Sofia Coppola’s distinguished career as a screenwriter and director came much later. Well before her fame with several acclaimed titles including The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation, she made an unexpected Star Wars debut.

In the trailer for Prime Video’s “The Idea of You,” Anne Hathaway portrays a 40-year-old single mom who gets to live out a teenage girl’s dream: embarking on a whirlwind romance with the 24-year-old lead singer of the world’s hottest boy band, played by Nicholas Galitzine. The R-rated film will stream globally on Prime Video starting May 2.
After the couple meet backstage at Coachella, they kindle a steamy relationship. As Hayes (Galitzine) plays Solène (Hathaway) a song on the piano, he grips her thigh. “I’m too old for you,” she insists, before he pulls her in for a kiss: “No you’re not.”
The couple is seen navigating paparazzi while embarking on romantic outings, causing Hathaway’s character to ask, “What about what people will say?” — to which Galitzine responds, “I don’t care what they say.” The trailer features the debut single from the film’s soundtrack,...

If you could sit down with Francis Ford Coppola – one of the greatest titans and entrepreneurs in movie history – what would you ask him? His best advice for a young filmmaker? His favorite movies? Perhaps his go-to ice cream flavor? Well, the director had all that and more to share during a recent Instagram Ama session; yes, Coppola has Instagram, and yes, you can ask him anything.
First and foremost, during the Ama, Coppola was asked what his favorite movies of his daughter Sofia’s were, in which he rattled off her debut, 1999’s Virgin Suicides, 2003’s Lost in Translation, 2006’s Marie Antoinette, and 2010’s Somewhere. That’s half of her filmography – Francis is such a dad! As for his own pictures, Coppola didn’t cite The Godfather or Apocalypse Now or Jack but rather 1983’s Rumble Fish, his second S.E. Hinton movie after The Outsiders (also out in ‘83). As for other directors’ works,...

It’s common knowledge that the bride is the only person who’s meant to wear white at a wedding.
It’s a tale as old as time. This common and beloved tradition has been around for centuries.
Even if a white wedding dress doesn’t symbolize true virginity or purity anymore, it’s still deemed off-limits to wedding guests.
Along with wedding guests, wearing white is also considered unacceptable for bridesmaids – unless the bride allows it.
TikToker @Luize.Johanna shared a video highlighting the fact that her one and only bridesmaid broke this cardinal rule.
Concerned TikTokers have flooded her comment section in solidarity to share their frustrations.
Bridesmaid wearing white?
In Luize’s TikTok video, she starts by revealing her silky white wedding dress and lush flower bouquet.
The messiness takes flight with her on-screen text block that says, “When your only bridesmaid wears white to your wedding.

“Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” “Saltburn,” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” have won the top feature-film awards at the 28th annual Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Awards, which were held on Saturday in Hollywood.
“Oppenheimer” won for period film, “Poor Things” for fantasy, “Saltburn” for contemporary and “Spider-Man” for animated film.
“Poor Things” was considered a bit of a surprise winner given that “Barbie” was also nominated the category, and winners Shona Heath and James Price said in their acceptance speech that they were not expecting the win. The victory might put them closer to a victory at next month’s Oscars, where “Poor Things” has 11 nominations.
In the television categories, awards went to “Succession,” “The Great,” “Reservation Dogs,” “The Last of Us,” “Beef,” “Frasier,” “Squid Game: The Challenge,” and the 80th Golden Globe Awards ceremony. The first three titles were honored for their final seasons on TV.

Another remake of classic – make that two classics – is headed to Netflix, as the streaming giant has just released the teaser for The Wages of Fear, first made in 1953 and later most notably remade by William Friedkin with 1977’s Sorcerer.
In the trailer, we see an explosion and the chaos of the aftermath, with a voice saying, “There is a gas pocket feeding the flames. To put it out, we need to blow it up.” This sets up the plot of The Wages of Fear, which finds a team driving to the location in trucks filled with nitro…and they’re on a timeline of just 24 hours.
Helmed by action director Julien Leclercq, The Wages of Fear looks to bring a lot more of his trademark action to the screen than its predecessors. Henri-Georges Clouzot’s original The Wages of Fear (Le Salaire de la peur) is, as far as I’m concerned,...

Sofia Coppola may come from film royalty, but she’s an artist all her own.
The daughter of Francis Ford Coppola, Sofia Coppola began her career as an infant — appearing as the newborn baby of Connie (Talia Shire) in the baptism scene of “The Godfather.” From there, she had a supporting role in his films “Peggy Sue Got Married” and the third “Godfather” film, filling in for the latter after original star Winona Ryder dropped out. Moving over to directing as an adult, she stunned critics with her 1999 debut feature “The Virgin Suicides,” an adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’ book about five mysterious sisters and their troubled home lives.
“The Virgin Suicides” was one of the most acclaimed indie films of the ‘90s, and established the visual style (a soft color palette and dreamy cinematography) as well as the thematic content that would define Coppola’s career, while teaming her up...

Johnny Marr teamed up with a 30-piece orchestra for the first of a two-night homecoming run in Manchester, England.
Across a 16-song setlist, the British guitar icon reimagined songs from his solo repertoire along with classics from The Smiths and his dance project with Bernard Sumner, Electronic. Highlights included “How Soon Is Now?,” “Easy Money,” and, of course, “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out,” during which Marr paid tribute to his late Smiths bandmate, Andy Rourke, who died this past May.
Speaking about the experience, Marr said that he couldn’t “help feeling a little bit emotional” hearing his songs receive symphonic treatment. “I’ve had two experiences of playing with an orchestra — Hans Zimmer, obviously, and also with Pet Shop Boys — but to actually sing in front of an orchestra playing my own work, that’s a first,” he said (per NME). “It’s been really enjoyable working on the arrangements.

Sideshow Brings Frankenstein'S Monster To Life: "First brought to life by the words of Mary Shelley, the creation known as Frankenstein’s Monster has taken on many forms throughout popular culture. Inspired by the iconic literary character and his visual legacy across the centuries, the Frankenstein’s Monster Statue by Sideshow honors the creature’s horror roots and tragic nature with a new, original design.
This stunningly detailed, fully sculpted piece shows the hulking figure cloaked in the pelt of a black bear and clad in patchwork pants. Two large electrodes emerge from his back and silver staples hold his reanimated flesh together. He is painted with a cadaverous mixture of yellows and reds, emphasizing how Frankenstein’s creation straddles the line between life and death.

Bill Kenwright, the prolific West End producer behind the hit musicals Blood Brothers, Whistle Down the Wind and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat who would later go on to become an owner and chairman of his boyhood soccer club Everton, has died. He was 78.
In a statement, Everton said Kenwright died peacefully, “surrounded by his family and loved ones.” This month, the Premier League club revealed that Kenwright had recently undergone surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his liver.
“The world of British theatre without Bill Kenwright seems impossible,” said fellow theater impresario Cameron Mackintosh in a statement on X. “In my lifetime, there has never been anyone like Bill. He’s totally irreplaceable, and we will miss him so.”

Sofia Coppola has revealed why she almost quit making films following her 2006 movie Marie Antoinette.
While speaking with Rolling Stone, in an interview published online Tuesday, the Priscilla director said that while she “had a great time with Kirsten [Dunst] and Jason [Schwartzman], being in Versailles and in Paris at that time,” it was also “a lot to manage so many people.”
“I was just worn out, and I was just like, ‘Oh, I don’t want to do this anymore,'” she explained. “[Marie Antoinette] was just a hard shoot, and then I was just over it for a minute. My daughter was born, and I was trying to take a pause.”

After the Southern Gothic thriller elements of 2017’s The Beguiled and the broad rom-com antics of 2020’s On the Rocks, which saw Sofia Coppola departing slightly from the aesthetic territory that she’d staked so forcefully in her earlier work, Priscilla finds the filmmaker firmly back in her wheelhouse. Based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 biography Elvis and Me, Coppola’s latest is another impossibly photogenic tale of fame, solitude, material wealth, and female desire in a world that often contrives to deny its existence.
Spanning 14 years in the life of Priscilla (Cailee Spaeny), from her meeting Elvis (Jacob Elordi), the rock ‘n’ roll heartthrob she idolized near the German army base where he was stationed (when he was 24 and she was just 14), to her leaving their lavish Memphis home after the dissolution of their marriage, this is the most ambitious film Coppola has made to date. Yorgos Lanthimos‘ “Poor Things” just moved to the top tier of Oscar contenders with a big win at the Venice Film Festival. It picked up the top prize, the Golden Lion, on September 9. That recognition came just eight days after it debuted on the rialto to rave reviews. The last American feature to win over the jury here was “Nomadland” four years ago. That flick went to sweep the Oscars, winning Best Picture, Director (Chloe Zhang) and a third Best Actress award for Frances McDormand.
“Poor Things” tells the tale of a young woman (Emma Stone) brought back to life by an unorthodox scientist (Willem Dafoe) who is then pursued by a millionaire (Mark Ruffalo). Stone, who reaped an Oscar bid for her first collaboration with Lanthimos on “The Favourite,” is the current frontrunner in our odds for Best Actress. To borrow a lyric from her famous husband’s hit song, Priscilla Presley was all shook up at the Venice Film Festival premiere of “Priscilla.” The subject of Sofia Coppola’s drama wiped away tears from her face on Monday night in Italy as the audience on the Lido exploded in a 7-minute standing ovation for the A24 indie film. Coppola and Presley attended the premiere alongside Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi, who star as Priscilla and Elvis. The actors were granted a SAG-AFTRA waiver to promote the film amid the strike.
Presley was visibly moved by the film. As she dried her eyes, she hugged Spaeny. Coming off the heels of Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis,” which opened in theaters in 2022, Coppola cast Elordi as the King of Rock and Roll in a portrait that isn’t always so flattering. This Elvis is addicted to sleeping pills, loses his...

The 80th annual Venice Film Festival launches on the Lido on August 30. This edition features a slew of Oscar hopefuls including Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” David Fincher’s “The Killer,” Yorgas Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” and Michael Mann’s “Ferrari.” They’re all vying for the top prize, the Golden Lion.
Seventy years ago, there were four now-classics in competition: William Wyler’s “Roman Holiday,” for which Audrey Hepburn would win Oscar, John Huston’s “Moulin Rouge,” Samuel Fuller’s “Pickup on South Street” and Vincente Minnelli’s “The Bad and the Beautiful,” which had recently picked up five Oscars. But the Golden Lion didn’t roar at the 14th edition of the international film festival.
The jury headed by future Nobel Prize laureate in literature Eugenio Montale just couldn’t decide on the best of the fest because according to the New York Times “the quality...

Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla has received an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA, potentially paving the way for the stars on the Venice world premiere to promote the film.
However the big question is will Cailee Spaeny, who plays the title role of Priscilla Presley, and Jacob Elordi, who plays Elvis Presley, show up at the Lido.

Idina Menzel wasn't prepared to be an onscreen mom. In an Aug. 12 interview with Stellar magazine, published in the New York Post, the Broadway star recalled how it felt to take on the role of Lea Michele's mom on "Glee" when she was only 38 years old. "You know, you're worried you're not going to work again, and then people hire you to be someone's mother when you probably should be their older sister," she said of her iconic character, Shelby Corcoran. In actuality, Menzel is only 15 years older than Michele and had only just given birth to her first child when she accepted the job.

Film at Lincoln Center has teed up Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla as the Centerpiece selection for the 61st New York Film Festival.
The A24 film starring Cailee Spaeny as Elvis Presley’s wife, Pricilla Beaulieu, will make its North American premiere at Alice Tully Hall on Oct. 6.
The fest runs from Sept. 29 to Oct. 15, opening with Todd Haynes’ May December starring Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore.
Never has there been a more obsessed-over icon than Elvis Presley, yet no one knew him more tenderly than Priscilla, whose story as Elvis’s romantic partner and only wife has rarely been told from her perspective. Coppola, who often depicts women living complicated lives behind closed doors, follows Priscilla’s love affair with Elvis, played by Jacob Elordi, from her early years as a teenage army brat in West Germany to her surreal arrival at Graceland.

Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla” has been tapped as the Centerpiece selection for the 61st New York Film Festival. The biographical drama about the wife of Elvis Presley will make its North American premiere at Alice Tully Hall on Oct. 6.
“Priscilla” centers on the life of Priscilla Ann Wagner (“Mare of Easttown” actor Cailee Spaeny) and her life and love affair with the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll (“Euphoria” breakout Jacob Elordi). It’s based on the 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me” by Priscilla Presley and Sandra Harmon and follows her early years as a teenage army brat stationed in West Germany to her arrival at Graceland, which became her home and prison.
“I am honored to be back at the New York Film Festival with my new film and to be telling Priscilla Presley’s story, the unseen side of a great American myth,” Coppola said in a statement.

A version of this story about the production design of “The Last of Us” first ran in the Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
If HBO’s “The Last of Us” accomplishes anything as well as conveying the tension and dread of post apocalyptic society and zombies, it is distilling the messy, heartsick pangs of first love. While the devastating third episode of the series depicts a same-sex romance for the ages, the show’s seventh episode, “Left Behind,” also explores this territory, swapping an older couple with a much younger one in the friends-with-potential stage. Through flashbacks, the episode tells the story of Ellie (Bella Ramsey) sneaking out of her boarding school dorm to go on an outside adventure with mega-crush and military rebel Riley (Storm Reid).

Writer/Director Olivia West Lloyd’s feature debut, Somewhere Quiet, picks up after a Final Girl has survived her horror story to examine the psychological toll of surviving. Emphasis on psychological; Somewhere Quiet isn’t interested in the inciting horror event itself but rather in interrogating the complexities that survival brings. It results in a self-assured, genre-bending debut that plunges its heroine into a paranoid nightmare where reality is never what it seems.
We meet Meg (Jennifer Kim) amidst a harrowing escape, bloodied and wandering the street alone. Her husband Scott (Kentucker Audley) comes from an affluent family, and kidnappers held Meg captive at ransom for months until she managed to escape. Readjusting to everyday life isn’t easy for Meg, so Scott suggests a quiet weekend away at his family’s seaside estate. Plans for relaxation and recovery go awry when Scott’s cousin Madeline (Marin Ireland) arrives unannounced.

HBO’s critically acclaimed dramedy Somebody Somewhere is about to kickstart its sophomore season, and when we ask its star Bridget Everett what viewers can expect, she throws us for a loop.
“Well, Sam is pregnant with triplets,” she tells TVLine with a straight face while sitting side-by-side with Jeff Hiller, her costar who plays Sam’s Bff Joel. But once Hiller starts to chuckle, it’s contagious and all three of us are going. While Sam is most certainly not going to become a mom any time soon, major changes are indeed in store for her parents, Ed and Mary Jo.

Mark Stewart, the hulking and dynamic vocalist who shouted, whispered, and squealed over the Pop Group’s dubby, deconstructionist post-punk, died early Friday morning. A rep confirmed the singer’s death to Rolling Stone but did not disclose any additional details. He was 62.
“Mark was the most amazing mind of my generation, Rip,” the Pop Group’s guitarist and saxophonist, Gareth Sager, said in a statement.
“Thank you, my brother,” dub artist and one of Stewart’s longtime collaborators, Adrian Sherwood, said. “You were the biggest musical influence in my...

Exclusive: Wicked filmmaker Jon M. Chu will direct a new film version of the famed Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat for Amazon Studios.
Chu will reunite with his In The Heights producing partner Scott Sanders to develop and shoot the musical treatment of the Old Testament tale of Joseph, who is driven from his home by his 11 jealous brothers.
Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group has long wanted to develop the show into a Hollywood spectacular and had been seeking partners to achieve that aim.
We hear Chu has been “dreaming” about Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat for years, and he is now set to direct for Amazon Studios.
Scott Sanders
The director is currently in the UK filming Wicked for Universal Pictures and Marc Platt Productions with a cast that includes Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey and Jeff Goldblum.

Ti West has locked in an all-star cast for his Mia Goth-led A24 horror pic MaXXXine, with Elizabeth Debicki (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.), Moses Sumney (The Idol), Michelle Monaghan (Nanny), Bobby Cannavale (The Watcher), Lily Collins (Emily in Paris), Halsey (Americana), Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul) and Kevin Bacon (City on a Hill) closing deals for roles.
MaXXXine is the third title in A24‘s first major horror franchise, on the heels of West’s films X and Pearl, both of which were released to much acclaim last year. The ’70s-set X had Goth pulling double duty as Maxine, who sees her pornography-shooting friends violently murdered in Texas, and one of their elderly assailants, Pearl. The latter film, set in 1918, meanwhile, served up an origin story for the latter villain character.
