More Mutant Vampires, less everything else

Warning: Spoilers
So.......thanks to TUBI's recommendation, I watched this film. I enjoy a good low budget film but come on man, this was so lame.

The Danny McBride douche bag is so unlikable, honestly pretty much everyone is annoying. The best part of the movie was the beginning, until the boyfriend gets killed, unfortunately there were an additional 118 minutes or so left.

2/3 of the film was just annoying dialog about getting drunk, high or having sex.

Velocipastor is an excellent example of schlock done right, the story was good, acting/directing was good, etc. Mutant Vampires from Planet Neptune is none of that. ...speaking a the Title, were there actually more than one Vampire? Inquiring minds want to know, not really but whatever.

I give it two Stars because someone put in the work to write, direct, act and produce this film. So many better options.

Warning: Spoilers
If you go into this expecting gore, blood, violence, or gratuitous nudity you will be disappointed.

If you go into this expecting a light, fun film without anything too over the top you should enjoy yourself. This is a comedic horror film.

The characters are well cast and have good chemistry together.

The setting is used well. Luke Nelson is a believable oafish comical best friend, Buzz. Alex Onda's Yuri works as the straight man with slightly wounded puppy dog, yearning romantic. Chelsea Falbo and Jax Kellington are paired well as best friends, Cass and Starr. Julene Fontaine's Larissa is a solid fifth wheel and killjoy.

The mutant vampire looks great. The design on the vampire is a standout in the film.

Director McCarthy capitalizes on the woods and really sets the scene quite well with them.

There are a couple shots that really standout to me as well.

There's the shot where Larissa is leaving the cabin at night and the way that the cabin is lit is just very cool. It's a wide shot and from left to right the lighting goes from like a blue to a purple, but in the center beneath the entry way is an overhead light and it comes across as inspired by like giallo or Guillermo del Toro, and it works. It gives off kind of a haunted house attraction feel, which I like.

The other shot is when Larissa encounters the vampire, the way that the vampire fades into view from behind is very cool.

This is a nice homage to horror from the 50's and 60's, but with a little more violence and a lot more drug use. But still, overall it is not a very violent film.

The kills are executed well even if overall they aren't spectacular. They smack of a filmmaker who knows that their budget and ability to make a good looking kill is currently at a certain level, so rather than overreach and wind up with a bad looking over the top kill they chose to go with a well executed average kill.

Overall this is a fairly fun film. It comes across as a film that the director had a lot of fun with, and probably the cast did as well. My only real critiques are that the joints they rolled were really thin, and the finale was a little anti-climatic, but that's a risk one takes as an indie filmmaker because there's only so much risk you can take on to do a larger scale finale. I recommend watching this, it's streaming free on Tubi.

A fine indie-genre feature
kannibalcorpsegrinder20 October 2023
Preparing for a camping trip, a group of friends decide to visit the local cabin in the woods owned by a friend out in the wilderness for a weekend of partying, but when they start disappearing find the area crashed by a race of extraterrestrial vampires looking to feed on humans.

Overall, this one wasn't all that bad. Among the better features here is the generally decent setup to get all the storylines going and feature all the characters out into the woods. The early setup involving the friends coming together to party with their supplies and travel out into the woods provides the chance to get to know the dynamic between everyone is a fun way to get this going. Alongside this are the exploits of the aliens' craft in the area as a meteorite offering a neat explanation to provide its presence in the area for a fine storyline. As well, there are also the somewhat goofy and cheesy creature attacks. A fun encounter at the beginning where the vampires attack the hiking couple in the tent comes off rather nicely, much like the later ambushes on the helpful hikers that are pretty cheesy. That sets up the finale where the surprise attacks on the stragglers leaving the house to hike in the woods setting up the cheesy enough brawls and encounters around the cabin while putting more alien screentime and gore into the mix. These end up being the good points present here although there are some drawbacks here. What really holds this back the most is the dragging pace which holds the attacks to a bare minimum of encounters. This one has way too much padding here featuring scenes solely designed to pad out the running time with lame montage smoking weed scenes, eternal travelog scenes of the group driving or hiking through the woods, or long-winded dance parties. As these scenes hold up the action to brief sports, it causes an obviously enhanced and unbalanced running time due to the padding featured. The other issue here comes from the aforementioned cheese which makes for an obvious series of low-budget setbacks. There's never any doubt about the rubber masks and Halloween costumes used for the aliens which makes them look somewhat goofy, much like the rest of the gore, prosthetics that give themselves away. Combined with the presentation of this one obviously taking place in cheap locales with the guerilla-style presentation, these all manage to bring this one down.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence, Graphic Language, Nudity, and drug use.

I'm giving it a 10 for the laughs.

I don't think this film was intended to be funny but it really worked well. Probably the edibles to but sheesh, so good laughs in here. Thee storyline really made it for me. Being a huge fan of horror films, I might come off as a little biased, but in a nutshell, this film takes the horror genre to the next level and on the right path not relying on cheesy jump scares And quick camera pops this movie allows you to use your imagination and keeps you glued to the seat the entire time But once again, it could of been those edibles I had. Anyways, check this out and enjoy the laughs, I just might watch it again.

Low Budget Good Time

I watched Mutant Vampires From The Planet Neptune on Tubi, free w/ ads.

This is another cheap horror film from Calvin Morie McCarthy. Higher production values than Jesus, I Was Evil.

5 friends go out to party in a cabin in the woods, and party they do. But a Mutant Vampire alien has other ideas.

The core cast does a great job. You can really feel the bonding.

I really like the mask/costume of the Mutant Vampire. It's so cool.

There's also a really great drone tracking shot that works really well. And I liked the Mutant Vision thing.

Several of the cast did get topless in this.

This was a good time.

The other vampire(s)
kosmasp10 August 2022
I reckon I have been used to "normal" looking vampires, so I was taken aback when I first saw this vampire/alien thing (no pun intended). My blood did not freeze though (I do wonder what that would do to a vampire while we're on that subject) - generally speaking there are a few things that you should not expect to see here. Foremost nudity and blood - this is more of a horror comedy with the emphasis on the characters that are in the movie.

What you can and should expect is a low budget movie with a decent monster suit and some neat effects containing violence. So having a heart and some love for b-movies (or c?) is almost something that should be there as a given.

Chelsey Falbo is playing one of the main characters and you are excused if you are enamoured by her beauty. I actually thought I had seen her in something before that, but I was mistaken. The movie having her is a big plus for me - and again talking about her face more than anything, since there is virtually no nudity in this. You may disagree of course. But hopefully the other characters and the weird comedy help for you to enjoy watching this ... just do not expect too much and anything this will not deliver ... maybe the title is one of the best things this has (besides Chelsey that is)

Needs an editor. Deserves to be a better paced film.
Opinate24 October 2023
Full disclosure: I did not finish this film because I don't have the time to sit through all the overlong dialogue and dolly shots to get to the next good bit. But if you don't mind a bit of lull I urge you to check out this otherwise super fun indy movie. It has lots of laughs and some good character (the autistic sister is really good) and some originality. I just wish someone would do an edit on it so it would become the well-paced, fun-packed film it deserves to be. I would not feel like my money was wasted on a shorter more concise film.

But overall good effort and above all, fun content!

The Soundtrack Was Really Great.
icocleric9 February 2024
I thought this film was fun, but did have pacing problems. So better editing would have turned this from an okay but fun film, into a really great film. The sound track was really great, spot on actually. I thought it captured a retro B-Movie feeling really nicely.

The creature design was cool. And the acting was good, with the relationship between the friends seeming pretty good and real. The lines didn't feel stiff or awkwards. There were some great one liners in there too.

It did have some horror comedy moments, but I think it didn't quite go far enough with the horrot comedy. That would have really turned this film into something amazing.
