The lineup for the 77th Cannes Film Festival has officially been unveiled. As of right now, 19 films will be competing for the prestigious top prize, the Palme d’Or. The festival will be running from May 14 through the closing ceremony on May 25 in the small town on the French Riviera. This year’s jury will be led by Greta Gerwig, fresh off of her success writing and directing “Barbie,” which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. The remaining members of the jury have yet to be announced.
Having an idea of a filmmaker’s history at the festival can sometimes help give us an insight as to who could be in the best position to take home the Palme. For example, two of this year’s entries come from filmmakers who have previously claimed the Palme. Another five are from directors who have won prizes in official...

Amazon MGM has announced (via Deadline) that they will be giving the thriller Pussy Island a global theatrical release on August 23rd – but, to the shock and surprise of no one, they’re not actually going to be releasing the film under the title Pussy Island. The Florida Project director Sean Baker has come on board to executive produce Modern Whore, Nicole Bazuin’s documentary adaptation of Andrea Werhun’s sex work memoir.
The feature-length hybrid film is currently shooting narrative re-enactments as part of a doc based on Modern Whore: A Memoir, a 2022 book that recalled Werhun’s work as an escort and in strip clubs, for which Bazuin provided extensive photography.
The illustrated memoir in turn sprang from a 2020 short film Modern Whore that Werhun starred in, Bazuin directed and which had its world premiere at SXSW. The Modern Whore feature documentary will be told from Werhun’s perspective and have her portray her former escort alias Mary Ann and her stripper persona Sophia, as well a more recent foray into OnlyFans as part of her sex work career in Toronto.
The indie will also incorporate writing and collaborations with other sex workers telling their own stories.

2023 may not have been an excellent year for movies, but in spite of everything stacked against it (read: greedy conglomerates run amok), it turned out to be an excellent year of movies. While the fallout of the recent work stoppages will be felt for time to come, some of 2023’s losses will prove to be 2024’s gains, as much-anticipated but strike-delayed films like “Dune: Part Two,” “Drive-Away Dolls,” and Luca Guadagnino’s horny tennis drama “Challengers” have all secured fresh release dates in the first half of the new year.

Cristiano Ronaldo has the most followers on Instagram. Elon Musk claims that title on his platform X (naturally). And Letterboxd has Martin Scorsese.
When he joined in October, shortly after his film “Killers of the Flower Moon” hit theaters, the director quickly became the most-followed account on the burgeoning social media platform, which allows users to rate and review movies, create lists and follow their friends. The director — or whichever canny member of his team is behind the account — doesn’t use the platform as a viewing diary though. Scorsese’s inaugural post was a list of 59 titles cited as companion texts to his own work. In the weeks since, he’s shared a second list of his favorite wide-screen movies.

Neon is getting in the Sean Baker business. The indie studio behind Parasite has taken North American rights to Baker’s romantic-dramedy Anora.
Mikey Madison stars in the film, which shot earlier this year in Brooklyn and is in post-production with an eye for a 2024 release. The plot is being kept under wraps, but Baker is known for crafting low-budget features examining people overlooked by society that emerge as critical hits and awards contenders. His filmography includes Tangerine, The Florida Project and Red Rocket, which he shot during the pandemic for around $1 million. Baker produced his latest film with Samantha Quan and Alex Coco, with Anora sporting a a slightly heftier budget than his previous features.

Neon has acquired the North American rights to Sean Baker’s latest film, “Anora,” starring Mikey Madison, Mark Eydelshteyn, Yuriy Borisov, Karren Karagulian and Vache Tovmasyan. The synopsis is being kept under wraps, but Neon is referring to it as a “romantic dramedy.” The movie was shot in 35 mm by cinematographer Drew Daniels with filming completed earlier this year; it is currently in post-production. “Anora” follows Baker’s 2021 film “Red Rocket,” which starred Simon Rex and premiered at Cannes and his 2017 film “The Florida Project,” which garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Willem Dafoe’s sensitive turn as the manager of a rundown Orlando motel. Malia Obama, Oscar-winning directors The Daniels and “The Mandalorian” star Pedro Pascal were just a few of the notables who turned up in force for the first Los Angeles screening of A24’s holocaust drama “The Zone of Interest” on Tuesday night.
The intimate gathering at West Hollywood’s London Hotel was something akin to a bucket of ice water in a social Mojave, as the ongoing Hollywood strikes have shuttered red carpets and made party RSVPs into war room fodder for talent publicists and studio communications executives.
But “Zone of Interest,” from indie darling Jonathan Glazer, would not be ignored. Jamie Bell and Kate Mara, Simon Rex (“Red Rocket”) and DGA president Lesli Linka Glatter were all spotted mingling with the director and the film’s male lead Christian Friedel. Filmmakers David Lowery (“The Green Knight”), Catherine Hardwicke (“Twilight”), Hiro Murai (“Atlanta”), Raven Jackson (“All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt...

Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn” brings style, swag and a whole lot of Barry Keoghan’s manhood to the award race. After having its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on Thursday night, festivalgoers were in for a wild bonanza of colors, lights and one of the sexiest films to grace the big screen so far this year.
Fennell’s previous film as a director, 2020’s “Promising Young Woman,” was a hit with Oscar voters, scoring five nominations, including one for best picture. But “Saltburn” looks to be much more divisive with critics and audiences.
“Saltburn” follows a college student named Oliver (Keoghan), as he finds himself drawn into the world of a charming and aristocratic classmate (Jacob Elordi) after he is invited to his eccentric family’s sprawling estate for a summer.

It is a rare thing when just the studio attached to a movie can get butts in seats, but that is just what Independent Film Company A24 has done since they were formed in 2012. From humble beginnings with the Roman Coppola directed A Glimpse Inside The Mind of Charles Swan III to break out hits like Ex Machine and The Witch. More recently the studio became the first one to ever sweep the top six awards at this past years Oscars when their films Everything Everywhere All At Once and The Whale took home Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director and Best Picture. As their latest film Talk To Me continues to put up impressive numbers at the box office, we wanted to know: What A24 releases has been your favorite? We compiled a pretty comprehensive list, but if you don’t see your favorite listed,...

HBO's new series "The Idol" follows Lily-Rose Depp as Jocelyn, a pop star getting ready to stage her comeback. If that sounds too basic, don't worry. The series follows Jocelyn as she gets wrapped up in a cult run by Tedros Tedros, played by The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye. Jocelyn's story has some real-life analogs, though the fictional pop star isn't based on any one specific singer. And as viewers get to hear Jocelyn's music for the first time, they might wonder if that's really Depp singing in the show. In fact, fans of the series may be curious about other cast members' onscreen vocals, as well.
Is Lily-Rose Depp Singing in "The Idol"?
Yes, Depp is providing Jocelyn's singing voice - and she was really nervous about it.
For her audition, Depp had to sing a cappella. She sang a minute of the song "Fever." "I thought, Here's where I don't get called back,...

HBO’s upcoming series The Idol has gone through at least one major creative overhaul since it was announced, with co-creator Amy Seimetz leaving the show in April 2022. Euphoria’s Sam Levinson and Abel Tesfaye (The Weeknd) then took over as creators for the series, reshaping it to fit their vision and the version of the show set to premiere June 4, 2023.
We don’t know much about the series, other than HBO’s official logline that reads “After a nervous breakdown derailed Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) last tour, she’s determined to claim her rightful status as the greatest and sexiest pop star in America. Her passions are reignited by Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye), a nightclub impresario with a sordid past. Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or the deepest and darkest depths of her soul?”

The Sweet East Review: A Patchwork Of Curiosity, Connection, And Beautiful Strangeness [Cannes 2023]
When Andrea Arnold's "American Honey" debuted at Cannes in 2016, the world was ushered into a whirlwind of hopeful, harrowing, and empowering Americana that reshaped the emotional core of what it means to find yourself in a vast sea of new experiences. The next chapter in the Americana film canon, cinematographer-turned-director Sean Price Williams' "The Sweet East," takes the best of those elements and turns them on their ears, weaving a patchwork quilt of curiosity, connection, and unadulterated strangeness. It takes things, and I mean all things, a step further than past films of its type — and it makes sure its audience is along for the ride in all of its odd and audacious glory. After all, there is nothing more arduous and beautiful than living life, and there is certainly nothing stranger.

‘The Sweet East’ Review: ‘Good Time’ Dp Sean Price Williams Hits the Road in Promising Feature Debut
Festival reviews just love to hype a breakout performance, to the extent that one worries about becoming the little critic that cried breakout. But here goes: Talia Ryder, lead actor in “The Sweet East,” is a star. There’s something of Kristen Stewart about her, not merely in terms of physical resemblance, but more in her gift for not just acting but reacting. That’s fortunate, because her character is generally surrounded by extremely chatty blowhards, most of them interested only in the role she might play for them in their own lives. She lies constantly about her identity and where she’s from, and these lies go down easy because nobody is particularly invested in who she might actually be — they’re too keen to fit her into their own mythology.

The Match Factory has acquired international sales rights on U.S. cinematographer and filmmaker Sean Price Williams’s feature directorial debut The Sweet East ahead of its world premiere in Directors’ Fortnight in May.
Written by the film critic and programmer Nick Pinkerton, the movie is described as a picaresque journey through the cities and woods of the Eastern seaboard of the United States undertaken by Lillian, a high school senior from South Carolina who gets her first glimpse of the wider world on a class trip to Washington, D.C.
Separated from her schoolmates, she embarks on a fractured fairy tale travelogue into America, where she is granted access to a variety of the strange factions that proliferate the present-day unreality of contemporary life.

Can You Stream Joaquin Phoenix's 'Beau is Afraid' Now? When Will It Be Available to Watch From Home?
A24’s newest movie is heading to theaters this week! Its newest title is “Beau is Afraid,” starring Joaquin Phoenix, and the film looks every bit as quirky and off-the-wall as past A24 titles like “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “The Disaster Artist.”
The movie features Phoenix as a paranoid man who embarks on an epic journey to get to his mother’s house. Beau is incredibly anxious, but with his newly-prescribed medication he thinks he can handle the walk. What follows is a series of epic adventures, each more incredible and unbelievable than the last. But will Beau ever complete his goal of getting to his dear old mom’s?
The film currently sits at a 74% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics say the movie is a bit overstuffed, but Phoenix’s performance and director Ari Aster’s execution of his vision are enough to keep it more than watchable.

Their adventures lead them to cross paths with drunken costars, irreverent unhoused action heroes, unpredictable directors, super-agent, and power-mad moguls. Fame and fortune are not all they’re cracked up to be, and the two men must fight their way back to the things that matter the most.

Pete Davidson is returning to the Peacock Network — sort of. The former “Saturday Night Live” cast member is heading to Peacock for his new comedy series “Bupkis,” and the show has set its release date for May 4.
Davidson writes and stars in the series which — somewhat similar to his film “The King of Staten Island” — is based heavily on his own life, though unlike that Judd Apatow film, Davidson appears to explicitly be playing a fictionalized version of himself. Peacock describes the show as a “a heightened, fictionalized version of Pete Davidson’s real life,” one that “combines grounded storytelling with absurd elements from the unfiltered and completely original worldview for which Pete is well known.”
The series also stars Italian American acting legends Edie Falco (“The Sopranos”) and Joe Pesci (“Goodfellas”) as Davidson’s mother and grandfather, respectively. The show also features several guest stars, including Davidson’s “Bodies Bodies Bodies...

If they ever make a sequel to “The Celluloid Closet” — the landmark doc about the history of LGBT representation on screen — Lukas Gage should warrant at least two mentions. First, there’s the scene from the first season of “White Lotus” where Jake Lacy barges into the resort manager’s office, only to find Gage getting his salad tossed (a history-making moment for gay TV fans). And now there’s “Down Low,” an over-the-top, bottom-trawling comedy that wants to be for the gay community what “The Hangover” was to the mainstream — which is to say, wildly irreverent and incredibly wrong.
Starring openly gay “Heroes” villain Zachary Quinto as Gary, a recently divorced, richie-rich zaddy hoping for a happy ending, “Down Low” doesn’t quite understand its own title — code within the Black and Latino community for men who consider themselves straight while having sex with other men — but that’s Ok.
