Swamp mermaid

Four friends - Fay, Violet, Wendy and Allison - have taken a vacation at a Louisiana resort, a place where one guest has already been devoured by an alligator and toxic waste has ruined the water. And when Fay's abusive boyfriend shows up, not even a spell to Ezruile, the protector of women, children and the neglected gets answered.

Then, they find a woman lying by the river who changes everything.

Ezruile isn't the best horror movie you'll see, but it's trying something different. It has something to say about the nature of male and female relationships, about friends and the environment without getting preachy. After all, it's a movie about a mermaid who is conjured by the four women to solve their problems.

It finds its heroines not only dealing with the vengeance of the titular goddess, but attempting to save her from men who would keep her from her divine path.

Director Christine W. Chen - who co-wrote this movie with Camille Gladney - has been building a resume of shorts and television work. You can see some genuine craft and art here. This isn't just another streaming cheap throwaway, despite its low budget.

A somewhat odd movie...

Well, I have to say that was initially lured into watching the 2022 movie "Erzulie" given the movie's cover/poster and a somewhat interesting synopsis. Sure, I had never heard about the movie prior to sitting down to watch it, so I wasn't sure what to expect from writers Christine W. Chen and Camille Gladney.

And now having just sat through the movie, I have to say that this movie was definitely something in its own league, a rather unique and strange movie. I can't say that I was overly impressed by the storyline, as it wasn't really all that interesting, but there were some good enough aspects to it here and there. But overall, then "Erzulie" wasn't a movie that tickled me in any of the right places.

While the storyline is pretty straight forward, it is still somewhat out there. And writers Christine W. Chen and Camille Gladney just didn't manage to put together a wholesome enough script to provide me with much of any entertainment or enjoyment here.

The acting performances in the movie were adequate. I mean, you're not in for any groundbreaking Shakespearian performances here. But the actresses and actors did adequately well with the limitations imposed upon them by the limiting script.

Visually then "Erzulie" was okay. Sure, this wasn't a movie that used a whole lot of special effects, and whatever was there was good enough. The movie could, perhaps, have benefitted from implementing more special effects to spruce up the entire experience.

All in all, I wasn't impressed or particularly bedazzled by "Erzulie". As such, my rating of director Christine W. Chen's 2022 movie lands on a four out of ten stars.

Not Bad

This is the first Low-Budget film I have seen in awhile that was not horrible. If you have ever seen Mermaid Down and liked that, then you will like this one. This is a Mermaid horror done well. I don't feel like my time was waisted by watching this movie. As always be your own judge.

Best Mermaid Movies

One of the standout aspects of this movie is its unique concept. By focusing on the enigmatic character of Erzulie, a mermaid with magical powers, the film offers a fresh take on the mermaid genre. It skillfully weaves together elements of folklore and mysticism, creating an intriguing and captivating narrative that keeps the audience engaged throughout.

An enjoyable enough if slightly flawed genre effort

Heading together for a reunion, a group of friends plans a trip to a remote Louisiana swamp where they come face-to-face with the voodoo-resurrected mermaid guardian which soon starts a rampage against the community forcing them to decide between the creature and the revenge that she provides.

This was a pretty solid and enjoyable genre effort with a lot to like. The main feature to like here is the highly impressive setup that provides a fun building block to the later carnage. Since so much of this one is based on the main group of friends and how they come together to protect not just each other but the creature rampaging through the community, they come off as the kind of enjoyable and reasonable group of friends who would come together naturally feels quite enjoyable with the number of likable qualities they bring together. As well, that sets up the fun here once they realize the creature has been unleashed and the power that she has which leads into a solid series of scenes that provide plenty of fun encounters here where she attacks others so there's a fun finale involving some nice action in the sequence. For the most part, these hold the film up for the most part. There are some drawbacks to be had with this one that holds it back. The biggest issue here is the film's rather scattershot storyline that has way more going on than it really needs to. That there's enough in place here with the group coming back together and going through their own struggles, not just with their recent job loss but also the struggles with their personal or dating lives, would've served this one well enough once they realize they've used black magic to summon the spirit that's now rampaging through the community. Getting to see them together and bonding while realizing that there's a killer creature in their midst to protect from others would've been fine but to incorporate all kinds of excess baggage involving the returning abusive ex-boyfriend, a corrupt landowner, and a toxic waste dump in the area which is all extremely clumsy and awkwardly inserted into this to appear as a fully-functioning storyline when it didn't need to be. The other minor drawback here, which isn't all that detrimental but does hold it back somewhat, is the rather underwhelming pacing in the first half that makes the film quite a bit longer feeling than it should be in this part of the film. The introduction to this one getting a glimpse of the various personal problems and struggles that come to pass so we get a sense of them before they find the girl in the woods which is fine if takes way too long to get going. Establishing all the various subplots and sidestories keeps this one going along at a sluggish pace that makes for a struggle to generate any kind of momentum which is also a part of the problematic storyline having way too much going on. As well, there's also the issue with the budget keeping this one down as it's quite obvious here with the lack of action, flimsy make-up work on the creature, and the generally bloodless kills which are relegated to the aftermath when it happens which hold this down.

It's Time for the Tables to Turn

Four girls go on a retreat, apparently their last one as the funding for retreats has dried up. Wendy Woloft (Courtney Oliviér) has arranged the meeting in the Louisiana river retreat. The owners are away leaving the place to son Rhett (Jason Kirkpatrick) an unsavory guy who we later discover is selling his property to be used as a toxic waste biohazard dump. Wendy is joined by her friends Ari (Diana Rose), Violet (Elizabeth Trieu), and Faye (Zoe Graham). Faye has a boyfriend or ex-boyfriend issue. The mermaid goddess Etzulie (Leila Annastasia Scott) is said to live there. Wendy plans to conjure her and ask for protection and justice. Two of the other girls join her with Faye balking.

The goddess does show up and things get out of hand.

The Film is listed as an adventure/fantasy but also has horror and comedy elements in it. Watchable and predictable.

A unique adventure fantasy indie film

For an indie film, the cinematography, writing, acting, etc. Are done quite well in Erzulie. I'm a man and typically prefer masculine protagonists, but I found this journey of young women fun and appropriate for the story. I don't want to give away too much more, because I believe Erzulie should be experienced minute-by-minute as a film. So go give it a chance! On a final note, Christine Chen is clearly a solid filmmaker, and I'm looking forward to seeing what she does next.

A new take on mermaids

Still Waters Run Deep

Erzulie has made a name for itself as a mermaid movie or black mermaid movie, but the story is much deeper. Beyond the "funny business" is the story of four long-time female friends, each of whom are facing their own dark waters. While each woman experiences their own unique trials and tribulations, their common belief in avenging the societal oppressions felt by women everywhere prove that hell hath no fury as a woman scorned.

The men in this film seem like caricatures, but we all know someone like them: self-centered, short-sighted, and dim-witted. At every turn of the suspenseful story you are hoping that karma bites these butts in the ass.

Watch this film with your tribe and an open mind.

Awesome Movie

I am writing to express my heartfelt appreciation for the incredible film, "Erzulie Mermaid." Having recently watched it, I enjoyed it.

To put it simply, the movie is truly awesome! From start to finish, I was captivated by the mesmerizing storyline, stunning visuals, and exceptional performances by the cast. The way the narrative unfolded, blending fantasy, and enchantment, left me completely engrossed throughout the entire duration.

Erzulie is a creative, impressive low-budget indie from an up and coming filmmaker

Full disclosure, I provided DCP services to the film, so did see the film in a full theatrical screening. However, I'm not affiliated with the film production and my review is my honest take.

As I work on a lot of indie film, Erzulie stands out of from the crowd with a creative, cool take on the mermaid myth. It takes the basic monster in the wild story and gives it an authentic and female-centric approach that is both engaging to watch and nice meta commentary on how this myth has played out in other films.

The strengths of the film are the quality cast, both leads and supporting characters, the nice design of the mermaid and the quality direction that moves the story along, builds the characters and maintains tension.

The technical quality exceeds the budget range and it's devoid of the often found failings of low-budget films: cinematography, edit, sound, music and color are all well executed and don't distract from watching. While I would not call one of the best films ever made, it's better than almost films in this budget range and better than a lot of big budget flicks.

If you like female-centric films with a fresh twist on a classic film genre, it's a solid choice.

First Black Mermaid Movie

Makes A Decent Splash!

This film has some throwback vibes. Feels old school nostalgic-friend reunion movie with some twist and turns. And who doesn't love a cool mermaid?! Think of Now and Then, but add a mermaid. Or Goonies. Could have flowed better in spots and had a clearer message by the end. Like a bit of too many themes at once, but I liked what it was trying to accomplish. Just could have been executed little better story wise. Has some good comedic moments. Interested to see if sequel or not. Overall, enjoyable though!! So if you're in the mood for a fantasy like thriller and love mermaids, give it a watch!!

A future Sleepover Cult Classic

I was glad to attend the NOLA premiere for this one in support of my friends, and knowing how much work and stress went into this one, it paid off. Its low-budget seams definitely show, but this Girl Power romp with a killer cajun swamp mermaid goddess at its center has tons of heart to accompany its humor, scares, and modern feminist attitude, including explorations of a wide spectrum of personal mental health issues and responses to trauma. From the ecstatic response it got from the younger girls in attendance, it's surely gonna become a new sleepover cult classic. Bravo to Christine, Camille, and the rest of the team.

Christine W. Chen is one to watch

In storytelling, cadence is crucial. Christine Chen has skillfully developed the characters in this story and put them into a carefully metered pace that brings the story to an inexorable boil. It takes tenacity and commitment to give a film the look of high production value when the available budget does not reach into seven figures, and to accomplish this requires skill. Chen delivers a visually compelling film with a diverse cast and a solid script.

Erzulie is a mermaid story. The thing is: it is so much more than that. It deals with feminism, friendship, the supernatural, family, traditions and horror. It is a family-friendly film but it isn't trite, as there are deep currents in this story for those who pay attention.

Well worth your time. I bought a copy.

Top Mermaid Movies

Entertaining if Tonally Mixed

It is always fun to watch a flick not made by Hollywood, because you never know what the story or director might be going for. I'll give this team an A for effort. All the main actors were natural and believable. The tone was consistent in some ways but had some over the top comedy hijinks towards the end. You know I was fine with some comic relief, we laughed. Female characters were well fleshed out, yet the male parts were mostly a combination of mean, aggressive, and comedy. I suppose it fits their description of a feminist voodoo mermaid flick.

One thing I had hoped for was less year 2022 Hollywood/politics in movies. I didn't read the descriptions going in so was open to whatever. I haven't seen Chen's other movies to get a feel, but this one sort of ticked off all the current political tropes I was hoping to avoid. Women good, man bad. Even more so, white man bad. Check. Friends/couples must be different races. Check. Non-standard sexuality, check. It wasn't overbearing at least, and I could see these gals being friends just fine, so I could enjoy the movie no problem.

The actors: Kirkpatrick was able to portray various styles quite well. Rose had perhaps the most nuanced portrayal, you could see something haunting in those close-ups, well done. Graham was believable as an abused, broken young lady. Trieu was interesting as someone I've perhaps witnessed as (I'm guessing she is adopted based on her character's generic white American name) the somewhat spoiled adopted kid that cares about friends but is perhaps too selfish to be the heroine. Oliviér seemed genuine and likeable... I think she spoke like a counselor would. Scott was a great choice as a voodoo monster with a slight attitide... her annoyed demeanor while sitting high and dry with the fish tail was funny.

What could have been done a little better- near the end I couldn't tell who was on which team as the struggle near the water unfolded. Also I would have enjoyed more local color... Kirkpatrick's accent was natural, but one of the thug's was more Civil War confederate than natural. One extra with a true Cajun accent would have been nice.

Random things I liked about the setting: The weird houses on stilts, the general store, tubing in muddy water, cypress knees, and an invasive bamboo forest all were nice touches... felt like Southern Louisiana. The idea of a voodoo mermaid was strange yet fun.

New Black Mermaid Film

I recently had the opportunity to watch "Erzulie: The Best Black Mermaid Film" and I must say that it was a truly unique and captivating experience. Despite its low budget, the film managed to deliver an enchanting and mesmerizing story that left a lasting impression.

Another impressive aspect of the film was the visual effects. Considering the limited budget, the team behind "Erzulie" did a commendable job in bringing the underwater world to life. The mermaid designs were stunning, and the underwater scenes were beautifully shot, creating a visually stunning experience.

I recommended you to watch it again and again.

I really enjoyed this film. To be honest I haven't really seen anything like it before, though it did give off Stephen King vibes (a big plus!) without actually being a horror film. I stumbled across this after watching The Lighthouse because it popped up on Amazon as a recommendation (I'm guessing because of the mermaid thing haha!). The story has so much heart too and definitely touches on some deeper topics, many actually, but all takes place in the middle of a spooky ass swamp. As I type this I'm actually thinking it's kind of like GOOSEBUMPS for ADULTS. Maybe that's what I should have put as the review header, "GOOSEBUMPS FOR ADULTS".

Anyway, to wrap up... Cool acting, cool directing, cool story. And looking forward to more from this writer/director!

Not Your Average Mermaid Movie

Erzulie is a mermaid movie unlike any I've seen, which is a welcome take in the mermaid world!

Mermaids are for everyone, not just kids, and this movie proves that as it could be a bit scary for youngsters!

Four friends are on a "friendship anniversary" trip at the place where they met but it isn't quite as they remember. The loving couple that made them feel so welcomed isn't there this time, leaving their son in charge instead. The son is a coke-addict that's accepting payoffs from a company ruining the thing the place is known for - it's river, home of the mermaid Erzulie. The friends have had a rough go of things lately and calling upon Erzulie might help change their luck, so they try to draw her out which sets the whole movie in motion - including death, chemical effects, and a classic fight scene. Not your average mermaid movie.

More Than a Mermaid Film

Erzulie is an independent film stroke of genius! It's the perfect blend of nostalgic 80's camp fantasy we all love and present day drama that deals with timely issues regarding trauma. The writers and director intertwined the folklore of mermaids into a compelling story about a group of female friends returning to their favorite summer camp - minus the usual horror film cliches.

It's this fresh take that makes watching Erzulie so much fun and ultimately so satisfying in the end. The film is as much about the characters facing their traumas as it is about Erzulie, the mermaid who has a distinct way of helping women, and who's facing a major obstacle of her own. It's a well-crafted story about women learning to trust themselves, that it's okay to ask for help, that they have the power to fight for each other and themselves, and that even when nothing seems to be going their way, there's still magic in the world.

But Erzulie is nothing like Ariel. And that's exactly what makes this film so engaging! We never know what Erzulie is going to do next or how the story will unfold for the group of friends.

Erzulie is more than a mermaid film. It really is a film about humanity and friendship magnified by the mysterious character of Erzulie. And it's so much fun to watch! Break out the popcorn, open your favorite drinks, pile the pillows on the floor, invite your girlfriends over, and feel the fantastical, and yet chilling, sleep away summer camp vibes that this film embodies.

Fun fantasy watch with great indie vibes

I grew watching all sorts of creature-features on the sci-fi channel and show like Buffy The Vampire Slayer on the CW. Erzulie was right up my alley.

I loved the Louisiana setting, it was unique. I also liked the great actors and the feminist vibes. It's more thoughtful than a regular "creature feature", as the acting, characters and script is way better. You don't often see an ensemble cast of cool women who treat each other well in this space.

As far as Mermaids go, Erzulie herself was a bad-ass. You wanted to root for her and the women, and you could easily dislike the villains in the story.
