Nicolas Winding Refn’s next feature is taking shape.
“Her Private Hell,” announced by Neon, is set to star Charles Melton, Sophie Thatcher, Kristine Froseth and Havana Rose Liu.
Little else is known about the project from the director of “Drive,” “Only God Forgives” and “Bronson,” with Neon’s cryptic message on social media merely naming the cast and describing it as “something groovy.”
Whatever “Her Private Hell” is, it would mark Refn’s first full feature since 2016’s “The Neon Demon,” with the director having since focussed on TV with “Too Old to Die Young” at Amazon and Netflix series “Copenhagen Cowboy.”

The assumed “rivalry” between A24 and Neon has finally been dispelled — and it’s actually Netflix that Neon counts as their “biggest competitor” for acquisition titles.
Neon founder and CEO Tom Quinn told Variety that his studio tried to purchase recent Netflix hits such as Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man,” Todd Haynes’ “May December,” and Chloe Domont’s Sundance breakout “Fair Play.” In turn, Netflix previously tried to lock down “I, Tonya” and “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” which were both award-winning Neon releases.
Quinn detailed how it was Netflix, and not fellow indie studio A24, that turned out to be the main competition.
“The industry thinks there’s a rivalry [between Neon and A24], and there’s not,” Quinn said. “It’s good headlines. I thought they might be our biggest competitor. But as it turns out, our biggest competitor has been Netflix. They desperately tried to beat us to buy ‘I, Tonya...

In the run-up to the Academy Awards, Neon took a unique approach to scoring the season’s top prize for “Anora.” While other studios spent their money on tried-and-true strategies, from tastemaker screenings to glossy ads, Neon pulled up a tow truck in front of a Los Angeles auto body shop for a pop-up “Anora” merchandise sale in November — complete with branded T-shirts and thongs. Some 300 fans queued up before the vehicle even arrived. And for its first screening of the film about a Brooklyn escort who marries a Russian oligarch’s kid, the boutique distributor filled the audience with sex workers rather than Oscar voters.
“We follow the beat of our own drum,” says Tom Quinn, Neon’s CEO. “The idea of pandering to the campaign as opposed to being who you are as a film is a big, stark difference. We never play to the campaign. We always play to the film,...

Before securing the role of Data on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," actor Brent Spiner was perhaps most widely recognized for his recurring role as Bob Wheeler on the sitcom "Night Court." He also had one-shot appearances on various other hit TV shows like "Tales from the Darkside," "The Paper Chase," and "Ryan's Hope." He also had a bit part in the excellent cult musical "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains" and was one of the background students in "Grease 2." Spiner had been acting in Broadway productions throughout the 1970s.
Data was a boon to his career, making him a household name, and giving him a role that he would continue to revisit for decades. Spiner has always felt ambivalent about Data, however, loving the fame, but resenting how he had been typecast. He has since referred to Data as a double-edged sword. That said, his post-"Star Trek...

Netflix has emerged victorious in the bidding war for Lena Dunham’s new rom-com “Good Sex,” starring Natalie Portman.
The film was revealed to buyers at last month’s European Film Market by CAA Media Finance and FilmNation, and Netflix is now closing a worldwide deal around the $55 million mark — one of the largest to ever emerge from EFM.
“Girls” creator Dunham is set to write and direct “Good Sex,” which stars Portman as couple’s therapist Ally, who rejoins New York’s dating scene in her 40s after a decade-long relationship. “But Ally finds her life pulled in opposing directions as she falls into a steamy fling with a 20-something Brooklyn hipster just as she begins a promising, more conventional relationship with Alan, a successful 50-something in Manhattan,” the film’s synopsis reads. “As a romantic crossroads blossoms into a full-blown identity crisis, Ally juggles to keep these two...

The nominations announcement of the PGA Awards 2025 made for a tough morning for the “Nickel Boys” and “Sing Sing” Oscar campaigns in particular.
Because the Producers Guild of America uses the same system as the Academy to determine its nominees for Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures — a preferential ballot with 10 slots— it is seen overall as the most accurate precursor for Best Picture. In fact, its nominees completely mirrored what the Best Picture nominees were in 2024.
Have things really changed that much between now and December, when the winners of the AFI Awards were announced? In recent years that awards body has been almost as accurate at predicting the final 10 Best Picture nominees, often only leaving out the international titles. For example, the American Film Institute had “May December” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” last year instead of eventual nominees “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest,...

Charles Melton's critically acclaimed performance in "May December" put Hollywood on notice, and since then, he's been on the rise, with a number of other high-profile projects on the horizon. He's now set to star in the upcoming Alex Garland film "Warfare" alongside the likes of Cosmo Jarvis and D'Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai, and is also slated to appear in the Elizabeth Olsen film "Love Child" and season 2 of Netflix's "Beef." With so many major roles coming up, it's easy to forget that Melton wasn't even the first choice to play Reggie Mantle on "Riverdale," the role that began his onscreen ascension.
In the show's first season, Reggie was played by Ross Butler, a veteran of teen drama shows who left "Riverdale" to focus more on his "13 Reasons Why" role as Zach Dempsey. "We love what Ross did with the role of Reggie [this season], but because of his commitments to other projects,...

On Thursday, the American Film Institute made its selection of the top 10 films and TV shows of the 2024 calendar year. The AFI Awards list includes Oscar frontrunners like Neon’s “Anora” and A24’s “The Brutalist,” and hot new small-screen favorites like HBO’s “The Penguin” and FX’s “Shōgun.” Did Your favorite projects make the cut? See the full lists below.
Among the acclaimed movies that were passed over this year are “September 5,” “Gladiator II,” and “The Substance.”
Some of the notable overlooked television programs include “Slow Horses,” “Only Murders in the Building,” and “Ripley.”

American director, screenwriter and producer Todd Haynes has been named president of the international jury of the 75th Berlin International Film Festival. The Berlinale diamond jubilee (a 75th anniversary) will take place from February 13-23, 2025.
”Todd Haynes is a dazzlingly gifted writer and director with an impressive range; his body of work is at once stylistically versatile but also unmistakably his,” Berlinale Director Tricia Tuttle said in a Thursday statement. “Ever since his debut feature ‘Poison’ won the Teddy Award in 1991, the Berlinale has followed and loved his filmmaking, and we are overjoyed to have him join the festival as the President of the International Jury for our 75th edition.”

In the past few years, there have been multiple documentaries and docuseries revisiting high-profile cases long after the fact: Lorena Bobbitt (“Lorena”), the Menendez Brothers (“Menendez & Menudo: Boys Betrayed”), JonBenét Ramsey (“JonBenét Ramsey: What Really Happened?”), Casey Anthony (“Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies”), Jared Vogel (“Jared from Subway: Catching a Monster”), boy band creator Lou Perlman (“Dirty Pop”), Brian Peck (“Quiet on the Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV”), Sherri Papini (“The Perfect Wife”), and Gypsy Rose Blanchard (“The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard”), just to name a few. Legendary Television has acquired the rights to the Anna Dorn novel “Perfume & Pain” with Clea DuVall set to write and direct, Variety has learned exclusively.
The book is described as a “a sexy and twisted character drama following a hopelessly romantic and equally reckless sapphic novelist on the verge of superstardom and simultaneously total self-destruction – depending which way the wind blows and what pill she pops next. Astrid will need to write her own deliverance into healing, true love, and success… before she succumbs to the vices that threaten to tear her apart.”
The book was originally published in the U.S. on May 21 by Simon & Schuster. Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler will produce under their Killer Films banner.
Dorn’s other works include “Exalted,” “Bad Lawyer,” and “Vagablonde.” Her next novel, “American Spirits,” is forthcoming from Simon & Schuster. She is repped by Gersh and Sanford J. Greenburger Associates for publishing.

A ’60s-set psychodrama about a pair of suburban housewives whose friendship goes haywire — and then some — after one of their children dies in a freak accident, the misconceived but morbidly entertaining “Mothers’ Instinct” is far too slapdash to respect the seriousness of its premise, but at the same time also far too serious to indulge in the campiness of its plot. The result is a movie that’s a little fucked up, a little fun, and mostly just very, very sad in a way that it doesn’t have the heart to explore.
Alice is the fragile one, at least at first. A crumbling eggshell of a woman who’s just been glued back together by the most discrete male psychiatrists in all of Mayberry, she can hardly make breakfast for her seven- or eight-year-old son Theo (Eamon O’Connell) without threatening to flake apart from the pressure to keep up appearances.

“May December” is a drama movie directed by Todd Haynes starring Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore.
“May December” is a cinematic gem that impresses critics and movie enthusiasts alike with brilliant performances from two of the industry’s leading actresses, a complex screenplay, stunning cinematography, a talented supporting cast, and a director who knows how to weave all elements into a special masterpiece. Rooted in the realms of discontent and deconstructed characters, the film explores the art of acting and self-discovery through the creation of a character.
Elisabeth, portrayed by Natalie Portman, is a well-known television actress preparing to play Gracie, a character played by Julianne Moore, a woman who ends up in jail for having an affair with a thirteen-year-old boy, Joe Yoo. Years after being released from prison, Joe and Gracie have a son and lead a serene life in Savannah.

Romance is complicated. The meshing together of two or more people isn’t designed to be a smooth process and art has reflected that for generations, most recently in the new rom-com “A Family Affair.” In honor of the film dropping, IndieWire has compiled a list of the best age-gap romance films to enjoy after watching Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron’s jaunt within the genre. From writer Carrie Solomon and “P.S. I Love You” director Richard Lagravenese, “A Family Affair” follows a self-absorbed movie star (Efron) who ends up in a whirlwind Hollywood romance with the relatively older mom (Kidman) of his 24 year-old assistant (Joey King). Efron returns to full heartthrob mode following a dark, dramatic turn in “The Iron Claw” and reunites with his “Paperboy” co-star to charming results.
In addition to his directorial work, Lagravenese is also known for his romantic screenwriting work with “The Bridges of Madison County...

Todd Haynes has been set as writer and director of “Trust,” a limited series starring Kate Winslet that is currently in development at HBO. Jon Raymond will co-write the project, and both serve as executive producers.
The official logline reads, “In a story told from multiple, competing perspectives, a 1920s Wall Street tycoon amasses a sudden fortune but loses a beloved wife. Decades later, his attempts to control the narrative of his life are undone by a biographer who uncovers the ultimate secrets of the legendary marriage.
The series is based on the novel of the same name by Hernan Diaz, which in 2023 won a Pulitzer Prize. Diaz and Winslet both executive produce alongside Haynes and Raymond, as do Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler for Killer Films.

ReFrame and IMDbPro have announced that 29 out of the 100 most popular films of 2023 have received the ReFrame “stamp” for gender-balanced productions. Some of these titles include “Barbie,” “Anyone But You,” “Flamin’ Hot,” “May December,” “Nyad,” “Past Lives,” “Saltburn” and “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.”
The newly released report came with other key findings. 19 out of the top 100 films this past year were directed by women and one was directed by a non-binary person, an increase from 14 women directors in 2022. Of said films, nine were directed by women of color; only two were directed by women of color in 2022. Furthermore, 17 women were hired as visual effects supervisors, a significant increase from 8 in 2022. While seven films hired women cinematographers in 2022, there were only three in 2023, making director of photography the most male-occupied role. Following this, first assistant directors were 91% male and composers 90% male.

The 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards are in full swing, with striking “blue carpet” styles to match.
The annual awards ceremony took place Sunday, February 25 in Santa Monica, California, with the casts from “All of Us Strangers,” “Passages,” “Eileen,” “American Fiction,” “The Holdovers,” and more in attendance. The ceremony is hosted by “SNL” alum and “Shrill” creator Aidy Bryant, and was livestreamed on IMDb’s YouTube channel.
On the heels of the buzzy SAG Awards just the night before and even closer to the 2024 Oscars this time around due to the SAG-AFTRA strike in 2023, the Spirit Awards are the place to be seen on the indie film scene. Oscar-nominated films “American Fiction,” “May December,” and “Past Lives” lead the Spirit Award nominations with five nods each, including in the Best Feature category.
To note, the budget cap of $30 million productions made Oscar heavyweights “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,...

In a tantalising combination, Warner Bros and Legendary Entertainment are reportedly negotiating for an Alejandro G. Iñárritu project with Tom Cruise in talks to star.
The untitled project would mark the first under Cruise’s non-exclusive pact with Warner Bros Discovery announced last month, and would be Mexican filmmaker Iñárritu’s first return to English-language filmmaking since Oscar-nominated The Revenant nearly a decade ago.
No details are available on the feature, which Iñárritu co-wrote with Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolas Giacobone.
The latter two co-wrote 2015 best picture Oscar winner Birdman with Iñárritu, and Giacobone co-wrote 2022 comedy drama Bardo and...

As was the case last year, only six of the current 10 Oscar nominees for screenplay achieved similar recognition from the Writers Guild of America. Three of the four films that were excluded from the WGA rosters revealed on February 21 – “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Poor Things,” and “The Zone of Interest” – had been deemed ineligible in January, while “Maestro” simply failed to garner enough support from the guild.
Although it’s competing for the adapted screenplay Oscar, “Barbie” is included in the WGA’s original lineup. This marks the third such instance in 10 years, following the cases of “Whiplash” (2015) and “Moonlight” (2017), the latter of which won the favor of both organizations. The remaining original WGA contenders are “Air” and Oscar hopefuls “The Holdovers,” “May December,” and “Past Lives.”

Many factors drive an Oscar nomination, but a film’s release strategy can make the crucial difference.
“Oppenheimer” (13 nominations) and “Barbie” (8 nominations) stand out as brilliantly handled releases. Shutouts like “Origin” (Neon), “All of Us Strangers” (Searchlight), “Air” (Amazon), “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” (Apple), and “Saltburn” (MGM) prove that no distributor is immune.
However, when it comes to the distributors with the best track record, there are two: Disney had 20 nominations across Searchlight (12), 20th Century Studios (2), and 1 each for National Geographic Documentary Films, Pixar, Searchlight/Hulu/Disney+, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Disney Branded Television and Disney+.
And then there’s Netflix, a behemoth that doesn’t do sub-brands. It had 18 nominations: 7 for “Maestro,” 2 each for “Nyad” and “Society of the Snow,” and 1 each for “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” “May December,” “American Symphony,” “The After,” “El Conde,” “Rustin,” and “Nimona.” Theatrical releases for all of these films were modest at best,...

The race to the 96th annual Academy Awards has picked up the momentum. On Tuesday, the nominations for the upcoming edition of the Oscars were announced. The biggest disappointment comes in the form of the Greta Gerwig directorial ‘Barbie’ as it failed to get nominated in the Best Director and Actress in a Leading Role category.
Actors Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid were on hand to announce the nominees live from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater, reports ‘Variety’.
Acclaimed music composer John Williams, scored his 54th Oscar nomination for the Harrison Ford-starrer ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’. With this he has become the most nominated person in the Oscars.
Here are the nominations:
Actress in a Supporting Role
Emily Blunt for ‘Oppenheimer’; Danielle Brooks for ‘The Color Purple’; America Ferrera for ‘Barbie’; Jodie Foster for ‘Nyad’; and Da’Vine Joy Randolph for ‘The Holdovers’
