If Angela (Joanne Froggatt) had an idyllic life. It did not last long in the first episode. Her husband Olivier (Michiel Huisman) lost his rag and beat her up.
From the prolific Williams Brothers, Angela Black is billed as a thriller. Her face is bruised, she gives her excuses to people who mention her face.
At the dog shelter where Angela volunteers, she feels compelled to unmuzzle a dangerous dog. Maybe the dog is a metaphor for her, she wants to roam freely.
Easier said than done. Ed Harrison (Samuel Adewunmi) is a private investigator hired by Olivier to dog up dirt on his wife. Harrison realises that it is Oliver who is in the wrong and tells Angela all about why he has been hired by her husband.
Oliver wants a divorce and custody of the children. It is a case of another drama involving a man who thinks he can balance a high pressure job and child care duties, this one has anger management issues to boot.
The opening episode does not show all its cards. If it was the case there is not enough here for 6 parts.
Angela needs to be wary of her husband and also get one over him. She looks for a divorce lawyer. The trouble is whether Harrison is all he claims to be, especially after his later claim about Oliver's latest plan.
Froggatt has done well in the past with psychological thrillers. This one had a lukewarm first episode and the later ones need to ramp up the tension.
