Fascinating Story, Repellant Film
SAMTHEBESTEST14 April 2023
Shaakuntalam (2023) : Movie Review -

Gunasekhar brings a pan-India adaptation of Kalidasa's legendary play, Shaakuntalam, with Samantha Prabhu and Dev Mohan. You don't need to see or read Kalidasa's epic because the story has been seen in many films over the years. You just didn't know this because those films presented it in different manners and with different setups. There are like a bunch of adaptations of this iconic story, right from the silent era to the early talkie era to modern Technicolour filmmaking in the post-independence era. The films and plays that were adopted from the Abhijnanashakuntalam or Shakuntala's tale are: in 1920 by Suchet Singh and by Shree Nath Patankar, in 1929 by Fatma Begum, in 1931 by Mohan Dayaram Bhavnani and by J. J. Madan; in the talkie era we have: in 1932 by Sarvottam Badami, a lost 1932 Hindi film, in 1940 by Ellis Dungan, in 1941 by Jyotish Bannerjee, 1943 by Shantaram Rajaram Vankudre, 1961 by Bhupen Hazarika, in 1965 by V. Shantaram and then Kunchacko, 1966 by Kamalakara Kameshwara Rao, then a play by Vijaya Mehta, which was later adopted as a TV series etc. Now, after ages, the story gets a pan-Indian adaptation, only to do injustice to its legacy. Such a fascinating and powerful feminism story it is, but such a lame presentation Gunasekhar gave to it. It is so annoying to see one of the masterpieces of world literature getting destroyed in a sudden heat of pan-India projection.

Shakuntala (Samantha Prabhu) is the only daughter of the sage Visvamitra and the apsara Menaka. Abandoned at birth by her parents, she is reared in the secluded hermitage of the sage Kanva and grows up an innocent maiden. Set in a pre-Mahabharata era, Shaakuntalam is the love story of King Dushyanta (Dev Mohan), who possesses almost all the qualities of a brave and noble minded hero, and Shakuntala. Dushyanta falls in love at first sight, as does Shakuntala. They both have a Gandharva marriage, have a honeymoon, and then the king has to leave for his duties. He promises to come back, and he does when Shakuntala is pregnant with his child, but their expected reunion is abandoned by the sage Durvasa's curse. All the memories of Shakuntala fade from Dushyant's life, and she is humiliated at his court. Will she be able to grow up with her child all alone, and will Dushyant be able to get her back? Find out about it in the film if you are unaware of this legendary tale from our Indian literature.

Shakuntalam is a fascinating story, and I don't really think the story is at fault here. It is our history/mythology (choose your side), and we can't help it if things did happen that way in the ancient era and you can't find them reasonable enough in 2023. The problem is its screenplay, which is terribly outdated. Those TV serials we used to watch in the 80s and 90s on Historical/mythological epics were far more updated than this. What's that overly dramatic background score? What did that Hindi-dubbed dialogue actually mean? I don't see how an intimate honeymoon song can suddenly get crowded with 6 background dancers. I don't understand how some of those cheap misogynist terms remain safe in a hard-hitting feminist drama. I couldn't understand the time leap and the Hindi-translated songs coming in between when nobody was interested in watching them. Bal Gandharva's musical adaptation had 100x better songs and song videos in the 40s and 50s than this. Okay, so you have animals all around you to make it more emotional, but don't play with human emotions at least. The flaws in the screenplay can go longer than the film's runtime if I want, but let's stop now with just one word: Gruesome.

Speaking of acting, Shakuntala's role needed a beautiful face, and that's what Samantha Ruth Prabhu is. However, they forgot that it needed a powerful actor too. Shakuntala's monologue in King Dushyant's court is one of the major highlights of this classic tale, but see how mediocre it looks here with Samantha. I am saying it again: the 90s daily soaps were far more updated then than what Shaakuntalam does in 2023. One cannot imagine Dev Mohan as a muscular and brave king who fights elephants, tigers, wolves, and an army of a million because he doesn't have the required physics. Yes, the performance is somewhat applicable and sorted, but it doesn't make up for the whole thing. The supporting cast of Sachin Khedekar, Aditi Balan, Gautami, Ananya Nagalla, Prakash Raj, Mohan Babu, Jisshu Sengupta, Kabir Duhan Singh, Kabir Bedi, Subbaraju, and others is below average. Allu Araha and her chatterbox segments will be loved by all.

You can't go wrong with the language, particularly with a film based on an ancient tale. Shaakuntalam is weak at the base there. The first floor, I mean, the grandeur is somewhat watchable on the big screen, but 3D goggles for 145 minutes, and that too for a slow film like this, are entitled to make your head a bit heavy and restless. The film was delayed for visual effects, but even they are not worthy. Believe me, KV Reddy's Mayabazar (1957) had better effects than this. I never saw any legendary ancient tale going so melodramatic with known segments the way Shaakuntalam has gone. Take "Cleopatra" (1933), "The Ten Commandments" (1956), and "Ben-Hur" (1959), for instance. These films were made when Indian cinema was struggling for one big global sensation, and they still look better than today's films after 8-9 decades. What a shame for us! Gunasekhar's Shaakuntalam wants to look older, forcefully; so old that I thought it might go behind BC and then to the dystopian era, only to get close to the Mahabharata's period. Sorry, Guna sir-what a repellant film you have made on a fascinating story like this. Expected Shakun-to-come, but instead came Apshaakuntalam.

Changed Story
vishalagarwal-5221216 April 2023
Why story was changed from original book by Mahakavi Kalidasa? Script writer thought he can do justice with story which Great Kalidasa missed, and with this sole of movie killed.

Shakuntala went to Shantanu with her son, and movie shows she went when she was pregnant.

Great Shantanu can't even think of insulting a woman that too when she was pregnant, but story did great injustice with history as well as movie.

Looks South cinema has started getting inspiration from Mumbai cinema, so sorry to say you are losing credibility when South cinema earned in last 2-3 years. Your choice, as this is your money and area.

Wrong attempt by Guna teamworks and Samantha big minus
RameshJ8513 May 2023
Samantha is biggest drawback to this movie. Not much expressions and no glamour, her weak expressions leads to feel weakness to audiences. Dev Mohan is ok but not familiar face to Telugu audience another minus. Songs and BGM not apt truly speaking worst. It's a known story but director should show some intensity no elevations. No importance for few characters and poor graphics. Like Srinu Vaitla, it's better to stop makings films by Guna Shekar. Loosing all his reputation. It's time for Dil Raju to stop experiments. Better save money and invest on low budget movies like Balagam. Entire movie no scene creates impact to us.

Gunashekar wasted an epic
vkr-9482516 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Direction is at its worst. Everything looks unreal.. Costumes, Visuals, Everything looks so cheap that they are brought from koti market.

It was an amazing play by Kalidasa, named Abhignana Shakuntalam and the narration by kalidasa is extraordinary. He made it's one of most powerful play of his works.

But Taking that story, this director almost done prostitution to the story and screenplay. It's shame on such people who wantedly degrade the culture of country.

Overall movie is at its worst. Samantha action and voice is the biggest drawback of the movie as she lost everything on acting as she can sell groundnuts on streets instead of wasting our time on screen. Coming to allu Arha... Is she really necessary? That idiotish behavior of Allu Arjun who arrogantly throwing money everywhere and wantedly imposed his pathetic acting daughter, as main character here made this a huge flop. For boy characters boys will be perfect fit. This is not Bhakta prahallada movie to act extraordinarily in such great roles.

Finally, don't watch this movie in theaters if you are expecting an Epic.

If you want 2 hours time wasting.. Then go.

Utterly tedious watch.
chand-suhas11 May 2023
Gunashekar brings on screen the tale of Abhignyana Shakuntalam and completely fails in doing justice. He is bogged down by his own outdated narrative. While narrating a known story, there should be a tad bit of freshness to it at the very least which was completely missing here like the non-existing chemistry between Samantha and Dev Mohan. The only believable character turned out to be Durvasa Muni played by Mohan Babu.

The narrative is poor and slow paced along with the tacky visuals, the film simply tests the patience of the viewers who might even find the dialect bit too hard to digest. This adaptation would work only if the audience buy into the premise and connect to the characters. The songs were forgettable. The introduction of the villains and the final battle simply prolonged the story. The VFX was simply that below par.

As far as the performances go, Samantha as Shakuntala and Dev Mohan as Dushyant have tried to be as earnest as they can but they simply don't fit these characters to make their love story believable or even have any impact. The supporting cast especially the ones like Shiva Balaji used for comic relief, went over the top. I am harsh but even if I try to be lenient, there isn't a single thing in this film that stands out.

Poor Execution
ankurdowarah15 April 2023
I went to watch the movie with high expectations but the poor Execution of the movie didn't keep me tied up in the cinema hall. The story of Shakuntala, which I heard from my grandmother as a child, replaced the story I thought was very different, the graphics of the film were less, the film does not seem to be shot in the jungle from any angle. No one will believes that this movie came from South Industry where we have seen Bahubali, RRR, KGF etc movie which are very prominent VFX. Sorry to say, but Samantha for the character of Shakuntala is not a good choice. This movie is not for her. Thank you.

Worse than a Telugu serial
rohithd-9356816 April 2023
Gunasekar should start making Telugu serials instead of making wasting top talent. Time and again he has proved off late that he has lost his touch to make good content. The movie fails in every department right from the inception to the screenplay to the CGI to the dialogues. Samantha's performance was good but her imperfect Telugu wasn't suitable for the role.

Allu Arjun's daughter did a really good job in the movie. She's the standout actor in the entire movie.

I literally stayed back in the theater for the AC so that I could avoid the extreme heat outside.

One big big headache of a movie !

Give try
prasadkasu17 June 2023
You can watch this movie compare to adipurush, I watch both movies simultaneously. Definitely this movie has deficiency. You can ignore those some time VFX feel like tv shows VFX , final fight wasn't that good but it was short so it's ok. This movie has emotions Samantha's good acting, descent bgm, they at least give efforts to movie you can see that , movie lacks some time but still it's watchable.

Good points - 1.bgm 2. Story telling 3. Movie create interest for the audience 4. Some scenarios & movie set 5. Durvasa muni (actor) did good job 6. Efforts to make movie watchable Bad points - 1. Tv show level vfx , some scenes poor 2. Songs and dance choreography not sync that much 3. Bettle scene feels low budget bahubali fight (but quick) 4. Not feels realistic in some scenes specially Kingdom scene give bahubali wibe 5.etc. Small details.

worst story telling and execution
haripriya12 May 2023
India is called Bharata after the name of the son of Shakuntala.

I have heard this story so many times since my Grand mother name is Shakuntala. My grand parents told this story in epic way and I want to see it on screen.

The team wasted a good love story. The hero and his acting is the most irritating part in the movie. Over cooked CG. Noting was related or not well glued. Costumes and the throne room are the only good things on the movie.

Not sure why such a good stories from our Mythistries are ruined for Blockbusters. I don't see any commercial aspects too.

India is called Bharata after the name of the son of Shakuntala. It is not justified.

My History is my pride..
mishradebadatta-9467615 April 2023
How someone can give this movie 1 star. Maybe that person is an accidental Indian who doesn't know how to respect Indian culture and History. A good attempt by the director who dared to make a film on Abhigyan Shakuntalam: A legendary love story of India and the birth story of the real father of India: Chakravarti Samrat Bharat. You are an inspiration to other directors who will think to produce this kind of more movies. Don't give importance to negative reviews. Just go for watch and witness the whole history in your eyes. I can assured if you love Indian history then definitely you will like it. Our history is our Pride. Jai Hind, Jai Bharat.

Not satisfied.
ramyachukkas14 April 2023
Movie is Good but traditional ancient and natural love drama between hero and heroine was missing. I felt like movie was modern based drama. There is no ancient look on Samantha's appearance and that too she was sort of not performing well in relation to her expressions. Movie climax was good. Movie was simply ended. Totally the visuals of forest was not at all good and there is no life in that. Music is good. Way of movie presentation is not satisfied in my perspective. But Movie involves mostly hardwork of many people and I really appreciate that. Once again congratulations to this movie team.

Bad acting
Surabhitha22 May 2023
In my opinion not real, a lot of things including facial expressions looked fake. Disappointed. I never taught someone could act so fake n looked obvious on screen. Chemistry was not there, storyline could have been more better. I found stories in cut like manner than a storytelling manner. At some places I could not relate one scene to another.

I saw better movies. The most irony of all was the war scene it was so fake and boring till I had to fast forward. I found the dance choreography didn't fit the song and it's meaning. In overall a movie to watch to pass time bt don't keep much hope as u would be sad.

Good story line with less efforts in execution
vipul-bigbadguy11 May 2023
King and hero of the film has not put enough efforts in his acting, he seems in n out from the character very often. VFX, props, artifacts are at its worst level, not convincing enough. As a audience you can find plenty of mistakes in props selections. Even villains of the story are funnily seems like actors from school drama. You can watch it once with less expectations. If you are already having high expectations then I'll suggest don't waste your time and do not spoil the very well known story of shankutala and King Dushyanth. That's from my side but as I need to add atleast 600 words I'm trying to met that condition.

Chronologically Defects in the Story
sainimukesh-9930223 April 2023
Need to research before portray the story. In movie, Shankuntla's friends were talking about Ramayana's characters but it happened much later.

In Ramayana as brahamrishi Viswamitra shared his past experiences with Shri Ram and Laxman ji that sensuality misguide male and can keep away from deeds by giving example of Menaka and his relationship. Menaka was the mother of Shakuntla and Vishwamitra was her father. Rishi after achieving the degree of Brahamrishi, invited for a meeting in devlok by Indra and Vashishtha. Later it was decided Vishwamitra will take test of king Harishchandra who was the greatest follower of truth. Between Harishchandra and lord Rama there is huge generation gap. King Dushyant was contemporary of Chanchu (3-4 generations next to King Harishchandra)

So this story is chronologically defective with many more respect.

Poorly executed and lazily written film with great performance by Samantha
SohailH2215 May 2023
Shaakuntalam is poorly executed and lazily written with poor VFX and graphics! The screenplay is very boring and slow.

Samantha gives her best and she looks absolutely gorgeous and stunning in the costumes and in every frame! But the screenplay and execution is what ruins it. Even Samantha can't hold the film from drowning terribly. But Samantha is a great actress and she happened to be my favourite and I loved her since Dookudu!

Allu Arha's cameo is adorable and cute! Loved her! She gave a good performance.

Gunashekar garu's execution was really poor, could have been better with a tighter screenplay and better execution! A huge letdown....

Giving 2 stars for Samantha!! Hardworking and amazing actress! Love you forever Sam!!

Soap movie
diwakar-venkata14 May 2023
Poor graphics. Goes like a soap tv serial dragged painfully to beat the audience with the worst boredom one could ever imagine. Samantha's own voice spoiled the character to infinite levels. I felt that this was the worst movie ever made in the history of mythological genre. Refrain from watching this nonsense. There was a disconnect in between. Unwanted action scenes. Tigers everywhere. Peacocks flying randomly. Deers appearing randomly. I would say for the sake of making it unreal the director tried his best. The romance between the hero and heroine doesn't click. None of the characters are strongly written. Overall a nonsense movie.

A tale narrated that came out as a disaster
pranayjalvi20 May 2023
Shaakuntalam, for starters, didn't even felt like a movie. It's kind of a parody movie of all the old era Shakuntala adaptations that had hit the screen.

The movie had nothing to offer whatsoever, except the fact that Samantha was playing the lead. The direction was poor, the vfx was even worse than what we experienced in Adipurush trailer and the story was narrated in such a way that it felt like watching a B-Grade movie with an A-listed actress. The movie neither had emotion nor anything that can be called acting. The screenplay and the execution was a total misfire. The fact that even the sparkle of Samantha didn't do any wonders is evident enough to certify Shaakuntalam as a big-time failure as a movie and an unremovable stain that will remain in Samantha's filmography.

My Rating : 2/10.

loved it!
rashzjm17 April 2023
Actors did an amazing job in the film. The story is a musical classic tale with fanatical aspects. The direction was good.

I expected poor vfx but was genuinely surprised that they were good enough. The costumes were so good!! (esp in the second half)

Sam did an amazing job!! Dev as Dushyant was perfect for the role! For the people who are used to fast action commercial movies, won't like a slow paced classic story. It is so good to see an adhyaya of Mahabaratha as a movie. Its been a while since we saw such a movie.

Allu Arha was definetly a highlight in the second half. Overall it was an amazing movie, talented cast, good music and slightly above average vfx. Would love to watch it again!!

Worst boring movie. dont watch and dont waste time
azhar-442817 June 2023
This film falls short of expectations, reminiscent of dated Indian TV serials. The pacing is painfully slow, and the storyline feels underdeveloped. Additionally, the Hindi dubbing quality leaves much to be desired. It's a disappointment that fails to captivate. Dont watch. Samantha Ruth Prabhu personal married Life have similarity Shakuntala character.
rajkumarsworld20 April 2023
This film is good but, due to Six Months Delay and Over experiment cause it got failed on box office and delceraded as Biggest box-office Bomb.

When, this film Trailer Released that time I am Very excited but, Now one Interested for this Film, everyone forget about this film before it's Release.

On this Film Samantha Ruth Prabhu Justified her character and I found this Shakuntala character similarity with her personal married Life.

As a Audiance she is the perfect actress to play this title character. I can find that emotions on her face. It's not a Happy ending Love Story of Shakuntala. It's a Dark Sad Story of Shakuntala.

Now-a-day's peoples don't like thios emotional sad Love Story Films. It;'s a Huge starcast based big budget film But, it's did not get right Time or Luck for Release.

Peoples wants Love Romance based Action Story based films.

Why such harsh treatment was meted out ?
bharatidiggikar25 May 2023
V good attempt, loved the film. Do not understand why it was judged so harshly. It gave a fair feel of a timeless epic. The story pans heavens and earth, kingdoms and ashramas, humans Gods Demi gods, Asuras and animals . I liked the way the flow was worked out. Recently absolutely plotless absurd films have made great business on box office . It is both Lady Luck and tastes of public .. I think this film was a failure perhaps because it did not meet the high standards of critics and popular mediocre standards of entertainment industry. But people like me who watch it on OTT will surely like the mega attempt.

Start of good movies
mouli2312 May 2023
Every effort has its value. Everytime success can't be weighed with box office touch. The movie has set good vfx. The cast introduction could have been better and the language script could have been better.

Other character's greatness is not showed enough. Every scene connection could have been made better. Philosophy/ spirituality or the morals could have been shown better. Scene depiction when pushing out Shakuntala was shown for too long

VFX showing the animals was done very nicely. The kingdom was very vast but shown very empty.

Some characters require methodical actors. Good movie days.

Genuine effort by director gunasekhar
k-n-narin14 April 2023
Like rudhramadevi , shakunthalam is another genuine effort by director gunasekhar

People who like regular commercial formula might not find interesting but definetly a must watch movie to know story of 1st abandoned child in history known to world.

And also who was the bharatha on which indian subcontinent jambu dweep got its name .

And it dawn of new era

Should appreciate effort of director as he tried keep original essence of the story Bgm is bit off and 1st half was going bit boring at few scenes as it felt repeated but post interval storay back on track

Overall good movie to watch with some good stories in the era of just commercial movies.
