Suspecting her husband of infidelity, gynecologist Dr. Catherine Stewart hires an escort named Chloe in order to test his faithfulness. Soon, the relationships between all three intensify.

Catherine and David, she a doctor, he a professor, are at first glance the perfect couple. Happily married with a talented teenage son, they appear to have the perfect life. But when David misses a flight and his surprise birthday party, Catherine's long simmering suspicions rise to the surface. Suspecting infidelity, she decides to hire an escort to seduce her husband and test his loyalty. Catherine finds herself 'directing' Chloe's encounters with David, and Chloe's end of the bargain is to report back, the descriptions becoming increasingly graphic as the meetings multiply.

In Toronto, gynecologist Dr. Catherine Stewart is at a crossroads in her life. Her teenaged son, music student Michael Stewart, no longer confides in her, she not even knowing that he is sexually active until she catches him in the act. Michael does talk to his father, college music professor David Stewart, who in turn tells her nothing about what is going on with Michael. Although Catherine still loves David, the romance has largely deserted their marriage. She stumbles across some evidence, albeit circumstantial, that David is a chronic philanderer, the most recent case taking place while David was on a speaking engagement in New York City. To find out if her suspicions about David are accurate, Catherine decides to hire a prostitute, a young woman named Chloe who she has seen in the Yorkville neighborhood of her office. Chloe's one time only job for Catherine is to encounter David at one of his regular haunts pretending to be a student, flirt with him to see what his reaction is, and report back to Catherine. Chloe is not to take it any further, meaning no touching let alone no sex. But this one time only job gets extended for various reasons. Chloe's job takes on unexpected dimensions, both for her and for Catherine and not only affects the two of them but also David, Michael and Catherine's practice.—Huggo

Chloe (Amanda Seyfried) is an escort. In her job, Chloe has learned to read people and to understand what they want without them having to say it. Chloe knows how to transform into any person that her client desires her to be. Catherine (Julianne Moore), a middle-aged gynecologist living in Toronto. Catherine's husband David (Liam Neeson) is a college professor & is handsome.

Catherine has planned a surprise Birthday party for David and invited a lot of their friends to her home, but he misses his flight. The next morning, David is back home, and Catherine finds a SMS on his phone from a student saying, "Thanks for last night". Cath gets suspicious and thinks that David might be having an affair. When Catherine asks David if he went out for a drink, after he missed the flight, he says no.

Catherine finds her 17-year-old son Michael (Max Thieriot) with his girlfriend Anna (Nina Dobrev), who is walking around the house in her underwear. The relationship between Catherine and Michael seems strained. That night David & Cath go for dinner & he flirts with a waitress. Cath meets Chloe in the bathroom, when they are in adjacent stalls. Chloe was crying and lamenting that men do not understand women's feelings. When they come out of the stall, Chloe thanks Catherine and offers her a hair pin, which Catherine politely refuses.

One day, Catherine also notices Chloe from her office window, entering an upscale bar, and surmises that they work in the same neighborhood and Chloe goes there to meet clients. Next day Cath visits Chloe at her hotel bar where she picks clients. She hires Chloe to test David's loyalty to her. She sends Chloe to David's coffee shop and wants to know David's reaction when Chloe "presents" herself to him. David mildly flirts with her, Chloe reports back to Catherine. Cath pays Chloe to meet him one more time. Meanwhile, Anna breaks up with Michael and he is distraught.

Chloe then tells Cath of a make out session with David in the glass house of an abandoned park. She asks that Chloe show her the results of her tests for sexually transmitted diseases. Chloe brings the test results to Catherine's office, where she meets Michael and flirts with him. Catherine is distraught at learning that David cheated on her with Chloe and masturbates in her shower picturing the make out session between Chloe and David.

Chloe calls Catherine and asks her to meet at a hotel room, where she says that she had a proper sex session with David in that room, just a few hours ago. Cath is oddly turned on by Chloe when she narrates what David did to her. Chloe can sense this in Catherine and continues to narrate the incident in vivid detail. Catherine is visibly shaken but composes herself to pay Chloe for her services. Catherine confides in Chloe that she and David used to be inseparable and now cannot understand how their relationship came to this point. During the meeting at a hotel where Chloe says she had a tryst with David, Chloe kisses Catherine. Catherine, surprised by this, abruptly leaves.

Catherine attends Michael's recital & is proud of him. She is wearing Chloe's perfume & David smells it & likes it. Upset by this, Catherine leaves and meets with Chloe again at a hotel, where she asks how David touches her while undressing her. Realizing that she is heartbroken and needs to hookup, Chloe seduces and undresses Catherine, and dominates her, having sex with her. After that Chloe offers Cath her mother's hairpin which Cath refuses.

Chloe is desperately in love with Cath at this point. After having an amazing time with Chloe, Catherine gets home very late, leading David to ask if she has been unfaithful. Catherine tells him he has been unfaithful as well, and the two argue. The next day Chloe goes to Cath's office & implores her to be with her. She professes her love for Cath, but she says she can't be with Chloe & writes her a check instead. Catherine insists their relationship was a business transaction and asks her to please leave. She calls off their relationship. Chloe responds by meeting Michael & gaining his trust.

Chloe calls Cath again & says she met David. Cath calls her to a coffee shop in an hour. At that shop, she calls David 1/2 hour before to give him a chance to come clean. David says that he has never been unfaithful to her. When Chloe arrives, she sees David & turns back. David says he has never seen that woman. Cath realizes that Chloe has made those stories to come between David & her & that she is in love with her.

Upset, Catherine reveals everything about Chloe and that they slept together. She apologizes, saying that she felt she had become invisible to David as she aged, while David became more attractive to her. David comforts and kisses her, and the couple reconciles.

Jealous, Chloe goes to Catherine's home. Catherine arrives to find Chloe and Michael in Catherine's bed having sex. After sending Michael out of the room, the angry Chloe accuses Catherine of thinking that she could invite someone into her life, use them, then order them away when she's finished. Just like all of her other male clients. Chloe tells Catherine that she is in love with her and that she only had sex with Michael because Michael reminds her of Catherine. Chloe tells Catherine that "money isn't enough to make her go away". Catherine apologizes and asks Chloe what she wants.

Chloe asks for one last kiss as well as to take her hairpin yet again. Catherine kisses Chloe just when Michael walks back into the room. In a fit of anger, Catherine pushes Chloe against a large window which breaks. Catherine then is forced to watch, helpless, as Chloe lets go of the window frame and lets herself fall through the bedroom window to her death on the patio below.

Sometime later, at Michael's graduation party, Catherine is seen wearing Chloe's hairpin; the family is reconciled.
