nightmares. Plot details are kept under wraps besides the fact that the film “follows a small-town New Mexico sheriff with higher aspirations.”

“Eddington” starts production this week, with Aster writing, directing and producing alongside Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg banner. Two-time Academy Award nominee Darius Khondji is the director of photography.

“Eddington” marks the sixth collaboration between Square Peg and A24, which produced and distributed Aster’s previous three films — “Hereditary,” “Midsommar” and “Beau Is Afraid” — as well as “Dream Scenario” and the upcoming “Death of a Unicorn.”

Phoenix was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for...

American Society of Cinematographers Awards: ‘Oppenheimer’ wins on way to Oscars
Image
“Oppenheimer” lenser Hoyte van Hoytema took top honors from the American Society of Cinematographers on Sunday. He edged out all four of his Oscar rivals for Best Cinematography: Edward Lachman (“El Conde”), Matthew Libatique (“Maestro”), Rodrigo Prieto (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Robbie Ryan (“Poor Things”).

Over its 38-year history, the ASC has predicted 152 of the 190 Oscar nominees, including four in 2019, 2020 and 2021 and all five this year and in both 2018 and 2017. Last year, it previewed three of the Best Cinematography contenders — Roger Deakins (“Empire of Light”), Darius Khondji (“Bardo”) and Mandy Walker (“Elvis”). While Walker won over the ASC, she lost the Oscar to “All Quiet on the Western Front” lenser James Friend.

Indeed, the ASC choice for the best in the business has presaged the eventual winner at the Oscars only 17 times:

Dean Semler, “Dances with Wolves” (1991)

John Toll, “Braveheart” (1996)

John Seale, “The English Patient” (1997)

Russell Carpenter, “Titanic” (1998)

When Did Sam Mendes Earn the Right to Direct Four Beatles Biopics?
Image
If you told me there was a plan in place to make four Beatles biopics — one each about John, Paul, George, and Ringo — and that they were going to be directed by Richard Linklater, I’d be suffused with curiosity and excitement. If you told me that those same four movies were going to be directed by Martin Scorsese, I’d be suffused with curiosity and excitement. If you told me that a quartet of Beatles biopics were going to be directed (one apiece) by Linklater, Scorsese, Greta Gerwig, and Todd Haynes, I’d be suffused with curiosity and excitement — and, in fact, that last option would make a beautiful kind of sense. When you think about it, why would anyone — even Scorsese, the poet of rock-operatic drama — want to direct all four Beatles biopics? Talk about hogging the spoils.

But Sam Mendes does. According to a master plan handed down on stone tablets by…...

Oscar winner Sam Mendes to direct four individual Beatles biopics
Image
“American Beauty” Oscar winner and “Skyfall” director Sam Mendes is taking on the most ambitious project of his career thus far. The “1917” filmmaker is setting up a quartet of Beatles biopics with Sony Pictures Entertainment, Deadline first reported.

The project will feature four theatrically released films, with one told from each member of the Fab Four’s point of view. It will be the first time the Beatles’ company, Apple Corps Ltd., and the members of the Beatles or their estates have granted full life and music rights for a scripted film, according to Deadline.

Mendes will direct all four interconnected films, which are slated for a 2027 release. Writers are in the process of being hired, and a release schedule will be announced at a later date. Mendes will produce through his Neal Street Productions banner alongside his partner Pippa Harris and Julie Pastor. Jeff Jones will executive produce for Apple Corps Ltd.

UK Film & High-End TV Production Spend Slid Sharply To $5.3B In Strike-Hit 2023
Image
Spend on UK film and high-end TV slid sharply to £4.23B ($5.3B) in the strike-hit 2023, according to the BFI’s latest annual stats.

The figure was 35% down on a record 2022, the BFI said, while floating the silver lining of £4.3B being nearly level with 2019’s pre-Covid spend. There were other green shoots such as a small rise in cinema admissions.

It will come as little surprise that the figures fell so starkly given that the latter half of the year saw film and high-end TV production severely dented due to the writers and actors strikes across the pond.

Film production in the UK fell to £1.36B in 2023 spend, a 31% drop on 2022’s figure, while high-end TV was down by the larger 38% to £2.9B. As with the past few years, high-end TV made up the brunt of overall production spend at around two-thirds.

Of the total £1.36B spent on 207 film productions,...

Image
Netflix kicked off February with news of the streaming service’s 2024 film slate.

The steamer, which landed 18 Oscar nominations this year – including seven for Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” – will debut numerous populist films in 2024, including new projects from Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz, Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry, Jenifer Lopez, Millie Bobby Brown, Eddie Murphy, and more.

Well-known directors with movies set to premiere on Netflix this year include Tyler Perry (two titles), McG, Richard Linklater, and Lee Daniels. Comedian Jerry Seinfeld will also make his directorial debut with “Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story.”

On the awards front, while it’s too early to tell which projects might pop – and what movies Netflix might acquire for release this year, similarly to how the studio purchased Todd Haynes’ “May December” at the Cannes Film Festival last year – titles to flag include “The Piano Lesson” from Malcolm Washington with Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington,...

Watch out for Jacob Elordi (‘Saltburn’) at the BAFTAs
Image
Soon after “Saltburn” debuted on Amazon Prime, it joined the 1 million watch club on Letterboxd (the leading social media app for film lovers) and was one of the fastest to do so this year. The film has completely taken over social media due to its provocative, erotic sensibilities. “Transfixing and hypnotic, writer/director Emerald Fennell has crafted a provocative and diabolical masterpiece”, writes Awards Daily. Despite being nearly a month since its release, “Saltburn” remains in the top 3 most watched programs on the platform, film or television, in both the UK and US.

“Saltburn” reaped five bids at the Critics’ Choice Awards including Best Picture. Lead Barry Keoghan and scene-stealer Rosamund Pike contended at the Globes. Fennell’s sophomore feature merited 11 longlist mentions at BAFTA.

Among those in the running at BAFTAs is Jacob Elordi for Best Supporting Actor. He plays Felix Catton, an aristocratic who becomes the object of desire for Keoghan’s character,...

Disney, Film Financing Partner Tsg Settle Lawsuit Over “Hollywood Accounting”
Image
Disney and Tsg Entertainment Finance have settled litigation from August of 2023 when the financier sued the media giant for “rampant self-dealing” and breach of the parties’ revenue participation contract.

“The matter has been resolved,” said a Disney spokesperson.

Tsg said it has financed more than 140 films to the tune of $3.3 billion over the years with Fox, which Disney acquired in 2019, including Avatar: The Way of Water, Bohemian Rhapsody, Deadpool, Deadpool 2, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Logan, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, The Martian, The Grand Budapest Hotel, JoJo Rabbit, The Banshees of Inisherin, Hidden Figures, The Shape of Water and Empire of Light.

Tsg’s lawsuit filed last August in Los Angeles District Court said that Fox had promised Tsg a share of defined gross receipts for pictures under the companies’ long-term participation agreement but that the studio used “nearly every trick in the Hollywood accounting book” to not pay.

Box office preview: ‘Mean Girls’ musical looks to win MLK Jr. weekend with ease
Image
The holidays were dominated by two movie musicals — “Wonka” and “The Color Purple” — and just two weeks into January, we get a third one. “Mean Girls” is likely to not only be the biggest movie of the extended MLK Jr. weekend, but of the entire month. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.

Twenty years after Tina Fey‘s influential comedy “Mean Girls” introduced the world to the elitist high school clique known as the Plastics, with a cast that included Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lizzy Caplan and Amanda Seyfried, “Mean Girls” returns to theaters, this time as a musical transposed from a successful run on Broadway.

Fey is back as teacher Ms. Norbury, as is her “SNL” cast mate Tim Meadows as his character from the 2004 movie. They’re joined by a new young cast that includes Angourie Rice (from the “Spider-Man” movies) as Cady Heron – the...

‘All of Us Strangers’: From BIFAs to BAFTAs?
Image
At the British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) on Dec. 3, Andrew Haigh‘s “All of Us Strangers” domainted, winning seven races including Picture, Director, and Screenplay. Meanwhile, Mia McKenna-Bruce won Best Lead Performance for “How to Have Sex” while her co-star, Shaun Thomas, tied for Best Supporting Performance along with “All of Us Strangers” scene stealer Paul Mescal. But what do these little independent awards mean for the larger awards season? Let’s take a look.

Firstly, “All of Us Strangers” had a great night. The fantasy film also won Music Supervision, Cinematographer, and Editing. This overwhelming response from British voters could indicate that the same will happen at the BAFTAs. “All of Us Strangers” could be in line for nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor for Mescal, and Best Actor for Andrew Scott. There are some big names, of course, that these creatives will...
