Real talk: Michel Gondry’s career is fascinating and also a mess that’s all over the place. And depending on who you are this is either a plus or minus. On one hand, the French filmmaker has been called a visionary on the level of Spike Jonze, but there’s an argument to be made Gondry's great films are far and few between. A lot of them have plenty of cool concepts in them and not all of them work (“Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind” easily being his best). Gondry also has some clunkers like “The Green Hornet,” and even “Be Kind Rewind” is super uneven (though it has a lot of good stuff too). But fantastical, wacky and quirky is really only just one reading of Gondry’s career and doesn’t take in the full picture. Gondry’s also very big in the documentary field,...

Michel Gondry is no stranger to experimentation. In the past five years, he has made a big studio adaptation of "The Green Hornet," a documentary about his aunt called "The Thorn in the Heart," the real time story of some Queens high schoolers on the bus "The We and the I," and the fantasy drama "Mood Indigo." Even so, his latest completed project is unique: Solely consisting of a conversation between the filmmaker and noted linguist Noam Chomsky, "Is the Man Who Is Tall Happy?" relies on Gondry's hand drawn animations and voiceover to explore Chomsky's rich theories of language. The movie, which closes the Doc NYC festival this week, will be released by IFC Films on Friday. Gondry spoke to Indiewire about his experience with the project and how it compares to both his recent work as well as his earlier music videos. In the movie, you state a...

While recent efforts like the documentary "The Thorn In The Heart," the superhero blockbuster "The Green Hornet," and indie "The We And The I" have all allowed Michel Gondry to take some detours, it's been a while since we've seen a movie that's, well, Gondry-esque. But it looks like the filmmaker is firmly back in his wheelhouse with "Mood Indigo," which debuted a gorgeous trailer about a month ago. And with its spring release overseas gearing up, some fresh promo material has arrived. New character posters have dropped for the movie, centering on leads Audrey Tautou, Omar Sy and Gad Elmaleh. Based on Boris Vian's 1947 novel, "L'Ecume des jours," the film tells the tale of Colin (played by Romain Duris), the wealthy inventor of an olfactory musical instrument. He marries Chloe (Tautou), but unfortunately she falls ill during their honeymoon thanks to a water lily that enters her lung,...

While he was responsible for one of the best films of the '00s with "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," it's been a while since we really fell for something by Michel Gondry. Follow-up "The Science Of Sleep" had its charms, as did documentary "The Thorn In The Heart," but his major films like "Be Kind Rewind," "The Green Hornet" and "The We & the I" have swung between being cripplingly uneven and borderline unwatchable. But we're always hopeful for a return to form, and it looks like it might have arrived in the shape of his return to French-language cinema for "Mood Indigo," the first trailer for which has just arrived. Featuring an all-star cast of Romain Duris ("The Beat That My Heart Skipped"), Audrey Tautou ("Amelie"), Gad Elmaleh ("Midnight In Paris") and Omar Sy ("The Intouchables"), the adaptation of Boris Vian's 1947 novel...

It has been a while since Michel Gondry fans got a film from the director that was, well, Michel Gondry-esque. His last three features have been a documentary ("The Thorn In The Heart"), a mainstream superhero flick ("Green Hornet") and a lo-fi indie ("The We And The I"), the latter two of which found his whimsical flourishes mostly pushed to the sidelines. But as the plethora of set pics from his latest endeavor "Mood Indigo" have revealed, this will be full on Gondry with strange props galore, and now the first official images from the movie give an even closer look at the oddball world he's creating.
Starring Audrey Tautou, Omar Sy, Gad Elmaleh, Charlotte Lebon, Alain Chabat, Aissa Maiga, Philipe Torrenton and Natacha Regnier, the film is based on Boris Vian's 1947 novel, "L'Ecume des jours," and tells the tale of Colin (Duris), the wealthy inventor of an olfactory musical instrument,...

For a while it seemed like we all knew what to expect from Michel Gondry, the visually inventive director behind Human Nature, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep. He made visually lush, narratively oddball stories, often scripted by Charlie Kaufman, and seemed to take dreams and fantasies and treat them like dead-serious parts of real life. But then he made the low-key Be Kind Rewind, a flawed film but a charming little story about a neighborhood coming together through filmmaking. Then he made the even tinier The Thorn in the Heart, a documentary about his aunt. By the time he signed on to Sony's superhero effort The Green Hornet, it seemed clear Gondry was following no compass but his own-- and your mileage may vary, but I find that way more interesting than him trying to repeat Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind over and...

Somewhere (15)
(Sofia Coppola, 2010, Us) Stephen Dorff, Elle Fanning, Chris Pontius. 98 mins
Let's see: a poor little lost girl; a distant, powerful father figure; artsy observations on wealth and fame – Coppola's hardly hurling herself out of her comfort zone. But there's just enough to make it work, with Dorff's disengaged movie star struggling to bond with his daughter, get a life and check out of Hotel California. It's an almost structureless essay on how celebrity is wasted on the famous.
The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader (PG)

The seafaring odyssey was always the series' most cinematic proposition, and if you can get over the stagey acting and religious homilies, it's a solid kids' adventure.

The Thorn in the Heart (L’épine dans le coeur)
Directed by: Michel Gondry
Cast: Suzette Gondry, Jean-Yves Gondry, Michel Gondry
Running Time: 1 hr 25 mins
Rating: Unrated
Release Date: May 28, 2010
Plot: Gondry makes a very personal film about his Aunt Suzette and cousin, Jean-Yves. Though ostensibly about her years as a teacher in small schools in the French countryside, the relationship between mother and son steals the focus of the film.
Who’S It For? Fans of Michel Gondry who would like to know more about him and where he gets his unique world view.
Expectations: I love Gondry’s films and music videos, he has such a unique style, but I wasn’t sure how that would transfer to a documentary.
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
Suzette Gondry as herself: Michel’s aunt is a lovely woman who seems very personable and fun. She doesn’t seem like the focus of a documentary though.

Quirky French director Michel Gondry largely eschews his usual clever camera tricks and crafty artificiality in the documentary The Thorn In The Heart. The movie features a few Gondry-esque touches—toy trains to illustrate a change of location, a mix of different types of film and video, “behind the scenes” footage immediately prior to an interview, and so on—but for the most part, Gondry keeps the movie simple and on-task. The Thorn In The Heart is intended to document the life of Gondry’s aged aunt Suzette, and that’s exactly what it does. Why Suzette Gondry? From an ...

Upon watching the first scene in Michel Gondry’s family documentary The Thorn In The Heart unfold, I started to get a sinking feeling and sneaking suspicion that this film might wind up being an exercise in tedium– and in French no less. In fact, even her family who sit around her at the dinner table seem to have trouble getting through it.

Michel examines Suzette’s years as a schoolteacher and her life in rural France. During the course of filming the documentary, new family stories are unearthed and Michel uses his camera to explore them in a subtle and sensitive way. It had its world premiere screening at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and will be released April 2nd in select theaters.

Startup distributor Oscilloscope is finding some eternal sunshine.
The company has scooped up North American rights to Michel Gondry's new project, a documentary called "The Thorn in the Heart" that played the recently wrapped Festival de Cannes.
The film, which was a selection in the Un Certain Regard section, is a passion project for the director. Titled "L'Epine dans le Coeur" in French, the French- and English-language pic centers on schoolteacher Suzette Gondry, the director's aunt and matriarch of his family, and her relationship with her son.
In the process it tells both a personal tale of one family's secrets and a larger story of life in rural France. Partizan Films produced and financed the pic.
Oscilloscope co-founder and former Beastie Boy Adam Yauch called the title "a sincere doc on a subject that is so close to (Gondry's) heart."
The company will release theatrically as well as on DVD and via digital platforms.

No, the weird and wonderful Michel Gondry hasn't sold his aunty on the black market for cash to make papier mache models: he has just found a distributor for his new documentary in the shape of the Beastie Boys' film brand Oscilloscope Laboratories, headed up by band member Adam Yauch (a.k.a. Apparently, there might be a market for the the documentary/personal look at the life of a Gondry family matriarch, aunt Suzette Gondry, and her relationship with her son, Jean-Yves - Oscilloscope Laboratories certainly thinks so. L'Epine dans le Coeur (a.k.a The Thorn In The Heart) has been picked up by mini distributor making it their only Cannes purchase so far (in 2009) --- not including the pick up (and announced during Cannes) of La Loi from master filmmaker Jules Dassin.
