Good intentions, but....
kaimenkf18 October 2010
This is not a bad movie. In my opinion, the film has a lot of very good intentions. Not bad. How many films nowadays are made with the purpose of spreading a good message. message of love, loyalty, faith...friendship...you have it all in rust. But the script is poor, the conversations are "almost good" and the characters should be given a better opportunity to be shown. I would say that maybe the writer/director/actor Colin should have asked for some help here, because the impression I got during the 1/30 hours of watching this movie, was "it is a shame, with a little more elaboration it could have been so good". Well that is my humble point of view. the best of the film, i think, is the character of Colin.

Refreshingly original, inspirational film
bkm-720 October 2010
Corbin Bernsen plays James Moore, a minister struggling with a kind of faith-based mid-life crisis. Quitting his job, he returns to his hometown to find that its people have been through their own share of crises and misfortunes - including a tragic, deadly house-fire resulting in the arrest and detention in a psych hospital of Travis, his childhood friend. Can James pull it together enough to make sense of life's unfortunate turns? And how far should he go to help his friend? Corbin Bernsen wrote, directed and co-produced this refreshingly original story. His use of unknown actors gives the film a realistic edginess that some may find fault with, but I found part of the charm. In the end, themes of doubt, faith, friendship, loyalty and hope are what makes the film inspirational, family fare.

small town murder mystery
symea27 December 2010
I have never written a review but I found the film quite moving. It was " just a good movie" until I watched the making of the movie- Most of the other actors are not actors at all. Corbin simply pulled the townspeople and gave them roles. The preacher was the real town preacher, the town "strange guy"- was just that! I was wondering why this film had such a different feel than most Hollywood big pics. It was REAL! suddenly, the film became much more to me. Corbin explains about his writing, the death of his real father, spreading his ashes in the middle of downtown. The struggles of this little town called Kipling and on and on.... I was so touched ! Highly recommend ( DVD-- so you can watch the extras)

Thumbs Way Up!!
vlevensonnd-121 June 2011
I rented this movie knowing that it appeared to be low budget, and seeing that the only recognizable actor was Bernsen, therefore, I was not going to expect to see an Oscar nominated movie. And that's OK! I read what it was about and it looked like something I was most definitely willing to give a try.

I knew who Bernsen's character was speaking to immediately in the beginning scene. As a Lay Minister/Deaconess I've been there before - and more then once in my life. The movie held my interest from beginning to end. I'm an excellent person to figure out the 'who dunnits' and I generally always know well before others how a movie is going to end. This had a couple curve balls I was not expecting! I don't know about you, but I've been fed up with raunchy shows and movies before I was even an adult, so that's why when I come across movies like this, I'm not only willing to give it a shot, but I'm also able to overlook some aspects of low-budgeting, few actors, less frills, few special effects, etc, and look at the heart of the film, and believe me, this movie does indeed have heart.

I was not expecting tears to flow at the end, but down they came, and down they came again while watching the extras.

One thing that has occurred in my life on a number of occasions when the curve balls come - is that when something unexpectedly comes to an end, or a transition comes, whether by choice or by force, what always seems to follow is a needed task, to further learn a lesson, to be there for someone else, or for some other unexpected blessing. This is what I saw in this movie. Had Bernsen's character not went home at that time, he'd not have been there to help his friend. No one else was there to go the distance, and that's the way it is many times in life. No unexpected transition in my life, or the closing of a door has ever gone un-blessed or un-reciprocated. Thank the good Lord for that! Awesome message and awesome delivery. For the heart of the movie I'm giving it a 10!

Why wasn't this in theatres???????????
santiagonunez1616 August 2013
I must say this movie was a pleasant surprise and the film makers really cheated themselves by not releasing this to theatres. With all the recent success of faith based movies like Fireproof, Courageous, and The Grace Card, this movie has better acting than a lot of mainstream Christian movies today. Corbin Bernsen is the kind of actor who has relegated himself to doing low budget, straight to DVD movies, in fact the last major movie in a theatre he was in was Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. In the movie, he plays a minister who has lost his faith and returns to his hometown. There is a mystery here involving a house fire and his once good friend who has now been committed to a psych ward. Lloyd Warner stands out as Travis, the once good friend of Bernsen's character. Throughout the film, I found myself wanting to know the back story behind the two characters and exactly why they both seem to have ended up on opposite sides of life. Everything is shown to us and it's done very well. There is no profanity in this movie, but there are some other themes which in my opinion should have up the movie's rating to a PG-13 based on the elements of suicide, depression, and violence. Either way I recommend this film to anyone and would allow my kids to watch it as well.

Gorgeous
olivematuka14 March 2013
Grabbed this movie last night from one of the last remaining DVD-rental places on earth, I'm assuming. Although I wasn't a big Corbin Bernsen fan during his LA LAW days - ick - I love what he's become since: so much more lovely and thoughtful and scruffy and manly:) I figured this movie would be sweet & raw & real based on the cover's synopsis and knowing it was filmed in small-town Canada (as a cynical Canadian, I even cringed a bit in anticipation of small-town Saskatchewan acting skills to come), but I really wasn't expecting the beautiful little movie which softly enthralled us for those 2 hours.

The story unfolds gently - so imperceptibly - that you wonder if there IS a point to the film. But unfold it does, under the guidance of some really brilliant acting by the locals recruited within the community where they were filming. Of course we were especially blown away by the eerily genius acting chops of Lloyd Warner's Travis - gobsmacked, we were - but we were equally impressed by the actors playing Corbin's sister and father. No reason why non-actors shouldn't be able to 'act', but still...amazing.

SOooo refreshing to just watch a movie with a cast of genuine people (lumps, wrinkles, awkward pauses and all) and a plot line of such understated importance. Great work.

Wonderful movie Rust
donnajane-8133522 May 2017
What a wonderful movie. A real down to earth story. The actors added so much to the story. My dad was born on a farm, so it brought fond memories back to me. I love that the story was about faith in God without being all gussie.. People need to have more of it. I hope more people watch RUST. I didn't know Corbin could write too. Anyone of any faith should watch it. It will warm your heart. Thank you, Corbin and Amazon for making available.

A film to be watched
ILoveThatFilm10 November 2010
I have a few films in my collection that i will always recommend to people to watch. This is one to be added to that list. The film is a wonderful tonic in todays rat race. The setting is nicely different and the characters are great. It has the feel of viewing a home movie in it's intimacy. The film deals with a Preachers loss of faith and a community struggling with a house fire which killed a family and a local idiot who was guilty of arson. No film is that simple and the beauty of this film is in the inter-twining of the stories. A local back water, non-glamorous, ordinary town and an ordinary Preacher with his troubles lead to a cracking alternative to the dross coming out of California. Sit back, relax and turn the phone off. It will be worth it.

Rust, with Corbin Bernson
buildingbrothers130 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I haven't written a movie review and may never do it again but this movie is worth writing about. The story is unique and the characters are more than original, they are authentic. It is a story of tragedy in a rural Canadian farm community, liberated by the tenacity of a returning pastor that is trying to make sense of his own life as well as the lives of this shaken town. The use of locals as characters in the story line makes it real. The most captivating actor is Lloyd Weber playing the part of Travis, who confesses to an arson that kills four beloved members of the community. Travis is a mentally challenged person that doesn't fit the character of a killer and that is why Pastor James Moore, played by Corbin Bernson, is trying to figure things out.

There are a few twists to the plot that keep you wondering what will take place next. Even though it is a movie dealing with difficult times it is also one that you should watch as a family. It is clean, entertaining and inspirational.

Underrated
kyryqf20 November 2023
I wasn't expecting much when I saw the IMDB rating, but I like Corbin as an actor, so I gave it a try.

I was pleasantly surprised!

You know where the plot is heading throughout much of the movie, but it keeps you glued to the television nine the less. It is a believable, inspiring and emotional flick that will leave you asking, "where am I at in my journey?" This would be a great movie for a church youth group or family night if you have teens or preteens. I'm still asking myself how this movie has been out for 13 years, yet I've never seen or heard of it.

I highly recommend this movie for anyone struggling with their purpose; strong in their faith; or unbelievers looking for a good family movie!

Excellent and as close to reality as any movie can get.
tcrenshaw-3927512 August 2017
In a world of fake reality TV and impossible movie plots, this movie surprises with absolute reality. This must be the reason for its only slightly above mid score. While there is a place for unrealistic entertainment, you will not find it in this movie. What you will find is an absolutely astounding and realistic story. The acting is surprisingly good while not going overboard or being amateurish. After recently seeing "The Shack", I would rate this movie higher. I am truly surprised this movie didn't make more of an impact. It's not full of suspense, but there's enough to keep you watching. The last 15 minuets are outstanding. If you have teens, this is an ideal family movie. They may be a little bored with the movie, but the lessons learned at the end are well worth the wait.
