On April 4, Deadline shared a first look at Prime Video‘s new YA street racing series Motorheads, which will premiere on May 20. The streamer ordered the "coming of age" series in November 2023 and announced the main cast.

Audiences will follow a group of outsider teens who bond over their love for adrenaline and speed from automobiles as they try to overcome the aches and pains of growing up. The series sounds similar to a mix between The Outsiders, Outer Banks, and Grease in the best possible ways: budding teen romance, a found family friend group, and adventures that will last a lifetime.

Deadline shared the series' synopsis, from writer-showrunner John A. Norris:

"Motorheads is about first love, first heartbreak, and turning the key in your very first car. Set in a once-thriving rust-belt town that’s now searching for a glimmer of hope, the series is the adrenaline-filled story...

When Netflix announced it was releasing new seasons of The Night Agent and The Recuit within a week of one another, fans were understandably puzzled and concerned by the decision. Netflix’s recent shot at taking the Yellowstone crown with its Australian neo-western series Territory has come to an end after only one season. Australian outlets and C21 Media report today that the show has been canceled and will not be returning for a second season.

Released on Netflix globally in late October 2024, the big Australian epic set in the outback sees rival factions all vying for control of the Lawson cattle station, which is now leaderless and without an heir to inherit it. It scored positive reviews from audiences and critics, although it didn’t hit it big in the Netflix top 10s, as we’ll come onto in a second.

Anna Torv led the cast, playing Emily Lawson alongside Robert Taylor, Michael Dorman, Sam Corlett, and Philippa Northeast. The series was created by Timothy Lee and Ben Davies with Easy Tiger Productions and Ronde Media producing.

Exclusive: BBC Studios has revealed how much it paid to bolster its international production footprint earlier this year with the acquisitions of Australia’s Werner Film Productions and Spain’s Brutal Media.

BBC Studios paid an initial consideration of Aud$6M ($4M) for 100% of Werner, the company behind Australian hit drama series The Newsreader. It spent €5M ($5.5M) for complete control of Brutal, which made Netflix horror feature Killer Book Club.

BBC Studios completed the acquisitions in April, but did not declare how much it paid for the companies. The figures were disclosed this week in BBC Commercial earnings filed at Companies House.

BBC Studios Productions Australia has acquired Melbourne, Australia-based Werner Film Productions, the production firm behind such drama series as The Newsreader, which airs on Australian broadcaster ABC and the BBC, and Netflix’s Surviving Summer.

BBC Studios has acquired Werner Film Productions, the company behind Australian drama hit The Newsreader.

BBC Studios Productions Australia paid an undisclosed amount for Warner, marking the latest in several high-profile deals for the BBC’s commercial division. Last month, it paid £255M ($325M) for ITV’s share in their streamer, BritBox International.

The Werner deal is billed as “a significant investment” in Australia’s production ecosystem, and comes soon after BBC Studios CEO Tom Fussell confirmed the BBC company was raising its debt facility to £600M as it seeks to invest in new business and double its size by 2027/28.

Werner is best known making ABC drama series The Newsreader, which stars Anna Torv and Sam Reid as an embattled anchorwoman and an ambitious reporter who confront studio politics and their own issues during the 1980s, in association with eOne. The series has won multiple Logies and Aacta awards and season three is currently filming.

The live action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s manga, which scored an early Season 2 renewal at the streamer, has logged an additional 10 million views this week, according to a release Tuesday. Its impressive viewership builds on its first week atop the list, when it debuted to the with 18.5 million views. The series then drew another 19.3 million views in its second week.

Like last week, the fifth installment of “Virgin River” was next on the list in the No. 2 spot with 9.6 million views, and limited thriller series “Who Is Erin Carter?” maintained its third place on the list with 3.8 million views. U.K. comedy “Top Boy” also held onto the No. 4 spot...

Today, it’s not so rare to see young adults with anxiety on our screens. What earlier would be considered taboo or something to be ashamed of is now spoken about more openly and represented positively on TV. Surviving Summer is just an Australian remix of American teen dramas, but somehow, even in its 30-minute episodes, it manages to cover a lot of ground. Given that each episode is mostly about beautiful visions of surfing and the ocean, you’d think that’s all the show is about. But it brings to the table a lot of problems teens face today. The Australian show Surviving Summer is a wildcard entry for teen shows on Ott platforms. Not only has it got a fabulous cast that people can fall in love with, as is common with this kind of thing, but it also boasts some fantastic shots of the sea and the sport of surfing. It’s not like Surviving Summer brings anything new to the table in terms of teen drama and rebellious “not like other girls” characters, but it’s the surfing that really ties this show together to make it smooth sailing.

The Australian teen drama Surviving Summer is returning to our screens on the 15th of September. The show is much more about the magic of surfing than melodrama, and that’s what makes it a perfectly bingeable show about some easy-going kids Down Under just having the time of their lives. Netflix has announced four new productions as it ramps up its Australia originals slate, including movie Love Is In The Air, starring Delta Goodrem as a seaplane pilot falling for the man sent to sink her business.

In her film debut, newcomer Sophie Wilde portrays Mia, a woman who has recently lost her mom. At a party, Mia plays a game where she must touch an embalmed hand and speak the words "talk to me" to allow a spirit to enter her body. The “Stranger Things 4” buzz doesn’t appear to be dying down any time soon.

The fourth season has now become Netflix’s most-watched English language series ever with 781.04 million hours viewed. It’s also the fastest a TV season has ever accomplished such a feat.

In its third week since release, “Stranger Things 4” Volume 1 raked in another 159.24 million hours, once again making it Netflix’s top-viewed series of the week.

In fact, the entire “Stranger Things” library filled the top four spots on the Netflix Top 10 list for the week of June 6 – June 12. Second on the list was “Stranger Things 2” with 52.42 million hours viewed. The O.G. season of “Stranger Things” was third with 50.3 million hours viewed. Season 3 came in fourth with 47.6 million hours.

It was yet another record-breaking week for Season 4 of “Stranger Things,” which has become Netflix’s most popular season of an English-language television series ever.

Netflix’s list of most popular titles is calculated based on viewership during a title’s first 28 days of availability, and “Stranger Things” Season 4 has been viewed for 781 million hours since its May 27 debut, breaking the record previously held by the second season of “Bridgerton.” Along with being the most popular among English-language title, it’s the second most popular Netflix series overall, second only to the 2021 South Korean drama “Squid Game.”

Though “Stranger Things” undoubtedly continues to succeed, its single-week viewing is beginning to decrease. Last week, the season set the record for most-viewed English-language show in a week with 335 million hours viewed, and according to Netflix’s newly released Top 10 rankings, that number fell to 159.2 million hours during the June 6-12 viewing window.

While Netflix audiences showed up in huge numbers for volume 1 of Stranger Things season 4, the streaming service has another teen show that's very different but equally gripping. Surviving Summer centers on the world of competitive surfing amongst teens in Australia, and while the main characters don't fight monsters, its setting of Shorehaven, Victoria is every bit as important to the show as Hawkins is to Stranger Things.

The competitive spirit might get the better of some Surviving Summer characters, but the series proves that friendships don't have to suffer under the weight of competition. With its diverse group of teens, there are a lot of likable members of the main cast.

A new month has arrived, which means a fresh batch of movies and TV shows streaming on Netflix. While many are no doubt still making their way through “Stranger Things” Season 4, June brings the arrival of a new season of another beloved Netflix series: “The Umbrella Academy.” The third season of the semi-superhero show premieres June 22 and finds the gang stranded in a timeline where the Umbrella Academy does not exist, while battling not only a rival team but also plenty of timeline-altering shenanigans.

In terms of new Netflix original films, June 17 sees the debut of “Spiderhead,” a psychological thriller starring Chris Hemsworth, Miles Teller and Jurnee Smollett and directed by “Top Gun: Maverick” filmmaker Joseph Kosinski.

June will also see the debut of the new Adam Sandler-fronted basketball inspirational drama film “Hustle” on June 8, while a litany of comedy specials from the likes of Pete Davidson and Amy Schumer...

Just one month after debuting a fan favorite genre hit in the form of Stranger Things season 4, Netflix is once again coming out with the big guns for its list of new releases for June 2022.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 is set to be released June 22 and it will be a busy one for the Hargreeves family of crime fighters. After averting a 1963 nuclear apocalypse in season 2, the gang returns to the present only to find there’s a new team called the Sparrows living in their house. Based on the trailer for season 3, hilarity and many superpowers punches thrown will ensue.
