The character development pays off in a brilliant way in this action and character driven episode - there's lots of things to love about 51%
"51%" follows the aftermath of the previous episode with Crane enlisting the help of assassin Lady Vic, who has a troubled history with Dick and Barbara and Lady Vic tried to kill Barbara but wasn't unable to. Kory and Gar brought Blackfire back to Wayne Manor and there were a bunch of character development on both sides of the story. The fear drug is also on the street so anyone is able to buy it, the episode ended with an attack on Tim Drake and his family. More attacks followed and the story of this episode follows with Grayson recognizing that Jason still fears him. Dick convinces Barbara to find Crane with the computer Oracle, meanwhile, Kory and Blackfire visit mob boss Valeska Nox, who offers to give up Crane's location. The story moves with a great pace and the writing is actually pretty good, Kate McCarthy did a great job with making sure the dialogue is perfect and feels so natural to the characters.
Great direction from Nick Gomez, there were also some truly amazing cinematography. The whole episode looked fantastic as the show usually does. Honestly, the road that the writers and producers took for Starfire and Blackfire is actually working for me, it's different. I'll need to give actresses some praise here, Anna Diop and Damaris Lewis gave us some of the best performances of their characters. The costumes were top notch, it's one of those things that this show never disappoints with. The visual effects were also great, same about the fight sequences. Savannah Welch was also great in this episode. There were also a lot of character interactions that I liked and the same with character moments. I want more of Gar Logan / Beast Boy though and it seems like they're slowly but surely developing his character. It's more and better than the second season, but still less than he deserves. I really like how he's growing out of his shell and discovering himself and not staying in someone's shadow, it's the right direction for the character.
There's so much that I love about this episode, so much character development and world building from previous episodes that pay off in a brilliant way. "51%" finds room for well written dialogue that's executed perfectly by the cast, the chemistry they share are perfect. There's also action, drama and scenes that made me smile. The third season have been great and I can't wait to see what more they have to bring for the few episodes left.
