Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones” is primed for a big night at this year’s Emmys. Adapted from the Georgia Hunter‘s 2017 book of the same name, the limited series follows the Kurcs, a Polish Jewish family who were split apart during World War II: some members go into hiding and others are forced into concentration camps. The series, brutal and dark, follows the family’s attempts to reunite after the war ends. It’s a tough watch but a vital one and the series, created by Erica Lipez, is intelligent in its portrayal of such hard subject matter, as noted by critics.
Aramide Tinubu (Variety) stated: “Devastating, and profoundly moving, ‘We Were the Lucky Ones’ illustrates the scope of World War II, the inhumanity of others and the anguish of disconnection and loss.”
Matthew Gilbert (Boston Globe) observed: “Yes, the miniseries is challenging, and steeped in heartbreak,...

Apple TV+ is sure to perform well at this year’s Emmys with a number of shows strongly positioned including “Lessons in Chemistry,” “Sugar,” “Manhunt,” “The New Look,” and “Masters of the Air.” Well, add in another limited series to that mix — the historical drama “Franklin,” starring Oscar-winner Michael Douglas as the titular Benjamin Franklin.
The show chronicles Franklin’s eight years in France, wherein he attempted to convince King Louis XVI (Tom Pezier) to support the colonies in the American Revolutionary War. The series, as you’d expect, features fabulous costumes, sets, and hair and makeup. It is anchored by a powerhouse performance from Douglas, whose take on Franklin is a more modern one. The show is all the more entertaining for it, as noted by critics.
Michael Starr (New York Post) stated: “My advice is to sit back and enjoy Douglas as he admirably chews the scenery and...

Tobias Menzies has become one of our most reliably excellent actors of late. Classically trained, he had an extensive theatre career in his native England during the noughties and early 2010s before he rose to prominence with roles in “Game of Thrones” and “Outlander.”
Menzies’ profile then increased further thanks to his lauded portrayal of Prince Phillip in “The Crown” and his stock has again risen thanks to his role as another major historical figure in Apple TV’s “Manhunt.” The acclaimed limited series follows the death of President Abraham Lincoln (played by Hamish Linklater) and the subsequent 12-day manhunt for assassin John Wilkes Booth (Anthony Boyle).
Menzies stars as Edwin Stanton, the Secretary of State and personal friend of Lincoln who headed up the hunt for Booth. Menzies proves himself capable of carrying this compelling show entirely on his own. His complex, gruff portrayal of Stanton is what makes the series soar,...

Awkwafina rose to fame with her idiosyncratic, trademark comedic stylings. Then she wowed us all with her against-type performance in Lulu Wang‘s “The Farewell,” which very nearly earned her an Oscar nomination back in 2019. She delivers another quiet, subdued role in the Hulu telefilm “Quiz Lady,” which could well reap her a career-first Emmy bid for acting.
Awkwafina plays the reserved Anne, who must compete on the game show she is obsessed with alongside her loud, abrasive, estranged sister Jenny (Sandra Oh) in order to pay off their mom’s gambling debts. The result is a heartwarming comedy that is one of the sweet treats of the year. Critics loved the movie and singled out Awkafina for particular praise.
Tania Hussain (Collider) exclaimed: “While Awkwafina has shown audiences a whacky, often one-dimensional side in some of her roles like the sitcom ‘Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens,’ she is able...

Pamela Anderson is dressing up for Naked Gun.
The actor has signed on to star opposite Liam Neeson in Paramount Pictures’ untitled remake of Naked Gun, based on the crime spoof comedies that were released in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Akiva Schaffer is directing the comedy, which has a script by Dan Gregor, Doug Mand and Schaffer. The trio were behind the popular and Emmy-winning Disney+ movie Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers.
The original movie, written and directed by Jerry Zucker, Jim Abrahams and David Zucker and based on their television series Police Squad! that lasted only six episodes, spoofed the tropes of police shows and films that had ingrained themselves into audience’s minds over the decades. It centered on an inept and clueless detective named Frank Drebin, played by Leslie Nielsen, who still somehow managed to solve the crime and save the day.

Sebastian Stan is continuing to be a master of disguise.
After portraying Tommy Lee in Hulu series “Pam and Tommy” and transforming via prosthetics for “A Different Man,” Stan is now taking on the role of a lifetime: Donald Trump. Stan leads “The Apprentice,” directed by “Border” and “Holy Spider” filmmaker Ali Abbasi from a script by Gabe Sherman.
“The Apprentice” is debuting at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in competition alongside buzzy features like Paul Schrader’s “Oh, Canada,” Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Kinds of Kindness,” Paolo Sorrentino’s “Parthenope,” and David Cronenberg’s “The Shrouds.”
“The Apprentice” centers on Trump’s (Stan) rise to fame following what the official description calls a “Faustian deal” with right-wing lawyer Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong). Say what you will about superhero fatigue in recent months, but there's no denying that James Gunn is assembling quite a list of talent for his new DC Universe. Even though he's right in the middle of filming for "Superman", that hasn't stopped him and co-ceo Peter Safran from looking to the future for another superhero movie coming down the pipeline. After news broke earlier this year that "House of the Dragon" star Millie Alcock would be suiting up as Superman's superpowered cousin, the upcoming "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" film now has its director. That's maybe not the order of hiring we'd usually expect to see, but welcome to franchise filmmaking, folks!
According to Deadline, none other than "I, Tonya" director Craig Gillespie is currently "in talks" to helm "Supergirl." Film enthusiasts likely know him for 2007's Ryan Gosling-starring "Lars and the Real Girl" and Margot Robbie's Oscar-nominated performance in "I, Tonya,...

Showtime’s “Fellow Travelers” depicts a sweeping, complex romance across the ages in one of the most acclaimed pieces of television this year. Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey are the couple in question and both men are at the top of their game here.
Bomer has always been a commanding performer, capturing viewers’ attention every moment he’s on-screen. As the closeted Hawk Fuller, he delivers a performance of vulnerability and restraint. Critics agree, it’s some of his best work.
Ben Travers (Indie Wire) observed: “Bomer and Bailey deserve all the credit coming their way for building such palpable chemistry…. Bomer’s stoic restraint proves his strongest attribute. Hawk, quite literally, is cleaner cut than a Kennedy (Bobby makes a brief appearance), and Bomer wears his classic Wasp exterior like a slightly too-snug Halloween costume. He can smile for the cameras, but there’s something tugging at the corners,...

“Mary & George” is the delicious new historical drama from British playwright D.C. Moore, who swaps out stuffy history lessons for a raucous, bawdy ride that fans of “The Favourite” will love. Like that Oscar-winning movie, this limited series on Starz focuses on an era of British royalty that is little-known to American audiences.
Julianne Moore plays the Countess of Buckingham, who groomed her son (Nicholas Galitzine) to seduce King James I (Tony Curran) in an attempt to curry favor, power, titles, and riches in 1600s England. In the titular role of Mary, Moore delivers another powerhouse performance. She owns every scene she’s in and proves once more why she is one of the best actresses working today. Critics agree, “Mary & George” is the Moore show.

The first three seasons of FX’s “Fargo” were embraced by the Emmys, racking up loads of nominations including for Best Limited Series. However, season four broke that pattern as critics and viewers alike came away largely disappointed by the series — it didn’t quite match up to the heights of the first three entries.
But “Fargo” season five look like it will get the show back in the Emmy spotlight. The season is set in Minnesota and North Dakota in 2019 and tells the story of Juno Temple as a midwestern housewife plunged into dangers she thought were firmly in her past. Jon Hamm delivers a change-of-pace performance as a sheriff while Jennifer Jason Leigh turns in a wildly entertaining performance. Critics agree, this fifth season is a return to form.
Dan Eivar (Financial Times) observed: “The show’s masterful, suspense-ratcheting approach to action sequences is matched by its assured writing and considered character work.

The delicious “Mary & George” may well serve up a feast of Emmy nominations. This limited series on Starz stars Julianne Moore as the Countess of Buckingham, who groomed her son, George Villiers (Nicholas Galitzine), to seduce King James I (Tony Curran). The Countess uses her son as a pawn to scheme her way to riches, titles, and influence in 1600s England.
The series, adapted by award-winning playwright D.C. Moore from Benjamin Woolley’s bestseller “The King’s Assassin,” is a sumptuous period drama. The show is in the same vein as Yorgos Lanthimos‘ Oscar-winning “The Favourite,” swapping out the usual stuffy nature of such fare for a raucous, romp through history.
Moore, who won the Best Actress Oscar in 2015 for “Still Alice,” is on reliably good form here. She chews up every scene and commands the screen with authority. Galitzine, meanwhile, proves he is more than just the most...

Over the past decade, Lily James has distinguished herself by building one of the most varied resumes as any film actor her age. After getting her start on British television, James first became known to American audiences in 2012 when she joined the cast of “Downton Abbey” as the love-struck Lady Rose MacClare, a role that earned James two Screen Actors Guild Awards as a member of the show’s ensemble cast.
The actress quickly followed up that television triumph with one on the big screen in the title role of Disney’s live-action “Cinderella,” directed by Kenneth Branagh, which clearly proved her appeal to audiences of all ages. One of the most reliable screen presences in recent years, James showed enormous range in choosing her projects, from such crowd pleasers as “Baby Driver” and “Mamma Mia! In early 2021, Megan Ellison emerged from a self-imposed Hollywood exile and did something she hadn’t done in over a year: She signed on to back a movie, Nimona. There was a time when this would not have been remarkable, when Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures was producing five films a year and she was considered the industry’s own Medici, the premier patron of prestige cinema. But Ellison had backed away from Hollywood in 2019 after a series of missteps and become elusive even to some of her own executives. When her former distribution chief, Erik Lomis, asked her whether she wanted to look at some reels of Nimona, which was about to get axed in Disney’s closure of Blue Sky Animation, “I wasn’t really engaging in new film projects at the time,” Ellison said, answering THR’s questions by email. “But being curious, I said yes.”

1980s television series Baywatch is getting the reboot treatment at Fox, and here are the details of the new show.
Baywatch is perennialy parodied in mainstream media. Whether it’s the melodramatic scripts or the iconic slow motion running, with the show became a byword for televisual cheese. Perhaps most memorably, it featured as a major plot point in 2006 film Borat, as the title character becomes infatuated with Pamela Anderson. It also formed part of 2019 Disney+ drama Pam And Tommy, which saw Lily James play Anderson as she deals with sexism on the Baywatch set
Nevertheless, the show was and remains hugely popular, launching the global careers of Pamela Anderson and David Hasselhoff. It followed a group of lifeguards as they patrol the beaches of LA County, and was sold right around the globe.

The Sundance Film Festival on Sunday night hosted the world premiere of Aaron Schimberg’s A Different Man starring Sebastian Stan, Adam Pearson and The Worst Person in the World breakout Renate Reinsve in her first American film.
Stan toplines the A24 release as an aspiring actor, Edward, who undergoes a radical medical procedure to drastically transform his appearance. But a new face turns into a nightmare when it causes him to lose a dream role he was born to play when the playwright/object of his affections, Reinsve, replaces him with someone who looks nearly identical to his former self, Pearson, a man with a disfigured face.
As for Pearson, he lives with neurofibromatosis (type 1), a rare genetic condition that causes excess body tissue to grow predominantly on his face. The condition fuels the plot of A Different Man and the actor, Pearson, actually inspired the film after having...

Hot off his first Emmy win, Nick Offerman will pop up on The Conners when the ABC sitcom returns for Season 6 on February 7. Offerman appears to be playing an author, judging by the book Jay R. Is it too soon for a movie about Donald Trump? Frankly, if I never see the 45th U.S. President's face again it'll be too soon, but it's not surprising that after filmmakers have spent the past several years filling their projects with Trump-like allegorical figures, someone would finally bite the bullet and make a full-on biopic. The upcoming film "The Apprentice" sounds more like a snapshot of the political figure's life than a complete biographical account, but it'll no doubt stir up plenty of intrigue regardless – especially when it plans to include other headline-grabbing names like Ivana Trump and Roy Cohn.
While "The Apprentice" won't be hitting theaters in time for award season, it's still a fascinating project worth keeping an eye on. Any initial ick you might get about the idea of Trump as a protagonist may be tempered by the project director's unique filmography and the eclectic,...

Over the course of its 50-year existence, Troma has helped launch the careers of filmmakers like Trey Parker & Matt Stone (South Park), James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Eli Roth (Hostel), along with countless actors who went on to long careers, but their biggest export by any internal metric — financial success, brand recognition, franchisability, fan base — is 1984’s The Toxic Avenger.
The film is preceded by an “extreme violence” warning. The gore is indeed graphic — the first kill features a kid’s head being run over by a car, firmly establishing that no one is safe and nothing is off limits — but it could use about a dozen more trigger warnings by today’s standards. If you can be offended, you will be offended by the boundary-pushing content that includes (but is certainly not limited to) racism, homophobia, ableism, and sexual misconduct — yet there is substance behind the sleaze.

Pamela Anderson loves love. Throughout the years, the "Baywatch" star and former Playboy model has romanced her fair share of suitors and tied the knot with five men - including repeat marriages with Rick Salomon. "I'm a hopeless romantic and I do believe in [love] . . . I love traditional marriage," Anderson once said on "The Wendy Williams Show" in 2016.

During the pandemic, a few key events were truly collective experiences as there was little else to do but observe what was happening. One of the biggest examples was the GameStop stock situation, which sent Wall Street into a frenzy and received global news coverage for weeks on end. The whole thing has now been documented in the upcoming film "Dumb Money," which hails from director Craig Gillespie ("Pam & Tommy"). It turns out, Gillespie had an intense, first-hand experience with the whole "meme stock" saga.
The filmmaker recently spoke with People about the film, which is currently in limited release before expanding wide over the next couple of weeks. During the conversation, Gillespie explained that one of his sons actually got involved in the whole GameStop stock situation after a YouTuber named Roaring Kitty and a Reddit page called WallStreetBets got a bunch of average Joes to drive the company's stock through the roof.

Ever since he starred in "Captain America: Civil War," Sebastian Stan has been a fan favorite. Of course, he'd already won his fair share of hearts thanks to his role as Carter Baizen in "Gossip Girl," but the Marvel feature catapulted him to a new level of fame. In recent years, he's continued to build on his Marvel success by starring in Disney+'s "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier." He also starred alongside Lily James in the Hulu miniseries "Pam & Tommy," which chronicled Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee's turbulent romance, which netted him a Golden Globes nomination in 2023.
In addition to gaining the adoration of many fans over the course of his career, he has also caught the eye of quite a few Hollywood stars over the years. You might remember he dated Leighton Meester back in his "Gossip Girl" days, but she's not the only costar he's fallen for.

Venice Film Festival artistic director Alberto Barbera is adamant about his decision to place six Italian movies in this year’s 23-title festival lineup. “Nobody accused the French of chauvinism because they had seven French films in competition in Cannes this year,” Barbera quipped to a snarky Italian reporter when the Venice lineup was announced in July, though he did concede, “It’s true that in the past I have not done this.” Indeed, Barbera’s previous limit on Italian movies in competition for the Golden Lion was five titles last year, which some local critics considered a stretch.
More importantly, the Venice chief pointed out that he presently sees Cinema Italiano at a particularly favorable juncture largely thanks to the fact that Italians are making movies with bigger budgets, “which means greater quality and the ability to compete in international markets, and to travel beyond our borders,” he said.

Los Angeles, Aug 18 (Ians) Actress Pamela Anderson has embraced a fresh-faced beauty style in recent years, and she has found it to be really “freeing”.
Speaking to Elle about her style, she explained, “I think we all start looking a little funny when we get older. And I’m kind of laughing at myself when I look at the mirror. I go, ‘Wow, this is really … what’s happening to me?’ It’s a journey.”
Despite this, Pamela said to being in a “good place” at the moment. The ‘Baywatch’ star, who became a global sex symbol in the 90s, shared, “I feel rooted for. I feel good. I’m in a good place.”
Earlier this year, meanwhile, Pamela hit out at the makers of ‘Pam & Tommy’, reports aceshowbiz.com.

Before working on “Pamela, a love story,” director Ryan White admits that there was no one more skeptical about making a Pamela Anderson documentary than him. “I think that’s because, like a lot of people, I had all of these preconceived notions about who Pamela Anderson is or who she would be today and I wasn’t really interested in being a part of that story,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent Meet the Experts: TV Documentary panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). All of that changed for White when he got the chance to have a Zoom session with Anderson. “I was so fascinated with who she appeared to be in this little box in front of me and I thought, ‘Wow. If I’m this surprised right now, if we could show an audience who this woman really is, that could be the recipe for a great documentary.
