In the Purgatory
claudio_carvalho25 April 2023
Lyra and Will reach the Purgatory, where they look for Roger. The also find Lee Scoresby and many dead people that are trapped in the Purgatory. Will tries to open a hole out but it does not work. They conclude that they need to reach a higher point to leave the Purgatory. Meanwhile, Mrs. Coulter tries to avoid MacPhail from releasing the bomb, and he kills Dr. Cooper and Commander Roke to activate the release. Will the bomb be released?

"No Way Out" is a good episode of "His Dark Materials", where Lyra does not scream. The engaging part is Mrs. Coulter trying to disassemble the pump, but the arrogant Ariel has irritated the Regent Metatron, with tragic results. My vote is seven.

Justice for a long-awaited series.

Warning: Spoilers
I have been a fan of the books since childhood. I'm late 30s now, and math is hard, so I don't remember how many times I've read the series. My copies of the books are worn and water damaged from one too many drops in the tub. The spines are broken. One has been rebound.

So I can say with confidence, "I've read them a lot."

The pressures of adapting an entire world into script format must be high. Key moments in the trilogy didn't hit the same. When did Lee die? Why can't I remember Will's Dad? Pivotal moments were forgotten. The writing didn't pack the punch it needed to.

But Amelia Spencer knocked it out of the park with this episode, and season three in general. She has found all the feeling of the book and brought it to the screen. As a fan, who spent a lonely childhood drunk on the tenacity and strength of these two children and the adults who loved them, I am so glad she is with us.

I cannot wait to see what else she creates.

No Way Out

No Way Out continues with Lyra and Will's journey to the Land of the Dead. Lyra meets Roger but they need to find a way out for the rest of the people stuck in a kind of limbo.

There are surprises as Lyra once again meets Lee Scoresby. His death was apparently quick hence why he ended up here.

There were also wondrous sights in this episode. Roller skating elephants.

Once again Mrs Coulter steals the show. She has Father MacPhail's number as she tells him that he has blood in his hands. Here MacPhail is certainly unhinged. Even Father Gomez realises this now.

With Mrs Coulter facing death as Father MacPhail is about to sever he from her daemon. She is still at her manipulative best. Dr Cooper is her target, the only one who could save her.

The third series has given the producers of the television series a had hard task. A difficult third book to adapt.

The scenes here in the Land of the Dead are both surreal and at times desolate.

Mary Malone's journey should not be forgotten. Maybe she can deliver salvation in her journey.

I don't think we're all watching the same show.

Warning: Spoilers
Elephants on rollerballs. Not normal elephants but cute elephants that belong on Avatar. They speak a foreign language. She sits on a rock and learns this new language overnight. Insert eyeroll here. Meanwhile Will and Lyra are still on the boat. Unfortunately they don't immediately get eaten by river monsters or ghouls or any other evil creature you hope would eat them. They live. This saddens me because I have to bear more of this nonsense talk between two characters with zero chemistry and zero personality. Nothing scary happens. I don't know why they built it up to be the scariest place ever. Her dumb demon stayed whining about it like we would see some monsters. On the other world, Spock is still flying around the palace. Nobody sees him or hears his metal wings, yet most of us can hear a mosquito 5 feet away from us. He's a silent busy bee though being a good little spy. They're still working on a hair bomb. Lyra's mother is in a holding cell....again. She looks like crap. That makes me happy as well since they haven't killed her off yet and I'm still looking forward to that. For a change I'm actually rooting for the bad guys here. I'm 28 minutes in. Bored out of my life and writing this review. It can't possibly get better. Anyone giving this episode a 10 star review is high on dust.
