Odd Taxi defied the odds of mystery storytelling
pranayjalvi26 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Odd Taxi is a kind of anime which will attract less audience, but the ones who miss this are the unlucky ones.

Odd Taxi is an original anime with pieces of puzzle that needs to be solved, and my word it was brilliantly played out. A mystery anime, with unique characters and quite a surprisingly amazing BGM and OST, Odd Taxi had a very good hold over it's premise of 12 episodes. The animation was okay to be honest though.

Each and every episode was interesting, with good characters and a story that didn't lose its grip till the end. Although I wished the real killer would have been apprehended as well, but still the ending cannot be more reasonable than what we got.

Pros: Amazing story with brilliant characters The music was very cool and fit very well to the setting

Cons: I failed to find one

My Rating : 8/10.

Not what it seems
mohammadizadi-1581214 October 2021
It's hard to describe Odd Taxi but I'll give it a shot.

Imagine Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia:

1- A series of seemingly separate stories featuring different people which turn out to be connected later on in the subtlest of ways. A structure commonly known as a hyperlink story.

2- The "plot" is virtually non-existent and it's just a series of regular happenings. You can't point out a single coherent storyline. But somehow it works magnificently.

3- Themes of chance and fate have a play in the story as the connections between the different characters are alarmingly convenient.

4- All in all, it is absolutely breath-taking.

Now, increase Magnolia's runtime to 5 hours, make it an anime (with anthropomorphic animals?) , add an extremely complex plot to it without the hyperlink feel being diminished, throw in a few mind-boggling twist for compensation, along the way don't forget to re-define the entire industry of short film-making with the fourth episode and you have successfully made Odd Taxi. One of the weirdest and "this has no right to work as well as it does"-est pieces of fiction out there.

The plot is really smooth and tight from start to finish. The screenplay honestly deserves to be studied as an outstanding example in storytelling. It even has a twist at the end that comes out of nowhere and has almost nothing to do with the plot but still works flawlessly.

Although it should be noted that having a plot as complex as this requires one's full attention. You have to be alert at all times when watching this show or else you'll miss out on something.

Odd Taxi is an absolute must watch for everyone.

If you still aren't convinced to watch this anime, at least do yourself a favor and watch episode 4.

I kind of randomly picked up this show and it did pique my interest to a degree from the start, but when I reached episode 4, my oh my. It was an absolute knock out of the park.it immediately became one of my top 5 favorite TV episodes of all time. It requires no context whatsoever and can be seen independently. So even if you don't have time for Odd Taxi, do not miss out on "tanaka's revolution".

One of the best this Spring season 2021
Movi3DO29 June 2021
It's okay to skip openings in anime, but not this anime.

There were many unique anime this season, and this was for sure one of them. A seemingly simple anime where everyone were animals with many different stories. However, what made this anime one of the best show this season was how these stories all interconnected, despite how unrelated they seemed at first glance. There were an incredible amount of details in each episode that had significant meanings later.

Watching this anime weekly might be a mistake because you might forget the details, which I did. Because of this, I decided to rewatch the whole thing before the last episode, and I'm glad that I did. As I realized that these stories were related, I became increasingly invested and impatient to see how everything would resolve. It was a big mystery that slowly built up.

The characters were very interesting. There were three episodes that contained a monologue background story from each of the three characters. They were sad, shocking, and dangerously realistic. Our main character was the walrus taxi driver, but there were good stories to many other characters. Also, I had to mention my boy Yano, who was by far one of the dopest character. He rhymed when he talked, and every time he appeared, his lyrical conversation that sounded like rapping almost always followed a beat that was played. He stole every scene he was in.

As I was saying, the stories were linked together and detailed. However, it was so detailed that even the opening gave clues about the mysteries in the show. Also, it was great that many who watched this anime formed theories that mostly turned out to be true. One of them was regarding the animation of the story.

As for problems, I felt one particular story about two comedians didn't really relate to the other stories. Also, I had a problem with the last episode regarding what happened to our taxi driver after the major event.

The show was at heart a slice of life. It reflected some of the people living today. I believe that some watching will be able to relate to the characters.

One last thing I wanted to touch on was the last reveal in the ending episode. I honestly did not see that coming, and the final shot was quite haunting.

Overall, an excellent anime that managed to have such a tight script and amazing mysteries. It is very underrated, and should have more attention. 9.5/10.

BEST anime without a doubt story-wise, this year.
yologamer-7325128 June 2021
This is an anime original co-created by a studio new to the industry. Creating a original this stunning with such a good story is fantastic.

I wouldn't even be surprised if Tarantino was a co-storywriter because every little detail is important and worth remembering. Everything ties perfectly in to the last episode that drop today.

Fantastic ending, fantastic build up, fantastic cliffhanger.

The animation in its raw form may be lacking compared to bigger productions, but that does not matter in the slightest and it is not distracting one bit. The story is much more important than some fancy animation, so my score will not reflect on that aspect. If I would take that into consideration, it would maybe get a 8.5/10.

can't even begin to describe how good this was
beatriketsal8 July 2021
This was unimaginably realistic, I love how everyone and everything was connected and that dose of interesting dialoge in every ep was just what I needed.

This anime is a category on its own and I'm honored to have found this hidden gem.

Believe the hype for this anime is pure gold
kwesib-3217925 July 2021
I just can't express how good Odd Taxi is. It is something fresh and unique and probably deserves to be in a category of its own. Going into odd taxi, I underestimated the show because I felt like its animation style was childish but after watching all 13 episodes, this is one of the best anime of 2021. The whole show revolves around mystery but not in the way of a detective series type. I'm impressed by how odd taxi mimics humanity and potrays humans being humans best. Every little detail is important. As if that were not enough, the climax was full of one plot twist and another. After the ending, you can't help but want more. Over all an exceptional series.

Unique mystery show that will impress most
k-gordo1721 May 2023
Obviously this show could not be ignored with all of the fanfare proclaiming this show as the Second Coming, so eventually I went and checked it out.

Odd Taxi is a mystery story where you follow all of the characters interactions with the main protagonist taxi driver. At the same time, you also follow characters who are friends and foes of the main protagonist who eventually become involved in the main mystery.

I was nervous walking into this show due to some very misleading trailers and questionable reviews I read about it. Thankfully, the show was a surprise for me. It does shine and deserves some of the praise it's been receiving.

The show has a unique animation style and the creators were aware of its limitations for the most part. It emphasized detail in characters expressions and environments when it needed to and was able to mask some of its rough edges at other times. The 3D car animations were agonizing to look at, but they keep the shots to a minimum and used angles to make it look as best as they could, so props to that.

The best part of the show is that characters were so written well that you could relate and care for and understand their motivations. The show is nothing but dialogue, and it uses this advantage by fleshing out the characters as much as they can. They don't just spout exposition all the time, they spend time letting the characters express themselves and their feelings while at the same time progressing the mystery plot. The dialogue is snappy, sharp, and fast. It allows the audience to get sucked into the conversations and remain glued to the screen despite nothing "exciting" happens.

The show is very much against the mold of a typical anime. You can easily imagine this show as an Adult Swim show and not much would change.

The main problem with the show is aspects of the writing. While I do commend some things about it, such as keeping the pacing very fast and letting the characters bounce off each other so well, it does come with flaws.

Sections of the writing has a layer of self-impressed ego attached to it - like an emo middle schooler writing their first script. Characters will force in pop culture references, they'll talk about depression and insecurities like they are the only people on earth who've experienced it, and they'll give the characters quirks like rapping or a martial art and it makes you cringe in your seat. I rolled my eyes way too many times than I care to admit. Someone trying to emulate Quentin Tarantino without the talent to pull it off most of the time. The silliness overstepped its welcome and did more harm to the show than benefit.

The writing and logic start to suffer in the second half. There were many plot elements that didn't add up. The show started strong so it really did let me down when it lost momentum after the first half. Even in some of the best episodes in the first half there were massive missteps in logic that it took me out of the immersion. Characters losing data on their phone that would've normally been backed up based on what they were playing, characters only showing up at key moments even though they have the ability to track their enemies 100% of the time, and other plot conveniences.

Overall, I can totally understand the appeal of this show. It's a breath of fresh air for anime, and I do wish more anime would borrow aspects of this show. The majority will love this show, and If you are on the fence I recommend to give this show a try. You might be surprised like I was.

Unexpected. Let the story surprise you. One of the finest Anime.
kardolph16 August 2021
Odd Taxi is such an unique story that it will hook you up instantly. The Characters are too good and will teach you something about life for sure. The storyline is too unique. The animation is so different and not your basic anime artwork. It's different and it doesn't even feel like an anime. A must watch to experience a great story and the ending. It's too good. Also the opening and ending songs are fire. Give it a go. You won't be disappointed.

Mediocre mystery, decent ending
pjk513 July 2021
Bit of an echo chamber on Reddit and here in regards to this anime and how amazing it is. It would be a 6 but the ending bumped it to a 7. It was a mediocre mystery, and the last 5 seconds of the first 3 episodes was enough for me to continue. I would not put this in the same category of death note or any other upper echelon thriller/mystery. The animation and soundtrack were fine, yea it looks a little weird but that doesn't lose points for me, I thought the way of the house husband has garbage animation but I thoroughly enjoyed that series.

Meh
CartoonMan202023 June 2021
This anime does a decent job of keeping you watching long enough, just so you can find out what happens. The rapping porcupine was what ruined the show for me. Everything else was sub par; animation, voice acting, etc. I admire the show for doing something different, and i think the younger generation might like it, if they were still watching 2D anime. It's an odd combination of new and old together which ends up somewhere in the middle.

The best animation with the best sense of rhythm and atmosphere
o-0041330 June 2021
The story connects one story to another through the story from the main perspective of Ogawa and the two lines of light and dark with the lucky pen, creating an intense atmosphere. Although there are only 13 episodes, the process before and after the story is vividly presented. Some of the details of the story are thought-provoking.

The anthem to the modern life and humanity
qingyuan-5561329 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
No Japanese-style suspense drama has such a political and conceptual capacity, even seemingly insignificant branches are absorbed by Otogawa's "synthesis" and become an important part of the final chapter of the confession. The loyalty of the two comedy artists to art has once again become a clue to the spirit of the screenwriter's tribute to the traditional performance. The narrative skills of writing paragraphs, the life ambitions regardless of fame, and the silence for many years may only need to wait for an audience like Otogawa. . It is a criticism of social Darwinism to think that playing mobile games to make money and kill lives, and to fight for power until the end, "forget the purpose of the beginning", is a critique of social Darwinism; the irony of rap entertainment is Yano's true anger and despair, and he ignores a car of counterfeit money Rhyming feet are not rhyming feet; the most severe is the attack on fan circle culture and idol worship. Not only are all the dark sides directed and acted by the same group of people, the murderous intent of fame and fortune is actually the main line of the plot. In the whole drama, Otogawa went from being incontrovertible to "suddenly wanting to live the life of a cold-hard detective novel". It is a salvation from being unable to deal with humans to re-socialization. We cry and laugh from animals Proof of the recovery from animality to humanity.

Fantastic show.
gerardchalaux6 December 2021
This is such a great show! Highly recommended if you like thrillers and mystery. The show is about a taxi driver who gets involuntarily entangled into a criminal plot between members of a gang, a pop idol group and common citizens, connecting characters in surprising and unexpected ways. The ending is great and surprising, totally worth watching. It's a very solid show.

Gotta say this is not your typical anime, don't get fooled by the animals, the show is not about that at all, it's just a way to portray the character's personalities and it works really well with the story.

A masterpiece
william-eugensson4 September 2022
There is so much that is great with this show! It has great and diverse characters with their own sense of justice and motivations. The music is perfect, the animation is acceptable but it fits the setting well. Above all else the show never fails to surprise the viewer, and that is something that I value a lot. As long as it is thoughtful, of course. I would like to see more anime like it! I think that there were some parts that lay outside the main story that was a bit...strange to add since it did nothing for really. But these elements were in still interesting enough. It is listed at slice of life but if you want to have something relaxed, this is not the show for you!

Incredible.
manmcmanman24 January 2022
Do not let how the show looks deceive you. Despite it's "children's cartoon" animation, which is actually explained in the show, Odd Taxi has a very tightly knit brilliant mystery story to tell. There are many characters and little by little it shows all of the characters' individual stories overlap. One of the best anime of the year.

Good
coles_notes2 November 2022
Written by Kazuya Konomoto, Odd Taxi is the story of a walrus taxi driver in a the world of an anthropomorphic Tokyo, as the many riders of the main character's taxi, Odokawa, slowly have their stories intertwine, eventually involving missing girls, the yakuza, and murder. Definitely an odd show, the title doesn't lie, I enjoyed it through and through over the course of its run, and think it does a good job building its many different characters. There's a lot of themes of fate and coincidence, and due to this some of the circumstances throughout the series get to be a bit unbelievable, but with over a dozen different personalities to keep track of the animation style of each of the animals plays very well with its plot. Of course theres a bit of a twist ending and of course a minor cliffhanger, so we'll have to wait till season 2 for more, I don't mind how / where this ended but I didn't absolutely love it either. Fairly easy to watch and continually complelling, I'd recommend for anyone looking for another slice of life / mystery style anime that doesn't involve middle / high schoolers. Good show.

Every detail is important- if you can keep up and stay engaged
lukecaiex27 October 2021
This is a show for people who have watched know plot formulas by heart and maybe have watched every other anime out there. This is a show with quirky dialogue, short but fleshed out characters, but a mystery that's unhinged. Just when you see an issue being planted, it's either completely disregarded like it would in real life or paid off at the end of the series. If you can sit through 4 episodes where issues are just being planted, go ahead and watch. I've heard good things about the mystery in the show, the cool writing, but man, I couldn't get through 3 episodes. I want the action and resolution arc that I think people are accustomed to.

So Good, But So Underated
garalhoheliu25 January 2022
I go to what matters: the story is great, having a semi-noir atmosphere, Characters are well developed and charismatic, Sound Score is Relaxing, Sticky and Mysterious, Animation is not a SAKUGA, after all this anime was not made to have an animation level MHA, Jujutsu Kaisen or even Pokémon, besides the ending that takes you by surprise, I won't give too many details, just watch!

Zootopia but better
BrokenDarkness14 October 2021
Right from the start, I had an absolute blast watching this one. Great storyline with blissful dialogues, jokes are original, you would never hear something like this in other shows, every character is top notch design-wise, beautiful art style and music. This is Zootopia on drugs, it doesn't fall into that Disney abyss of kinda childish jokes and the ending won't dissapoint you, they've done it so good that you could even put it in a list of the best endings ever. I guess this is what you can call "the modern days masterpiece", you never get bored, must watch for everybody!
