Meh
thejdrage22 July 2022
I saw the 9.1 stars (38 people) read all the rave reviews and then found out that most of the 10 stars were one review writers on IMDb. The reviews even sounded alike which was my first clue and why I looked. The other reviews seemed honest, so I think I jinxed myself and expected WAY too much of this movie.

First off - it has a lot gratuitous sex in it. I'm not a prude, but tossing in sex scenes on a formulaic schedule, ruins the flow of the thing.

The story is "second verse same as the first". You have seen this before, BUT it was well done by some really good actors.

I added a star for the supporting cast: Joseph Marcell and Nina Wadia. They were, and always are, awesome, no matter what parts they are playing.

Otherwise, 5 stars on a good day. I wish I had read a good book instead.

SPOILERS, Sex, Spies and Snapshots ...Eh
vkbyxwj13 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I agree with the "Meh" author from July 2022. I have absolutely no idea how most reviewers rated this movie a 10. Or 5+ It's a LIFETIME movie, at best and Lifetime is not my go-to channel to watch.

So ... married woman has an affair. He disappears and is presumed deceased, perhaps non-existent. Nope! He exists, then doesn't. Someone is murdered by a mysterious person in black and that event weirdly ties in with the missing lover and a stolen item. I figured out the ending at this point, but that couldn't be THAT obvious with all the 10s. That's all I'll give away. When it ends, you won't be too surprised. What's surprising is the characters' backstories change or are added mid-production. Then all the crazy is tied up at the end in one-big sloppy giftwrapping.

Regardless, it will keep you at the edge of your seat because you'll keep thinking "what has this to do with this story and why?"

Good story altogether but questionable plot
igbaniteen24 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
How did Troy get his hands on Isadora's necklace? Also Charlotte immediately assumed Tom was behind everything just because Tom gave her the necklace after Isadora's death, he could've seen the necklace among her stuff, she didn't bother to confirm how he got the necklace.

Also, I wonder why the lady occupying Ewan's apartment lied that she's been living there if she knew nothing of the scam that took place in her apartment, and she also recognised Tom when he entered her apartment to kill her.

Also after assuming he killed someone, Tom just hands the body to the nanny alone to dispose of, that is so dumb and poorly written just to have a happily ever after.

That was one of the worst....
therealjaysmoke22 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I thought this was going to be an interesting one to watch, now thinking about it, I don't know why I got that idea. Right from the beginning, I already didn't like it. The premise was just wrong. A married woman cheats on her successful, handsome and rich husband, and she actually gets away with it? On top of that, she's not even sorry nor grateful that the husband forgave her? How many men in his position will even waste time with such a woman!? And then they make her out to be the victim? She inherits the mother in law's will? How this was a bestselling book in the UK beats me.

The acting was not the best also, I didn't feel any connection with any of them, except for the black lady, funnily. And what kind of silly ending was that?? The moment they showed the playboy alive, I was done. Didn't even wait to see what happened next.

Don't waste your time.

It's a very familiar subject, but a mediocre movie
olcayozfirat17 October 2022
British thriller film produced in 2022. The film is about a woman who married an unstable but very rich man and tries to get rid of him. The man really wrote the book of repugnance. It's like a made-for-TV movie. Acting is very unprofessional. The script is very familiar. The worst part is that the mind of the viewer is being mocked. I'm sure the IMDB rating will drop as you watch. The best thing in the movie is the leading actress. I do not recommend the movie. For better ones, my suggestion would be "Unfaithful" and "Before I Go To Sleep".

There are no nudity or sexually explicit scenes in the movie.

The screenwriter lost 8 pages of the script and the director didn't see it when filming
hmeirellles7 December 2022
I'm extremely keen on watching all kinds of movies in all genres, and at last count I've watched around 30,000 movies. The truth is that this one had a good premise, but surely the screenwriter "forgot" to give some pages to the director and he didn't notice. Or else the editor received an unfair salary and "murdered" the film in the Final Cut ( sorry for the infamous joke ) The "Hitchcockian" touches excited me at first, until I realized it was a cheap copycat that didn't see all of the Master's work from Suspense. The plot has dozens of loose ends, the main actress confuses "indifference" (which she showed in the film) with "I'm confused about what's going on". Don't waste time watching, run away!

Great as a book bad as a movie
mkaouer11 November 2022
This movie says the example of why we should not transform each and every single successful book into a movie. I can see how this story would fly in a book, as it resembles to a fairy tale. It's transformation into a movie made it unrealistic. It is really a very slow burn with fewer characters and easily predictable outcomes. We are in 2022, and defining good and bad character since second one is not definitely a good idea. Even the good one, she is jumping into someone else's bed the moment she gets the opportunity to, setting the example of someone who could easily cheat and mislead then expect people to be okay with it. Besides that, the movie is flawed with some unrealistic scenes but still, it is watchable if you truly want to kill some time.

Confused by the bad reviews
simon-mackay3 September 2022
The film is a 15 there are no "gratuitous sex scenes" in fact the sex in this film is some of the least "risqué" i've seen in a long time. You see more in "Emily in paris" or "Sex education" on netflix.

The film itself is a really good British story, acted very well by the actors and delivered in a good pacing. There where a few moments where as a viewer you would yell in your head! "call the police" but these moments i guess are to help drive along the plot.

There is a trigger warning i must offer that if you are affected by domestic violence there are scenes in this that are very well done and realistic and although kept in as good a taste as possible, i can certainly see how someone may be triggered by it.

Over all it was well written, well acted, well edited, FANSTASTIC score and music on all scenes. The Pacing lost itself but the ending was strong with an almost "post credits" type ending.

I am recommending to friends to watch to discuss as its been a while in a sea of blockbusters to find a little gem to talk around the table with a glass of wine!

Strong start but went downhill quickly
marke-3955428 March 2024
The acting is fine but the plot, the script and the twists are all rather disappointing. It tried too hard and had too many plot holes. Unfortunately it just made me cringe by the end. The twists were not very surprising apart from some in their silliness. I would like to be more charitable but I can't find any redeeming qualities to complete this review with applause.

Having said that, the settings were good with some grandiose locations.

Maybe if the plot had been tweaked a little to make everything more credible (I won't give examples to avoid giving away any aspects of the story) then I might have been able to give it a better score.

Enjoyed it
Henry56785 September 2022
Loved the book and so was anxious to see how the film had been adapted....and thankfully really liked it, good acting in the main from Samantha Bond, Emily Berrington and Ben Lloyd Hughes ( only just realised knew him from 'Me Before You' ) very atmospheric, the houses used are amazing, truly amazing, my eyes were all over looking at the things especially in the Manor House, location wise was very watchable and recognised a lot of places, there were unexpected twists in it ( for my other half who hadn't read the book! ) all in all a really good psychological thriller which am pleased stayed very close to the original book.

British Lifetime Movie
gab-6759917 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The lead was just so pretty, even her mole could not distract how beautiful she was to just watch. Now as far as acting goes, this was a good (But predictable) story that I swear I have seen before. Nothing new or special, but definitely not a time waster. They really messed up at the end, the shirtless hot guy lives and everyone is happy was just too nice of a bow tie. Even though you could predict who the killer was, it was still an interesting ride. Oh, the sex scenes were a bit over the top, so I recommend not watching it around any kids.

A chick-flick, just not what you would expect.
outofvogue182 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The regular chick-flicks are romantic comedies, this isn't. That fact helps the idea of the film, but it doesn't make it great. The story works, it just has so many flaws in the writing, that it doesn't come across as believable.

I like the beginning, the idea of what's happening works, it's just the situations for the in-between that seem confusing. If the writer didn't know about how things would end, that would be one thing. However, in my opinion, the writer knew about the ending and just didn't care to rewrite the middle parts.

It is really that bad, though it wouldn't be if the writer cared.

Poundland Before I Go To Sleep
yudhabagaskara18 November 2023
I've seen Before I Go To Sleep so many times and I just realized that the plot is quite familiar despite having a slightly different setting, backgrounds and motives (the aforementioned film is based on the novel as well). An unhappy married couple, a woman wants to get away with it and uninspiring way to end her misery. That's basically Before I Go To Sleep with wealthy backgrounds, mother in-law intervention and witnessing a crime scene. No big names who starred in this film bar the mother in-law who was Miss Moneypenny in Brosnan-era Bond film. Finding out that the leads are actually married in real life while being abusive and manipulative in this film feels so surreal.

Expect this to be a UK hit since it is based off a hit book
jrneptune20 July 2022
Samantha Lee Howe wrote the book the movie is based from which has the same name along with the screenplay apparently even though she is not credited for it.

The writer specialty is Thrillers and claims it is based from a true story which I am still trying to find out what actual story. Either way it hit a nerve especially with women.

It did have some twists that I did not expect along the way and who doesn't like seeing the wealthy having to bicker?

Worth the read or the watch especially if you enjoyed the book.

Definitely one to watch
Emma_1-694-8221946 September 2022
I absolutely loved the book, was excited to watch the film and it did not disappoint.

Edge of seat scenes, great use of colours on every scene , loved the locations.

Cast : Ben Lloyd Hughes played Tom to perfection, charismatic boss had everyone eating out of his hand , husband- loving one minute but can turn on a sixpence.

Emily Berrington is a great actress , she showed us Charlotte as a conflicted wife, we all understood her vulnerability , loyalty and strength.

Samantha Bond was fantastic as the matriarch , we saw her strength and her worries.

All the cast were amazing , lots of twists and turns . Definitely one to watch.

Loved the book, loved the film
chrissielaa6 September 2022
So I have now finished watching "The Stranger in Our Bed". Very impressive might I say.

Charlotte was exactly how I imagined her reading the book. Tom, wasn't how I imagined, but he made it work to be honest. Samantha Bond, love her as an actress, played the role of Isadora really well. Ewan aka Daniel was a treat for the eyes lol, definitely imagined him right. Stefan and Mrs Tanner, definitely the right actor and actress to play those roles. Really nice to see Terri Dwyer play the role of Becky, really suited the role.

Well done to Giles Anderson for directing the film, brilliant job.

Had everything I needed from the book, and didn't drag in any way.

Thank you so much Samantha Lee Howe for writing the book, and bring it to life!

Loved your cameo with David J Howe, brilliant!

Honest opinion I agree with Karen Woodham from Blazing Minds, and would give it a 4 out of 5 myself.

Anyone that's interested please go and read the book of "The Stranger in our bed", I did a review of the book, and the review can be found on Blazing Minds website. Then watch the film, came out yesterday, and can be found on Amazon.

Great little thirller
spacemangeorge7 September 2022
This is a great little thriller that surprised me. I watched with my wife on Showtime but I wasn't sure it was for me. From the start I was gripped though. We are both Sanditon fans and watched because Ben Lloyd-Hughes was in it. Very different role for him and nice chemistry as he played opposite Emily Berrington.

Lots to like about this film, it has a noir feel and was slick and looked beautiful. The scenery was a spectacle and my wife in particular enjoyed seeing the British manor house.

I won't include any spoilers but there a quite a few twists and turns that keep you guessing.

So, highly recommended from us and I'm now very curious about the book too.

Fantastic Thriller!
janicematthey22 September 2022
Where to start without sounding like a paid endorsement?

It really is that good!

Do not be fooled in thinking the start of the movie gives away the ending, it certainly does not!

Emily Berrington and Ben Lloyd-Hughes brilliant and convincing leads - absolutely no typecasting to compare them to any non thriller previous roles. They absolutely nailed the tension, suspense and drama at every turn. The rest of the cast obviously fed off their energy and it would be wrong to just single out one or two without feeling you were doing the rest a disservice by not mentioning them by name.

Not my usual genre, but the casting made me want to take a look and I wasn't disappointed. Script was written by Samantha Lee Howe who apparently wrote the book, and the actors took hold of it, and we all went along on an intriguing and harrowing journey.

This movie kept you guessing and just when you thought you knew who and what... it twisted on an edge again and had you hooked, before deviating again.

Locations perfect, it was all beautifully constructed from the direction to cinematography to editing.

How they managed to create something this good in the middle of a pandemic is an amazing achievement in itself.

9/10 - Nothing can be truly perfect? Knocking off one star... IDK... it could it have been longer? Was there more in the book they could have included because I really wanted there to be more! Not saying I think they missed anything - the story was definitely well told, just really enjoyed the tension and for once I hadn't worked out straight away what would happen.

Definitely left me with a 'oh wow...' feeling at the end.

Highly recommended viewing!

A Tidy Little Thriller
hoodie-3847120 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A good, independent film, shot during the pandemic. The actors are excellent. Emily Berrington plays an abused wife finding her power quite well - sometime looking befuddled and at other times angry.

Lloyd-Hughes has a lot of subtlety in his performance as the hot and cold, abusive husband. Samantha Bond is able to imply backstory for her character that is not in the movie through her depiction of emotions.

Interestingly, the movie does not try to keep you guessing - you will probably have it figured out half-way through, but the main character does not have it figured out and there-in lies the suspense. Worth watching if you like the genre.

A good British thriller
paulhowardhunt-1344026 September 2022
This was the perfect film for an autumnal night in. It has mystery, intrigue, threat and some neat visuals. I particularly liked the climax where the lighting switches in the dark room as the mystery unfolds (without giving too much away).

It was intriguing to see the machinations of the wealthy play out on screen as a force for evil, using their wealth and privilege to toy with Charlotte, her lover's family and their staff. Each plot turn made you dislike them more, building up the suspense and the inevitable joy of seeing them get their comeuppance.

Ben Lloyd-Hughes plays well-to-do creep very well, portraying the abusive husband's switch between threatening and placation/bargaining excellently.

Great for a night in front of the fire and a bottle of wine.

Kept me guessing!
maryeross-8292320 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not usually one for thrillers but I loved this movie and it's ability to keep me guessing til the end!

First off, the lead actors, Ben Lloyd-Hughes and Emily Berrington, did a fantastic job!

Ben Lloyd-Hughes did a stellar job of portraying just the right amount of creepy that most women would probably brush off, just as Charlotte did.

The cinematography was amazing! I also loved how different colors were used for different characters. The particular use of color in the dark room scene, paired with the score, was spectacular! So chilling!

All around great film that keeps you engaged throughout!

Keeps you guessing, twisted, and surprising
reeseou-1316121 July 2022
I was not only entertained by this movie, but impressed by the performances by the two leads. Emily Barrington and Ben Lloyd-Huges were fantastic. This was my first time viewing Barrington in something but have seen Lloyd-Hughes in a few projects now. How he can embody a character is impressive. He pulls me in and I forget there's an actor behind all the madness. I'm so used to falling in love with the character he portrays but in The Stranger in Our Bed I was terrified, not just by seeing him in a new role, but the twist and turns that you do not see coming. I did not read the book but the story was fantastic, easy to follow but completely surprising!
