One of the interesting things about getting older as a movie fan is that – at some point – you realize that folks you once considered young up-and-comers suddenly aren’t so young many more. Granted, Michael Angarano is only five years younger than me, but for some reason, when I think of him, I immediately picture him as the likeable teen star of Sky High – an underrated Disney superhero flick from the 2000s. Of course, he’s been around for twenty years since then and has never stopped churning out good work, with him especially good on Steven Soderbergh’s The Knick, and the short-lived Showtime drama, I’m Dying Up Here.
Last weekend, Angarano released his feature directorial debut, Sacramento, which he also wrote and stars in. In it, he plays a young man coming to terms with the fact that his perpetual, everlasting adolescence is coming to an inevitable end.

Michael Angarano has been acting since he was an infant and has a long resume of memorable work in both comedic and dramatic roles—Almost Famous, Will and Grace, This is Us, Gentlemen Broncos, Oppenheimer, to name a few. His latest is a wonderful comedy with a lot of heart that he stars in, co-wrote and directed called Sacramento. On this episode he talks about the long road of getting that film made, how he needed to adjust once he saw Michael Cera’s approach to the role, and the interesting realization that he may not need to act and direct and […]

Plot: Following the death of his father, energetic and free-spirited Rickey convinces long-time friend Glenn to go on an impromptu road trip from Los Angeles to Sacramento. Frustrated by Rickey’s Peter Pan complex, Glenn is encouraged by his pregnant wife Rosie to go on the adventure to reconnect. In the worn yellow seats of Glenn’s old college convertible, the two men confront their anxiety-ridden lives, addressing past mistakes and questioning what their futures hold.
Review: Sacramento has an equal amount of sweetness and sadness that it tries to balance. Starring two actors who spent their early careers in Hollywood playing teenagers, Sacramento shows us Michael Cera and Michael Angarano as what could be adult versions of any number of characters from their past projects. Co-written and directed by Angarano, Sacramento is a successor to films like Superbad if they were made through the lens of Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain.

Michael Angarano and Michael Cera have been on screen for most of their lives. Both former child actors, each grew into an adult in front of audiences during the aughts — for Angarano, as Sean Hayes’ son in “Will and Grace” or the nepo-superhero of Disney’s teen actioner “Sky High”; for Cera, in the meaner streak comedies of “Arrested Development” and “Superbad.” But that particularly intense spotlight — being the on-screen representation for a millennial generation then coming into consciousness — is less of a burden in their mid-thirties.
“Almost 20 years ago, I would get really anxious walking by a high school because the kids would know who I was and they create a frenzy of energy that you’re not able to withstand. But now I feel very comfortable walking by a high school, because I know they have no idea who I am,” Cera says with a laugh.

American movies overflow with arrested-development cases. (There’s something very American about that.) Yet it’s not every day that you see an engaging indie comedy about “adulting” — that is, characters of a certain age who are still sealed inside the youth bubble, to the point that they regard conventional grown-up activities like holding down a job or taking care of another person as beyond-their-pay-grade endeavors.
The smart and fluky “Sacramento” is that kind of movie. It’s been called a road comedy, and technically it is, if you count as a road comedy a film in which the two main characters are old friends who may no longer even like each other, who climb into a vintage gold Chrysler Imperial — the car they shared in their youth — and drive from L.A. to Sacramento, a trip that takes all of six hours (and occupies about 25 minutes of the movie).
Why are they going there?...

The King of Kings will be Angel Studios’ top opening since juggernaut Sound of Freedom in 2023 and may well beat the reigning champ for highest-grossing faith-based animated debut, besting DreamWorks Animation’s The Prince of Egypt from 1998. Deadline asks distribution chief Brandon Purdie about the response from audiences and theaters.
Michael Angarano, writer, director and star of road trip comedy Sacramento, unveils the 10-year genesis of his second feature, out today in moderate release. The Minecraft-fueled box office is looking much brighter after that grim first quarter.
With an estimated $15 million in presales, The King of Kings boasts the widest opening weekend of any Angel Studios’ film, at 3,205 theaters. “We’re excited,” Purdie said as the film eyes a possible No. 2 spot at a domestic box office that surged into action last week.

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2024 Tribeca Festival. “Sacramento” opens Friday, April 11, 2025.
As someone who’s old enough to have seen the likes of “Superbad” and “Youth in Revolt” when they first opened in theaters, it’s hard not to feel a little unstuck in time as I watch millennial teen icon Michael Cera make the gradual transition towards dad roles. I was completely unfazed by the fact that he became a father in real life, but there’s something kind of fourth-dimensional about watching an actor grow up on screen while their most famous characters stay the same age forever. It’s an uncannily vivid illustration of the vertigo we all experience as we get older — how can you be on the brink of 40 when you’re also still 18?
But some things never change, and coming of age in tandem with an actor like Cera reminds you of that too.

President Donald Trump has backed down from his reciprocal tariffs on Wednesday after days of market fretting and concern at home and internationally (at least for now), but for Hollywood, some of the industry’s biggest problems started well before Trump ever announced his so-called “Liberation Day.”
As IndieWire previously reported, Hollywood productions are moving overseas at an alarming rate, as the cost of doing business has made it cheaper to fly someone overseas than to film in your own backyard. Some executives have pointed to unions, while others say it’s largely a need for tax reform, as countries like Ireland or Hungary offer large tax credits as a pure percentage of a film’s budget, so the difference in recouped savings could be millions.
The irony of Trump’s tariffs is that they would have been more likely to drive Hollywood film production out of the U.S.

Michael Cera is set to star in the new adaptation of Stephen King's The Running Man from director Edgar Wright. The two previously worked together on 2010's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which celebrates its 15th anniversary in 2025.
Cera's current project is the action road comedy Sacramento, which premieres in theaters on April 11, with Michael Angarano starring, co-writing, and directing. In an interview with Cbr's Grae Drake, Cera discussed Angarano's directorial style and compared it with Edgar Wright. "It's so different, because obviously such different kinds of workand like approaches to it," he said. "Likeworking with Edgar is interesting, because you well, he has his editor, Paul Machliss, on the set all the time, and like, cutting in real time."
"So you see back what you just shot," Cera continued. "And they also save a lot of, you know, they don't ever have to come back for reshoots,...

With a plucky, inherent likability as a performer that extends to his leisurely directorial aesthetic, Michael Angarano’s second feature Sacramento is an amiable, freewheeling road trip dramedy that rides on its central performances, courtesy of Michael Cera and the actor-writer-director as strained best friends. In exploring fatherhood, mental health, and the lies we tell ourselves (and others) to keep trucking along, Angarano and co-writer Chris Smith haven’t uncovered a wealth of revelations on tried-and-true thematic ground, yet there’s just enough smart comedic timing and dramatic perceptiveness to make this an adventure worth taking.

With 2007’s Superbad, Michael Cera co-starred in what is arguably the defining coming-of-age comedy of the 2000s. While first and foremost being one of the funniest movies of recent memory (does 2007 still count as recent?), it also had a lot to say about growing up, and what graduating high school means as you transition into your first steps of adulthood.
And now with the Michael Angarano-directed Sacramento, Cera takes a stab at one of life’s great miracles — and great challenges: becoming a dad. And while it doesn’t have anything especially deep or revelatory to say, it hits all the beats expected of such a movie and hits them well enough and with enough sincerity to make it work.

A couple of guys who’ve known each other since childhood but grew apart as adults decide to pack up their shared past and plentiful neuroses and take a trip together. Michael Angarano’s road-trip dramedy plots a similar course to Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain, and even sees him filling the same writer-director-star role as Eisenberg did in a story that revolves around a similar double act: Angarano plays an outgoing, unreliable type opposite Michael Cera as his more introverted, family-oriented friend. And while Sacramento is a sunnier, slighter affair than A Real Pain, it still makes for a pretty nice ride.

Exclusive: Toronto-based boutique distributor Game Theory Films has acquired Canadian rights to Captain Newfoundland, a feature documentary exploring the legacy of late idiosyncratic media mogul and mystic Geoff Stirling.
The feature, which has recently begun production, is directed by Jamie Miller and Mike Feehan and co-produced by St. John’s-based Seachange Films and Toronto-based 86 Media House.
Stirling was born in the Newfoundland and Labrador capital of St John’s in 2021 when it was still an independent province. He died in 2013.
After studies at the University of Tampa, he freelanced for Time and The Chicago Tribune, before returning home to set up the province’s first newspaper, The Newfoundland Herald, in 1946.
He went on to set up the independent TV station Ntv (Newfoundland Television) in 1955, which punched above its weight as a broadcasting pioneer in terms of its resources, becoming the first Canadian station in 1972 to broadcast around the clock.

Michael Cera and Michael Angarano hit the road in the comedy Sacramento.
Vertical released the official trailer for the upcoming film Sacramento on Thursday. The trailer shows pregnant Rosie (Kristen Stewart) encouraging her husband, Glenn (Michael Cera), to reconnect with his estranged friend, Rickey (Angarano), after his dad dies. Together, they go on a California road trip and reflect on their past.
The Sky High star directs the road trip comedy and stars in it with Tallie (played by Maya Erskine), his real-life wife. Angarano also co-wrote the film along with Chris Smith. Leslie Braun serves as the executive producer.
While the road trip comedy is Cera and Stewart’s first project together, it’s a reunion for Angarano and Stewart, who starred together in 2004’s Speak, where they met. The pair then dated in real life from 2005 to 2009.
In June, Sacramento, which is Angarano’s second directorial effort, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Cera is one of two cast members to have signed on for roles on Wright's take on The Running Man. The Barbie actor will play a character described as a "nave rebel who tries to help" Ben Richards, a father who needs money for his sick daughter, leading to him competing in a deadly game show where survivors are gifted with a huge cash prize. Also joining the cast alongside Cera is Emilia Jones (Locke & Key), who will play a "privileged woman blind to the oppression of the government opposite Powell's Richards."

Kristen Stewart's diverse filmography post-Twilight showcases her acting talent, disproving critics' initial assessments. Bella Swan, the character Stewart portrayed in Twilight, is the main issue, not Stewart's acting abilities. Stewart's notable post-Twilight roles include Still Alice, Spencer, and upcoming films Sacramento and Flesh Of The Gods.
Kristen Stewart's career proves one Twilight movie criticism has always been ridiculous. Stewart has a lengthy career with 50 films spanning more than two decades. Even before her breakout role as Bella Swan in Twilight, Kristen already had a few movie roles under her belt, including Sarah Altman in Panic Room and Jess Solomon in The Messengers. However, the Twilight Saga, based on the books by Stephenie Meyer, really made her career take off. New York City's annual Tribeca Festival always brings something for everyone: from its series of short films made by all the most promising up-and-coming talent to several documentaries about a wide range of topics to the buzzy narrative features both international and close to home, all vying for Tribeca's various top prizes. Co-founded by none other than acting legend Robert De Niro in the aftermath of 2001's 9/11 attacks in an effort to revitalize the Tribeca neighborhood located in Lower Manhattan, the film festival has carefully curated its own identity over the years. While its famous big brothers like Cannes, Sundance, and the Toronto International Film Festival will always receive the bulk of attention, Tribeca tends to feel like the scrappy, blue-collar breeding ground for all the most under-the-radar offerings that the indie system has to offer.
This year's event was no exception, providing all sorts of opportunities for the curious and open-minded moviegoer.

"Nice dick!" It doesn't take long to realize that "Sacramento" might just be the funniest — and most charming — surprise of the year. Some indie films take a little while to get going, opting for a meandering and slow-burn approach that can test the patience of even the most seasoned moviegoer. This is not that kind of indie.
Right from the meet-cute opening between Maya Erskine's Tallie and co-writer/director/star Michael Angarano's sunbathing Rickey by a picturesque lake, Erskine's first line of bawdy dialogue shouted across the water perfectly sets the tone for everything that comes next. Although the adorable pair and their palpable chemistry (both are now married to one another after meeting during production) make a convincing case for an entire rom-com following these endearing characters, "Sacramento" swerves into unexpected territory with a "One Year Later" title card ... and an abrupt reset introducing Michael Cera and Kristen Stewart,...

“Hey Mom, did you feel emotional the first time you drove in Sacramento?” asked Saoirse Ronan’s titular character in “Lady Bird” during an impassioned final monologue that makes the streets of the Californian capital glow. The city provides a similar site of reconciliation between a pair who’s grown gradually estranged in Michael Angarano’s “Sacramento.” It feels emotional, too, albeit in a more familiar way.
That’s not necessarily a knock on the film.

Making an independent film is hard. It takes time and patience and perseverance, but when you’ve been in the movie business most of your life like Michael Angarano has, you learn to live with the uncertain times in order to push through to the moment where you can get in front of the camera. His sophomore film, “Sacramento” — a road movie/buddy comedy that just premiered at the Tribeca — faced its own stumbling blocks on the path to production and distribution, but through it all, Angarano held firm, knowing he had to make the film no matter what.
“At one point we were ready to shoot the movie in Atlanta — we had the financing and everything,” said Angarano in a recent interview with Variety. “And this was for a movie called ‘Sacramento.’ But it’s like why try to cheat it? Maybe, should we just call it ‘Athens’ or ‘Savannah’?”

‘Sacramento’ Review: A Charming Exploration Of Anxiety, Friendship And Fatherhood – Tribeca Festival

In Michael Angarano’s heartfelt comedy-drama Sacramento, the journey of self-discovery takes center stage. Co-written by Angarano and Chris Smith, this indie film embraces character-driven storytelling, preceding grandiosity for intimate moments. The movie is an exploration of friendship, fatherhood and the struggles of mental health, wrapped in a blend of humor and sincerity.
The film opens with a light, almost idyllic scene: Ricky (Angarano) is sunbathing by a lake, only to be interrupted by Tallie’s (Maya Erskine) cheerful call. Their playful interaction sets a fun tone, but the narrative quickly pivots to a year later, where we meet Glenn (Michael Cera). He’s meticulously built a baby crib that collapses under his weight. This symbolizes his crumbling confidence as he faces impending fatherhood. Rosie (Kristen Stewart), his supportive wife, reassures him, yet Glenn’s anxiety lingers. Ricky, with his domineering and carefree personality, contrasts sharply with Glenn’s high-strung demeanor.

When Michael Angarano was trying to get “Sacramento,” his indie buddy comedy about two friends who go on a road trip to a certain state capital off the ground, the question he’d get was always the same. Does it really need to be set in Sacramento?

Exclusive: Ahead of its June 8 world premiere at the Tribeca Festival, the road trip buddy comedy Sacramento, directed by and starring Michael Angarano (Oppenheimer), has been acquired by Vertical for distribution in North America, the UK and Ireland later this year.
In addition to Angarano, the starry indie’s cast includes Michael Cera (Barbie), Kristen Stewart (Love Lies Bleeding), and Maya Erskine (Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith). The film tells the story of Rickey (Angarano), an energetic and free-spirited young man with a Peter Pan complex who, following the death of his father, convinces his long-time friend Glenn (Cera) to hit pause on his blissful domestic life and embark on an impromptu road trip across California.
Angarano penned the screenplay with Chris Smith, and they produced the film alongside Bee-Hive Productions’ Stephen Braun, the Wonder Company’s Chris Abernathy and Eric B. Fleischman, and Sam Grey. Irfan Siddiqui served as associate producer.

Kristen Stewart is returning to vampire movies with her next project, Flesh of the Gods, reports Variety.
Co-starring Oscar Isaac, the thriller comes from director Panos Cosmatos, whose ultraviolent Mandy was one of the best films released in 2018. The screenplay was written by Andrew Kevin Walker, best known for his work on Se7en and more recently, David Fincher’s The Killer. Adam McKay is among the producers.
Per the official logline, Flesh of the Gods follows the married couple Raoul (Isaac) and Alex (Stewart) who “descend each evening from their luxury skyscraper condo and head into an electric nighttime realm of ‘80s LA. When they cross paths with the mysterious and enigmatic woman known as Nameless and her hard-partying cabal, Raoul and Alex are seduced into a glamorous, surrealistic world of hedonism, thrills, and violence.”
In a statement, Cosmatos added that the film “inhabits the liminal realm between fantasy and nightmare.
