Leading Indian studio Yash Raj Films (Yrf) has had a phenomenal 2023 with successes across theatrical films and streaming and is looking to build on it going forward.
After an indifferent 2022 where the Hindi-language Bollywood film industry was shaded by the mighty south Indian business, the box office roared back in January 2023 with Yrf’s “Pathaan,” starring Shah Rukh Khan. The success of “Pathaan” began a stellar box office year for Bollywood and the film was surpassed only by “Jawan,” also starring Khan and distributed internationally by Yrf.
Yrf’s “Tiger 3,” released in November 2023, is the seventh biggest Indian box office hit of the year. On the streaming front, the studio’s streaming arm Yrf Entertainment teamed with Netflix on documentary series “The Romantics” – celebrating the cultural legacy of founder Yash Chopra – and scripted show “The Railway Men,” revolving around the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy. Eva Maria Daniels, producer of independent features “Reality,” “What Maisie Knew” and “Joe Bell,” died on June 30 in London, after battling cancer. She was 43.
Throughout her career, Daniels maintained longstanding partnerships with producer Riva Marker and A24, worked as a producer for The Mill and Company 3 and served as a consultant for the Icelandic Film Fund.
“Eva died on the same terms as she lived. She played her cards close to her chest. She didn’t seek recognition when she had success. She didn’t seek pity when she suffered. I will miss her friendship greatly, but mostly I will miss seeing what she would have done next,” wrote director Börkur Sigthorsson on Facebook.
Most recently, Daniels executive produced the Berlin Film Festival selection and Max feature, “Reality,” which stars Sydney Sweeney and was directed by Tina Satter.
“Eva was hyper intelligent and had a gift for seeking out and supporting artists.

India is the fastest growing market market in the world for giant streamer Netflix and Monika Shergill, VP, content, for the country, has a clear plan to keep the trajectory going.
“A healthy streaming business, according to us, has to be built on the strong fundamentals of engagement, where we are doing very well, and revenue and profit as a global service. We are a profitable service – in many of our markets, we are on the path to profitability,” Shergill told Variety.
Earlier this year, Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos had said that content watching grew by 30% last year in India and revenue grew by 25%. In a subsequent earnings call, Sarandos addressed the importance of pricing in India, saying: “We’ve got to get pricing and the main payment methods right.”

Mumbai, Feb 18 (Ians) The recently released Ott docu-series ‘The Romantics’ is garnering a lot of positive response and the director Smriti Mundhra feels that one reason that the audience is loving the series so much is that Yrf head-honcho Aditya Chopra appeared on camera after so many years.

In Netflix’s “The Romantics,” a new docuseries about the legacy of Indian director Yash Chopra, there’s one word you’ll barely hear: “Bollywood.”
The Hindi-language film industry was so named as a portmanteau of Bombay (now Mumbai) and Hollywood, but its key players have always hated being defined by the West. At one point, Oscar-nominated director Smriti Mundhra asks her interview subjects — a jaw-dropping lineup of Hindi film A-listers, including Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, and Chopra’s own wife Pamela — how they feel about the term; none of them responds positively.

The Romantics is an Indian documentary series directed by Smriti Mundhra.
Yasi Chopra was a Bollywood film director who died in 2012 and left an immense legacy of movies, memories and experiences that Neflix brings to us today in the form of interviews, files and above all, lots of joy and color.
Chopra made his first feature film in the Seventies and during 40 years of work, left a legacy and a mark in Bollywood that is hard to forget. This documentary series that includes scenes by the director himself and some of his main actors, tries to make us re-live from within, the magic of cinema and above all, his enthusiasm.
A docu-series which, like Bollywood, is happy, vivid, funny and, yes, very sentimental.
Good editing work, inserting interviews in a rhythmic way and which has managed to tell and document a life in movies.
To be enjoyed.

Indian-American filmmaker Smriti Mundhra is again collaborating with Netflix on docu-series The Romantics, which looks back on 50 years of iconic Indian film studio Yash Raj Films (Yrf) and its late founder Yash Chopra.
The four-part series is streaming globally from today (February 14), deliberately coinciding with Valentine’s Day, as Chopra was known for directing romantic films such as Kabhi Kabhie, Veer-Zaara, Chandni and Lamhe.
Mundhra has filmed interviews with 35 figures of the Hindi-language film industry, from major stars including all three ‘Khans’, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan, to producers, writers, critics, journalists, and costume designers.

In its basic conceit, Stranger Things has always been about what’s transpiring beneath the surface—specifically in the haunting alternate dimension The Upside Down, lurking underneath the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. And while Hawkins would be nothing without its underground realm, the Duffer Brothers’ series wouldn’t be what it is without the on-point selection of atmospheric, period-authentic tracks underscoring each scene.
The series’ stellar soundtrack comes courtesy of Emmy-nominated music supervisor Nora Felder, who, in Season 2, tackled the ambience of All Hallow’s Eve, expanding the series’ sonic scope with the addition of major new characters—including Dacre Montgomery’s Billy and Sean Astin’s Bob, who exist on opposite ends of the musical spectrum.

Galt Niederhoffer had a thriving film career with credits including 2010 films The Romantics (directing) and The Kids Are All Right (producing). But in 2015, she accused ex Jonathan Gordon (a former in-house counsel at Barry Diller’s Iac) of poisoning her. A nasty custody battle for their son ensued, with NYC tabloids covering every detail (and Michelle Williams testifying on Niederhoffer’s behalf). Now 41, the daughter of famed investor Victor Niederhoffer has published her fourth novel, Poison (St. Martin’s Press), optioned for TV by Ben Silverman’s Propagate Content. The plot echoes the Hollywood classic Gaslight. Or perhaps Niederhoffer’s own life: The...

The ranks of female film directors are about to swell a little more, as Katie Holmes confirms her plan to helm the upcoming adaptation of the debut novel from Annie Weatherwax – All We Had. The script is being written by Josh Boone (Stuck In Love, The Fault In Our Stars), with Holmes starring and pulling producer duties alongside Jane Rosenthal (Little Fockers) and Berry Welsh (NYC 22).
The story is described as ‘wry and sharply observed’ by publishers Simon And Schuster, and centres on a mother and 13 year old daughter, who find themselves existing on the verge of poverty in small town America, after their old life implodes. Holmes will play the role of the mother, but there is no news yet on wider casting.
While this news will almost certainly be met in many quarters with derision, it is important to note that, of late, Holmes has finally begun to come into her own.

The Romantics finally gets its UK DVD release this week. The Gen Y dramedy chronicling the enmeshed lives of seven college friends was filmed in late 2009 and in the intervening years the supporting cast have gone on to become headline names themselves.
But back in 2009 Katie Holmes was the biggest star on the bill and it is she who top-lines. Capitalising on those Joey Potter powers of irresistibility, she stars as Laura, the one-that-got-away from groom-to-be Tom (Josh Duhamel). Thrown together during the rehearsal and build up to his high society wedding (to her former roommate and sometime friend Lila), their chemistry is as inextinguishable as it is predictable.
Lila (Anna Paquin) loves Tom with all her heart but she is pragmatic and understands how easily his head could be turned. Her friend’s adult lives have complications of their own – nicknamed The Romantics at college, when they were young...

New York -- If you want to get a good idea of Katie Holmes, actress – as opposed to tabloid star – you can't do any better than "Pieces of April," a gem from 2003 in which she plays a ponytailed and tattooed New Yorker desperately trying to prove herself to her visiting suburban family with an improvised, downtown Thanksgiving dinner.
This was back when Holmes was transitioning out of "Dawson's Creek," that teenage soap of a fictional New England coastal town childhood. But Holmes had already amassed an early filmography that any young actress would envy, including "The Ice Storm," "Go" and "Wonder Boys."
The budget for "Pieces of April" started at $6 million, but dwindled to $300,000 and was shot over just 16 days. Writer-director Peter Hedges recalls shooting in "condemnable" buildings with paint dropping off the walls of Holmes' makeshift dressing room.

Here's the scoop: Adapted from author Tonino Benacquista's popular novel, "Malavita" tells the story of a mafioso (that's De Niro) who moves to France with his wife (Michelle Pfieffer!) and daughter (that's Agron) to get away from the mobsters he ratted out.
But since a leopard can't change his spots, he soon is back to his old ways, which soon draws the attention of the mob right to his little pastoral town.
