Not much of a pay off
I am a sucker for anything folk horror, so the fact that I almost turned this off about 20 minutes in was surprising.

The action moved at an uncomfortably quick pace that felt awkward and clunky. Come to find out it was just a prelude and it ended up settling into something more interesting. This movie is heavy on conversation and light on the action. They did a good job keeping up the suspense, slowly building up to the climax but nothing really exciting happens until the last 4th of the movie. The ending was also pretty unfulfilling and left you wondering what REALLY happened as not much was really explained. The movie as a whole was shot nicely, edited interestingly and had high picture quality. The acting was also generally successful across the board.

This story definitely had some potential it just felt a bit undercooked. It was a decent experience in total, but definitely on the lower end so I would only loosely recommend this to someone who is partial to folk horror.

Almost the 5 worst films I've ever seen
cinjanssens26 January 2024
This movie is just terrible. Unclimactic. Zero story line. A girl finds a necklace and becomes evil. No character or story development. It is just completely lousy. Really i struggle to find one good thing about this movie. The acting is terrible, who casted this awful woman as the lead i just don't even know. I want my time back wasted on this piece of junk. I'm not sure who gave this movie a 9 but I'm pretty sure they must be personally invested in this POS in some way. It doesn't even deserve credit for being entertaining because it was just boring and really poorly written and directed. It's not scary at all - its simple ridiculous.

Anyone who thinks this movie is 10/10
cynthiacaton7 April 2024
...is delusional. Sorry to be harsh, but the high ratings are really misleading. This movie will not change your life.

The best parts are the beginning in the early childhood as they kind of set a folk horror stage. Flashing to the future, the lead actress is unappealing. The movie tries, and fails, to tell the story in flashbacks that are unsatisfying. This is not entertainment. It is also not a mental health awareness film. It is just bad.

The cinematography is beautiful, but not nice enough to recommend the film. I can't say that this would appeal to anyone, except for friends of people in the film.

A whole lot of nothing without explaining Warning: Spoilers
There was nothing. The mom told the brother to watch after his sister and he doesn't causing her to wander up a cliff for minutes to find a necklace, which the movie was about. And we see the 1 of the few times we see this "water demon".

It was never explained why it was attached to it, or anything

The "good" parts of the childhood were either muted, such as the time she talked to the priest as a child (where the mother slapped her for whatever was said), or it was taken out so the older adult version could "remember" it.

Then after that slap scene, it just all the sudden cuts into her being an adult.

She returns home after meeting her brother and apparently this water demon made her kill her mother by accident when trying to kill her brother as a child, which caused a failed attempt at suicide by the father and landed him in the mental hospital

Then she kills him and the priest because of this water demon that we only seen 1-2 times in the background until she kills her brother saying she isn't alone, revealing the "water demon" which was a normal siren type thing

Then it cuts to a new kid who finds the necklace

Does that mean Evie got killed? Does that mean another "water demon"? I kind of wished it was more coherent in the plot, then it would be good

The acting was ok-ish.

What was that mess?
orionhi28 January 2024
Ok. So the first 8 minutes was interesting and caught my attention. Every minute after that was so boring it was putting me to sleep. I can't believe the director and film editors saw the final cut of this movie and thought "that's great, people will love it". Absolutely nothing happens for the rest of the movie. You get to watch this girl pour booze in her face and that's the extent of the movie. It's no spoiler to say it's a supernatural ghost movie but they don't explain anything. I think they implied what it was at the beginning but this movie is such a cluster flop you have no idea. Needless to say I do not recommend this movie. You'll find more excitement doing laundry or waiting for your fingernails grow.

Not Good
simongoode28 March 2024
2 stars because the cast isn't bad, this wasn't a line up of actors taking anything just to get seen, they'd been in other works and are rather accomplished. But simply not a film about a girl who finds a cursed necklace on the shore and sets free a water demon that wants to claim her and those she loves, as it is advertised to be. If this film is trying to be clever and say something else, about life, or the struggles we face, I don't know to be honest, it fails there too.

So, a horror that isn't a horror, or what it says on the tin. Yes, it's better than any film I've ever written, but that shouldn't be the benchmark. Avoid.

A very atmospheric mystery...
paul_haakonsen13 January 2024
When I sat down to watch the 2023 movie "Evie" here in 2024, I had never actually heard about the movie. But I must say that I was instantly drawn to the movie's cover. And given the movie's cover and it being a horror movie that I hadn't already seen, of course I had to watch it.

Writers Dominic Brunt and Jamie Lundy put together a rather interesting script and storyline. I was intrigued by the narrative and genuinely entertained, because it was a nicely constructed narrative. Sure, the pacing in "Evil" is a bit tedious, and thus it might not find a broad appeal with the wider audience. But I do think, if you enjoy horror mysteries, then you should certainly give "Evie" a chance.

I wasn't familiar with the cast ensemble in the movie, but the actors and actresses put on good performances. I enjoy watching unfamiliar talents on the screen when I watch a movie, so the cast of "Evie" was a treat for me. Honey Lundy did a nice job in portraying the young Evie, while Holli Dempsey did an equal good job portraying adult Evie.

Something that really worked well in "Evie" was the music. It was dark ambient atmospheric and really layered the movie in an otherworldly sheen. It sounded like music made by CryoChamber, but I am not sure if it was that band or not. Regardless, the music in "Evie" is out of this world and really compliments the movie quite nicely.

My rating of directors Dominic Brunt and Jamie Lundy's 2023 movie "Evie" lands on a six out of ten stars.

Boring!
gragz5 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
So. Girl finds necklace. Then nothing happens, she gets older and nothing happens. You fall asleep as nothing happens. You wake up and nothing happens. You keep watching and nothing happens. You fall asleep again which is fine cause nothings happening. You wake up wondering if you missed anything and your partner is in the middle of committing suicide cause she's bored out of her mind watching the most boring pile of garbage she's ever witnessed. Finally when something happens it's too late, you're being resuscitated as you died of boredom.

This review is a million times more entertaining than the movie.

Creepy British horror
georgio-2649012 January 2024
Lovely little film. Very tense from the outset, young girl finds an antique piece of jewellery on the beach then things start to go a tad unpleasant for her and everyone around her. It's poltergeistesque with a tad of Rosemary's baby .

The movie jumps forward about 15 years in the first twenty minutes or so, but doesn't tell the viewer then back again and so on.

A quirky and easy to follow little horror, well worth a watch.

Wonderful casting . Clear and clean scriptwriting. Direction is on point and the camerawork. Acting is faultless and some beautiful scenery from start to finish.

I would've given 10 from 10 but for the jumping back and forth.

Save your time
clarisserose27 April 2024
The description is dead wrong. It's more like a girl finds a "cursed" necklace and then she has family issues. I fully expect this to be a horror movie or horror related but it's not even close. It's not an awful movie if you actually write the real description. I'm rating it based of the description it's given. The last maybe 10 minutes have some mild horror elements but that's as scary as we get . It's more or less a snooze fest. No explanation on the necklace or what it supposedly did to her. She just seems like a messed up kid who grows up with a messed up family. Nothing to do with demons or any of the likes.

Evie gripped me throughout
mcvbnrdrv20 February 2024
I'm no expert in this area but what I can say is that for someone who struggles to concentrate on a movie throughout and follow the plot, I sometimes even find it hard to stay awake, I was totally gripped watching Evie throughout.

It's mystery had me gripped and I love the way in which it was put together, the shots, the sounds, the way the story was depicted, even if that was a slightly disturbing one, I was kept curious, intrigued and on the edge of my seat. It didn't freak me out, I simply appreciated this movie as a piece of art with such powerful underlying messages.

Thought provoking and can't wait for the sequel.

Loved this film
carolinegoldsbrough10 February 2024
I have watched this film three times now, it was a fascinating watch with lots of underlying messages about mental health. I enjoyed it.

A lot of care and attention has gone into the production of this film, the imagery and music was brilliant.

The location was a perfect setting for this movie, the farm house and the beaches at the edge of the sea could be both creepy and beautiful depending on the scene shot.

Honey Lundy is an excellent young actress and she played the part ever so well.

To summarise, this is a british film made and written by Jamie Lundy who I am sure we will see more from in the future.

Gritty dark drama in a beautiful welsh coastal setting
lisamorton-2537710 February 2024
Not a horror in the true sense of the word but rather a gritty compelling drama which hooks you in. Young Evie is a great actor in the making. The dark dramatic North Welsh coast makes a perfect backdrop for this tale of a cursed pendant left by a creature of the deep. A testament to honest film making which doesn't require the computerised bells and whistles of today's super budget movies. The makers describe the pendant as a representation of mental health issues causing the wearer to act outside of their true character. I particularly enjoyed the use of limited dialogue which allows the watcher to explore their own thoughts emotions and imagination. A great debut and I hope to see more from this team.

Amazing!

Warning: Spoilers
Great cast & a great storyline! My friends and I watched this in cinema and it was amazing, full of plot twists and jumpscares. We loved the effectiveness of the flashbacks from her childhood alternating with how it affected her as a grown up in the current day and then once her brother got into contact with her again it really got us questioning what's really going on and had us on the edge of our seats!

Also the ending, wow! I won't spoil it however it really kept us engaged. The soundtracks, scenery and directors style really added to the suspense throughout the whole film and it was presented very realistically. TV and Film is the one industry that celebrates people being people and in my opinion this film was a masterpiece because it really outlined the theme of mental health and how small moments in your life can really be carried with you on and throughout your entire life and change it entirely in the process. Great job to everyone and I definitely recommend watching!

Title: Evie

Evie is a gripping horror film that takes the audience on a terrifying journey through the shadows of the human psyche. The film masterfully blends suspense, atmosphere, and psychological horror to create a truly chilling experience. The cinematography is hauntingly beautiful, enhancing the eerie tone of the movie. The sound design is impeccable, with every creak and whisper sending shivers down your spine. The performances are top-notch, particularly from the lead actress whose portrayal of fear and desperation feels incredibly real. As the story unfolds, it delves into themes of guilt, trauma, and the darkness that lies within us all. Evie is a must-see for horror enthusiasts looking for a film that will leave them haunted long after the credits roll.

Brilliant and Suspenseful
scarletttalithasim10 February 2024
Good build up and interesting story if a little slow in the beginning. I was in suspense the whole time! Great acting from a new actress particularly for such a young girl - she was phenomenal , interested to see her in any future products ! It was nice to see the effort to bring awareness to the mental health community in such an interesting way as a psychological thriller. And a great job done from a first time director it was a thourougly enjoyable watch and i reccomend that you give it a go.

Wonderful casting, brilliant writing and good directing and camerawork from start to finish. Definitely an 8/10.

Give it a watch!

Jump scares,
syyncjqnn12 February 2024
Absolutely loved this film. Right from the off set you know you are in for something special

. There's some great performances from the cast - but a special mention must go to the "young Evie" Honey Lundy's performance is fantastic and although this is her first role, I suspect we'll see a lot more from her

There's a deep sense of foreboding captured in this film, almost a folksy style of horror (think Wickerman) but then there's plenty of good old fashioned jump scares too.

It's beautifully shot, and the locations have been chosen perfectly.

The film is only 1hr 2 mins - but there's a lot of quality packed into the perfect toy short run time

You should watch it.

Great watch
Brit_Film_Nerd11 February 2024
As a fan of independent British film making, this film delivered a high level psychological suspense ebbing and flowing throughout the film, with hints of extreme twisted violence, beset amongst a beautiful Welsh backdrop. The film has a deep underpinning message about abuse and paths taken in life and the folklore element was a good marriage of narrative, helping the storyline develop and allow the viewer to keep guessing throughout which added to the suspense and demanded the concentration of the viewer. The special effects and cinematography were of an elite level for an independent British film. And the young girl who played Evie really sold the part through both subtle and elaborate gestures, movements and tone of voice that would be expected from any professionally trained actor, so props to her. 👏 I would definitely recommend the film to watch 10/10.

Outstanding
nala-9927914 February 2024
The evie film is the best I have seen in a long time. I don't feel alone now and I no where my safe place is in along time. I will definitely pass it on and let as many people I know to watch it as its well worth the watch. I watched this film with my friend both of us were hooked, the actors involved were amazing and were perfect for the characters they were aiming to portray. The storyline itself was very intriguing, the producers should most definitely be proud of this wonderful production, we both have a better understanding of mental health now and have been made aware of how people with mental health feel.

A great metaphorical thriller
natashakiahroberts10 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The film itself starts off quite slow however once it gets going it is a thrilling watch with a lot of depth and attention to detail. The meaning behind the film, implying mental health and addiction portrays well in the form of a 'demon', which you see throughout the film in various situations. The films setting and music only add to the melancholy, yet also creating a suspense throughout the whole film. I think if you are confused or disappointed after the first watch, definitely give it a second as it is a very well thought through piece with a lot of meaning behind it. I definitely think it is worth a watch, and a rating of 10/10. Amazing!

Wow this is life-changing

Warning: Spoilers
10/10, this film expresses not just the horror aspects of the film Industry yet the real mental, physical challenges of life. This is portrayed beautifully by showing mental health isn't a choice it's a curse upon those who are unfortunate enough to suffer with it. This is expertly shown in the end scene with the cycle of mental health continuing from the opening scene. This film shows the reality of how life is, mental and family issues. It opens up new avenues for the film industry. I can't say in words how this can positively affect the world in opening up new aspects of films. This is globally life changing for the not just movie lovers like myself, yet those who are struggling with the mental health battle.
