Based in the Pilot
marymcfarland-0186617 August 2021
I liked this. I'm not understanding the "1" reviews. I watched the original as a kid in the 70s. It was always a program that addressed what you think your fantasy is, might not actually be your fantasy. Both then and now, this show required some huge suspension of disbelief. I think the reboot captured all of that. I like the reference at the very beginning to the forever awesome Ricardo Montalban. The newscaster story was a bit disjointed, because of editing or something...I don't know. Anyway, I like the casting, the scenery, and the overall feel. It's worth a watch.

All focuses on women
pearson199420 June 2022
Someone commented in the reviews that this series is catered to women. Well I watched 6 episodes so far and yes, it is definitely all women. Men are props and women are all the focus. Not very much diversity since they all cater towards diversity.

Updated 21st century version of the popular TV show from the 1980's
ryan-l-leong11 August 2021
The plot of Fantasy Island has been updated with Roslyn Sanchez playing the role of Elena Roarke, the grand niece of Mr. Rourke and she has an assistant named Ruby.

Same storylines but the main difference is a big budget which the classic show didn't have. The new show is filmed in Puerto Rico.

Ms. Sanchez is very attractive and FOX is known for eye candy so there's that. Nothing can replace the original series but I'm sure this new one looks great in HD and hopefully this show rekindles interest in the original. It has for me, and I for one enjoy watching the reruns with Ricardo Montalban!

A bit dull and boring
catfanatic88810 September 2021
I wanted to like this so much but I just can't. The cast is very talented and attractive but the storylines are mostly boring and stilted. I've watched every episode so much but only one or two stories really moved me! I hope they improve the storytelling soon or I'm afraid this show may be canceled.

My own fantasies have changed over the past 44 years since Fantasy Island was first aired in 1977. I am enjoying this new TV version.
Ed-Shullivan11 August 2021
As Roselyn Sanchez states "Most people don't understand there is a difference between a fantasy and a miracle." Some of the other IMDB reviewers are obviously looking for a miracle, or simply just miss the 1977 TV version with Tattoo's (Hervé Villechaize) famous line "Boss 'da plane, 'da plane!"

I for one liked the refreshing upgrade to the Fantasy Island theme having the beautiful and very classy Roselyn Sanchez as the islands new host, and mini Tattoo has been replaced by a Golden Retriever dog named Mr. Jones. Roselyn plays Elena Roarke, and very quickly she pays homage to her Great Uncle, Ricardo Montalban, before we get to greet the islands first three guests.

I am a senior citizen now, and yes, I watched the original 1977 TV series regularly, but I also realize time passes us all by and as such with the passing of 44 years since this TV series was first aired, we all have memories. Some good memories, and some not so good memories that we sometimes reflect back and wish we could go back to a simpler time.

I think the producers have properly upgraded this new version, and Roselyn Sanchez makes the perfect new host. I look forward to being a regular weekly viewer.

I give this revamped Fantasy Island TV series a solid 8 out of 10 IMDB rating.

It's okay - but could be better
miladymargot6 September 2021
I find it interesting that everyone has forgotten about the re-boot made with Malcolm McDowell as Roarke. IT was a darker, more sarcastic take on the whole fantasy fullfilling issue - which maybe this re-make could make use of. The acting is fine. I like Roselyn Sanchez as Ms. Roarke and her assistant Ruby is also interesting as she gets familiar with this magical place. But it's just so - nice. Sweet. A bit too much sweet - not enough of a punch in the gut like some of the episodes with McDowell. I loved Ricardo Montalban and was a devoted viewer of the original and equally so the McDowell version. This one - it's so far a maybe on my list of must watch series.

writing is HORRIBLE
redinnevada2 September 2021
I've watched every episode. I WANT to love or at least like this show. I like the actors in it. All of them. The scenery is beautiful. The "fantasies" are interesting if a bit wacky, but even that's ok since it's supposed to be a bit fanciful. All those ingredients are the right ones.

But the WRITING. The actual LINES. What they have to say and then how it's presented is HORRIBLE. It's stupid most of the time. It's soooo dumbed down it's too much to overlook. It's PAINFUL hearing the stupid writing coming out of their mouths. The show could be interesting and they chose the stupidest possible writing available.

I'll wait for another reboot where they get actual WRITERS who an write.

Don't believe the haters
sholdenradio12 August 2021
Give this reboot a fair shake. If you want to see another snarky cruel show, this isn't for you. There's heart here, and an underlying kindness that speaks to the original. There's magic and a chance to see people confront and handle their problems. And beautiful scenery as a bonus. I look forward to seeing the show grow into itself and into our hearts as the original did.

Not like the original

Warning: Spoilers
I agree with some of the reviews ive been reading.

I like the GORGEOUS colorful ISLAND, thats a fantasy itself!

I don't like that there's no Tatoo. If there's going to be a recreation, the writers should at least stick to some of the storylines with a twist.

I don't like that a wife leaves her husband. The writers are saying its ok to leave your spouse just because they have health issues and the spouse has to go home and lie to other family members that his spouse has past away but is still alive. So what happens other family members comes for a fantasy and see her at Fantasy Island? I know its only a storyline but this leaves views thinking.... I couldn't get past the first 5 min of the 2nd show and the 3rd show was not worth watching. Not sure if I'd give this another try or not. The only Fantasy about this tropical Island is that i want to visit this beautiful island.

It's definitely not like the original Fantasy Island.

Ruby is the weak link
moorsare14 September 2021
Show is entertaining. But Ruby needs to go! That fake southern accent is the worst.

Sorry - Doesn't Work for Me
doug2go16 September 2021
I was looking forward to the re boot - don't have a problem with shows the second time around and updated , Hawaii 5-0 was great , Magnum was great until the Doctor showed and ruined the show for me - but that isn't the reboot problem that is just brain dead writers and show runners, Fantasy island needed better more exciting stories , too much human interest stuff and family intrigues. It become mind numbingly boring after about 3 shows - if there was anything on TV I would have self cancelled but finally had enough after 15 minutes of the second to last show - I like Roselyn Sanchez but she is obviously mis cast in this roll and her side kick is an unnecessary 3rd wheel - in short they have made a mess of a great concept .

Love this show
sherriwilkins-9812722 August 2021
I kept wishing that they would make a new Fantasy Island. I remember watching the original when I was growing up. I love this new show. The acting is so believable and I love the stories. I'm so excited to see the upcoming episodes. Finally, something different to watch. Yay.

Clichéd Warning: Spoilers
I like this series up to a point. Up to a point it's funny, entertaining and poignant, and the setting is breathtakingly beautiful. However, the stopping point of admiration for me, which knocks off four stars, is the clichéd use of lesbian relationships. Why does every writer these days think that they have to turn even apparently heterosexual people into lesbians, or in some cases gay men? A few episodes in I feel as if I am watching the lesbian chronicles at times and it is spoiling a good show. I am 76 and have had two gay friends and five gay acquaintances in the whole of that time. Of course, people don't have to hide their preferences in fear and shame these days, which is a good thing, but it is so, so annoying to have the gay agenda pushed into your face in almost every single film or series on TV these days. You know that old saying that the English kitchen has three taps, hot. Cold and custard? Well this theme is like the custard tap, unimaginative cuisine.

Great revival but more a show for a women
grlym-4684915 September 2021
The show is cute and charming

However, the 99% female cast and female only plot lines does make me start to think my interest in the show will wane.

I'm only up to episode 6 in season 1. Hopefully, the show finds balance.

All this doesn't mean the show is bad. Just means it's more about women (guys are just props to propel a woman's line or plot line. Or more women specific interest items) and I may not be the target audience. So including guys was never the point.

Bad, bad, bad, Oh my!
brooklygirl12 August 2021
I watched episode 1 after my brother informed me of the new TV series. We are both in our 50s and remember the original series with Ricardo Montalbán. I did not have any expectations. Oh my, the writing is absolutely bad. I watched the entire episode to give it a real chance. I kept repeating out loud to myself, this is so bad. The performances from everyone in episode 1 is mediocre; acting that looked, sounded and felt like acting.

The sound mixing is also not done well. Each time a scene features music, the music is too loud which caused me to continually adjust the volume. Once I lowered the volume I then could not hear the dialogue well after the music ceased so I would then need to increase the volume. Bad writing, bad acting, poor sound mixing, and oh so boring. Oh, my!

Give it a chance
fjxstbnn14 August 2021
Everyone is rating the show poorly on only episode - the pilot episode. Yes, it's different than the original. It has to be. Ricardo Montablan and Herve Villichez are no longer with us. There was a nice homage at the beginning to Mr. Roarke. Unfortunately some shows take a few episodes or a few seasons to find their footing and become really great story telling devices. Be patient. Give the show a chance. It has a good foundation.

"Half able to pay attention"
msdude2320008 September 2021
There is apparently nothing else worth watching on a Tuesday night, so I am tuning into this..... but only paying "half attention" while on the computer or doing something else...... Not able to pay "rapt" attention, it is just not interesting enough and I find the stories kind of "slow". Not comparing it at all to the original version, I'm looking at it as an entirely new show. Great scenery, though!!

Hallmark meets soap opera, not a good thing.
jaccer1115 August 2021
Unfortunately they film this like a hallmark soap opera and that removes and imagination and originality. Acting and filming is subpar. Landscape is amazing though!

An enjoyable homage to the original series
mcd11712 August 2021
I found the first episode warm, touching, and entertaining. The two stories balanced each other nicely. Roslyn Sanchez is great as the new Roarke. She carries the show beautifully, adding a playful and quite human touch to the island's magic.

Surprisingly cute...but....
charlottestreet-2834619 August 2021
Reading the negative reviews makes us wonder what people were expecting this to be - the original was clean, cheesy fun. This is similar, but with the first episode being a little predictable...

Our main issue here is with the audio quality. We had to put subtitles on for both episodes that we watched because it was impossible to understand what was being said - low level audio tracks... speaking too quickly...not sure - but my kids couldn't understand the conversations either.

A remake too far
bosporan12 May 2022
Fantasy Island is simply not very good, a shadow of its impressive ancestor with dull stories, poor writing and wooden acting. A show to be robustly avoided.

It covers real issues.
jrmitch8015 August 2021
Cancer, verbal abuse, body shaming, and sexuality... These are sometimes difficult issues to discuss and I think the first episode does this quite well. I see a lot of negative reviews for this show, but they all seem superficial when compared to the subject matter. Watch the show and judge for yourself.

Needs more variety in the stories...
kjc-322058 September 2021
Although I enjoy the stories so far, I was looking forward to the thrillers, chillers, and shockers. Where are the spooky stories? Where are the action fantasies? Where is the laugh-out-loud silly fantasy? A sappy, romance or coming-to-oneself drama is fine once in a while, but not every week. The show is about to lose me as a regular...

No Fantasy Island would be a better title.
kerrydunn26 September 2021
Every single episode is a boring "lets explore our real feelings" or "relive some childhood drama" or "group therapy" session instead of fantasies.

The show completely misses it's mark. It's supposed to be about FANTASIES - not facing some personal issues.

Not one episode so far has even come close to being a fantasy.

I won't be sad when this is cancelled. It's not scoring well on the critic sites.
