Five years and 51 weeks -- that's when I was added to the Slackerwood website, although my official first article about a beloved made-in-Texas film, True Stories, was actually published on June 24, 2009. Coincidentally, my first Slackerwood-related article, "Coffee and Cigarettes at the Alamo," was written two years earlier on June 25, 2007 for the Alamo Downtown Blog-a-Thon, co-hosted by Slackerwood and Blake Ethridge of formerly of Cinema is Dope and now the Museum of Cinema.
Sharing my personal experience of handling the Coffee and Cigarettes director Jim Jarmusch at the original Alamo Drafthouse (on Colorado) during SXSW Film Festival 2004 was truly a defining moment in my career in film journalism. That same year I recall Louis Black assisting at the door at a special midnight screening of Hellboy at the Paramount, with star Ron Perlman talking to fans outside the theater until the wee hours of the morning.

It’s a crazy, mixed up world and we are thankful for movies, sans The Tooth Fairy, that offer proof. Weekend Weirdness cocks its disoriented head to examine such flicks, whether it’s a new trailer for a provocative indie, an interview, or a mini review. In this installment: a look at the new DVD Know Your Mushrooms, a breezy doc on fungi, of the magic variety and otherwise, with music by The Flaming Lips; the latest news on The Human Centipede, the increasingly nefarious, pukey ass-to-mouth horror flick now officially on its way to the States; an NYC public access DVD from Beastie Boys' pal Ricky Powell; a Brooklyn premiere party, a Michael Cera music video, and more! Btw: The above family portrait, inspired by my number one film of 2009, Observe & Report, is the latest work in a series by artist and /Film fave Kirk Demarais. ...Buy it...

Ron Mann’s Know Your Mushrooms initially appears to be an elaborate act of misdirection. Mann got psychedelic icons Flaming Lips to contribute new music to his film, and previously directed the stoner classic Grass and the Woody Harrelson-lectures-you-on-how-to-live monstrosity Go Further, so viewers can be excused for expecting a documentary about the more magical, psilocybin-happy side of the mushroom experience. Yet for its first half hour, Know Your Mushrooms seems to be exclusively about mushrooms of the non-hallucinogenic variety. It’s a giddy infomercial for the misunderstood fungi, which Mann posits as the most wondrous substance since hemp (which ...

You know the word ‘quirky’? It has no real definition (google offers up the following gem: ‘far out’), but yet nearly anyone at all familiar with pop culture can readily identify films, books, and fashion trends with that level. To that end, there are many people who identify themselves with that term, and will purposefully support media solely on the basis that it is quirky (I have mountains of data supporting this claim). Know Your Mushrooms seems to be marketed exclusively to this demographic. It’s not that it doesn’t contain information about mushrooms; it’s just far more concerned with the weird details of the people and theories (that’s right, theories) that are even peripherally connected to mushrooms than it is convincing us that mushrooms are an at all worthy topic for a feature-length documentary. It’s a work that’s all fringe and no center.

Remember the Flaming Lips-soundtracked documentary that Peter shared the trailer for back in February? About the mushroom hunters Gary Lincoff and Larry Evans? Well, the Canadian doc is about to get some unique love.
To promote his new documentary Know Your Mushrooms, the CBC reports that Ron Mann is releasing the film on a customized Usb stick -- one shaped like a cute, tooth-filled shroom (seen to the right). I'd love to see DVD storage folks come up with a shelving unit for this.
Following a British company that released Ghostbusters on a 2Gb flash drive with digital rights management, the Toronto-based filmmaker is taking a more share-friendly approach. Basically, people buy these Usb keys for $59.99 -- which, I might add, are said to be almost sold out -- and are then encouraged to upload and share the film. Mann says: "We did this as a fun project. It wasn't a commercial venture.

We have new trailers for your viewing pleasure, all for films set to play at SXSW next month in Austin, Texas.
Know Your Mushrooms. Documentarian Ron Mann previously made Go Further, Grass, and Comic Book Confidential; now he turns his probing gaze to "a hunt for the wild mushroom and the deeper cultural experiences attached to the mysterious fungi." Featuring a "neo-psychedelic soundtrack" by the Flaming Lips, animation, and archival footage, the doc promises a "longer, stronger trip," but don't worry: its running time is only 73 minutes. In that spirit, the teaser trailer, embedded above, is only 45 seconds long.
Goodbye Solo. 'A cab driver picks up a routine fare, only to find his life turned upside down when the man he picks up asks him to take him to a remote mountaintop location, where he plans to jump to his death.' When it played at Toronto, Kim Voynar described it as "a thoughtful,...

SXSW is one of my favorite festivals of the year as it showcases some of the best and most innovative real independent films, and with this host of world premiers, it's also playing alot of Sundance material as well as genre fare from all over the world, many of which we've covered heavily in these pages.
From the Sundance lineup, we have films like Moon, The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, You Won't Miss Me, Grace, and Humpday, among others.
For the world genre material we've covered, there's Lake Mungo, The Square, Zift, and Awaydays.
I think you get the point that lots of great looking film will be playing. I'll leave a bit of the exploration to you..
Lineup after the break.
