Stays true to the idea of survival and grabs your attention from start to finish
rannynm7 May 2021
75 Degrees West is a really good adventure movie. The camera work is really good. The sets are pertinent to the idea of this story - survival. Lastly, I like that the supporting characters play roles that make it more real. An example is when the boys' bags are stolen by a lone traveler as he was really hungry, which makes sense from a survival point of view.

Civilization has fallen after a prolonged pandemic and two boys, Zach and Jack embark on a dangerous adventure after their parents have passed away, hoping to get help. Along the way, they see many dangers and have to put their bond and survival skills on the line.

I like that the film tries to show this is not a fake thing with the news reports going off from a multitude of countries. It stays true to the idea of survival as the actors grab only minimal resources that they need to survive, which also make it feel real. Lastly, the scenes of looting and car theft when the boys steal a pickup after a man hunts them down, also support the idea of survival, showing that everyone is on their own.

I like the close-up shots throughout this film; they are really on point in conveying the emotions of the characters. When Tom, Zach's brother, knows that he is not going to make it, we see his tears streaming down his face. In another scene which is a flashback, the camera captures their house, showing where they came from before they go out on their own. The location in a forest depicts an abandoned civilization, which is makes the aftermath of the pandemic look real as we see abandoned places and rusted out equipment. There is a lot of walking in the forest, which shows the boys trying to survive and trying to stay low profile. The background music is well chosen to support the various scenes, particularly the song playing during the ending credits which makes direct reference to the boys' experience. The song is sung in a heavy hearted voice, which supports their difficult journey that killed one of the boys. The lyrics, "It gets harder to carry the weight of what I've done, I am speaking from experience," relate to Zach having to deal with the aftermath of his brother, Tom getting shot when he made a clumsy mistake and alerted the shooter to their presence. The actors give admirable performances. My favorite part is when the shooter's gun jams as he is trying to reload and the boys' steal the guy's truck. He gets what he deserves for trying to shoot the boys.

The message of this film is: Do not give up; even though it may take time and effort, you will make it. You should be aware that it contains bloody, gory acts of violence, shooting and the guns.

I give 75 Degrees West 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 16 to 18, plus adults. By Tom W., KIDS FIRST!

Nice 1HR Indie!
Chobham13 May 2021
Love this 1hr film, especially since it's an Indie with a budget of $10K, and produced by a couple of teens. Great cinematography and sound track. I've seen much higher productions with less substance. As indie films go, it's excellent and because it's a film created by young filmmakers so, I forgave some of it's shortcomings. A good story that kept me engaged the whole time and a surprising ending to boot.

Awful

Terrible script writing and acting. This is definitely an amateur film made in a high school film class.

Surprisingly Good!

Looking for a different type of film, I saw the trailer of this film and decide to rent for $2.99 an Amazon. Expecting, little from it, I was presently surprised. Very good story, and decent acting, the film kept me engaged. Excellent cinematography, and sound track. Was not what I expected for a 1hr low budget film.

Solid for an Indie Film
ebmocede5 May 2021
I watched this film over a friends house this past weekend, loved it! As indie films go it's a solid pick for anyone. Good story, great cinematography, and sound track, and an unexpected ending. This film keeps you asking the question, "what's next?" If you like indie films and the unique perspectives they bring, this is a good one to watch. No academy awards yet for the 16 year-old director of the film, but in a few years with the right budget and talent, I can see people remembering his name.

Surprising Indie Film !
ebmocede4 May 2021
Watched this over a friends house last night. A Surprising film from two teen directors. You can find so many gems in indie films that you can't find in the big budget projects. Solid story, great cinematography, nice sound track, and while the acting won't win many awards, there were moments, where I shed a tear or two. This film is an example of why I support Amazon Prime. It is the only major streaming market place where viewers can find unique indie films.

75 Degrees West was a good movie to watch over the weekend with my family. I love the bond the two brothers had in the movie. The locations shown for the different scenes were beautiful. The young actors did aa good job showing their emotions throughout the movie. On top of that the ending had a twist. Great job to the young director.

Not bad, not bad at all for an Indie!
polixdrone18 May 2021
I enjoyed this film. Especially since I found out it was done by a couple of young filmmakers. Watched this during the virtual 2021 Long Leaf Festival last week. I loved some of the hidden details in the film. For instance, the younger boy Zach is the navigator, he has a smartphone where they use the GPS to guide them. Early on in the film, they show a 5-second clip of the phone being charged with a portable solar pack. I can easily see this happening in a recently post-apocalyptic world where many of the tech would still be available. There were plenty of little nuggets like this in the film that added a sense of reality. Great touch!

The camera work was also excellent, especially the aerial shots, and the soundtrack fit every scene.

The acting though not at the Oscar award level was good enough to keep me wanting to see what would happen to them next. I was a bit surprised at the final 30 seconds which was unexpected. Definitely, a recommended watch, especially if you're into Indie films. I do look forward to their next project.

Nice Small Budget Indie
kvette-151295 October 2021
This was a surprisingly enjoyable film. You can tell it's shot on a budget, but the cinematography, locations, and soundtrack were excellent. In reviewing some of the previous comments prior to watching the film, some criticized the acting. Though it won't win any academy awards in that category, I felt it was good enough to keep me wanting to see more, and in some parts is was excellent, particularly in a few of camping and ending scenes, and directed by a 16 year-old. I know of some in the business for more that 25 years who have yet to produce an enjoyable film. Great work to these young men!
