How to (not) handle

This is a very sensitive and very fragile subject matter. Actually more than one. It's about bullying, but also about rape. Is bullying also covering online harassment? Maybe it is even more things that one can grip and realize after one viewing. What I can say is that this very likely will stir you up! It is quite likely that you will feel for the main character(s).

Having said all that, the movie has a slow pace that is necessary. It may say revenge in the title, but don't expect this to be a action packed thriller. This is way more subtle than that. Well done overall and something that might make you think about certain aspects of life ... we are supposed to care for each other, sometimes when you see certain human behavior you may seriously doubt that ...

It had potential, but...

Right, well the concept idea behind writer Blanche Chiang's 2020 movie definitely sounded interesting, and it dealt with issues that are very real on a daily basis for a lot of people around the world. Hence, I opted to sit down and watch "Hâ luô shàonû: Girl's Revenge" as I had the opportunity here in 2022.

Needless to say that I hadn't heard about this 2020 Taiwanese drama prior to stumbling upon it two years after it was released. And given my fascination with Asian cinema, of course I had to watch it. So I sat down to see what director Weica Wang had to offer with this movie.

I am sure that if you are a teenager and attending high school or college, then you will find much more appeal in "Hâ luô shàonû: Girl's Revenge" than I did, as a man well into my 40s. I found the storyline to be rather trivial and somewhat quite out there in terms of what seemed plausible, and just had a hard time getting into the atmosphere of the movie. And keeping track of the characters and their motivations just felt cluttered.

Yeah, so "Hâ luô shàonû: Girl's Revenge" wasn't really my cup of tea. But then again, I suppose I wasn't the right target audience for it, so go figure. It should be said though, that despite of the movie not really having any appeal to me, then it does deal with issues that are important.

The acting performances in the movie were quite good. I wasn't familiar with the cast that participated in the movie, but they did good jobs with bringing the story to life on the screen.

Ultimately then "Hâ luô shàonû: Girl's Revenge" was not a movie that fell into my liking.

My rating of director Weica Wang's 2020 movie "Hâ luô shàonû: Girl's Revenge" lands on a four out of ten stars.

Something of a surprise

I liked this. It just felt well done throughout, perhaps only unravelling a little at the end. It's a "teen" film but not dumbed down and manages to cover a lot of depth without being boring or patronising the viewer. Gentle subtlty combined with good writing and acting.
