Earth fails the test
Tweekums26 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
It is time for the annual Pinewood Derby race and Randy is determined that he and Stan are going to win. The race is fairly simple it just involves racing small toy cars made from the official kit; the only rule is 'you must not use anything not in the kit'. Randy breaks this rule by incorporating part of the Large Hadron Collider, which he stole! When the race takes place there car not only speeds pasts the others; it smashes through the wall and flies into outer space at warp speed! Nobody suspects cheating! Soon a communication is received from space; everybody thinks the discovery of warp technology must mean aliens are about to invite Earth to join an Intergalactic Federation of Planets. When contact is made it is somewhat different though; it would appear the alien who found the car is a criminal who wants his warp drive fixed so he can evade the space police. When the police turn up they deny meeting the first alien; first out of fear then; after Stan kills the alien and they find his space money; out of greed. Nations argue about the money but are determined that they won't give it back.

While this isn't a classic episode it does have plenty of laughs; the fact that Randy would go to such ridiculous lengths to win the race but wouldn't confess to cheating even after an alien appears was pretty funny as was the fact that nobody wondered why a standard toy car blasted off into space! I'm not sure why the arrival of the aliens was considered 'first contact' as there have been different aliens in the show before... I don't think one can worry too much about continuity in 'South Park' though after all the same character used to die in every episode in early seasons! The end featured a nice twist that I hadn't been expecting which was good. Whether or not you like this is likely to be down to whether you find Randy Marsh hilarious or annoying; the former group should love it the latter won't.

Good Episode

Pinewood Derby is the newest episode of Season 13 of South Park. This one features a plot involving aliens such as in the episodes "Cancelled" and "Cartman Gets An Anal Probe".What happens is, the pinewood derby toy car race is coming up and Randy really wants to win. They are supposed to use the tools in the kit they are given, but Randy cheats and uses this small orb that makes the car go super fast. The car ends up making a rip in the space time continum, then an alien thief comes and asks Stan & Randy to build the same car for him. They do not want to tell him how they really built it, because they would lose their trophy if they did. They end up killing the alien and taking his space cash, however instead of alerting the space police, they keep it to themselves. This episode was pretty good, not the best of the season and not the worst. There is only one more episode of the first half of this season before Trey and Matt go on break for a while.Hopefully it will be awesome!

Warning: Spoilers
The first run of Season 13 ends next Wednesday so next Wednesday it will end one of the finest South Park runs ever. I'm not one of those that just criticize everything from like Season 10 and that like the current Season. With very few exceptions every South Park episode from Season 9 to 12 (though I have yet to see the entire first run of Season 12, I really want the Blu-ray set!) is just brilliant in my book, not to mention how brilliant are also the rest of the Seasons.

Anyway, "Pinewood Derby" is a bizarre, clever, well just another true winner episode that you really should check out. The episode announcement of last Sunday said: "Building a Pinewood Derby car is the opportunity for some good old fashioned father-son bonding time in an all-new episode of South Park titled Pinewood Derby". Pretty much I wasn't waiting what I get which is great since I ended loving it, we certainly have the father-son stuff, is Randy teaching Stan how to lie, is just the pinewood derby, the derby in which Stan has always lose but this time it will happen something different, something that of course will bring consequences but actually it will bring much more consequences than the ones Randy and Stan could imagine, unimaginable consequences.

Is just great since Randy's attitude will be the same attitude of well the entire world, lies everywhere all around the world! The crazy stuff of this episode begins when Randy puts a superconducting magnet to Stan's car, damn the car leaves the Earth! Consequences? Well, of course, Randy will finally enjoy the triumph at the pinewood derby, there's going to be a suicide, Stan will feel guilt, Mexico will built many hospitals and waterparks, Finland will be completely destroyed. All that just because randy and Stan cheated in the derby? Well, yes! The ending is just brilliant, only a kid was capable of say the truth, of say the truth knowing that he made something wrong, he was brave enough to do that but unfortunately he was the only one in the world, neither of Randy, the rest of the civilians, Nicolas Sarkozy, Felipe Calderon, Luiz Inacio Lula de Siva and the rest of the leaders were capable of doing what Stan did. Great episode!

Genius!
sondremaraak27 April 2012
This episode disses our monetary system and the behavior created by it. South Park is a genius show if you understand the underlying message.

The episode also explains the Fermi-paradox in a different way. Why should the aliens be interested in visiting the earth if we don't have anything to offer?

Please, check out the The Venus Project. The Venus Project is a futuristic model of a resource based society. I look a it as a aim - a society we can be inspired by. I think most of Jacque Fresco's thoughts about the future are correct (as they can be).

We ain't civilized yet - if we don't change out values we will have a relatively short stay on mother earth.

South Park goes global
shonenpunk27 January 2016
This episode follows South Park story structures but in a global level. It's an episode for those who love the show but might find hard to relate to some of their cultural references which are inside jokes for Americans. This time you might find a reference about your country, too :)

In a funny but deep episode about life in outer space, Randy Marsh, a typical dumb American, manages to get all the world leaders together in a sticky situation, where we see what we all truly are in this world: typical dumb people.

And isn't it true? We're just a bunch of stupid nations bombing each other for political interests and a bunch of piece of paper. Maybe before try to create new relations beyond Earth, we should worry about fixing the ones we have in here already.

Come on, guys. Let's make a better world for we all! <3 (or let's just bomb Finland, whatever)

A giant, brilliant metaphor.
Duelly25 May 2009
This episode was amazing. If you are into the subject of alien life, then you may have already heard of the "Galactic Federation of Planets." Trey Parker uses the metaphor of The Pinewood Derby, and the "approved kit" to hit on the subject of alien influence in our own technology. If you believe in recovered UFO's (which I do, and clearly Trey does) then it is not far fetched to believe we have reverse-engineered alien technology for our own advancements. However, we did not discover this technology on our own, therefore.. "we did not use what was in the approved kit." And we have no right to join the Galactic Federation of Planets. We have been visited... but, to what extent.. remains to be seen.

Decent
protestant_dan26 November 2020
Writing this just seeing that all the reviews are plenty years old, This episode is solid. I did cub scout races myself as a kid, and it was definitely fun watching Trey and Matt play on the topic. But the episode pretty quickly turns to the absurd. I think the final twist at the end saves it enough to be enjoyable, but it's definitely not golden-age South Park. Worth the watch!

good idea, but could be better executed
gabriel_antonio20076 November 2021
I get the idea of criticizing the nations and stuff, but i didnt really laugh that much.

This is probably the first episode where Randy is the main character, and while i like the character, i not a fan of that.
