Two astronauts, scientists, are conducting experiments high above Earth's atmosphere aboard Space Station Oculus. Major Alex Toomey responds to Houston Mission Control when they call them, and waves to her fellow scientist Ted Lockwood as he goes. Ted joins Alex on the bridge and they perform a scheduled correction burn. An alarm goes off, but they can't find the malfunction. A debris field comes up and Houston advises a course correction. The main object is still closing and increasing speed, matching their course correction. Alex initiates a second burn, and then has Ted initiate a wave pulse from the test device they're carrying.
The oncoming object just misses them, and Ted shuts down the device then goes to the bridge. Houston has no idea what the object is, and a day later the two astronauts do a live feed with TV news reporter Ann Poole. Ted explains that his device eliminates weightlessness in space, and they can use his device to control and eliminate gravity in outer space. He says that the applications are limitless, while Alex is clearly uncomfortable with his more knowledgeable team member. Ted notices Alex's discomfort and makes it clear that it was a team effort, and Ann notices that Alex is the son of a highly decorated astronaut, Mike Toomey, who was the first man on Mars.
Once Anne signs off, Alex mutters to himself that he's always living in his father's shadow. He then tells Ted that he's just along for the ride, and says that no one will ever look at anything he ever does. Alex insists that Anne got in a dig about his father. An alarm goes off on a 1202, and Houston says that it's not an issue and a team on the ground will have an answer in a bit.
Alex looks at a photo of his father, and he hears someone in the ship calling his name. He investigates and finds nothing, and goes to his cabin. The shadow of Mike appears on the wall, telling Alex that he'll never measure up. The shadow disappears, and Alex walks out and hears something moving down the hallway. Houston calls, and Alex goes to the bridge and responds to the operator, Sandra. Ted joins Alex, and Sandra tells them that she has new mission parameters for them. She tells them that the government has been in contact with an alien race, and the near miss was an alien probe sending them a message. The astronauts' mission is now first contact and one of them will be the first to talk to an alien species. Sandra tells them that only Ted is going, and the probe contained a wealth of information including teleportation instructions. The transport beam will appear when Oculus is on the dark side of the moon, and Ted will step into the beam and meet with the Grenengi.
As Ted signs off, Alex hears Mike's voice in his head, tauntingly noting that they're sending Ted instead of Alex. He says that if he can be number one, so can Alex, and tells his son to measure up. Ted asks Alex if he's okay, and Alex assures his teammate that he's good. He tells Ted that he will have immortality, and Ted is the most qualified.
Later, Ted reviews a Grenengi speech that Houston has sent, and Ted is supposed to give the aliens. Alex comes in, and Ted says that it's his introduction. Ted talks about how they both had a dream since they were kids, a dream of meeting aliens from other worlds. Now it's happening, and it's history and Alex will be a part of it. Alex says that Ted doesn't know what it's like to have been Mike's son, and he always had to be first because Mike was relentless and put him down even when Alex became an astronaut. Ted tells Alex that they have the same dream, but Alex tells him that he's living his while Alex is fucked.
Sandra calls and sends a procedure on 1202 alarm glitch. As Oculus reaches the dark side of the moon, it loses signal with Houston. The two astronauts check the circuits, and Ted is sealed in a chamber with the gravity wave device. Alex glares at Ted through the porthole, then activates the device and crushes Ted to a pulp.
Later, Alex reviews video of Ted's death as he prepares to step into the beam. The Grenengi ship arrives, and Alex severs the camera link with Houston and is teleported to the alien ship. The Grenengi meet with Alex and remove his helmet, and he discovers he can breathe. They ask where Ted is, and say that Ted must make his report to his people. Alex realizes that Ted was one of them, and they scan Alex's memories to discover what happened to Ted. When Alex says that he didn't know that Ted was an alien, they say that the gravity wave was their first exchange of technology, and there will be no more. Alex says that it was supposed to be him, and the Grenengi says that they sent "Ambassador Seven" to prove humanity's worth. Alex failed the test, and his actions have doomed his whole species.
The Grenengi says that Alex wanted the whole world to know his name, and now they will... but they won't remember for now. Alex wonders what the alien means, and the Grenengi says that Alex use of the gravity wave created a seismic shift in the Moon, setting it on a collision course for Earth. The aliens teleports Alex back to Oculus, and he watches a video freed from Earth of his killing Ted. The Moon slams into Earth, wiping out humanity as Alex looks on from the ship. Alex stands alone, hearing Mike's voice in his head telling him that he'll never be the one.

Sibling Rivalry
At Manchester High School, Lola Piece is sent to meet with her counselor, Mrs. Porter. Lola says that her brother Andrew is trying to kill her, and she can prove it. She talks about how she was her friend, Grace, who had a hot brother. When they went out to TP a girl and got back to Grace's house, Grace tries to kiss Lola while she was sleeping. However, she insists to Porter that Grace didn't sexually assault her and it was just a misunderstanding, and she's not into girls.
Then she gives some backstory to Porter about how she caught Andrew peeping into her room, and he wouldn't give her a ride so she had to take the bus to school. She didn't feel well, and wonders if she was pregnant from airborne sperm. Lola dismisses the idea and says that she stayed after school for Homecoming committee, and when she got home Andrew was making dinner but he never cooks. and she got sick from it and barfed.
Porter tries to get Lola back to her complaint, and Lola says that Andrew kept staring at her. Their dog is afraid of Andrew, and Lola caught Andrew online researching medieval weapons. Porter wonders if Andrew is thinking about bringing weapons to school, and Lola is sure he wasn't researching guns. Then Andrew tied Lola up in the basement, but when he left, Lola ripped through the ties and spent the night at Grace's house. Porter is skeptical of Lola ripping through the ties, and Lola thanks the counselor for believing her. However, Lola has no marks on her wrists and Porter tells her to get back to class, and recommend the teenager talk to her parents and maybe see a therapist.
Lola insists that everything she has said is true, and after school tells Andrew that they have to talk. He walks away without a word, and Lola figures that her brother wants her dead. Grace approaches Lola and invites her to go eat later, and Lola finally agrees.
Later, Lola goes home and calls to Andrew. She gets no answer and finds nobody in the garage... but fails to notice the missing axe on the worktable pegboard. Lola finds Andrew in the kitchen wielding the axe, and he tells her she can't tell their parents because they're dead. She figures that he killed them, and Andrew says that he didn't kill them but Lola did. Lola tells him to stop lying and put down the axe, and he asks what she remembers after she came home from Grace's.
His sister says that she had snack and went to bed, and Andrew asks her if she remembers what she ate. Lola remembers spilling syrup from pancakes, and Andrew tells her that it was blood. He points out that it's been day since she saw their parents, and she's a monster. Andrew explains that he load up the spaghetti with garlic, and read online that vampires don't like garlic. She broke through the ties because she has vampiric super-strength, and he tied her up to keep her from hurting anyone else.
Andrew says that Lola came home, hugged her mother, then grew fangs and ripped her throat out. He secretly watched from the stairs. Lola went to the kitchen and killed her father, pulling out his heart and drinking the blood. Andrew took the bodies out in garbage bags, and cleaned up what was left to protect Lola. He's done research which says that beheading is the only way to stop a vampire.
Lola asks how she became a vampire, and remembers that Grace bit her neck, and didn't kiss her. She tells Andrew, who says that he can't let kill anyone else the next time she's hungry. Lola tells her brother she'll figure something out, and doesn't want to die. Andrew insists that he has to do the right thing, and tells her to hold still while he chops her head off. They both burst into laughter at the idea of telling Lola to stand still while he decapitates her, and her using big words while begging for her life.
Andrew lowers the axe and admits that he doesn't know what to do, because they're all they have left of their family. Lola says that she won't hurt him, and now she has control of her condition. Andrew figures that Grace is the one who should die, and goes to kill her. Lola tells him that he can't do it alone, and offers to help him. She bites him to turn him into a vampire and give him the super-strength he needs to kill Grace.
Later, Porter calls Lola into her office and says that Grace has gone missing. The counselor figures that Lola knows something, and Lola insists that she doesn't. Porter says that she'll figure out whatever's going on, just as Andrew comes in and Lola tells Porter that Andrew was trying to kill her, but she killed him first. Brother and sister advance on the suddenly-nervous Porter and rip her throat out.
