Korean film "New Year Blues", 4 different love stories that are related to each other
satriaadhika1 July 2021
New Year is synonymous with festive and fun celebrations. But what happens if 5 days before the new year your girlfriend suddenly decides, takes her wedding money, or suddenly gets divorced? Surely this will make the end of your year not as pleasant as you think.

What's interesting in this film is how each character can solve their problems before the new year arrives. The conflicts that exist with 4 different stories make the atmosphere in this film diverse, ranging from happy, sad, baper, and others.

Even so, this film is still interesting to watch even though it's not in the new year. Because the new year is only a decoration in this film. This film focuses on the love conflict of each partner who has different characteristics and problems.

Ji-Ho (Kim Kang-Woo) used to work as a detective in a serious crime squad. He was demoted and worked in the general civil service office. Hyo-Young (Yoo In-Na) is a rehabilitation coach. She is in the process of divorcing. He went to the civil service office to request a restraining order. Ji-Ho happens to keep Hyo-Young away from her husband.

Because Ji-Ho looks after Hyo-Young, he starts to feel comfortable and comforted. Because he has been busy blaming himself for the divorce he did a few years ago. Meanwhile, Hyo-Young herself seems to be getting comfortable with Ji-Ho.

Jae-Hun (Yoo Yeon-Seok) suffers from exhaustion. He went to Argentina and now works as a wine delivery man. He happens to meet Jin-A (Lee Yeon-Hee). He was dumped by his girlfriend for no reason. His ex's travel savings were taken in half and he decided to calm himself down by going all the way to Argentina.

Jae-Hun becomes Jin-A's guide in Argentina. Unknowingly, they managed to heal their respective wounds.

Yong-Chan (Lee Dong-Hwi) runs a travel agency. He is about to marry Yaolin (Chen Duling), a Chinese, but he has a big problem. He was conned for money for his wedding. Yaolin was assigned to the Korea branch, prior to their marriage. Yong-Chan's older sister, Yong-Mi (Yum Hye-Ran) is uncomfortable with Yong-Chan marrying a foreigner.

Rae-Hwan (Yoo Teo) is a national team player in the Paralympics. He always feels sorry for his girlfriend O-Wol (Sooyoung), who faces people's prejudices because of him. Whereas Rae Hwan has a broken leg on the right and uses a prosthetic leg, it makes him feel small in front of O-Wol.

From the 4 different love stories, they are still related to each other. Hyo-Young is Rae-Hwan's virgin and O-Wol is a friend of her brother Yong-Chan. Yong-Chan himself reports his fraud case to Ji-Ho. So, the audience will not be confused because the characters will be interrelated.

The interesting thing in this film is also when the characters are in different places. We can see how Ji-Ho works at the police station, while Rae-Hwan is one of the skaters, Yong-Chan who works at a travel agency, and Yaolin who is from China. With their different work backgrounds, this film becomes more complex and more interesting to follow.

No less interesting was when Jin-A went to Argentina. The author himself doesn't know if he really went to Argentina or just CGI effects like Vincenzo. However, the author himself feels that he really shot in Argentina so that the atmosphere and culture of Argentina is very close in this film

The thing that should be appreciated in this film is when the director and screenwriter were able to make 4 love stories in this film in detail and not in a hurry. There are many romance films out there that only carry one story but seem rushed. The audience can understand the core problem of this film clearly, and the conflict resolution at the end will make the audience feel the emotion and warmth that is presented in the film.

There is no doubt about the cinematography that is displayed. The beauty of Korea and the country of Argentina can be described well and tastes sweet. The acting of the players such as Yoo Tae O, Lee Yon-Hee, Yoo Yeon-sok, and others were able to bring the characters to life well and make the atmosphere in this film feel emotional.

Korean songs and music featured in this film also add to the warmth and excitement of this film.

Indirectly, this film teaches many things about acceptance, love, courage, career, and others. Unlike most films that include poetic words, this film actually conveys its message implicitly and does not seem patronizing.

That every conflict that occurs in a romantic relationship must be faced wisely. That sometimes, conflicts make our relationship even closer. When there is a problem, try to spend time with yourself and go somewhere, it can calm you down and make you more relieved.

Overall, with a duration of 114 minutes, this film is able to convey its message well. The acting of the players who are immersed in the role, plus soothing songs and cinemathography, is able to make the audience feel at home to sit for 2 hours while watching the film.

This film is suitable to be watched with a partner or loved ones. If you want to try watching a different love story, you must watch this film!

The Argentina part was the best

At first it is confusing sorting out the different couples. Later things come together. The stalker part wasn't that interesting. Then there was the Chinese bride and the lost in translation thing. The best was the couple in Argentina. Could have been a series on its own like The Package - same actress. The international element is nice.

OK but each segment felt a bit hastily put together.

Mildly entertaining, largely boring

A cute, edge-less, shallow romcom, which is a nice brain turn-off once in a while. All heteros with basic hot girl problems just to be saved by their hot prince is just no longer an interesting concept.
