Röckët Stähr's Death of a Rockstar

This is easily the greatest animated rock opera ever created. Granted, it's probably the only animated rock opera ever created. Nevertheless, it's fantastic. The story and animation are captivating and the music is absolutely fantastic.

I didn't know what to expect from an animated rock opera, but this movie really delivered on every level. The animation and colors had a groovy 70s quality, as did the music. And in the best possible way, very David Bowie/Aerosmith vibes with a dose of Andrew Lloyd Webber thrown in. There were some scenes and visuals that were laugh-out-loud funny, too. But it was more than just great music and laughs, the plot had an awesome theme about freedom, which totally goes hand in hand with rock n roll.

Maybe you've seen ads for this here on social media. Rocket Stähr's Death of a Rockstar is ambitious. The music is incredible. Look it up on Spotify, you won't be disappointed (if you like 70's hard rock). The guy wrote and recorded the music. Then spent 8 years animating it with no animation experience. I admire that greatly. This whole thing is really really good. It's not Pixar, but it's not trying to be. The story is very easy to follow, the music moves the film along, and the characters are really well developed. I am totally on board for the DIY attitude of this, so check it out if you can. If nothing else, it's enjoyable and the music rocks. 9/10 must check out.

Röckët Stähr is a one-man wonder. He wrote the screenplay, composed and performed the music, provided almost all the voices (the female was the exception), and did all the animation himself.

A story of going against the odds, finding true love, and subverting the system, with a soundtrack that will have you rocking out.

Comparisons to "Yellow Submarine" have been made about this film, and they are appropriate. A fusion of color and sound that will leave you wanting for more.

Animation wise, it reminds me of the 1960s-1970s era of underground comic books, with heavy references to Zap Comix.

The music? Straightforward Rock, with hints of Bowie, T-Rex, and the Rolling Stones. The kick-ass style of Rock that I feared was lost forever. And yes, this is a true Rock opera! Everything is sung!

In short, if you think today's Rock and Roll needs a jump start, this is what you're looking for.

Like many people, I saw ads for this on social media like crazy. Over time I found myself listening through the songs and hearing Rocket's story of the creation of this film. I decided it was worth the money to support the art and whether or not I would enjoy the movie was a non-issue because I liked a few of the songs I'd heard with enough to feel it was worth the buy. I got the movie 8 months before I finally decided to watch it with some friends.

We. Were. Enthralled.

Every song is great. The animation is charming in its own way. The story is excellent, and keeps you guessing as it goes on as to how it will all unfold. Seeds are planted early that pay off really well later on. Plenty of twists and turns and easter eggs and just fun raunchy humor that had us all laughing through the whole thing. It all comes full circle in the end that just leaves you feeling really good after the whole thing.

The only thing that stopped us from immediately watching it again with commentary is that it was super late. We were completely floored by how good it was and I'm excited to show it to more friends and family.
