The world is bleak and we could all use a laugh and yet, for some reason, the shows we classify as “comedies” these days — “The Bear”, “Ted Lasso”, and more recently, “Baby Reindeer” — all tend to deal in subject matters that don’t always give us the ha-ha’s we’ve come to expect from the genre. There are outliers however, such as “Abbott Elementary”, which, in a recent episode, managed to find the funny in the unfunny of one of the previous shows listed, as well as “Hacks”, whose delayed third season begins on May 2 and couldn’t be more needed.
Ahead of the Season 3 premiere, Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky spoke to The Hollywood Reporter to share their views on the lost art of comedy.
“To even be making a comedy today, we feel really lucky,” Statsky said. “For some reason, there seem to be fewer and fewer of them.

Keeping a television series fresh and engaging after its first few seasons is always a difficult task. It often separates the classic TV shows from the also-rans. And it’s often even tougher to pull off for a network comedy or sitcom. In many ways, that’s why it’s a relief that the third season of “Abbot Elementary” may arguably be one of its best. A major reason for that has to be Janelle James‘ portrayal of the blunt and take-no-prisoners elementary school principal, Ava.

We're back in class with another fun episode of Abbott Elementary!
This was probably the best episode of the season, and for that reason, we're giving it five stars.
When you have an ensemble cast like this one, it can be hard to make sure everyone's story gets told. But the writers of this show know what they're doing, and it never feels like anyone is left behind.
The big news from Abbott Elementary Season 3 Episode 10 was Janine's big career decision. We definitely saw it coming, as she's been dropping hints about how much she misses being in the classroom all season.
The district fellowship was a nice storyline for her because it gave her opportunities for growth and helped her understand where she really wanted to be.
Plus, it gave us Manny, who will be missed as the show pulls away from the district. Maybe they'll find a way to keep him involved,...

The current category champ, “The Bear,” is looking to become the 10th series to win this award for both of its first two seasons. It would join “The Phil Silvers Show,” “All in the Family,” “Taxi,” “Cheers,” “The Golden Girls,” “Frasier,” “30 Rock,” “Modern Family,” and “Ted Lasso” on this honor roll.
Of the seven other 2023 Best Comedy Series nominees, only “Abbott Elementary” and “Only Murders in the Building” are eligible to contend again. “Barry” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” officially concluded in spring 2023, while the futures of both “Jury Duty” and “Ted Lasso” remain uncertain. That leaves “Wednesday,” the confirmed second season of which will not air in time to qualify for consideration.

One of TV’s most popular families may soon be saying goodbye for good.
Currently in its sixth season, The Conners has yet to be renewed or canceled by ABC.
Deadline reports that the Roseanne follow-up has yet to begin negotiating deals with its stars, including John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, and Sara Gilbert.
The focus is renewal negotiations between the studio and the network to keep the show on the air for a seventh and final season.
The Conners rose like a phoenix out of the ashes of Roseanne, which was canceled despite a huge reboot season after leading lady Roseanne Barr’s controversial comments about Valerie Jarrett.
The series has been a strong performer for ABC, but could the show seriously be canceled ahead of a pre-planned final season?

Based on the combined predictions of over 2,000 Gold Derby users, Lily Gladstone (“Under the Bridge”) and Walton Goggins (“Fallout”) are not generally expected to reap 2024 Emmy bids at this time. However, their chances of soon reaching predicted nominee status greatly improved over the past week thanks to their new category placements. The limited series actress’ odds jumped from 100/1 to 66/1 after she migrated from lead to supporting, while the dramatic actor went from 62/1 to 37/1 by making the opposite move.
Gladstone’s “Under the Bridge” cast mate, Riley Keough, joined her in switching from lead to supporting but still retains her original 100/1 odds. The other two performers who rose above their previous 100/1 odds this week are lead actress Julianne Moore (“Mary & George”) and featured actor Mark Ruffalo (“All the Light We Cannot See”), both of whom hail from limited series.
At this point, the non-continuing series races are proving to be the most dynamic ones overall.

When The Jonas Brothers open their show in Brisbane by walking out to your animated kid show’s theme tune, then that theme song and that show have done way more than entertain some 6-year-olds. The show in question, “Bluey,” has been a phenomenon for a while — it’s approved by the kids of “Abbott Elementary” as well as millions worldwide — and the music by composer Joff Bush and a coterie of talented collaborators has fueled two albums and untold instances of “Dance Mode.”
Music has always anchored the wordless sequences where “Bluey” reaches its most poignant heights — whether gently cribbing from Gustav Holst as younger sister Bingo swims past the planets in her dream in “Sleepy Time” or ever-so-slightly tweaking a recurring theme as Rusty walks off the cricket pitch in “Cricket” and high fives his future self as that Rusty steps up to a much bigger stage. But the latest,...

Along the way, several of the stars of the show have amassed a fortune. We’ve rounded up the main cast of Abbott Elementary, and ranked them from lowest to highest estimated net worth.

Second in a series on broadcast network series renewals. This is a rarity — it’s still mid-April and ABC has already made decisions on all of its existing drama series.

The Rookie will continue to gain veteran status as ABC has renewed the police procedural for a seventh season, TV Insider has confirmed. Season 6, which debuted in February after being delayed from the usual fall slate by the dual Hollywood strikes, boasted strong ratings: The premiere, which aired on February 20, ABC saw 11.9 million viewers tune in across all platforms in the Live+35 ratings timeframe, which is the series’ highest since October 2018. It also boasted the highest rating among the adults aged 18-49 demographic, with a 2.9 rating. On linear alone, the series boasted 7.23 million in the same timeframe. This is but the latest ABC scripted renewal for the 2024-2025 season, following the network’s orders for 9-1-1 Season 8, Abbott Elementary Season 4, and Grey’s Anatomy Season 21. Ending this year are The Good Doctor and Station 19. The Rookie premiered in 2018 and features Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, an ordinary, middle-aged man who...

Maybe the show should be called The Veteran from now on?
ABC has renewed its drama series The Rookie for a seventh season in 2024-25. The police procedural starring Nathan Fillion — which passed the 100-episode mark earlier this season — continues to draw decent-sized audiences for the network, even as it has outlived its title.
The Rookie is so named because at the show’s outset, Fillion’s John Nolan is the oldest rookie in the Los Angeles Police Department. Six seasons in, Nolan’s rookie status is long gone, but he “has used his life experience, determination and sense of humor to keep up with rookies 20 years his junior,” as ABC puts it in the season six logline. Mekia Cox, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Melissa O’Neil, Eric Winter, Jenna Dewan, Shawn Ashmore, Tru Valentino and Lisseth Chavez also star.

David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.

With the 2024 Oscars and the 2023 Emmys firmly in the rearview mirror, the film and TV awards calendar is all but ready to return to normalcy after last years Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupted the first half of award season. The last major event to be impacted by the altered schedule is today’s WGA Awards, which took place in an unusual post-Oscars slot after the strikes forced the guild to delay its voting process. As most of Hollywood looks ahead to the 2024 film and TV slate, today’s concurrent ceremonies in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium and New York City’s Edison Ballroom gave award watchers one last chance to celebrate the best screenwriting of 2023.

The strike may have delayed and abbreviated the third season of Abbott Elementary but Quinta Brunson went into it feeling pretty confident that her comedy wasn’t going anywhere: she was told that ABC had picked up the series for a fourth season.
While appearing at Deadline’s Contenders TV on Sunday, Brunson — who was joined on stage by Tyler James Williams (Gregory), Chris Perfetti (Jacob) and William Stanford Davis (Mr. Johnson) — recalled how incredible it felt to know that “ABC trusted us” before they even began production on season 3.
The news of the pickup was made public in February at the Television Critics Associaton press tour.
The comedy just wrapped production last week on the third season. Brunson, who plays Janine in the comedy that she created for ABC, said she still marvels at how far her Emmy-winning comedy has come.
