Only half decent
Jim_Screechy23 April 2022
Firstly let me just say the ratings here of 1's and 2's are just idiotic. There are always 'individuals' with an axe to grind about something they don't like, but a review is here not just to voice opinion, or as happens too often here 'vent' but also help others decide what to watch, and using a false perspective helps no one... so here goes.

I enjoyed most of this movie. It seems to be the norm these days but the writing, or more accurately parts of the plot and script, really do need some work. The shortcomings here are a tad shy of what I'd call 'serious' but enough to taint the overall movie sufficiently to make the viewing experience lacking. The ending in particular is hurried and a little foolish. It's poorly contrived and feels a little panicked as though there wasn't enough time to get it completely right. It lets down what is otherwise a half decent tale quite badly.

Sam Worthington plays a locally feared criminal head honcho, but we're given no information on the nature of this illicit business , in fact all aspects of this part of the story are curiously absent and we're left with a void of detail that hampers our ability to form any real connection with aspects of the story and many of the characters because of this. Considering the length of the film 1:36 they should really have re-appropriated some of the time afforded to many of the scenes that laboured for no good reason, to this more significant aspect of the story.

Worthington's rag-tag four man outfit of henchmen are really a 'Keystones Cop' bunch of misfits that seem anything but professional hitmen, or even seasoned thugs. Worthington does a good job with the role and totally carries pretty much all his scenes though sadly he's still let down but some poor screenplay and a wanting script.

Lena Headly tends to excel in roles that either require little emotional expression or those requiring excellence in the dark or negative side of human emotions and failings. She struggles a bit with the brighter emotional moments, even smiling seems to push her abilities somewhat. Though she does give a good performance, she's a little out of her depth in some of the scenes. Still, I think she does the role justice, and does pretty good job working with the material she's given... such as it is.

Dean Scott Vazquez is very good here and he may be one to watch as he certainly has a lot of potential and could be a star in the making. Barbara Hershey has a minor role but the rest of the cast is largely forgettable save Cam Gigandet who I found particularly entertaining as Tommy.

Its an enjoyable film for the most part and though it does fall short in quite a few areas the underlying story is a good one. Sadly it wasn't done well here, and I can't really recommend it as a satisfying entertainment piece. At one hour and thirty six minutes, its a lot of time to invest in mediocrity.

Warning: Spoilers
Gypsy Moon (Lena Headey) scored a contract as an author and is going to quit working as a stripper and escort. Meanwhile Ralph is Jack's (Sam Worthington) accountant who has absconded with some money. Ralph and family end up dead leaving his son Sam (Dean Scott Vazquez) who has the I pad to access the money. Sam hides out at Gypsy's house and Jack's thugs want the pad and the boy dead. We end up with a fairly low intensity chase scene.

The attempted to make a crime story into something about human connections, a feel good story. The genres never mix well and they didn't do a good job at either. Nice stereotype making the accountant Jewish. Re-watch "Gloria" instead.

Guide: F-word, sex, nudity (Lena Headey)

Got lost in itself.
ianclarke34029 April 2022
Doesn't know if it's a thriller, a family film or just a bad guy meets bad girl film but somebody seems to have told half the cast it was a comedy judging by the acting !

This is a nonsense story with struggling out of work actors looking for a pay day and a director who thinks a whiny kid pulling at the audiences heartstrings is a guarantee of success !

That kid was very annoying BTW !

Could you possibly squeeze any more cliches, red herrings and garbage side plots into a film with five minutes worth of story ?

Good filming and production, the sound is good and the lighting is faultless, that's why I gave it 3 stars !

Just plain bad on so many fronts
ReviewingFromCT19 September 2022
Watched this on Hulu last night as I had 90+ minutes to kill. I'd have been better off watching a YouTube video of grass growing. Quite simply nothing at all good about this movie. I gave it 2 stars because the actors themselves weren't bad even if their dialog and plot points were awful.

As many have noted the first thing I thought of with the opening premise was Gloria from the 80s. I haven't seen that in decades and now want to go back to try and scrub this from my brain.

As others have also noted the movie just doesn't know where it wants to go or what it wants to be.

The fact that we're supposed to buy into a relationship between the boy and the woman who have zero connection other than being neighbors is too much to ask. The kid just had his entire family murdered and a few hours later they're laughing and joking about her skirt being too short and PB&Js.

Now it's easy to slice and dice it from a plot/reality point and I wont do that on everything ( there were many ) but there are a few notable things.

Why wouldn't she just bring the kid to the closest non-local ( avoid corruption ) police station ?

Why was she still pretending to have this weird love/hare relationship with a dude that killed an entire family ?

Tie those 2 together and the police put him away for life.

SPOILER-Even in the end he gets away and there's no punishment for him-SPOILER

How/why did Worthington's character get from the cemetery which was seemingly hours away to the airport where his young g/f just happened to be ?

But maybe my biggest problem with it was the fact that Gypsy tells this horrifying story about losing her kid in a car accident and then thinks its OK to let the kid take the steering wheel on a dark road while she's sleepy. And then she does the letting him drive thing a few more times. WTH

Then it's all wrapped up nicely with them going away together and him no longer caring that his parents were murdered.

Just absolute trash. Wish I could unwatch it.

Starts Off Bad, But Wait, it Gets Worse...
psxexperten23 April 2022
Another worst film! Full of boring conversation, and annoying overuse scene! Avoid at all cost!

Whoever makes this garbage should stop and focus on something else. Wedding videos maybe? Or possibly just a new career in general because this is fraud.

This film is bad. Which is a shame because the acting's pretty good. Intriguing cast.

But man oh man this is just amateur hour. I've seen better films on the dollar rental shelf back in the 90s.

An editing mess.
LordCommandar24 April 2022
Omg the editing on this one was horrendous. The story flow was so uneven, unbalanced and all over the place. I so love Lena Headley but man this was an absolute clunker. What's even more ridiculous was Sam Worthington's awful western accent. In one scene he's talks like a westerner, the next scene, the accent is gone...LMBO. You are gonna have a rough time making of sense of this film, I kid you not. I barely got thru it.....hard ass pass.

Pitiful rip off of John Cassavetes/Gina Rowland's "Gloria."
random-7077822 April 2022
America's greatest independent writer/director, John Cassavetes, and his wife, the incomparable actress Gina Rowlands, made a great film called "Gloria" in 1980.

It is so well regarded a film that it has been copied no less than five times. Among the copies, are (inverting the genders) Luc Besson's film with Jean Reno and Nathalie Portman "Leon the Professional", "Julia" staring Tilda Swinton.

But "9 Bullets" is a truly junk rip off of Gloria. Tedious, laughable dialogue, lousy acting.

They spent 90% of the budget on cast.
rafaews23 April 2022
10% on drone shots.

No money for cinematography, vfx, soundtrack. The director thought he could do it. Well, he couldn't.

The actors thought no one was gonna see this and they just didn't care.

Lazy, lame and labored.

I couldn't go past 15 minutes.

Gigi Gaston: name change won't save an awful story
roger_towne24 April 2022
A name change from Gypsy Moon to "9 Bullets" won't save this movie from being garbage. Neither will Sam Worthington or Barbara Hershey both of whom have small and smaller parts, respectively. The storyline is so weak and predictable you already know what's going to happen after Lena Headey's yawn-inspiring burlesque scene 10 minutes into this waste of time.

Gaston tries to drive the story with two main themes - the non-existent chemistry between Dean Scott Vazquez and Lena Headey, and contrived Hollywood storytelling featuring an uninterested Sam Worthington. Again, yawn.

The story reaches an exceptionally underwhelming crescendo that's as insulting to the your intelligence as anything you've wasted your time watching so far. Don't you like being treated like a moron? Seems that's about 50% of what Hollywood puts out now, even with name-brand stars.

Yet another waste-of-time.

Amateur production that was more sappy and cheesy than a suspenseful thriller.
Top_Dawg_Critic27 April 2022
Novice producer, writer and director Gigi Gaston was ok (for a newb) in her directing, but her screenplay was more of a high school drama class caliber. It felt like a Lifetime meets Hallmark movie (especially with the sappy score), but with a frustratingly poorly written derivative plot-hole riddled unconvincing script. The lovely Lena Headey tried her best, but you can tell that Gaston's inexperience in cast direction failed most of the other actors, even the young and spunky Dean Scott Vazquez who became overbearingly annoying very quickly. The editing was also horrible as many scenes were too choppy and confusing. It almost felt like the screenplay was only a few pages long, and everyone just winged it as the cameras rolled. I did watch it until the end, and it did have it's decent moments, and as such, is certainly not deserving of all these ridiculous 1's and 2's, especially since the filmmaker is a newb. It's a 6/10 from me, mostly for Headey who tried her best, and looked great doing so.

Another copycat of Gena Rowlands' "Gloria" of 1980 (no, not the Sharon Stone's remake)..a gem of a film//
privatelyed24 April 2022
Want to see a similar movie, with a much believable lead female (played with grit and conviction by Rowlands) and supported by a very likeable young boy (played by John Adames)..look for "Gloria of 1980." No nonsense acting delivered by both. This one, however..well, a one time watch just to kill time//

Sweet story of second chances
kristimchugh5 May 2022
What a great story of second chances! Not sure why this was marketed as a "thriller".... a story of two people of completely different lives who need each other and make it against all odds. Heady beautifully executed her character arc. The talented young Dean has a huge career ahead of him! Great script and great direction. Can't wait to see what Gaston produces/directs next!

Decent Movie
DoSiDoe26 April 2022
The movie was enjoyable, it was nice to see acting for a change and not wannbe actors posing in front of a green screen and having the techno-nerds make them dance. A movie that actually has a message and tells a story of love and redemption. A movie with no impossible car chases or mega explosions that level a city (yet the hero somehow survives)

If you're looking for entertainment where a Norse god is getting drunk and crying because he killed an entity that would have destroyed the universe, or a Russian super spy whining that her daddy didn't love her enough, this movie probably isn't for you. It wasn't meant to compete with mega-budget, young-male fantasy flicks.

It is a tale about a woman with a rough past who learns to love again and work for something larger than herself.

At times it gets a bit clunky and discordant, the dialog falters at times, just like real life. The message, however, moves forward and we can see the change taking place in Gypsy.

9 Bullets is a much needed movie and message for these times.

Abysmally cringe-worthily dumb - Headey & Worthington are so much better than this
danieljfarthing10 May 2022
In abysmally dumb so-called thriller "9 Bullets" Lena Headey's a retiring burlesque dancer (for no particular reason) who goes on the run with obnoxiously over-confident brat kid Dean Scott Vazquez (poor)) after his family's slain by the cartoonish henchmen of clichéd mobster Sam Worthington - who of course come after them (yawn). The worst aspect is the annoyingly unrealistic writing from Gigi Gaston (who also directs) and the crass, dislikable resultant characters (especially Vazquez - so bad)) and their cringe-worthy relationships & dialogues. It's painful to endure, just awful - Heady & Worthington are SO much better than crap like this. A turd.

A kid more annoying than Jaden Smith
amytude4 July 2022
Didn't think it would be possible to be more irritated by a child than I was with Jaden smith in anything , but here we are.

This whole movie is ridiculous. Cheesy hallmark movie feel with a cheap action story written in it.

It's truly awful.

Kluster
SelenetheHunter3 September 2022
This movie is a kluster and a half. It's messy and disorganized, buried in unnecessary scenes and terrible editing. The non linear moments aren't necessary. The dialogue more than a little ridiculous. The costuming and makeup department when more than a little heavy handed in trying to show us how much Gypsy is a disaster. I got about half way and tapped out. I don't understand what Jack is the big bad and how he's gotten away with it.... It's just a messy messed up story and I hate that this is where Lena Hadley has had to go to get away from the game of thrones mess, she has a great acting ability and I wish she had found a better gig than this.

Gets worse by the minute
Take one actress on a downward spiral after GoT, throw in a diversity hire kid who acts so badly it makes you cringe physically and Disney it up by trying to force us to believe the imbecile kid is a genious while also pushing ponzi scheme crypto ... et voila!

But wait what a bout the plot, talent and editing?

Rubbish
haroot_azarian4 April 2023
The first thing that I want to say about this movie is that I think Gigi Gaston should stick to directing cheap Lifetime thrillers, she did not do too bad with them (Fatal Memory and the Nanny Murders).

From the beginning the movie was all over the place. The story was so weak and most of the time stupid. The dialogue was even worse; pointless and meaningless.

This movie made Lena Headey look so amateurish. Nothing like 300 and its sequel and especially Gunpowder Milkshake where she really .

The little kid was totally annoying. His lines were stupid! You're broken I'll fix you, just one example.

I liked Sam in some movies (Man on a Ledge and the Hunter's Prayer). He was ok in Avatar 1 but Avatar 2 which I totally hated, therefore I hated all the rest of the casts' performances too. He is also diabolical in this one.

I do not recommend this one!

A Story That Has been Done Better In Previous Years And Therefore Makes This Rendition Pointless!
silicontourist2 May 2022
Lena Headey I think is a wonderful actress and can work any role perfectly but she certainly wasn't challenged with this dull script.

I've no idea about anything to do with the young child, Dean Scott Vazquez, who is the basis of the whole story but, he was very good with his delivery, acting style (though his crying in the early film parts is seriously annoying).

Barbara Hershey is like Lena in that she can work a role superbly.

Sam Worthington I have never thought of as a good (though he is not terrible) actor simply because ... 1) ...he always looks like he is half asleep and hasn't quite woken up to his surroundings and always looks like he is not putting any effort/interest into his roles (though not much he could really do with this naff script)... 2) ...plus - IMHO - he just doesn't have that strong screen presence factor, say like Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jnr, Gene Hackman etc.

It opens with burlesque dancer Lena on stage and has the camera about 6 feet away from her, so close you cannot see anything; even though she is hardly moving at all...with only slight - and I do mean SLIGHT - hand movements. Totally unimpressive and NOT a good way to immerse you into a film!

The problem with the film was that it was just dreary, dragged along in a dull way (and you knew exactly what was going to be the final outcome). The killers, working for Worthington's character, were just not believable and came across as Red Neck numb-nuts. The entire film draws not one iota of plausible emotional factor from you, as there is nothing to give you shock, humour or excitement feelings. Its purely only bearable because of the presence of Lena Headey and the kid, Dean Scott Vazquez.

I give it a 5 star rating but 4 of them are for Lena and Dean. The other is for the debut directors presentation. Though I think it was poor for me it was - for a first time effort - nicely done; as believe me, I have seen a zillion times worse from newbie directors!

There is gun violence... There is a completely pointless sex scene; Lena is totally nude and shows breasts/nipples...

Touching well written script!
Arrowheadhealer9 May 2022
GiGi Gaston wrote and directed an entertaining movie that will touch home with a lot of us regarding second chances. Well casted, with top rate performances from Lena Headey, Sam Worthington and the young boy Dean Scott Vasquez. Takes your emotions on a ride as you cheer on the burlesque dancer Gypsy (Lena Headey) as she kicks in her inner strength to save her neighbors kid from her ex boyfriend (Bad Boy) Sam Worthington and his sometimes funny strong armed muscle. Emma Holzer has the best line of the movie and delivered it spot on! Enjoyable from beginning to end! Can't wait to see what writer, director GiGi Gaston has in store for us next!

It's a slow burn but at it's peak produces a sweet high making the whole watch a pleasant one. Even after all 9 bullets are fired movie still manages to breathe through experienced acting by a veteran cast and a story beyond just pistols and blood.

I tried to give it a go
grlym-4684930 April 2022
It was such a weak and slow production I gave up very early in the show.

I'm not sure it could have been salvaged. It just seems like a company had spare change to keep a low budget cable company full of shows to watch at 4am so the time slots are all full.
