Another Good Genndy Cartoon
babymanperson5 May 2023
Its about these magical warriors that lived long ago and they fight evil. This show takes place years later in 1890's England. This robot is going to certian people and balsting them with the spirit of those warrtoirs so the warriors can be reincarnated. Its a fun show. The art style is gerogous. The backgrougs look phenomical. The character designs are reminicent of Popeye. Which makes since because the creator loves Popeye and worked on a canceled Popeye movie for Sony. The characters so far are Malinda who was a princess but was turned into a witch. She can fly and can make magical blasts when she gets emotional. Capernicous the robot,Sung a cosmic monic who can fly. His head is litterally in the clouds, and Eldreid a warrior elf. Even though this show comes on adult swim now its a family friendly show.

"Medredleningston"

The master Tartakovsky brings us his pure passion project - two decades in the making - and it definitely has the unmistakable hallmarks of this sort of thing: richly complex lore and wildly unfocussed tone. The style here is idiosyncratic and fascinating, a Fleischeresque 30s fluidity that is more Boop than Jack, which takes some getting used to but is utterly captivating. As such it ends up this strange mash of melodrama and pure cartoonishness. It's sort of... deeply uncool, but I dig it. Whether we get the full four season vision when even die hard fans aren't that taken with it we'll see but I'd love to see the whole story!

The animation and backgrounds are beautiful
cardodavid13 May 2023
This is the type of show were you always want to gave a look at the background, it is so beautiful and full of details. Probably for those that just want a full of action toon this is not for you, this one for those that enjoy Easter eggs here and there. You can see that definitely they want to merge old style and modern animation and i love it!! The outcome is artistically really nice. The character development is kind of slow and not much have happened there until the 3rd episode where i'm now. FInally there are really funny 1 second moments i hope they keep these. The adult and child them is every where so it is a series for all.

not all that impressed yet
epgbeverly22 May 2023
Unlike MANY of the shows that Genndy Tartakovsky had some part in this unicorn: warriors eternal, is taking longer for me to warm up to, i am only on episode 4, but so far i am NOT very impressed, i am willing to give it more time and am hoping it will get better.

The steam punk theme is interesting and i must admit intriguing but the main characters are a bit flat and the advertisements that came out introducing the show gave away the villain.

The art is good a lot like samurai jack and the back ground characters are some times more interesting than the main characters, the back ground characters supply SOME humor and color all the while being placed in danger to supply the suspense, what little there is of it.

Amazing
The art, themes, and pacing of the story really keep you off your feet. Eyes glued to the screen capturing every detail as it goes from moment to moment. An amazingly fun universe with characters that could start a franchise along its hoped 4 season run.

The world is a uniquely rich genre setting that has never been told before, and so cohesively. The attention and dedication given to the show is clearly seen by the amount of effort made that has made rewatching the same season and experiencing new details every time widening any understanding of story. It shows how well written, thought, and blocked out it was.

The dynamics of characters were highly enjoyable, though even thr characters alone with their sole motivations are appealing on their own. The world is so engaging and an irrepetably unique experience. Also the it has its cute comidic moments.

Another masterpiece in my opinion.
bnwkdxr26 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm honestly just writing this because another review by user Doctor_Phill said "Copernicus, a "good guy", is probably guilty of several counts of manslaughter by the end of the episode, yet his recklessness is treated without either serious or comedic irony." I think they were referring to when Copernicus was attacked by a group of men who jumped on him in an effort to stop him from "hurting" Emma. Copernicus shakes them off and they all stand up obviously unscathed. If they had watched the second part of the 2 part premiere they might have realized that the awakened Emma was the one who actually hurt people in that situation. You're allowed to have whatever opinions you want but please don't spread false information just because you couldn't bother to pay attention.

6 misterous fox ladies out of 10
neacorp4 July 2023
The series feels like an animated movie padded out with extra episodes rushing to resolve some of the previous setups. All the while creating literal run in circles episodes in the end.

Things go downhill after KO of the main antagonist with everyone else unable to even stay alive to pick up the slack. Hero challenges become vague, contradictive, rushed, or outright dropped.

The setup is good, the art is great, starter characters are interesting, but after 20 years on the cutting room floor a lot of the best parts of the story was lost.

The writers need to go through the feedback and fan criticism before committing to season 2. Everyone likes the series premise, but not the second half execution coming up so short.

Very 80s
mslaurenjsauter20 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I love everything this guy creates. I'm just a little unsure as to why he seems to have ripped off Unico, a tale of a little unicorn. I get the entire 80s thing. I just thought he was so much more creative than this.

It's not a bad show, so far. But it seems pretty generic in a way I was not expecting. I'm 3 episodes deep and it mostly seems like something I can fall all asleep to at night while slowly turning the volume down.

The animation is honestly the saving grace of the show. It's ripped directly from 80s cartoons, so take of that what you will in terms of creativity. Let's just support good content while it's here, and get more anime back on the air.

Interesting premise but poorly paced
apelieuproar-693898 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Watched (most of) the first two episodes of this show. My interest is piqued but I have to say the pacing is not very good. Parts of both episodes were very obviously padding to fill out run time. I can only hope the pacing improves as the series progresses.

There is also the cliche of a character denying their newfound power, not wanting the power, being in denial of everything that is happening to her. It's just become all to familiar by now. Let's move on from this time-worn trope, please.

I like the animation overall, though some of the designs are a bit weird. What seems to be the main character looks a bit like Betty Boop. Whether this is intentional or just incidental is not clear. Anyway, it's a minor point.

Interesting plot!
merce-157487 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
There's a movie (name i can't exactly recall) that explores the topic of "reincarnated protectors" that i truly enjoyed the premise of so this was right up my alley. The Animation style is relatively unique is well so i'm interested in just how far that's pushed. My only issue(s) are that Melinda, seemingly the protagonist this story centers around, during the second part of the 1st episode premiere didn't really make sense to me? She (understandably) is confused about what's going on & pretty adamantly (so much so she physically pushes {or explodes} at different points) does not want this life. I find it poor writing that the second her fiancé shows up she all of sudden forgets 5 minutes prior she would've been happy to run off w/ him. She "says" she Melinda now but of course there's no true substance behind that statement as she spent the entire episode Not Wanting To Be Melinda. I just feel that part of the plot could've been better articulated because as a viewer it doesn't make sense. I understand that her mixed desire is a plot device to carry the story forward, I just wish it was done better as this is a compelling narrative otherwise. Outside of that, Melinda being a carbon copy 2020's version of an 19th century Betty Boop is a little.. disappointing. I mean you can draw/animate Anyone or Any features.......... why not be original when relatively everything else is?

Good Animation
jesperyrjan23 May 2023
I have so far seen 4 episodes.

The best thing about it right now is the animation and an interesting premise for the story.

The Character design reminds me of old cartoons like Betty Boop and Pinocchio, the backgrounds are really well done and the animation is smooth. The story is about a reincarnating trio of heroes where you follow their latest reincarnation which seems interesting.

And now for the bad parts.

The pacing is really weird. Some parts of the episodes seems drawn out just for everything to happen really fast later. And my biggest disappoinment right now is the lackluster voice acting a lot of the time. The character can show rage with their facial expression and body language but the voice can be a normal speaking voice, it just takes away from the experience too much for me.

I will continue to watch for now but will stop if it gets worse.

Update: I have now watched the whole first season and it get better towards the end.

Has great potential
delisiaj-0785519 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The animation style is beautiful. Your eyes will feast with delight on every scene. The storyline is familiar but it's very entertaining, you're going to want to know 'what happens next'. Minor dislike for the main female character. It's the same oh "l have powers and need to save the world but I don't want to" trope. That's a bit annoying. It makes her unlikeable in a way. She all "I don't want to save the world, it's not my fight." When she's forced (in a way) to fight and destroys a mother's home in the action of fighting evil. She's like" OMG I'm so sad because I care so much about everything and everyone." What a contradiction and it's annoying. Only on the fourth episode. I'm sure her character arch will develop her into something more likable.

Overall I'm invested.

Unfulfilled and left ambiguous in the worst ways
WretchWretch1 July 2023
Overall, visuals and audio wise. Stunning and magnificent. Genndy never misses when it comes to his style of animation and the people he chooses to produce the music and audio.

Story wise however, I can follow the plot easily, but it feels like there's just way too many skips inbetween that it's hard to realize why this thing is important, or this thing is not. The main antagonist only appears for about a few episodes, and then vanishes as something else entirely, and it's not even known if that even is the same main antagonist because it isn't said or implied. But I'm just assuming it is because why wouldn't it be, ya know? Overall, the story is alright, but just pacing wise and context wise, it's mish mashed about 50% of the time.

Characters are fun, they look interesting and appealing. Though, unfortunately, like I said with the pacing and context, it just is difficult to make a connection to who/what they are. The main characters mainly, we're just forced into them after them only having like a minute of backstory. I wish they established more of a ground with them rather than just shoving them right in our faces like, "These are the main heroes." And some characters are completely pointless. There were a couple of situations where we're introduced to one person, only for them to never be shown again.

In the end, the show has potential, but the fact that this show was 20 years in the making makes it feel like they were stuck in a specific mindset like it was 20 years ago. In all honesty, the show leaves little to be desired since it leaves on such a weird cliffhanger that makes the finale seem like it wasn't even a finale. Though, I will give it props of making it seem appealing and interesting despite all of these negatives, though when you compare it to other works by Genndy, the show fails hard.

6.5/10.

Maybe this one is just for kids?
Hazu2928 May 2023
Im a fan of Gendy. Samurai Jack (I even rewatched everything this year) is great, funny, cool, awesome art and writing. Primal, for me, is an absolute masterpiece, something very rare to get nowadays.

So, my expectations were maybe a little too high for this. But this show probably is for a different demographic, maybe it's just for kids?

In my opinion, just like its title, the show is a mess, I don't sympathize with any character yet, the writing is not funny or smart, it's just... childish. And the characters talk too much, way too much.

I'm still giving it a chance, some shows need time to get us hooked. I'm in episode 5... Watching it right now as a matter of fact, bored. Cheers.

My favorite show ever unicorn warriors Eternal
The show bring me to the Spotlight I like how the series is and I love the creator. The creator is so perfect for amazing animations like Dexter's laboratory samurai Jack and Primal but this show I like I'll give the show a 9 out of why nine out of 10 well, I was supposed to put 10 out of 10 but I decided by nine I know you people think it's a good show. It's amazing I know it's a good show but his animations are good. Keep up the good work. In my opinion it's kind of beautiful. It's good show. I'm in the air new episodes only Thursdays at midnight. Or are you watching the next day on HBO Max 's reviews awesome. Keep up the good work.

Gorgeous animation, mediocre plot.
birdbo9 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Doesn't the title really say it all?

I grew up watching Samurai Jack. My dad and I would tune in and watch every episode together. I still hold it in high regards as a staple of animated storytelling. So what happened?

I'll start with what I do like. Unicorn: Warriors Eternal shares some of the iconic Gendy artstyle, the gorgeous animation and thoughtful character design. The backgrounds are breathtaking, and the concept of using old cartoon/rubber hose style animation is appealing. I can appreciate the steampunk elements, too. I am fond of the fantasy atmosphere, and the concept of warrior souls being reborn across time to fight evil poses an interesting problem for the protagonist cast, especially Emma, who initially rejects this role. But oh boy, the pacing in this show is a mess!

From episode one, you're asking yourself, what is going on? It's all over the place. The action scenes are impressive, but often times things just happen out of nowhere. The dialogue isn't interesting. The characters themselves are disappointingly one-dimensional. All the depth and thoughtfulness of Gendy's previous works is gone. I understand that it's hard to work within the time restraints of an episodic format, but he's done it before! Maybe the concept was too broad for him to fully harness, but right now, it's just confusing. The plot is contrived, a pretty simple good vs. Evil, almost childishly simple.

Why is the villain a fox? What is the significance of the 9 tailed fox? Are we paying attention? What's the point?

Decent show, but not incredible. Watch it for the animation and not the story.

interesting worldbuilding, bad pacing and awful style
cvnzcesar17 June 2023
I'll preface this by saying that I've currently watched the series up to episode 8 (the last 2 have yet to be aired).

I love Genndys work. His last work, Primal, is one of my favorite works of animation. It has incredible style, animation, story and pacing. While U:WE has a cool overall plot, every other thing Primal got right is missing from this show.

1- Style: This show has a rubberhose-ish 30s style, but without any of the fluidity that came with the animations of the period. And I don't know how to put this, but it does not feel like the style is very well integrated with what it is trying to show. To put it simply - it looks ugly, with the exception of the backgrounds, which are good.

2- Animation: I am a fan of the art of animation, and I am an animator myself, so I think I may notice some things relating to animation too much. And I'll say that the action scenes are good (like 7/10). But for the majority of the time, the animation is simply awful. It feels clunky and cheap, like the studio was trying to limit the number of drawn frames to cut costs, and thought that motion graphics would make this imperceptible. It didnt. And I have nothing against motion graphics, I myself use them a lot. This was just badly done. And even the scenes with loads of frames end up not looking good, because their style of exaggerated motion end up just looking goofy and just... BAD, for a lack of other words. I think this show looked very good in the storyboard, but in order to look as good in motion, they should have used a more competent animation studio.

3- Editing: This one is short and simple: a lot of the scenes feel like they stay on screen for like 1-2 seconds too long. It ruins the pacing and the storytelling, and makes the characters feel like paper dolls or something, because they end up reacting to things in a very artificial manner. It feels like this show was written as well paced 18 minute-long episodes, and someone at the last minute said that the show has to be 20 minutes, so they slightly stretched every scene.

4- Insufferable Characters: I like Seng, and Copernicus is ok (he can't speak, and with the kind of dialogue writing in this show, that may be a plus). However, Melinda and her 2 lovers are just incredibly annoying. The behave like they are 12, when they are all adults and 2 of them are immortal beings hundreds of years old. I know they reincarnated into hosts that were too young, but even so. When you end up rooting for the evil people to be done with the main characters, you know you didnt do a good job.

I actually liked the worldbuilding (despite buing kinda tired of the steampunk thing) and I think that the characters have a lot of potential, but I feel like these 4 points cancel any of the good things with ease.

What was that?
americanidiot-915442 July 2023
I'm just... wow. That was really bad.

The animation is great and that's about it. The thing is that in spite of being animated there's a lot more to a show like this than just how it moves.

I personally abhor the artstyle, it feels like a bunch of random references to the old rubber hose style cartoons, which that artstyle combined with the modern animation style just looks uncanny.

The characters are incredibly poorly developed, there is just nothing there, sometimes there will be hints of it and then it'll be thrown away quickly.

Speaking of ideas being thrown away, that's all this series does, it just brings up ideas and concepts and then casts them away like they're nothing. By the time a question is answered 5 more take it's place. You think anything is answered by the end of the season? Nope!

By far the worst part is the pacing, the plot goes nowhere and it feels like random things happening for the sake of it, and then at the end it's like "now it's time for a new adventure!" As if anything was accomplished.

I gotta go apologize to The Primal Theory and Echoes of Eternity, they at the very least did the bare minimum of storytelling.

Seriously Genndy what happened? Your other work is amazing, this is just awful.

A miss for Tartakovsky
Doctor_Phil25 May 2023
I watched the entire first episode, but there wasn't a trace of intelligence anywhere. All signs point to a mindless good-versus-evil smash-up, with less nuance than a Marvel movie, and lacking the meditative moments, character studies, and life outside of combat that made Samurai Jack great. The animation is a comedic, childish style calling back to the 1940s, which stylistically rules out any serious stories. Yet there's no humor here, not even the gentle humor of Samurai Jack. Copernicus, a "good guy", is probably guilty of several counts of manslaughter by the end of the episode, yet his recklessness is treated without either serious or comedic irony. The writer and director seem to be unaware that anyone might actually be /thinking/ about what's happening.

TL;DR: A bizarre mash-up of childish ideas about absolute good and evil, antique comedic animation devoid of humor, and nothing the least bit interesting or original.

Everything Genndy is Known for is Nowhere to be Seen Here
thegreatflump2 July 2023
A show that seems too desperate to move on to the next idea before finishing figuring out what the point of the idea before even was.

There are so many plot points that are brought up and then dropped immediately and character motivations and lore that make no sense if you give them a minute of thought.

The action is incredibly generic with no sense of stakes or atmosphere (something Genndy is usually masterful with), the main cast doubles in size to by the end of the 1st season without exploring any one of them outside of Emma (Sen doesn't do anything of note the entire season), and the pacing is atrocious.

I truly don't know what happened here. Every aspect, except for the art direction, absolutely fails, making a final product that is below generic. Way too many ideas crammed together without thought. This show feels incredibly unfocused and rushed.

How did Tartovsky fall so far?
djsexyjesus28 May 2023
From the writer of Samurai Jack, Clone Wars and Primal, all stories that kept me transfixed, in the case of Samurai Jack, for several years. Even Symbiotic Titan, while not being the best was still better than this abomination. The animation looks like a mix of Cyborg 009 and Chowder and the characters were weak and poorly written. I am also at a loss how a show rated for 7 year olds ended up on Adult Swim. The action scenes take away from the elements that made Samurai Jack and Primal so good, Jack trained since he was a child with a magic sword and Spear was forged from his childhood into a hunter after watching his father ripped apart by Sabertooth cats. These characters just got shot with some pink magic unicorn laser and pew pew they are all the sudden magic. The steampunk trope tries a little too hard to appeal to the zoomers and has a very High Guardian Spice feel overall. Boring, campy and uncreative.

Weird directed with bored and long shots
yen_galvez6 May 2023
The premise is interesting, but I don't see the execution as successful.

The shots are too long. The dialogues are empty, without content. It could be silent and it would be better and even easier to understand.

There are situations that contribute nothing to the story. They don't even introduce characters. And they make the development very, very slow,

The animation however is very good. But again, the essence is lost with exaggeratedly long shots that sometimes become overwhelming, or repetitive montages that again do not contribute anything.

The same message is repeated 10 times. The first two chapters could have been summarized in 10 minutes.

I have to say that if the third chapter remains the same... I will stop watching the series. Because it gives me stress. In case it improves maybe I will raise the grade.

A flop
allmartyrs16 June 2023
I love Genndy Tatarovski and all of his works. For his wit, his crisp animation, telling stories with few (or no words), just through facial animation and a simple but gripping plot.

This show has none of this. The plot is increadibly meandering while letting us in on the "secrets" of the Eternal Warriors, the fights fill like fillers to Emma's "tortured" past, which we're all getting sick of by episode 6 and while the animation is good, the style is fugly and obtrusive.

Thank the heavens Primal was renewed for a third season, this can sink as creative revenge work cause his Popeye movie was tanked.

It's whatever
wonderboy8882826 June 2023
The voice acting is pretty bad all around. Several characters feel like they don't belong in the world due to their design. The story is just barely compelling. I feel like they weren't able to decide if this was going to be made for children or adults/young adults and the vibe jarringly vacillates. I'm aware that shows can pull off doing both, but this ain't it.

Apparently I need more words for this to post: Melinda's voice actor is especially bad. Honestly brings down every scene with how unengaged and boring she sounds. How is this person getting paid to do this? Makes me want to give it a shot.

How is this series so slow?
julianmarku2 June 2023
I am seriously questioning Gendy's ability to write a good story in a series format.

I can only hope that Gendy sold this show as a 90 minute movie because that is the only explanation for why every single episode is such a slog to go through. Every single episode there are like 2 things happening and no one is talking, no one is doing anything! These characters have known each other for a very long time and you expect them to talk about something, anything, but they don't, and as a representative of the audience I am here wondering: do you people even like each other?! Or is this a 9 to 5 job and everyone is your colleague?!

I am just so bored of everything happening. The art is... annoying. I AM JUST going to say it: it's annoying. But the writing too?

The ideas are there but no one seems to want to do anything with it. 6 episodes in and I am giving up on this series.

I am sorry Gendy, find someone to refine those great ideas, because you can eat a raw potato but that isn't the best potato.
