A gripping Home invasionThriller
jansjohnson-2142611 August 2021
Kuruthi is tale of vengeance and hate told through a creative portrayal of the often-underused sub-genre of the home invasion thriller. The movie with a slow start becomes very much interesting and engaging later on. The movie shows two types of religious people, some who took the path of violence and others who took the path of justice. The movie shows how religious beliefs can pull down a person as well as endorse him.

Kuruthi: The Unwanted Holy Sacrifice in the name of Religion
skmenon199311 August 2021
Kuruthi ( Sacrifice) starring Prithviraj, Roshan Mathew, Mammookoya, Murali Gopi, Sagar Suriya, Srinda, Shine Tom Chacko released on Amazon Prime today....

From the trailer we realized its a full on serious movie involving the elements of action and thrill.... Finally the wait is over....

Yes Kuruthi talks about the current dreadful condition of the society arising due to the most delicate word " RELIGION"...Here everyone is right from their own side but how it is impacted in the society, no one sees towards it......

Kuruthi talks about those unwanted holy sacrifices made in the name of religion.... Rather by respecting one another religion, just by some hidden agenda or for a fun how it's being broken creating chaos and atrocities in the society....

Talking about the performance:

Prithviraj had a splendid performance. Taking up a grey character and performing the best is a challenging task and he nailed it

Roshan Mathew equally performed well, after C U SOON, another pivotal role bagged by him...

Sagar Suriya who seen in the sitcom programs as a comedian here, he had beautifully been exploited as he proved that he could portray serious characters too.....

Moreover Mammookoya the person who made us laugh all through the years here by his strong character had won the hearts of audience....

Srinda & Murali Gopi had done justice to their roles.....

Cinematography, BGM was awesome...It should have been a theatrical experience

Overall the movie is good to watch but it's not advisable for below 13 years of age as the topic being taken is delicate and also some scenes are not recommended to be seen by them....

Timely and much needed.

Brilliant. Other than the strong message the movie is striving to put across, the making and the background score also deserve a huge applause. Felt like we were watching a Hollywood well-made thriller. Malayalam industry is sure going to places.

Kuruthi is a product of the highly polarising times that we live in, devoid of any shred of subtlety in its intentions and narrative ambition.
Robi194611 August 2021
Kuruthi is brooding tale of vengeance and grit told through the ingenious conceit of the often-underused sub-genre of the home invasion thriller. Kuruthi is structured as a tightly knit thriller that unfolds within the confines of a house where the duality of religious fundamentalism and hatred take shelter for a seemingly never-ending evening of gore and fanatic revelations.

Prithviraj deserves to be lauded for his conviction in sticking his neck out by investing in such a risky project that supposedly deals with delicate themes.

The director Manu Warrier resorts to good old-fashioned filmmaking with the use of dual focus shots , extreme close ups of tense faces and spilt diopter lenses to stress on the building sense of dread within the limited setting and extracts tension with fiery exchanges between the characters trapped in their own living hell.

A watchable thriller with many problems.

A film which started at a slow pace then shifting into top gear and then went downhill. Performance of the cast are satisfying but the film lacks something appealing.

No one ever dared this...
yadavtsss11 August 2021
In the History of Indian Cinema, there is no movie which talks about the nuances of the hatred that lies between Hindus and Muslims...

The film ends with the right note... "Hate" is the cause of every problem our mankind faces and it doesn't end with death...

Perfectly needed... Thank God someone told this...

Everyone's acting is beyond words... I can't praise them enough... This is a psychological thriller if someone knows this subject...

Give up Hate...

Decent one - (6.5)
sujith789_reviews11 August 2021
  • The build up and entire first half of the movie was brilliant.

  • Starting of second half lagged little and felt the plot was losing, but it became engaging again and ending was decent.

  • Casting was excellent. Prithiviraj showed negative role suits well for him. Mammukoya was brilliant.

  • It had shades of Varathan at some point and felt this movie would be better if Varathan wasn't made.

  • Overall a decent movie. My rating- 6.5/10.

Kuruthi is a risky thriller delivered with ease and gripping moments, Prithvi and Mamokoya were top class.
hamsalakshimi11 August 2021
Hats off to the whole team for delivering such a risky, controversial subject neatly and perfectly so that none complains but enjoys each frame of it. Prithvi, the youth legend has always been awesome in choosing his roles and this is another one in his cap, excellent acting, felt like Laiq could have come little earlier rather than a long wait. All the casts were superb, music, screenplay and direction were perfect, a perfect OTT treat for all movie lovers.

A Well-Made Moral Lesson
nairtejas11 August 2021
Ignore the didacticism and you get a hard-hitting moral lesson in Kuruthi (Holy Slaughter), where one night a male-only family finds its house turn into a battleground between religious men and woman who are out to settle scores. Despite the lopsided screenplay, it's well-shot, has gritty music, and holds Mamukoya on an invisible pedestal as he rightly should be. I would watch this again just to enjoy him snap and talk the truth about the world that we live in.

Kuruthi is a praiseworthy attempt to discover cobweb of religious conflicts and antagonism on casteism.
SAMTHEBESTEST12 August 2021
Kuruthi (2021) : Movie Review -

Malayalam Cinema is ruling 2021 like no other cinema industry in India. They have already delivered 4-5 Classic movies this year and many other great films close to Classic tag. Kuruthi is another great film coming from Malayalam cinema and it falls in that second category of 'Close to Classic' tag. It has some sensational theories about religious differences, pacifism, violence and undying hatred on casteism which will leave tou in shock. Although, it lacks the concrete ending, it has that agressively executed hard-hitting drama in thriller mode before to worth two hours of your viewing.

The film is about how enduring human relations that transcends boundaries struggle to survive trials of hatred and prejudice. The protagonist in the film looks bit confused which is one of the biggest shortcoming of the film but fortunately the supporting characters and antagonists recovers that loss. It's a very slow film in the first 40 minutes and offers nothing special related to the main context but once the antagonist enters, it becomes a thrilling action drama. From that moment you are hooked to it for next 80 minutes without any breaks.

Roshan Mathew plays Ibru (Ibrahim), who is depressed and so not at all charming and intelligent. Though, he is honest to whatever the writer has written for him. Mossa Khader and Murali Gopy are fantastic in supporting roles. The best and most surprising factor in the cast is Prithviraj Sukumaran who plays Laiq, a hardcore antagonist with no strings attached and cold hearted nature. From his entrance till the climax, he just amazes you in every scene. The second best thing about Kuruthi after power-packed performances is it's writing team. The storyline is surely controversial and hard-hitting and the screenplay is also impactful despite slow start. That low turn in the climax could have been avoided and more aggressive or intellectual ending would have made it an unforgettable film for sure. Cinematography is dull at many occasions but the background score and Music is impressive according to situations.

Manu Warrier, the director of the film deserves a note of appreciation for trying hands in this complex subject. A cobweb of religious point of views can never satisfy all kinds of audience. It has that curse attached to it but still Warrier goes on to handle sensitive things with clear and straightforward vision. We don't see such stuff everyday so yes Kuruthi is special in that way. However, the fact cannot be denied that it may hurt the feelings of some communities but that's the risk they had to take. Overall, Kuruthi is a fabulous product that shouldn't be missed by smart audience and quality cinema lovers.

RATING - 7/10*

Full marks for Mamukkoya; the film could have been finer. [+54%]
arungeorge1312 August 2021
I'm attributing the entire 2.5 stars to Mamukkoya's portrayal of Moosa Khader. He's dripping with swagger from start to finish. The rest of the film doesn't hold up. The pedestrian screenplay treatment and the superficial dialogues do not help. Performances are fine, since Kuruthi boasts a talented ensemble, but the half-baked writing struggles to keep viewers excited about the fates of these characters. The first half definitely towers over the second, but the moment the exposition around religion starts to unfurl, Kuruthi becomes infinitely less exciting. The screenplay is only looking to tick all contemporary boxes centered around religious hatred, and not offer any fresh commentary on the same. That being said, it still takes guts to make movies (or create content) around flammable topics.

Bold theme, one night thriller
salmaaannord12 August 2021
One night , 2 sides . What a movie , writer and director (manu warrior ) made a bold step , with an extremely powerful and conflict theme. Fresh , thrilling , realistic, raw movie. Malayalam movie proves it once again why they are considered as best in country.

Story wise and making wise a top notch effort. Hats off to all the cast and crew , and still shocked how they came upwith this idea. Performance wise every cast done well , that boy (nelson) roshan, mamookoya, prithviraj, srinda , shane , manikandan , murali gopi , i meant everyone. Even the guy showing up in the mosque. Well done team , and thanks for the movie.

Rough, impressive, upbeat, efficent
This Mollywood production (the Malayalam cinema of Kerala in South India), of reasonable length, tells the drama of a widower, Roshan Mathew (who has just lost his wife and child, in a melancholy performance with all the misery of the world on his shoulders) and his father (Mammukoya, the philosopher on duty) who find themselves taken hostage first by a pursued policeman who takes refuge in his house with a prisoner, then besieged by Prithviraj Sukumaran (obsessive and hysterical) who wishes to kill the prisoner at all costs (that is to say, to kill all those who would want to prevent him). Add to that Srindaa, Roshan Mathew's neighbor, who has a crush on him, but they are not from the same community. Of course, the house under siege with our hostages is lost in the mountains and the forest, which helps to tighten the tension.

The latent conflict is not clear, but it seems to be a conflict between the Muslim and Hindu communities. The more the film progresses, the more the tension rises: first the cop and his prisoner, then those who seek to kill him. The whole thing takes place for a good part in the night.

The film contains some moralistic dialogue, but all in all it's a superb country thriller that works and for which it's hard to guess the progression.

When religion becomes poison that cultivates hate.
drjineesh12 August 2021
A pulsating thriller from start to finish, Kuruthi is a film that captures you in minutes, troubles you throughout, asks many an uncomfortable question over its runtime and leaves a lasting impression.

Addressing the very common yet much less talked about (than necessary) issue of how religious overtures are transforming human behavior and relationships, the movie adopts a no holds barred approach, taking on all corners and laying out all sides in the open, as raw as could possibly be imagined.

There is no subtlety, no taking sides and not a tinge of sympathy; and to pull off something like that you needed a top-notch set of actors and that's what you have. A stellar cast where, apart from Roshan Mathew and Murali Gopi, and to some extent Shine Tom (who all are outstanding nevertheless); the characters, penned exquisitely and embodied with perfection, don't conform to their stereotypes at all - as if any further display of boldness is necessary; although I did feel that the monstrosity of Prithviraj was a tad too overbearing in that small space (or maybe that it was meant to be like that?).

As with any disease, we have the morbidly ill ones, the not so ill ones (but ill, nonetheless), the ones who are not ill (but could turn ill anytime) and the truly immune ones; and as the movie rolls on we discover what transpires when such a cluster is confined to a small space over a period of time (in this case, one night).

A small flame is quickly transformed into a full blown all consuming wildfire ( I was pleasantly reminded of "The hateful eight" while watching)!

Accolades to the writer - for someone doing his first film there are more than half a dozen lines that are going to ring and resonate in the viewer's ears for years to come. The camera captures the lights (and the absence of it) beautifully and the background score augments the experience.

Towards the last leg the movie does stretch a little unnecessarily and has some sequences - the ever present fight, fall, recover, fight, repeat sequences; the mass transformation of one character (I felt it was out of place though admittedly, it did look good) - that may have been included for the so called mass appeal that arguably descends it from the greatness it had touched moments ago; but the ending (much like the interval scene) is perfect.

Despite these minor blemishes; Kuruthi deserves to be applauded for the brave and unpretentious portrayal of an extremely sensitive subject and would remain one of the more daring and powerful films of recent times.

Message is top notch
sanion-8651811 August 2021
Perfect start cast, amazing cinematography, thrilling bgm and an outstanding message with a few loopholes in the whole script I gave it a rating of 7 because somewhere I felt that few scenes were not justified properly but still overall a movie worth watching.

Kuruthi is the movie what we want in this era.. it's a story of some lives who trapped in the cage of religion.. Wonderful performance from the cast especially Prithviraj (Laiq) Roshan (Ibrahim) Srindha (Ramani). And technically it's a well made movie.. Recommending.

Basic story shown well
praneethvsp12 August 2021
The First 1 hour of the movie keeps you engaged. Later few monotonous scenes make you disappointed especially in the last 30-40mins. I was expecting a more lengthy role of Prithviraj.

My final verdict it's one time watchable.

An average Movie with great making but a weak script
geoelparakadavil11 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The thing is the movie is right about the hatred between communities and how it makes chaos. But it doesnt even care to show the circumstances why those occur which is essential as thats when all this fighting makes sense. The only reason the movie says for all these chaos is because someone made their temple impure which is a really vague term and can differ to person to person. The movie doesnt even try to say what happened there. Also who is that guy who killed the shopkeeper. No one knows. Why was Laiq's father killed?

It could have been really better.......

Not a review
p-karthick011 August 2021
This is one of the best written screenplays of recent times. The movie not only manages to keep us engaged throughout, it also awakens something which had been dormant inside us.

Religion is something which is politicised for the sake of power and money. One of the characters in the movie keeps reminding folks around him about their economic status (being poor) and how being part of any religion is not going to change their situation even a bit.

The dialogues right through the movie keeps playing with our minds and in the end we are left wondering which side are we on, or do we need to choose a side, or are we going to make our future generations follow our path in the name of religion??

We are left with more questions than answers

Isn't the bloodshed(kuruthi) enough???
