Steve Martin met his ex-wife Victoria Tennant in a similar way that he met Jan. He would practice his banjo playing, and Victoria was a neighbor of his who would enjoy listening to him not knowing that it was, in fact, Steve Martin.
First appearance of Amy Ryan as Jan, although her name appears in the credits of the two previous episodes.
When reminiscing about 'Splash: The Musical,' Oliver says he put his own money in the show. In both the Broadway and movie versions of the musical 'The Producers,' Max Bialystok (Nathan Lane, who plays Teddy in this series) says that the two cardinal rules of producing are, 1, never put your own money in the show and, 2, NEVER PUT YOUR OWN MONEY IN THE SHOW!!!
Oliver's 2005 flop "Splash! The Musical" is a pastiche of the injury-plagued 2010 Broadway show "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark".
When Oliver is telling Charles about what happened with "Splash! The Musical," you can vaguely hear the mermen singing, "Make a splash! Make a splash!" The tune is very remiscent of "Make 'Em Laugh" from "Singin' in the Rain." Oliver mentioned this musical in the opening stinger while describing his vision to Teddy.
