My interested piqued by little more than the image used to advertise the show on Netflix, I watched "Sweet Home" mostly unaware of what it was going to be about. I found a show that I enjoyed, though perhaps one that could have benefitted from being a touch more straightforward or more clearly established its rules.
Cha Hyun-Su (Song Kang) has moved into an apartment building, following the untimely death of his family for which he blames himself. Depressed and living an increasingly isolated lifestyle, his life is thrown into further turmoil when the building is attacked by various monsters, some of which are seemingly transformed versions of his neighbours.
Overall, I enjoyed "Sweet Home". The performances are really strong, I really liked the practical creature effects that the show uses (the CGI slightly less so, but it's not noticeably bad). The story reverts close to being a rote zombie story, but the various different types of creature stop that from becoming the case.
When I talked about establishing its rules better, what I mean is, it seems in some cases that the creatures are related to the character flaws of their host, but not in all circumstances. I understand, from reading about the webcomic, that there are different types of monster, so maybe that is going to be delved into in upcoming second season, that remains rumoured at the time of writing, but I still felt this could have been better explained in what we've seen so far.
That said, it was an enjoyable ride and I'd be happy to watch more.
