The Highest-Grossing Western Movie Of All Time Isn't Technically A Western
Image
The Western genre has long been a staple of Hollywood and movies in general, but some may be surprised to learn that the highest-grossing Western of all time isn't technically a Western. Since the early days of movies, Westerns have told the stories of cowboys in the Wild West. These movies often take place in the 1800s during the Westward Expansion, but can also be set in modern times. Regardless of time period, the best Westerns play with the ideas of justice, morality, and legacy. Through horseback riding, gun fights, and train robberies, Westerns showcase a specific time and place.

Though Westerns are not always blockbusters, there are a handful of Westerns that have grossed a notable amount at the box office upon their release. The highest-grossing Western of all time is 2012's Django Unchained. Directed by Quentin Tarantino, Django Unchained tells the story of a slave named Django who...

Will Smith’s Desire to Become As Big a Star as Tom Cruise Made Him Run Away From Making Movies on 1 Sensitive Topic Until He Watched a $425 Million Film
Image
The one-sided beef between Will Smith and Tom Cruise was indeed very real at one point. During his early years in Hollywood, Will Smith consciously steered clear of tackling heavy subjects like slavery. His approach began to shift, however, after he watched Django Unchained.

Will Smith from ‘Work Of Art’ Video Feat. Russ | Credits: YouTube (Will Smith)

The film just like it did for countless folks, had a profound impact on him, reshaping his views on the types of stories he wanted to tell about his community. Smith thus eventually chose to dive into the subject matter by starring in Emancipation, the 2022 movie.

Why Will Smith Avoided Films on This Particularly Heavy Subject Matter

Throughout much of his career, Will Smith focused on portraying Black characters in a positive, empowering light, deliberately steering clear of roles that delved into the deep struggles and injustices faced by his community. He sought...

“Absolutely not”: Why Christoph Waltz Will Never Play Hans Landa from ‘Inglourious Basterds’ Again
Image
Hans Landa is easily one of the best villains in cinema history, with actor Christoph Waltz delivering an exceptional performance as the fearsome Nazi Colonel with an unpredictable streak. Waltz played the character in director Quentin Tarantino’s critically acclaimed 2009 film Inglourious Basterds, nabbing the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance.

During an interview, Waltz was asked if he would be interested in potentially reprising the role of Hans Landa. However, Waltz promptly turned down the idea of returning to the role of the Nazi Colonel. At the same time, Waltz had a very understandable reason for not wanting to reprise his most iconic role to date. Here is what Waltz had to say about his role in Inglourious Basterds.

The Thicket Review
Image
Plot: West Texas. A boy who, after his sister is kidnapped by a violent killer known only as Cut Throat Bill, enlists a fierce bounty hunter named Reginald Jones who becomes the leader of the group of outcasts searching for the stolen girl.

Review: If there’s one thing I’ve always appreciated about Peter Dinklage it’s that he often avoids roles that highlight his dwarfism. He’s such a presence that he can take a role intended for a larger actor and make it totally believable. His desire to not be put into a box is quite commendable and it shines through in his work. He’s always putting his best foot forward, and creating interesting characters, which is why I was immediately interested in his new Western, The Thicket. Add in an eclectic group of side characters and you’ve got the makings of one of the better Westerns of the year.

Django Unchained Nearly Featured Kurt Russell in a Major Role
Image
The already star-studded cast of Django Unchained nearly featured Kurt Russell in a substantial role. After starring as the psychotic driver in Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof, and before teaming up again with The Hateful Eight to play the likable bounty hunter John Ruth, Russell was originally meant to appear in Django Unchained as a much more sinister character.

In the original script for Django Unchained, Russell was meant to play Ace Woody, who worked under the main antagonist Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), and trained slaves to fight to the death. He would have been one of many who justly fell to Django's righteous vengeance as another deeply evil character working to maintain Candyland. Russell no doubt has the acting chops to portray such a vicious character, but perhaps the role was just doomed from the start, considering the amount of changes that happened behind the scenes.

Tarantino's 10 Film Rule, Explained
Image
Quentin Tarantino is one of the world's best film directors. He has created a firm legacy, with pictures like The Hateful Eight, Pulp Fiction, and Kill Bill filling up his filmography. Tarantino has turned his talents to all aspects of the industry, whether it be writing, producing, acting, or, of course, directing. While it's unclear how his career will progress after he retires from his duties behind the camera, it's obvious that his passion for filmmaking will ensure that he continues in the business for years to come.

However, Tarantino has a self-imposed deadline hanging over him based on a rule that he himself created. In November 2014, Deadline reported Tarantino's serious plan to go out after 10 films. "I don't believe you should stay on stage until people are begging you to get off," he said. There's a lot on the line for Tarantino, who feels the pressures of his past successes.

The Django Unchained Character Kurt Russell Almost Played
Image
"Django Unchained" is a surprisingly important movie in Quentin Tarantino's filmography. It was his first Western, it marked his first collaboration with Leonardo DiCaprio, and it earned Christoph Waltz his second Oscar in a row while working with the director following his win for "Inglourious Basterds." The film arguably boasts one of the more impressive ensemble casts that Tarantino's ever assembled, and that's truly saying something. As it turns out, though, the cast could have been even more impressive -- as Kurt Russell was supposed to be in it before dropping out late in the game.

By that point, Russell had already worked with Tarantino on his half of the double feature "Grindhouse," resulting in 2007's "Death Proof." They enjoyed the collaboration and intended to work together again on "Django." Unfortunately, Russell and Sacha Baron Cohen ("Borat") dropped out in May of 2012. The Guardian suggested that the project...

K-Pop Powerhouse Ateez on Making History at Coachella, Record Store Day and the Grammy Museum
Image
Just a day before their second performance at Coachella, K-Pop group Ateez gathered at the Grammy Museum for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The eight-piece outfit and its fellow Kq Entertainment boy group xikers are the subject of a pop-up exhibit that opened to the public on April 10.

The exhibit spotlights costumes and props worn and used by the group (consisting of members Hongjoong, Seonghwa, Yunho, Yeosang, San, Mingi, Wooyoung and Jongho) from their most recent album, The World EP.Fin: Will. The album, which all members wrote for, earned the global stars their first Billboard 200 No. 1 in December.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony wasn’t the group’s first outing to the museum. In February of 2022, shortly after their pair of sold-out shows at the Kia Forum, Ateez took part in the museum’s Global Spin Live series, participating in a conversation and performance for a select number of fans.

Every Quentin Tarantino-Written Movie, Ranked
Image
As one of the most pure auteurs working in Hollywood today, Quentin Tarantino's films bear the unmistakable imprint of his vision and mad genius. He has written every movie that he's directed but also authored scripts produced by other filmmakers, which still carry that signature Tarantino style. His penchant for colorful dialog is a dead giveaway that he's had a hand in something.

Following the success of Reservoir Dogs, Tarantino became a hot commodity, and his unproduced screenplays were snapped up, but he was also given several uncredited writing gigs to punch up listless stories. From films as diverse as Crimson Tide to the SNL stinker, It's Pat, Tarantino has played the script doctor. The real meat of his career, however, is the interesting stories and eclectic characters that have flowed from his scripts to the big screen.

How Jamie Foxx's Actual Horse Was Cast In Django Unchained
Image
Django Unchained showcases stunning shots of the protagonists on horseback and Tarantino's hyperrealistic violence and dialogue. Jamie Foxx's horse, Cheetah, became a central character in the film, showcasing their bond in memorable scenes together. Foxx underwent extensive training with Cheetah for bareback riding stunts, resulting in genuine moments of tension and authenticity.

Many scenes in Django Unchained feature the protagonists atop a horse, strolling through the American South in scenic and beautiful wide shots. Django Unchained is Quentin Tarantino's ode to the Spaghetti Westerns that influenced his filmmaking and story writing, and it does so with his signature hyperrealistic violence, crackling dialogue, and incredible performances by actors playing some frighteningly memorable characters.

From the Western's very opening where two slavers are blasted from their horses to the end of the film where Django (Jamie Foxx) does a dressage-like dance with his steed for Hildi (Kerry Washington), these...

This Western TV Series Is More Than a Revenge Story
Image
Many people who stumble upon the new series Django will likely wonder whether this Western miniseries is related in any way to Quentin Tarantino's 2012 film Django Unchained which broke box office records. The short answer is no, although the movie's popularity certainly helps to draw in an audience for the show. If this seems like an immoral use of a famous movie brand, title, and character, bear in mind that Tarantino himself did just this for his own movie, and that his film was inspired by the 1966 movie Django by Sergio Corbucci.

Django Unchained: Django's 14 Greatest Quotes

Django Unchained is a masterful blend of sharp dialogue, vivid characters, unflinching violence. Iconic Django quotes embody journey from bondage to liberation, crafted with skill. The film's heart and soul found in iconic Django Freeman portrayed by Jamie Foxx.

2012's Django Unchained is another masterfully written movie from Quentin Tarantino, and the razor-sharp script exemplified by the best Django quotes. In Django Unchained, Django's journey from chains to freedom is not just a tale of personal vengeance but a powerful narrative that intertwines the brutal realities of slavery with the fantastical elements of a spaghetti Western. Tarantino's signature blend of sharp dialogue, vivid characters, and unflinching violence is on full display, but it's through the iconic Django Freeman, portrayed with fierce intensity by Jamie Foxx, that the film finds its heart and soul.

Multiple past Oscar rivals reunited at this year’s ceremony — did you notice?

One of the funniest moments at the recent Academy Awards ceremony occurred when Best Supporting Actress nominee Emily Blunt (“Oppenheimer”) and Best Supporting Actor nominee Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”) appeared together to pay a special tribute to the talented stunt performers who are so often overlooked for their indelible contributions to the motion picture industry. Blunt and Gosling traded barbs over their “Barbenheimer” feud — the result of their films competing against each other at the box office as well as the entire awards season. If their chemistry suggested anything, it’s that moviegoers are in for a real treat when their upcoming film “The Fall Guy” drops into theaters in May.

While Blunt and Gosling bluntly made light of their dispute, they weren’t the only Oscar presenters with scores to settle. There were several other big Hollywood stars who reunited on the stage alongside one of their past Oscar rivals,...

10 Best Oscar-Nominated Western Movies That Should Have Won Best Picture
Image
Even though some western movies have won Best Picture at the Oscars, they are rare compared to non-western films. Western films often lose out to films from more Academy-friendly genres when it comes to the Best Picture category. Despite their cinematic excellence, western movies face an uphill battle in gaining recognition and prestigious awards at the Academy Awards.

The Academy looks down on the western genre; some western masterpieces have lost out on Best Picture in favor of lesser non-western movies. Like science fiction and horror, the western genre hasn’t always had the easiest time at the Academy Awards. Even when the western dominated Hollywood filmmaking and all the biggest movie stars and filmmakers were flocking to the genre, it was tough for a western to earn any Academy Award nominations. And if a western movie has miraculously earned an Oscar nod, it’s rare that it actually takes home the prestigious prize.

Patient 11, a new four-part podcast series from Sky News and The Independent, tells the story of Alexis Quinn, whose escape from psychiatric care led to a landmark national investigation that has revealed tens of thousands of unreported allegations of sexual assault and rape in NHS mental health inpatient units across England.

Narrated by Nicholas Pinnock, Patient 11 recounts the dramatic story of Quinn, a young mother and former Gb swimmer with undiagnosed autism, and how her three-day admission in a secure mental health hospital turned into a three-year ordeal of isolation, forced restraint and sexual assault, before a daring plot to break free.

Alexis Quinn said: “They locked me up for three-and-a-half years and were prepared to throw away the key. They had no hope for me.”

“And then I learned how prolific it was...I thought it was just me, but it’s not just me, there are thousands of people (like me).”

Tamblyn and Tarantino have a close friendship, with Tamblyn even convincing Tarantino to speak out against Harvey Weinstein.

Amber Tamblyn has a brief cameo in Django Unchained, but it's not immediately clear why the popular actor is in such a small role. Quentin Tarantino's 2012 movie, Django Unchained, is an alternate-history Western that follows Django (Jamie Foxx), an enslaved man in the Antebellum South, who is freed from captivity by a dentist/hitman named Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz). Together the pair set out to collect bounties, take revenge on slaveowners, and free Django's wife, Hildi (Kerry Washington), from the clutches of the sadistic plantation owner, Calvin Candy (Leonardo DiCaprio).

The film aims to tell the story from a Black perspective, reflecting the impact of Christianity on Black culture. Oyelowo's co-star Anna Diop supports his statement, emphasizing her agreement with his sentiments.

Golden Globe nominee and celebrated British actor David Oyelowo has a message for anyone offended by a Black Jesus in the upcoming biblical comedy drama, The Book of Clarence. Speaking exclusively with MovieWeb about the project, we asked Oyelowo and co-star Anna Diop what their thoughts were about conservative people of faith who are historically offended by the concept of a Black Jesus (or Black Santa Claus), with Oyelowo hoping their offense was apparent regarding other depictions of religious figures.

“Well, I just hope they were as offended by Charlton Heston as...

10 Best Non-American Westerns Of All Time, Ranked
Image
International filmmakers brought a fresh, critical perspective to the American western genre, showcasing morally gray antiheroes and blood-soaked violence. Films like Sukiyaki Western Django and El Topo took the western genre to new, dark, and twisted places, blending different cultural influences and unconventional storytelling. Directors like Sergio Corbucci and Sergio Leone pushed the boundaries of the western genre, creating subversive and truly iconic films like The Great Silence and Once Upon a Time in the West.

The western is a traditional American genre, but from The Salvation to The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, some of the greatest westerns ever made were produced internationally. The earliest westerns directed by American pioneers like John Ford and Howard Hawks told clear-cut black-and-white stories about good triumphing over evil. When international filmmakers got their hands on the western genre, they had no emotional connection to the United States and therefore depicted the...

The Most Underrated Cowboy Has Appeared in Multiple Western Movies
Image
Sergio Corbucci's character Django, initially portrayed by Franco Nero, is the best but most underrated cowboy ever to grace the silver screen. Originally appearing in Django (1966) and much later in Django Strikes Again (1987), the character would go on to appear unofficially in an additional thirty-one films, before being adapted into the 2023 TV series starring Matthias Schoenaerts, cementing him as one of the most popular and enduring Western characters ever. The enormous popularity of the original films and loose Italian copyright laws made the character prolific, along with Franco Nero's steely portrayal of the rugged anti-hero.

10 Great Western Movies Made By Foreign Directors
Image
Foreign Westerns often include political themes, addressing humanitarian issues and feminism, which goes against the grain of the genre. Many foreign Westerns have more violent and gruesome depictions of violence, reinforcing socio-economic commentary. Some of the most influential works in the Western genre come from Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America, transcending the United States.

Although there are many great Westerns made in America, there are also plenty of quality movies in the genre by foreign directors as well. Italy's Spaghetti Westerns are the second most familiar works in the genre after American entries, and Australian Westerns are fairly well-known, but Westerns from Korea, Indonesia, Russia, Mexico, India, and Denmark tend to be overlooked. While most Westerns from parts of the world outside of America tend to contain similar iconography to their Hollywood counterparts, such as vast, dusty landscapes, six-shooters, and gruff drifter protagonists, the sensibilities and commentary from foreign...

The Django Unchained Sequel Quentin Tarantino Never Made (And The One He Kinda Did)
Image
In a lot of ways, the release of Quentin Tarantino's 2012 film "Django Unchained" suggested a continuation of much of what he'd explored since the release of his monumental two-part film, 2003 and 2004's "Kill Bill" saga. He was exploring revenge, not just as a plot point but as an aesthetic unifier of many different filmmaking styles, whether it was the Kung Fu and anime influences of "Kill Bill," the '70s car chases of "Death Proof," or the World War 2 panorama of "Inglourious Basterds." Across all of those movies was a single overriding inspiration: the Italian, or Spaghetti, Westerns of the '60s and '70s.

"Django" was Tarantino's first movie to exist wholly in that vein. The theme of revenge was a major element for that film, and not just for its literal story of freed slave Django locating and rescuing his captured wife from plantation owner Calvin...

Why You Should Check Out Netflix's New Western 'Django'
Image
Many people who stumble upon Netflix's new series Django will likely wonder whether this western miniseries is related in any way to Quentin Tarantino's 2012 film Django Unchained which broke box office records becoming the highest-grossing western of all time. In fact, following the enormous success of Corbucci's original Django, nearly 40 films set to release in the following years renamed their projects to feature the name "Django" and cashed in on its success, creating an unofficial franchise where multiple versions of the character exist. The new Django series is no different in that sense.

MIPCOM: ITV Studios’ Cattleya Sets Up Production Company With ‘Gomorrah,’ ‘Django’ Writers
Image
ITV Studios-owned Italian production company Cattleya is joining forces with Leonardo Fasoli and Maddalena Ravagli, Italian writers whose credits include such cross-over TV series as Gomorrah, ZeroZeroZero and Django to launch Dedalus, a new production company which will develop drama projects for the big and small screens.

Dedalus has two projects far along in the pipeline: Everything We Ever Wanted, a theatrical feature about love and friendship set against the world of the 1970s Neopolitan mafia, which Francesca Comencini (Django) will direct; and Erba, a TV series inspired by a horrific crime — the brutal murders of a family of four by their seemingly-ordinary middle-aged neighbors — that shocked Italy in December 2006.

“Over the years we have formed a special bond with Leonardo and Maddalena, based on a unique way of working together which actively involves them at every stage of our shared projects,” said Cattleya founder Riccardo Tozzi, who announced...

Tarantino Wanted Sacha Baron Cohen for a Scrapped ‘Django Unchained’ Role
Image
Quentin Tarantino has openly celebrated the notion that his films "steal" from every movie that came before, beginning with his feature directorial debut Reservoir Dogs which took heavy inspiration from City on Fire. In 2012, the writer-director made his first entry into the Spaghetti Western genre, even naming the film and its character after Sergio Corbucci's Django from 1966. This wasn't stealing exactly, since the immediate success of Corbucci's '60s hit led to almost 40 other Spaghetti Westerns in the following years renaming their own movies to include the word "Django", and capitalizing upon its success. Tarantino's Django Unchained is by far the most different of the bunch, swapping out the quiet caucasian gunslinger for a liberated deep-south slave.

10 Greatest Western Movies Not Set In The Wild West
Image
Western films have expanded and evolved over time, with filmmakers making bold decisions to shift locations and eras, resulting in a variety of compelling stories. Western tropes have been utilized in films of other genres, such as sci-fi and space Westerns like the original Star Wars trilogy, creating a genre of their own. Several great Western movies are set in different locations and eras, including Bonnie and Clyde, No Country for Old Men, and Serenity, showcasing the versatility of the genre.

The Western genre made a name for itself with its endlessly grim and violent depictions of the American Old West, but not all of its films are set in the great Southwest of the final decades of the 19th century. Both classical Westerns and neo-Westerns have made bold decisions to shift locations and eras, and in some cases have altered both. With the genre becoming saturated in the Golden...

"The Archduke of Arizona": Quentin Tarantino's Unmade Django Sequel Has One of His Best Villains
Image
The Archduke of Arizona, featured in the Django Unchained sequel comic book series, is a cruel and cunning villain who rules with lies and cruelty. Langdon forged documents and manipulated circumstances to make it seem like an indigenous orphan girl was the rightful inheritor of a large portion of land in Arizona. Langdon's enforcer, Anvil Charlie, was even more brutal than him, doling out punishments by smashing limbs with a hammer. Django and Zorro teamed up to stop their reign of terror.

While the likes of Calvin Candie, Marsellus Wallace, and Bill rank among the best antagonists utilized in Quentin Tarantino stories, there is one who stands right up there with them: the Archduke of Arizona - a wholly evil yet brilliant man who was one of the main characters in the unmade Django Unchained sequel.

Django Unchained followed the titular Django Freeman as he was freed from slavery and...

Quentin Tarantino's Description of Zorro Proves We Missed an Amazing Antonio Banderas Performance
Image
Fans missed out on an amazing performance by Antonio Banderas as Zorro in the Django/Zorro film that never got made. Banderas, who previously played Zorro in two films, was primed and ready to star in another adventure and was seemingly on board for the crossover. Banderas would have brilliantly brought to life the foppish and impactful depiction of Zorro under Tarantino's direction, adding flair and making an impact beyond just his own story.

Quentin Tarantino had an idea for a sequel film to Django Unchained, in which the titular Django would team up with the legendary Zorro, and it’s been teased that Antonio Banderas would have reprized his role. While the Django/Zorro film never got made, Tarantino did rework the concept into a seven-part comic book series. The book was as tightly written, intricately crafted, and satisfyingly action-packed as any Taranino fan would expect from the filmmaker.

“Terrifyingly Brutal”: Tarantino Cut Graphic Django Unchained Scenes At The Last Second, Star Recalls
Image
Kerry Washington reveals that two scenes involving Broomhilda were cut from Django Unchained at the last minute, including a rape scene and one in which she would run naked down the street. In her memoir, Washington recalls seeing costar Jamie Foxx and Tarantino standing together in a corner before the director announced that filming for the day was over. It's not clear if Foxx is behind the scenes being cut. It may be for the best that the scenes were cut as the movie already features plenty of brutal violence against slaves, including a moment involving Broomhilda.

Django Unchained star Kerry Washington recalls director Quentin Tarantino making a last-minute decision to cut particularly graphic scenes involving her character, Broomhilda. Released in 2012, Tarantino's first Western stars Jamie Foxx as a freed slave who sets out on a mission rescue his wife, Broomhilda, from a sadistic plantation owner. The film earned strong...

Wake Up clip gives a preview of slasher from Rkss, the makers of Turbo Kid
Image
The filmmaking trio known as Rkss has previously brought us the films Turbo Kid and Summer of 84. Their latest is the slasher Wake Up, which had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas yesterday – and we not only have some reactions to the film that came out of that screening, we also have a clip from the film, courtesy of Deadline! You can watch the clip in the embed at the bottom of this article.

Written by Alberto Marini and based on an original idea by Martin Soudan, Wake Up centers on a group of hot-headed Gen Z activists who find themselves brutally hunted after they become trapped in a furniture superstore during an act of environmental protest gone wrong.

The furniture store setting reminds me of an ’80s slasher that deserves to be more popular, Hide and Go Shriek.

Wake Up stars Benny O.Arthur (the Django...
