Hansu's backstory is so tragically touching
Yeolo22 April 2022
Pachinko ep 7 is so well done in revealing the prejudices, hardships and tragic events that shaped young & hopeful Hansu into the cynical older Yakuza Hansu. Tho a shorter episode, it packed so much detail and insight of what life was like for the different classes before & during the Great Kanto Earthquake and resulting massacre of Koreans.

Excellent
ethomas27422 April 2022
Having never read the book but being quite familiar with the historical background, I was wondering if there was going to be an episode that explored this horrific tragedy. I try to avoid spoilers of any kind in my reviews so I won't get any further into the plot of the episode; however, in typical Pachinko fashion, they render outstandingly realistic and humanistic portraits of people and communities that sneak up on you and stick with you. The writing and acting in this show is simply fantastic, it pulls you in and never lets go. So glad I stumbled upon this very special show. Shout out to everyone who made this show happen. Looking forward to next week's finale.

Lee Minho's eyes say everything
chrisking-5672722 April 2022
A shocking and heartbreaking episode.

Lee Min Ho's portrayal of the character Hansu is so brilliant.

In the last scene, Hansu's eyes showed sadness, anger, helplessness, and then made up his mind,in just a few seconds, his eyes say everything.

Amazing actor! Lee Min Ho!

The standout episode made Lee Min Ho acting stand out
healerfaith22 April 2022
I'm still thinking about Hansu's expression and tears inside his eyes. I can't forget how his innocent, hopeful eyes turned into hopelessness and pain. How great his acting is!

If the actor doesn't get Emmy for this, please scrap the awards this year.

He acts like a evil maybe bcs he is afraid of being weak
yanrudaisy22 April 2022
I cried loudly and my heart been shaken for Koh Hansu. Now I will support this actor, and I finally know why he is that famous. His acting should be used as teaching book for all the other actors to learn. Every breath, and emotions conveyed by his eyes is perfect. Thank you great actor, director and photographer. You are all genius.

like a stand alone movie
knifewind22 April 2022
The trifecta unlocked: acting, directing, and writing are so top-notch. Apple TV has a masterpiece in its library. I now understand why critics raved about this standalone episode. It fully explained the reasons why Hansu is the way he is.

And Actor Lee Min Ho is hands down the actor who caught my attention for good through Pachinko. His duality of expressions within seconds and how he emotes with his eyes, I haven't seen this in other actors in a long time.

Maybe it's time I venture out to other cultures and discover non-white actors and open my horizons.

Hansu back story/young hansu
aanyaraichand22 April 2022
This episode showed us the reason why hansu is cold hearted and ruthless. He just wanted to survive anyhow. He may look evil because he saw with his own eyes what happened to his people and he's afraid of being weak. His desperation of survival tells the story of every individual of that era who went through this crucial time. Lee Min Ho did justice to both young hansu and adult hansu roles. It's truly commendable. And the reason he doesn't want his son to survive. He married mieko because he wanted to survive among those people. But he truly loves sunja and his son noa.

Stand out acting in a stand out episode
habybtisifr22 April 2022
He used to be a wide-eyed lad with so many dreams & hopes.

But life wasn't kind to him. He was forced to survive in a cruel world. You may not love what he has become now but his story deserves to be told.

He is Hansu. And he endured.

And wow the actor they cast as Koh Hansu did such an amazing job making us empathize with the conflicted Hansu's lived experiences. I'm off to hunt other works this actor has done. I read that he is a very famous Kdrama actor. His screen presence is unforgettable.

Most intersting character of pachinko is HANSU. He didn't got any choices like others.
swathisuva22 April 2022
This episode is mind blowing. This is not a story that which man protects and finally gets the main lead. This is the stroy of history. Hansu lost everything in a matter of time. While Other characters has choices in their life but hansu didn't get any option in his life. Leeminho did this character well and professionally This man deserves all the praise. I want to see the rest of the backstory of hansu.

Excellent, educational, emotional
AKSYOC22 April 2022
The Great Kanto Earthquake tragedy is told through the eyes of one of the characters in Pachinko, Koh Hansu. This is not in the book and one of the ways the TV adaptation differs. It doesn't detract from the point of the books story but enhances a compelling characters story and provides new information of atrocities against Koreans that needed to be told. Kogonado and Lee Minho are to be applauded for respectively conveying/portraying so much details, depth and emotion of how the earthquake in one pivotal day changed the course of lives. Excellent, educational, emotional.

Great directing but forcesd side characters back story
albatoolalawishaikh30 April 2023
Great events and historical overview. But, Felt like a filler kind of episode. At the start I thought that just a quick back story to this villainous man. But instead the whole hour was wasted in a back story that did not justify nor add any thing to the plot.

. .

. After the middle it was dragged and I was waiting for the episode to end or at least shift to the main storyline.

. .

. .

After seeing all the 10/10 rating I understood it is a fan service and this is a k drama after all.

. .

.

All the themes was great and was explored in cinematic surreal story telling.

But the perspective from a side character lost my attention and failed to consist with main story.

My favorite episode
Bonniekoh23 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It's now impossible to imagine the story of Pachinko without it. In the six preceding episodes, viewers come to know Hansu as a mysterious merchant with ties to organized crime, but here, Pachinko reveals his surprising past. We meet the younger Hansu, a demure young math tutor planning to build a new life in America, then watch with sickening dread as the earthquake robs him of his future. All in one day, Hansu loses his father, his dreams, and many of his countrymen, who are murdered in cold blood before his very eyes. Tightly focused on Hansu's grief, panic, and disorientation, the episode is a showcase for Lee's immense talents.

Where was the actor in this episode hiding all my life?
sunjak24 April 2022
I not only discovered such a painful history but a whole actor whose performance blew up my expectations of what a good nuanced acting really looks like.

In just 40 minutes, the background of the Japanese army's atrocities during the Great Kanto Earthquake lays out the background of Koh Hansu's life and character formation. An old documentary-style prequel. Lee Min Ho contributed the best acting in the whole drama. A phenomenal actor with a scintillating screen presence who is oh so good to look at. What else does an audience need?

One of TV's Best Episode
amy-9146123 April 2022
Beautifully acted, directed, edited. The episode tells a very powerful and emotional story that relates to the background of one of the most interesting characters in the show and the book (Koh Hansu). This episode was masterfully done. Showcasing a devastating historical event was a creative addition to the show. I applaud the writers, director, actors, and the rest of the team who contributed to this episode.

Lee Minho presented a perfect acting, this episode is too mind blowing
nmtzyv22 April 2022
This is the most memorable part of this masterpiece. It's also great for motivating people who are going through a difficult time right now. Don't get caught up in pain, create your own destiny and start a new life.

The ep7 is all about the story of Hansu played by Lee Min Ho. I have to say that the acting is so good, the performance is delicate and fascinating, and I am immersed in it after watching it.

A Standalone Episode Successfully Done
toridarw24 April 2022
Standalone episodes can either be a success or not. And I can proudly say that Pachinko episode 7 was successfully written, portrayed by the actors and wonderfully directed by one of the best directors, Kogonada. It is so touching to watch and learn about one of the most devastating and impactful event (The Great Kanto Earthquake) that affected Koreans. Not being a Korean, I would still relate to the suffering and pain of natural disasters. I felt every emotion from the actors. I can see this episode being a strong contender in the award season.

I think some people might hesitate to watch because the episode step away from the full story of the show, but again that's the point and definition of a Standalone episode. It's is when writers get creative which I always applaud. This episode is definitely a Must Watch!

Episode is Epic
bluevaru23 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The fact that every scene of this episode of Pachinko will keep you hooked up with it from beginning to end. One single day, changed the life of Koh Hansu just how the guy used to be and what changed him.

He is much stronger now. Hansu is a not hard to understand, for me pachinko has No Villain.

Hansu was just a little boy to face those harsh realities of the world, i wish pray that actor Lee min ho will get more success in future.

The directing is great, everything is so good.

standing ovation for actor Lee Minho, director Kogonada, writers Soo Hugh
Sairose_8624 April 2022
I feel extra thankful to the writers of the show for deciding to have an ep that focused entirely on Hansu's backstory. If it weren't for them, how on earth would we have been able to watch this heartbreaking yet supremely powerful performance Lee Minho.

The way KohHansu's eyes were filled with fear, confusion, and grief in the scene in the crate. He was so alone and afraid. I felt a hundred emotions piercing through the screen.

That is hands down one of the best TV moments of the year.

Great episode of Great Kanto Earthquake
jiwonoc22 April 2022
Well done and acted episode revealing the tragedy of the Great Kanto Earthquake and the backstory of Hansu. My only complaint was that I wish the episode was longer or even explored further over 2 episodes. Ironic that Caucasian Americans were treated with more esteem than the Japanese while Koreans were so horribly oppressed.

The reason behind the cold hearted Hansu well illustrated
dgqhcjzg23 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A young happy, honest and loving Hansu, met with extreme emotional set-backs within a day. This explained why someone who loved his father so much, and yet didn't want to talk more about him later. The heartbreak being beaten by his own father who wanted to disown him to save his life. The scene where the father died right in front of him and seeing all the casualties due to the earthquake. The final one that totally killed his heart was to see his fellows countrymen being burnt alive, and he had to keep silent to save his own life. The diverse personality changes in Hansu was clearly demonstrated, how he has changed to a cold hearted person that people feared. Guess whatever warm that was left in his heart was shown when he met Sunja.

Great Episode
mishtivarus24 April 2022
This episode is marvelous. I didn't except it to be this great. I am happy that the main standalone role of Teenage Koh Hansu is given to a very talented guy.

The fact that he portrayed the role so naturally, i was unable to control my tears...I have a huge respect for him.

The innocence in his eyes, how beautifully he just showed his acting so flawlessly. The episode took me to a great journey i can easily feel how hardly he survived, the eyes with fear grief and pain touched my heart.

I wish all the best to Pachinko and its whole cast.

Very grateful of Lee Min Ho for playing as teen hansu. It's the greatest episode so far. Wonderful ❤

Undoubtedly the BEST episode of 2022 TV series
linjia-8653824 April 2022
Watched PachinkoEp7. A jaw-dropping performance by Lee Min-ho. I didn't like the Hansu character before but after watching Episode 7 I have come to understand that he was a cheerful and bright eyed child but the world made him cold. Lee Minho ate up the screen! His smile, scream, pure, soft, and pain, fear, and loneliness that seem to have been acting his life after meeting his life character. I can't forget his eyes.

I'm astonished
ivyitout24 April 2022
Episode 7 of #Pachinko is a masterpiece of writing, filmmaking, cinematography and acting. I can't even describe Lee Min Ho's outstanding performance here. If this episode was a movie it would be Oscar worthy. I'm still amazed by the actor Lee Minho, he deserves to win an Emmy.
