Director Luke Sparke has announced the casting for his upcoming sci-fi horror feature Primitive War, based on the novel by Ethan Pettus. Primetime Emmy Award and Golden Globe winner Jeremy Piven has been given the lead role, alongside Tricia Helfer, SAG Award Nominee Ryan Kwanten and Nick Wechsler. Together, they’ll be playing US soldiers in 1968 who have been sent to a remote region of Vietnam. They’re an elite recon unit known as Vulture Squad and they only get handed the toughest assignments. All they know is a Green Beret platoon has gone missing in the area, and they’ve been sent to investigate and possibly retrieve them. What they don’t expect, but who possibly could…was that this was the region of 1968 Vietnam that had dinosaurs in it. Well, no wonder we lost. Primitive War will also star Anthony Ingruber, Aaron Glenane, Carlos Sanson Jr

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
When the announcement came that “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” the third movie in Channing Tatum’s male stripper franchise, had the greenlight, it was revealed the film would premiere directly on HBO Max. However, director Steven Soderbergh says a theatrical run is still on the table. “We’re talking about it,” Soderbergh told me recently while promoting the “Magic Mike Live” tour, which makes its North American debut in Miami in October. “It’s certainly hard to argue that this isn’t a movie that’s best seen in a theater, because we have the data. People, primarily women, were going in packs, in large groups, to see the ‘Magic Mike’ movies.”
Soderbergh returns as director after helming the first “M.M.” (the second was directed by Gregory Jacobs). “That’s the discussion with Warners right now — can we eventize this?...

A new month has arrived, which means a fresh batch of movies and TV shows streaming on Netflix. While many are no doubt still making their way through “Stranger Things” Season 4, June brings the arrival of a new season of another beloved Netflix series: “The Umbrella Academy.” The third season of the semi-superhero show premieres June 22 and finds the gang stranded in a timeline where the Umbrella Academy does not exist, while battling not only a rival team but also plenty of timeline-altering shenanigans.
In terms of new Netflix original films, June 17 sees the debut of “Spiderhead,” a psychological thriller starring Chris Hemsworth, Miles Teller and Jurnee Smollett and directed by “Top Gun: Maverick” filmmaker Joseph Kosinski.
June will also see the debut of the new Adam Sandler-fronted basketball inspirational drama film “Hustle” on June 8, while a litany of comedy specials from the likes of Pete Davidson and Amy Schumer...

Any home viewing for “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount) could be as late as after Labor Day, but it’s already #6 at iTunes thanks to PVOD pre-buys. And at #5 on iTunes is the week’s top new PVOD release, “Last Seen Alive” (Vertical/19.99), which also had a single theatrical date this week. Another take on the “Taken” trope, Gerard Butler stars as a husband trying to find his estranged wife while battling local criminals.
Butler has been a theatrical draw, but what’s of note is unlike many VOD-centric action originals released by Vertical and others, this one found an elevated response at a PVOD price and with minimal marketing. It’s also #3 at Vudu, and it’s another example of the often-eccentric universe that creates the home-viewing charts.

A frantic real-time piece of pulp about one woman trying to avert nuclear missiles hitting the US is clunky yet committed
While the rather surprisingly robust box office performance of Top Gun: Maverick has shown, once again, that all really is back to normal on the big-screen blockbuster front, as a sort of precautionary measure, a more-stacked-than-usual summer season of streaming has also kicked off. There are shows with budgets the size of movies, from Stranger Things to Obi-Wan Kenobi to the upcoming She-Hulk and Ms Marvel, and films like The Gray Man, Prey, Secret Headquarters and Spiderhead, all slick enough to be major theatrical tentpoles. Before most of that, and on a far, far smaller scale, drops high-energy thriller Interceptor, landing with whatever the opposite of buzz is on Netflix, modelling itself as an irony-free throwback to summers past and just about succeeding.

It’s Elsa Pataky versus many nuclear missiles in “Interceptor,” a decent Netflix actioner that embraces its formula a little too much but effectively sells the “Fast Five” breakout star as the next action hero. Pataky stars in the movie as JJ, an ostracized Army captain (more on that in a bit) who is assigned to work in a control room on a secret base in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, which is the last line of defense should any America-bound nuclear missiles come from overseas.
