So Far, The Worst Episode
claudio_carvalho26 October 2021
Nolan is in a difficult moment in his department when out of the blue his mother Evelyn arrives at his home. During a firearm exam in a shooting range, Nolan pays attention on a man shooting wearing a scuba gear and fails the test. Chen gives her car to Tamara and soon she finds that the teenager has sold the car to buy clothes and other stuffs. West witnesses the racist Doug mistreating a black family and he decides to report to Sgt. Grey that intends to retire. Lopez finds the connection between the shooter in the scuba gear and the notorious La Fiera that is visiting a college in Los Angeles for her son.

"La Fiera" is so far, the worst episode of "The Rookie". How a forty-six-year-old police officer accepts the awful treatment of his mother like Nolan does? The mushy relationship between Chen and Tamara is also terrible. The racist segment is despicable, and West should have paid an informal visit to his father to have some advice. My vote is five.

Title (Brazil): "La Fiera"

Show has become increasingly oh so woke and just so plotted, at the same time
Miles-1021 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Most of the characters' problems are too quickly resolved. If only life were this easy. John's Mom arrives with problems that have plagued their relationship for decades, but by the end, mother and son have a good talk, recognize that they are both tired of playing games and resolve to try to do better by each other.

Another officer has decided to save a homeless teen and, by golly, this problem appears to be resolved by the end, too.

Another civilian is having a baby, and the officer takes her to the hospital and sees it through until she has her baby safely. Doesn't this officer have other claims on her time?

John is trying to be helpful to a neighborhood, but he is constantly criticized by a resident for misplaced do-goodism and its unintended consequences. But they agree to work together by the end.

The only problem that isn't resolved in an hour is the problem of an aggressive cop who goes off on civilians, all of whom he assumes are gang members. Two cops go to their supervisor and urge him to do something about this cop. He decides to put the offending officer on desk duty, but by the end, he seems to have changed his mind and indicates he might do something more drastic about the bad cop. To be continued....

Very well acted, but the fast resolutions of the majority of issues is too pat. Left me saying, "Oh, come on."

Too Woke for some? GOOD!
japegwyn14 May 2021
Sure, it's mostly a fairly light-hearted show, bits of excitement and aomehwat soapy...

But certain events over the last year had put me off any modern cop procedural, even this one.

Television shows not only entertain, they also can reflect, and I, for one applaud the intentions behind the ongoing plot thread with Brandon Routh playing against type (major props to him for that), and the scene where it all goes sideways was quick, nasty and from my experience, pretty accurate as to how things can escalate in the blink of an eye.

NOT to run this plotline would be irresponsible showrunning, so absolutely ignore all those who condemn this as 'woke'... Then look up the definition which states that it's being aware of problems of others and in society as a whole.

I'm old enough to remember the brutal impact Roots had on my parents' generation - even people who thought they knew stuff and weren't racist had their eyes opened.

I think we all need to relearn those lessons... And shows like The Rookie can be at the forefront, and rightly so.

Give it time
spockside21 January 2021
We're only three episodes into a season that begins amidst a great deal of turmoil in our country, politically, legally, socially, you name it. I think The Rookie writers/producers are doing their best, and I hope that folks who complain of heavy-handed social justice themes will try to remember that. (Also, I saw the doctor/patient scene as a man dismissing a woman as "hysterical", typical of many such interactions, before I saw the potential racial aspect. So it fails on several levels.)

I did have a problem with Harper getting preachy about Nolan's mom when she doesn't know anything about her situation.

You can dislike but don't dismiss

Warning: Spoilers
This was a decent episode. I get that the storylines all had an uncomfortable common theme. I think the writers could have spaced them out across series better but don't accuse it of being woke when really it is just relevant. The story was still good. I was personally more upset by the guy in the wetsuit. :)

Being topical does not a bad show make
bpete33326 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Look this season of the Rookie is clearly taking a "ripped for the the headlines" direction so far this season. But, for me, it in no way makes the show less interesting or excellent. It's giving Jackson a lot of interesting obstacles as a character, as well as for Bradford and Ellis. In particular, the scene in this episode where Jackson confronts Ellis is one of the best scenes of the season. Everyone liked the twist with Harold Perrineau's character being dirty but are now all up in arms about former-Superman being a bad cop because it's taking the topical racism angle. This is just ridiculous. I want storylines that challenge the characters interesting ways, that's it. I don't care if it's political as long as it not on a soap box, and they're not doing that here. This is still a great show with plenty of humor and action to balance it all out. People need to calm down.

Laying it on a bit thick
reloaddcr22 January 2021
Start of this season is really disappointing. While I appreciate the writers taking on what is a very tough subject that really does need to be discussed and explored, I personally think a single story arc exploring issues of racism would have been far more powerful than shoe horning as many in as possible in every episode.

We watch to be entertained. Not to be preached to and I'm sorry, but that's the way it's coming across. I just hope it calms down because if it keeps going like this their preaching will destroy what is a very good show.

Stop whining
dizzymediainc1 February 2021
It's really sad to see so many whiners complaining about relevant topics being included in the show, just goes to show how many "all lives matter" or "trumpers" we have voting here, sad.

Anyways, this season has been really good, touching on important topics and doing so in a way that's entertaining and gets the point across, there's so much going on in the world and a good show covering those things, showing some glimmer of hope and not just whiners doing horrible stuff with their words and actions.

The Rookie is hitting all the hot spots and still going strong 3 seasons in, haters going to hate and whiners hate when they get called out on stuff that's real, relevant and happens everyday.

Get your nose out of the air and come back to reality lol

Lopez is the only thing worth your time
danamywise30 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The first two seasons of this show were amazing. Since season 3 started, everything has become political and race-baiting. Granted, I am not watching at the time it aired, so perhaps there was a "current affairs" reason that everything had to be about "white people bad."

The only redeeming thing about this episode was Lopez and her interaction with La Fiera. The show talks all the time about Nathan Fillion's character's moral compass being the strongest. The scene with Lopez and La Fiera talking about La Fiera's origin story and Lopez standing her ground that this was a one off pass, was powerful.

Too bad the rest of the episode was clogged in Bad White Cop Syndrome.

Strike 2
taedirish18 January 2021
The previous episode was a cheesy Hollywood take on the current political issue of police advise of power, this episode was all about how police view minorities AND even touched on how female minorities are treated unfairly. The entire episode was complete garbage. The writers are using the show as a political platform and it has ruined the show. The entire show is now about showing a "theyre not all bad" POV for police officers. Attention Hollywood writers, we already know that! When you pander to the audience, it seems lazy and ruins the show. I'm strongly considering giving up on this show after this garbage.

One of the best lines I've ever heard
maddie269717 February 2021
Sargent: You don't know what it was like for me and your father! You stand on our shoulders!

Jackson: and yet the water is still above my head.

Best. Comeback. Ever.

I'm so glad this show is taking a stand and talking about things that matter in the real world.

And then talk about it with my brother but now I just hope it gets cancelled, it is really really hard to watch it. Let's just end it and remember only 1st and 2nd season.

Woke is not a 4-letter word
drnikic19 August 2021
Ok, yes it is 🙂. But the people using it in reviews of S3 of the show mean it as an insult, like when they use "liberal" or "leftist".

Some don't like the fact the show has started addressing social issues, so they're whining about it. These are the same people who call others who bring these things up elsewhere "snowflakes".

If you don't like the show any more, don't watch. Perhaps you could write your own show and get it produced, where the poor oppressed straight white males get to finally be free, because I'm guessing the majority of people giving 1 star are at least any 2 out of 3 of that group.

Mixed feelings
hannahjhunter19 January 2021
While I am glad that the show is addressing the issues of police brutality, systemic racism and intersections of oppression, I fear that it is also harmful. The narrative suggests that it is a indeed a "few rotten apples" within the police rather than the institution itself that is the driving force of police brutality (particularly against BIPOC). I mean maybe I shouldn't watch a police show when I believe in defunding rather than reforming, but I am interested in how fiction relates to reality (and how our view of reality is influenced by fiction).

Cut Stanton a break...
sethprotus19 January 2021
He was once a Superman and punched a hole on the moon before he lost his vegan powers and got exploded by Michael Cera. That's enough to make anyone cranky. Now he's.a 40+ year-old police officer III yet to make sergeant like Tim. Don't hate on the show because it's too 'woke'. It's still not Discovery.
