In today’s movie landscape, its easy to get a sequel or remake greenlit, particularly in horror, but what about an original movie that is a heavy homage to an older title? This can give is something fresh and fun if done well. It has to have the right ingredients like the right actors on screen, the right script, and know exactly what it is and what it’s meant to accomplish. Indie director Joe Begos was the right guy to give us a wholly original genre flick that came out in 2019 to seemingly good reviews but little fanfare 4 years later. In 2016, Liam Gavin’s heartbreaking and keenly intelligent A Dark Song set the bar for films about grieving mothers of stolen sons turning to the occult in search of a solution, and set it high. Nevertheless, hopes were high for From Black, whose take on the difficult business of what happens in the aftermath of loss was said to be informed by director Thomas Marchese’s experiences in his former career as a police officer. Marchese previously made the documentary Fallen, which attempted to dive into the psychology of officers who have lost colleagues in the line of duty yet continue to serve. Unfortunately, he doesn’t seem to have made much effort to look beneath the surface when it comes to the people whom officers often find themselves working with.
This film begins and ends with police sergeant Bray (Jennifer Lafleur) exploring the scene of a crime. Nobody knows precisely what.

Thomas Marchese’s supernatural thriller From Black is a story about loss, grief, and the decision to go through the hardest of trials to get somebody’s loved one back. Starring Anna Camp, Jennifer Lafleur, John Ales, and Travis Hammer, From Black is about Cora Loewen, who agrees to undergo a dangerous ritual to get her dead son back. Although the premise sounds interesting, poor direction and bad storytelling techniques make the movie rather unsatisfactory to watch.

Amongst the many tragic realities we face in this world, there is perhaps no horror greater than that of losing a child. In the Shudder Original movie From Black, director Thomas Marchese seeks to explore the depths of such an affliction and offer a dark and supernatural alternative to the healing process.
When confronting the stages of grief, there is no blueprint for how long that process should take. This is how we are introduced to Anna Camp’s (True Blood) Cara, a young mother whose former drug use led to the disappearance of her son Noah seven years prior. Alienating herself from others, she begrudgingly attends a support group while holding on to the guilt of her failed motherhood. A fellow member of the group, Abel, offers her an impossible opportunity: a chance to bring her son back. Desperate for resolution, Cara gives in to the outlandish temptation and...

Anna Camp spent the last few years doing something sort of crazy for an actress who loves to work: saying no.
When “Pitch Perfect 3” hit theaters in December 2017, it marked the (maybe) end of the franchise with which Camp is still most closely associated. The half-billion dollar juggernaut about an all-female group of a cappella singers charmed audiences and thrust winsome mashups (Jessie J and Simple Minds?) into the cultural zeitgeist. It also gave Camp and her co-stars Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow, and Rebel Wilson the roles that made their careers.
But, as often happens, the series’ popularity threatened to typecast Camp. Her inbox flooded with offers for other type-a achievers, just like her “Pitch Perfect” part Aubrey Posen — a character so uptight that we first meet her as she pukes her guts out during a particularly stressful competition.
That was enough to make Camp nearly quit the industry.

The same goes for the Shudder Ressurected series next month. I'm positive I've seen just about every Slumber Party Massacre movie there is but somehow Richard Attenborough's Magic has eluded me. I get to make up for that in April. All the release information follows. Premieres Kids Vs Aliens Directed by Jason Eisener Streaming on Shudder April 14th (Available in US,...
