Holidays loom, but don’t fear TBS marathons of A Christmas Story. If, like me, you once enacted some good and let studio classics stream on Criterion during family Christmas, you know the trip home will be easier with December’s additions. (People at Criterion: please don’t report me for logging into multiple devices.) As family arrives, drinks are downed, and questions about what you’ve been up to are stumbled through it’ll be nice to stream their “Screwball Comedy Classics” series—25 titles meeting some deep cuts (10 via Venmo if you’ve recently watched It Happens Every Spring).
Personally I’m most excited about the 11 movies in “Snow Westerns,” going as far back as The Secret of Convict Lake, as recently as Ravenous, with the likes of Wellman, Peckinpah, and Corbucci in-between. I personally cannot stand soccer but I appreciate the World Cup giving occasion for a series...

My favorite thing about Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill" is that it's an epic hero's journey, and, thus, a two-part tale. It's a jam-packed story and naturally lends itself to stretching out into multiple films — way before doing so was not only a thing, but an expectation. After all, "Kill Bill," though completely different in content and style, came before the double finales of the "Harry Potter" or "The Hunger Games" films.
Despite how well "Kill Bill" works as a two-part endeavor, Tarantino does have an idea of which scenes he would cut if the story had been shrunken down into a 3-hour picture. In 2012, he told IGN:
"The Esteban Vallejo scene wouldn't be in the movie. If you're trying to tell your story in three hours or so, you don't need that scene. I think that's one of the most mesmerizing scenes in the movie. The anime scene that everyone likes,...

More corpses and police ignorance force Gino to take measures into his own hands, but darkness looms and infection spreads in AHS: NYC’s latest.
“Protect and fucking serve.”
Shame is an all-consuming emotion that doesn’t discriminate in the same way that a serial killer does with its victims or police do with their casework. Everyone is capable of some modicum of humility, but the disenfranchised figures who are under the thumb in American Horror Story: NYC are especially susceptible to palpable shame. This is a season that’s full of deeply closeted characters. Killer. Adulterer. Homosexual. Shame often spirals and takes on many forms, but it’s frequently steeped in the lies that we tell ourselves, even when we should know better. And what’s a bigger lie than a conspiracy theory, which has the power to become an echo chamber of psychosis as desperate individuals get lost in circuitous group thought.

A list of new streaming releases on Netflix, what a concept!
Netflix’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by the return of one of the great sci-fi comedies ever. Natasha Lyonne is set to return as the temporally displaced Nadia on Russian Doll season 2 on April 20. The first season of the show premiered in 2019 and appeared to tell a rather complete story about one Brooklyn woman’s experiences of dying over and over again. But Lyonne and fellow producers Leslye Headland and Amy Poehler still have some story to tell. Netflix is undoubtedly very happy to let them continue to tell it.
