A real surprise

Warning: Spoilers
A new Korean series based on a web toon, whatever that is, SWEET HOME surprises the viewer with a visceral assault on the senses and a great little set-up of a story. It's one that has a nightmarish feel to it as a bunch of truly interesting characters - all of whom are very well developed thanks to stylish direction - find themselves trapped in an apartment block by a bunch of sinister monsters. Action at the climax reminded me of THE MIST, but the character work is very Korean and what makes this first episode so engaging.

Are character names irrelevant?

Warning: Spoilers
Apparently names must be meaningless, because throughout the first episode I'm not sure I heard even one character name. At the moment I can only describe the characters based on what they are:

1. The loner that is a gamer, basically has no job and is suicidal 2. The security guard 3. The girl that wants to do ballet 4. The brother of the girl that does some kind of office job? 5. The bass player 6. The psychopath 7. The female fire department worker

Honestly for all of these characters I don't think I ever heard them use names within the first 45 minutes.

The gamer character seems to be the main character of the first episode. However he's is shown to be shot at (and hit) at the start and seems to have the "illness" that is creating the mutations. So should I even care about that character? It seems obvious that he will die.

The writers and showrunners seem to be focused on keeping various aspects of the "illness" or mutations or whatever it is that is spreading there hidden from the viewer. They're just throwing a bunch of secrets on screen and hope that you will care. But to make me care you should at least provide me with a few characters that I actually root for. So far I'm just confused and not in a good way.

I'll check out one or two more episodes to see where it is going. The first episode is not doing a good job to get me excited though.
