NOT EVEN CLOSE TO "well done"
yaktheripper26 July 2012
I reactivated my account just to give ya'll some balance. This movie is a stinker ladies and gentlemen. We can call it "the little movie that could" but we won't because that would be a betrayal to little movies that actually can..and do. "Alien Opponent" is a mess. It is slow to begin and if you can get past the hobbled set-up it doesn't get much better. The acting is, of course, so sub par that Rowdy Roddy Piper is the best of the bunch...and there is a bunch, and that's not saying anything positive. Of course acting is the product of script and direction; the script is tired and humorless. The actors do little to escape the clutches of the feeble clichés they've been degraded too. Sigh...I saw this B grade actor type circus act before in a "little movie that could" called "Feast". "Feast" does it so much better and makes the genre proud. This wretched excuse of a movie is a disgrace. On a "positive" note...the alien, at times, is nicely designed. It has enough originality that it deserves a better movie and a better script. The special effects also are nicely done and there's enough gore for a gore-hound to get their fix. You deserve better and better you can do...by far.

Recommended despite an average global note.

Sometimes I just need to relax with an hour and a half of silliness. When I'm lucky, and that's not often at all, I stumble upon a perfect piece, like this Alien Opponent.

The plot has an obvious potential for being funny, wacky, entertaining. The film is all of this. Surprisingly, there is even a proper script, complete with imagination and attention to detail. It's silly but not stupid. The main flaw is bad acting, which forced me to reduce my note from a good to an average movie. Too many characters are portrayed by amateurs. On the other hand, some actors enjoyed themselves while being filmed, and this obvious pleasure contaminates the audience. Personally, I did enjoy the whole show and will watch it again.

As a side note, I don't enjoy gore at all, so I was glad that Alien Opponent contains very little of it, nothing that bothered me.

Just one word is needed to summarize this movie: LOL
paul_haakonsen3 June 2012
"Alien Opponent" is listed here on IMDb as Action / Sci-Fi. Why not comedy? Because there surely wasn't an ounce of seriousness to this movie. The absurdity of the storyline and the grotesqueness of the characters just added up to one big bowl of comedy soup.

This movie was actually so cheesy that it was fun to sit through. Don't expect a major impressive storyline, because it just isn't here. This movie is about an alien crash landing on Earth and soon the small community is on end to cash in on a $100.000 price to reclaim the dead body of someone killed by the alien. The junkyard soon becomes a battle-zone where man fights man, but also fights the alien and fights machines.

This movie seemed to be a hilarious spoof on the Sci-Fi genre, and the character's in the movie were so outrageous that it was just hard to take this as a serious movie. And it was actually fun to sit through and watch how the people were taking out one another in various ways and in various methods.

The movie has Jeremy London and Roddy Piper as the top-lining billed names on the posted. Nothing else need be said...

But if you like senseless mayhem, twisted characters, murder and killing with various tools and styles, like campy aliens and questionable dialogue, then "Alien Opponent" is definitely right up your alley.

One thing did strike me odd though, because the title displayed in the actual movie was "Alien Infiltration" and not "Alien Opponent" as here on IMDb.

Sort of like a Made-for-TV Troma picture, with a bit less sleaze and cheese

Warning: Spoilers
I happened into the middle of "Alien Opponent" by accident while channel surfing one Sunday, and something about it caught my interest. So I watched it all the way through the next time it was on the Chiller channel to see if my initial impressions were correct.

This is not a "good" movie in any sense of the word, but it has some nice setups, some decent moments here and there, some quirky (if broadly defined) performances, and it obviously isn't meant to be taken seriously. (For instance, it doesn't really answer the question of where a junkyard owner would get 100 grand in cash or why she doesn't just call the Feds if she wants the alien out of her garage.) There's a very cynical and nihilistic screenplay which is built around the theme of most cynical direct-to-cable releases, "Kill them all and let God sort them out." It populates the movie with the most generic character stereotypes you can imagine and gives them the most banal (but mean hearted) dialog to mouth.

But the director keeps things moving along briskly enough to keep things from getting too annoying, the actors are good enough to keep the energy going during most of the scenes, and (as I said) there's a gallows humor that ties the movie elements together.

So I'd call this an OK time-waster. Watching it will kill 90+ minutes effectively enough on a slow evening, and if you are watching it for free on cable, you'll feel as if you got your money's worth,if you know what I mean.

Don't waste your time!

Seriously, some people are claiming this film is fun. It is "not"! I rarely write reviews, but this film sucked so bad except for a lot of tightly cupped female breasts. If you want to see some nice bodies in the first half of this film, fine, but the cast is left with nothing to work with. It really just sucks so bad that I felt compelled to complain about it. I don't know if I've written any glowing reviews for films, but those stand out in their own with high scores. This thing has a 4.2 currently, and it's lucky it has that. I'm guessing nice female bodies and decent effects got it that score, but unless you've been living in a cave and humor is new to you, this will be a waste.

I'm normally a fan of "so bad it's good", but this is not one of those films. You want "so bad it's good", check out a Fulci flick, or an excellent piece of art like Burial Ground.

Leave this one to people who have insomnia, cause this is a cure. Even beats Paranormal Activity for induced snores per minute.

Boring
freezageeza196626 August 2015
I wanted to like this movie. The plot outline sounded like a lot of fun,and being an obviously lower end budget title I went into this one with low expectations and hoping to at least get a few laughs out of it in the process.

It was a simple enough story.Abusive husband catches his wife getting jiggy with it with another man in the barn. Just as the husband is about to give his wife a slapping for her infidelity, mother in law steps and and embeds a hammer into his skull......then hey presto an alien conveniently crashes into the barn. Mother and daughter then offer a large amount of money to anyone who can rid them of the alien and recover the husbands body (presumably to dispose of it later). The alien however has other ideas.....

And so began what should have been a reasonably entertaining action flick as every gun totting whacko from miles around arrived to get a piece of the action.

It was obvious that from the get go,everybody was playing this one for laughs. Unfortunately, the actors were either too wooden or over the top to be anywhere near funny.Even the late Roddy Piper as a gun totting priest couldn't add any comedy to the proceedings.

The action scenes weren't exciting enough because everybody was too busy trying to deliver a torrent of cheesy comments and one liners. To be brutally honest, the talent wasn't there to pull off anything remotely funny.

The alien effects however, were actually rather good.Unfortunately it was the only good thing about the whole movie.

At the end of the day, this is another one of those movies that would have benefited from a bigger budget and better actors.

Shame really.....this could have been something really entertaining.

Funny as hell....

This is a what most will call "B" movie. Trying to compare it to multimillion Hollywood productions is not what I am here to do. I will tell you how this fare within the context of a "B" movie and an indie product. If you are looking for a big-budget Hollywood movie please look elsewhere.

To me, I watched this expecting it to be silly. Silly it was, but entertaining! I thought it was going to be a really bad low-budget indie zombie/alien ripoff but I am happy to say that I was thrilled most of the time. Definitely better than the average efforts out there.

It was slow at times, but interjected with the darkest of humor in the appropriate places. I couldn't help but chuckled aloud many times during the course of the show. It also has the vilest of characters and stereotypes but the director definitely did a good job mocking them. The plot was ludicrous , but somehow worked. It will definitely not fail in entertaining folks of the genre.

Decent FX and loads of blood and guts as well. What more does one expect? :-)

Hope You Like Cheese

From the Chiller network comes Alien Opponent! The movie's loose plot follows a bunch of bumpkins and wackos as they attempt to earn the 100,000 dollar bounty that the junk yard owner is offering for the elimination of the alien who just crash landed in the middle of all the junk.

But if you're watching a movie called Alien Opponent, plot isn't one of your biggest concerns. So step one to having a great time: Turn off your brain! That being said, this movie is good, trashy fun. The blood, at least in the uncut DVD, is plentiful and the body count is through the roof. The movie seems to take an approach toward the value of human life that is, well, non-existent. It has the comedy of a Troma film without going so over the top. The characters are colorful and the pace is fluid.

The only recognizable faces present are Jeremy London (Mallrats) and Roddy Piper. Now, this movie is worth watching just to see Piper in action again as the tough-as-nails priest. Everyone else is relatively new but most perform admirably.

This low-budget gem will never win any awards or show up on your top-ten any time soon but I'll be honest with you: I was never bored, I had no idea what would happen next, and I had fun. When all is said and done, what else do you want?

80 minutes of good fun
peterfaure16 April 2012
I have to say I'm honestly surprised the current average mark for this excellent movie is so low, and probably some reviews are so negative.

In a way it's understandable actually, because if many people expected it to be a mega-budget Hollywood blockbuster with a tight plot, dialogs with depth (real or clichéd) and an all-star cast (independence day, Armageddon etc), well then, this movie would definitely be a disappointment.

Well, some people might have been looking for those rare gems, movies with style and a great story but for whatever reason ignored by the establishment (Cube, Cypher, Donnie Darko when it went straight to video because of 9/11 and an airplane crash, despite being one of the best movies ever made).... and again they were in for a disappointment.

So, you might think, why does this lunatic gave it an 8 then? That's actually quite simple, this is a B-movie, shamelessly so, and as such it succeeds in its intent and entertains to no end.

From the very opening, a quiet evening in rednecks-ville with booze, guns and alien ships crashing behind the barn, we're immediately reminded of classic B-movies such as Killer Clowns from Outer Space, Wild Zero, or maybe the pulp fiction that inspired many Tarantino movies. However, while Tarantino tries to invest his silly, gory movies with a serious background that rarely fits, Alien Opponent is a tongue-in-cheek gore fest that entertains us with action, blood, corny dialogs and bizarre deaths all extremely funny.

The movie, as long as a silly, gory B-movie suits your tastes, flashes by in an instant, never boring and always enjoyable. For a bit of mindless fun and gratuitous, silly violence, this movie is a real gem, and in my opinion much more fun than pretentious Hollywood efforts like the recent Sherlock Holmes movie, check it out.

PS I recently watched it again and I had to change the score to a ten. Stupid movie, yes, but really funny. I still think many people just don't get that it's meant to be cheesy and silly. That's what great B-movies are.

This movie knows it's place, and revels in it.
rushknight1 November 2013
If you're reading this far, it probably means you're hoping to make sense of the title of this review. So let me explain: This movie is fairly low budget, has cheesy clichés everywhere, relatively poor special effects, and generic acting and simplistic dialogue that adheres very strictly to the cookie-cutter character types that populate the script.

Don't get me wrong, all of that is what actually what makes this film GOOD.

Aside from acting, production value, and good special effects, a good movie is made from two other very vital ingredients: cohesion and honesty.

When the director(s) and creators of a movie understand exactly what it is they are trying to convey, and then they creatively use all of the tools in their bag to clearly convey it, the result is a movie with good cohesion. It makes sense, it allows you to follow the story easily, and wraps you into the story.

What do I mean by honesty? I mean that some movies try very hard to be more than what they are, and it often comes off as weak and even a little pretentious.

Alien Opponent puts forth no pretenses. It knows exactly what it wants to be: a fun hillbilly lovin' action/sci-fi comedy.

My only real complaint is that the action sort of dries up towards the end, making things a little slower. They could have used even more characters on the battlefield.

I enjoyed this movie.

Well done!
tomrunelian14 April 2012
I know what you're thinking. "Look at this a#%hole. He gave it a ten. Probably a relative of somebody in the crew, or some local who was cast as an extra". And I perfectly understand. IMDb is bursting at the seems with ÜBER-overwhelming reviews from cast, crew, extras and even producers in "disguise". You know the drill - "honest" opinions in all "objectivity" to increase the ratings.

But the answer is no. I have nothing to do with the making of this film...AT ALL! I simply loved this little gem - and gave it a ten for being "the little film that could".

The story is paper thin, the budget ultra low and the actors are light years away from even being in the vicinity of "mediocre". But still - these guys seem to really know what they're doing. The sound - both mix and editing - PRISTINE. Cinematography and film editing - FLAWLESS! The special effects - CGI, robotics and latex - EXCELLENT! To sum it up - the technical side is, surprisingly enough, grade A. How they pulled it off is beyond me.

What IS certain - the team behind this film LOVES making movies. Call me crazy (as you think I am anyway), but it seems that somebody actually cared and took pride in finishing this little project at the highest level possible with the means that were available. There's a "let's use the few dollars we have to make something really cool"-attitude here. You'll see what I mean, if you ever decide to rent this flick (and throw away your hard earned money). It's all in the details.

As for the story (paper thin...remember?), the creators elaborately underline from frame one that this is not to be taken seriously. Under ANY circumstance. This is MEANT to be over the top. Just sit back, enjoy the ride and the "what the f#%k???"-moments, which are plentiful.

This is probably the best 80 minutes I'll never get back. For sure.

The Godfather Of B-Movies
Immyr23 May 2012
Well just discovered this little gem.

How can we describe this film. There is no scenario. It could be sponsored by Tarantino after two or three (definitively 3) joints and perhaps even without any ;) The little dialog is excellent. The actors really enjoyed themselves. I definitively enjoyed myself seeing the actors enjoying themselves in this very enjoyable film. The special effects are above good for the budget.

So shut your brain off for 80 minutes, call out your friends, and give yourself a great moment of hilarious gore :)

If you're a real "cinephile" and you like to explore every genre, well this little one can be on of the godfathers of the B-movie kind. Going certainly to look after Doolan and Theys (screenwriter and director)of Alien opponent. They really know what they are doing !

Hilarious and funny alien comedy
kannibalcorpsegrinder2 October 2012
After a spaceship crash lands in their junkyard, the owners offer up a reward to whoever will kill it, leading every person in town to enter the territory to attempt to take it down but finding the job far more difficult than they imagined when the alien decides to fight back.

This here was an admittedly cheesy and goofy entry that was quite decent overall. Most of the film's charm comes from the general storyline here since it's far funnier than it is scary as the entire film is sold on the concept of a neighborhood getting together to hunt down and kill the alien that crash-landed nearby. How it comes across is just quite the goofy setup that it's entirely comical to the point of ludicrousness that is driven by the fact that it's all based on such a ludicrous idea of a group offering a reward for the capture of the alien and the proof of its defeat that there's a very goofy tone on display that gives this the kind of feel that matches the high level of gore and rather fun action scenes which altogether are a joy to watch. With the hunting and stalking scenes taking up a large majority of the time, it makes for some pretty entertaining scenarios here with the comically inept hunters being given full-reign to get knocked off quite readily as the continuous assaults result in some fun here coming upon the numerous traps and encounters with the creatures' machines that take out the attempted hunters which gets really fun. The kills get pretty gruesome, leading to a lot of bloodshed, and that comes about from the high body count which is rather nice as well which combines with the rather fun final half here to give this one some positive points about it. The film's biggest issue here comes from the very core of the film's premise, which even though it's exceptionally cheesy is so unbelievable and unrealistic that there's so little chances to get sucked into the film/ that such a situation like this, having an alien being crash-land in a small-town junkyard in full-view of many of the citizens, should be cause for more concern and intervention from the authorities than what's given here as there's nothing about the accident needing to be investigated or looked into, and how it's not made into a bigger deal manages to feel so hackneyed and contrived that it borders on the ridiculous. Granted, a strong case can be made than it's not supposed to be a horror film anyway with the amount of cheesy and situations and goofy humor featured, but there's way too much here that doesn't seem likely to happen. Likewise, some of the humor does fall a little flat by relying on a series of nonsensical gags and lame plotlines that should've been quite funny but just doesn't quite come close to generating the kind of goofy humor featured along the way here as that's a big problem here. The other big problem here is the woeful CGI on display, which doesn't look at all realistic or convincing and shows off its usage at every turn here which does carry throughout the whole film. Though the energy and momentum make up somewhat for these flaws, it's negative issues doe hinder this one.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence, Graphic Language and Nudity.

Superb Science Fiction/Horror Film & Profound Social Commentary
jlthornb519 July 2015
Powerful and insightful observation of small town life and a backward population's unsophisticated reaction to something they can't understand. Director Colin Theys, working from a deeply disturbing script by screen writer John Doolan, takes an alien invasion and turns it on its head as he creatively explores the irrational fear of outsiders inherent in many Middle American settlements. The blood and gore required of any horror film is present in this film and is indeed somewhat shocking at times. The terror is also almost unendurable and the intensity unrelenting. However, this still is one of the most incisive and significant films dealing with small-minded, closed communities and their fear of the unknown. A fine cast gives uniformly superb performances, with Roddy Piper particularly outstanding in the role of a heroic priest who is transformed by his encounter with evil.

To be unique,or not to be
FounHUGO24 July 2019
If I take this poor budget into account to evaluate the film, then I will give it a full ten stars. Ok, let's be more objective. This movie is really good except for some (or very) simple scenes. Group imagery, humanity mining, humor, irony, deconstruction of American culture... Even if it is compared in the history of film, it can still be said to be unique. In fairness, I give it eight stars.

A fun sci-fi horror comedy with Berserker Roddy Piper
jackwolff-0645715 November 2023
This movie really delivers with the gore. It could be hard for people to accept because it sets up a lot of your typical action hero characters and then kills them off in silly ways. A lot of people accidentally kill each other. But it delivers with Roddy Piper and you even get the ending that you would want from a movie like this but the director says no I'm going to give you the ending I want and that's where it kind of goes off the rails in the last 15 minutes. I kind of wish that was included as an alternate ending on the disc. I think this would have been more of a cult classic if he just gave us the ending we wanted. Up until that point the movie really delivers especially if you're a fan of Roddy Piper and B movies. You'll be surprised with all the directions this movie goes. And even when it goes the direction you don't want it to go, you still get something that you hope for-Berserker Roddy Piper.
