In two new landmark, multi-year deals for Spain’s top pay TV operator, Movistar Plus+ has inked partnership carriage deals with Warner Bros. Discovery and SkyShowtime. Both agreements were announced Friday.
Extending its partnership, the Wbd deal takes in current linear networks on Movistar Plus+ – Warner TV, TCM, Discovery Channel, Eurosport and CNN – plus premier Warner Bros. entertainment from Jan. 1 such as “Barbie,” “Meg 2,” “The Nun 2,” “Friends, “The Big “Bang Theory,” “Mrs Davis” and “The Winchester,” plus Max, scheduled to launch in Spain in Spring 2024.
SkyShowtime launched in February 2023 in Spain. The Movistar Plus+ pact marks SkyShowtime’s first deal with a Spanish operator.
No financial details have been given of either deal.
Crucially, in a move from aggregation to integration mirroring Apple TV+’s deal with France’s Canal Plus Group, both Max and SkyShowtime will form a seamless part of Movistar Plus+’s main navigation system and on-demand service,...

The long-simmering “Sexy Beast” prequel series has evidently been resuscitated for the streamer after being scrapped for Paramount Network in 2020.
The U.K.-originated show, based on the cult classic film of the same name, centers on the characters of Gal Dove and Don Logan as they descend into London’s criminal underbelly during the volatile 1990s.
Paramount Plus describes the series as “a love story between two men — à la Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” It’s produced by Chapter One and Vis, with showrunner Michael Caleo (“The Sopranos”) attached.
Also heading to Paramount Plus out of the U.K. is an adaptation of the Amor Towles novel “A Gentleman in Moscow,” written by “All Creatures Great and Small” scribe Ben Vanstone.

Mónica Barbaro has been cast opposite Mexican star Diego Boneta as the female-lead in Boneta’s film “At Midnight,” one of Paramount Plus’ banner upcoming Latin American originals produced by ViacomCBS International Studios (Vis).
Set to start production shortly for a 2022 release on Paramount Plus, the romantic comedy turns on two people who have made the “safe” choice not to fall in love – until fate throws them together.
In “At Midnight,” Barbaro will play Jessica, an on-the-rise gorgeous movie star suffering an unreliable celebrity boyfriend; Boneta portrays Alejandro, whose predictable life is proceeding according to his well-thought-out plan.
“At Midnight” looks set to be a Spanish/English-language movie, Boneta speaking in Spanish and Barbaro in English.
“Dating & New York” helmer Jonah Feingold is set to direct from a screenplay based on an original idea by Giovanni Porta and written by Porta, Maria Hinojos, and Feingold. Boneta’s production company...

Brazilian hit comedy troupe Porta Dos Fundos, renowned for its irreverent take on the life of Christ in their annual Christmas Specials, is making its first animated special exclusively for streamer Paramount Plus.
The new Paramount Plus Original, titled “Mean Boys,” is written by troupe co-founder Fábio Porchat and co-produced by Vis Americas and Brazilian animation studio, Estricnina.
The move makes sense given that ViacomCBS took a majority stake in Porta dos Fundos in 2017 and co-produced last year’s special with Porta dos Fundos.
“Mean Boys” will give the audience a peek at Jesus’ teenage life before he became Christ as he enrolls in a new high school and, with the help of his pal Lázaro, tries to fit in. “We always wanted to make an animation [film],” said Porchat, adding: “This pandemic turned our desire into a necessity. After all, drawing can’t transmit a virus.” The pandemic continues to...

In a large coup for its ambitions in Latin America and beyond, ViacomCBS International Studios (Vis) unveiled Wednesday an exclusive deal with Argentina’s Juan José Campanella, writer-director of the Academy Award winning “The Secret in Their Eyes.”
The agreement follows smartly on production of a first season of “The Envoys” (“Los Enviados”), a six-part action thriller series starring Luis Gerardo Méndez, Miguel Ángel Silvestre, and Irene Azuela.
Turning on two Vatican envoys dispatched to a Mexican village to discover the truth behind a priest’s alleged miracle healing, “The Envoys” was early fruit of a first-look deal signed in between Vis and Campanella’s Buenos Aires-based production company, 100 Bares Productions. The first season will premiere later this year on ViacomCBS’ premium streaming service Paramount Plus in Latin America. Season two of “The Envoys” is currently in development under Campanella.
Under the terms of the exclusive agreement, Campanella will write,...
