Mother of Color is about Noelia (played by the compelling Ana del Rocío) as the a young mom who can't seem to find adequate childcare. Just as she finds out she's invited to interview with a city commissioner (played by former Portland City Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty) at the last minute, the ancestors start communicating in the form of visions and dreams. As Noelia tries to figure out childcare in order to make it to the interview, she also tries to understand what they are trying to say.
Mother of Color is an original storyline, well told by first time writer/director Dawn Jones Redstone that marries our modern take on the impacts of ancestral trauma with the very real struggles of single mothers in a society that constantly holds them back. The film is thrilling, heart warming and spiritual. Worth the watch.

"Mother of Color" is a very well-crafted film that gives us a closer look into the day-to-day realities of the struggle for many working class people in this country. Director Dawn Jones Redstone captures the essence of what so many of us in America face on a daily basis. Just trying to make ends meet while still having a few good moments in between the hard times is what we're all really seeking afterall.
The acting is superb and the film is very touching because many of the metaphors come full circle in their own unique way at the conclusion. This is an excellent film that I will definitely watch over and over again. Well done!

"Mother of Color" directed by Dawn Jones Redstone, tells an original story that combines modern views on ancestral trauma with the real struggles of single moms facing societal challenges. It's an exciting, heartwarming, and spiritual movie that's definitely worth watching. The movie explores the tough life of being a single mom, especially as a woman of color, dealing with the pressures of capitalist and patriotic society. It also takes on the topic of challenging white supremacy from an angle not often seen in mainstream films. The movie shows how the actual reality of America affects everyday families. It's a must-watch!
A Nigerian proverb says" It takes a village to raise a child." Writer and director Dawn Jones Redstone explores what happens when a single mother must find the village within. Noelia, brilliantly played by Ana del Rocio, is a single mother of two spirited boys. She is given the opportunity to interview for a full-time dream job but things don't always go her way.
She visits with Che at her mother's request to deal with a ringing in her ears. This meeting sends her on a quest to learn from and learn to lean on her ancestors.
Portland is a beautiful backdrop to the story given its rich tribal history and recent political strife for Noemi to deal with the challenges of her very important day.
This movie challenges the thought that all people have equal access to the American Dream.

- TriviaThe film was inspired by the star Ana del Rocío who met with writer/director Dawn Jones Redstone over a period of many months to inform the original screenplay. Though there are a handful of moments that riff of real events from del Rocio's life as a single mom working in the political realm, the story in the film is fiction.
