Madres

Honestly this film had the potential to be a lot better but it wasn't, it was super boring most of the time sure it kept me in agony and wanted to see what will happen next but at least 40 something minutes pass to show something scary only towards the end it got more intense but it had nice parts it was average overall.

Huh?
Draysan-Jennings13 October 2021
I have no idea what I just watched. Why is this labeled a horror film? Literally nothing scary about this movie whatsoever. Decent film quality but that's it. Don't bother with this one. 4 stars.

Should not be classified as terror
isaacochoterena11 October 2021
This movie doesn't work like horror, it feels more like a thriller.

The story is slow, the plot takes time to appear, it is very boring, the plot twist does not have much impact. The only thing that stands out is the performance of Ariana Guerra, which is very convincing. The film has a bad approach to the genre to which it belongs.

They can tell that it is classified as horror to attract more people to see it, but I think it works better as a thriller, although it is boring anyway.

Bait and Switch
mckfhnk18 October 2021
Was supposed to be a horror movie, instead turns out the entire movie is political. Once Rachel Maddow shows up at the end it lost all credibility. I am disappointed in the bait and switch. Hollywood is again loosing its touch in that people do not desire embdeed political messages or hidden agendas, we just want to be entertained ! This is why more and more I find enjoyment from movies overseas where the focus is entertainment, not brainwashing the audience !

Based on real events, not horror
Horror_Flick_Fanatic20 October 2021
I agree this isn't horror in the sense of make believe horror. It is based on real events that happened both within the continental United States and even in the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico which is an American protectorate and its inhabitances American citizens. I remember reading about eugenics that were conducted on the island three decades ago when I was a freshman in college. Clarence Gamble, heir to the Proctor & Gamble and Ivory Soap fortunes perform such operations from 1936 to 1960. Gamble was also notorious for medical experimentation. He expanded the distribution of oral progesterone, accepting donations from pharmaceutical companies who, unable to conduct trials in the US, bid for access to the women in his clinics on the island. Through the years Gamble, " was involved in initiatives in Israel, India, Hawaii, Egypt, Japan, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Pakistan, South Africa, and, in the US, Appalachia and the South, where he maintained that a reduction in the birthrate among African Americans was the solution to the region's poverty."

Back to the film, I also agree the ghost weren't necessary and did more harm that good. I also thought the ending was lame and very stupid. It's a shame this subject matter showed up in a Blumhouse flick when it really deserves to be told in a legitimate documentary.

Great thing about our current era is this stuff is now documented on the web and a Google search for: United States and Eugenics will bring up tons of detailed information. So much for the The Hippocratic Oath in the best national on earth, as they say. Umm, yeah.

Yay for politics! (Not really)
lwestraad-143-29054211 October 2021
I don't mind a good historical fiction, and horror can mix well with some of these types of stories, but this ain't it.

It started out well enough with some seemingly supernatural elements and the two main actors are ok even though the relationship between them as a married couple felt somewhat forced.

It eventually lost its way and morphed into some kind of boring history about reproductive mistreatment of immigrants in the 70's. (Thats a worthwhile story, but this isn't a documentary.) I would still have given it a decent 5 or 6 but then they tacked on Rachel Madcow at the end and that completely ruined any credibility the movie had.

Watch at your own risk lol & thanks for reading this review.

Leigh.

Enjoyable
gab-6759910 October 2021
Out of other Blum House movies I have seen this one is better than most. Based on a true story it was scary to think this really happened. So in a way it was a horror, just not in the BOO! Kind of way. Great leads, I could relate with Diana being a Hispanic but not knowing a lick of Spanish. I recommend if you like true stories.

Factual horror
serahserah21 October 2021
So this isn't a horror in the sense people who enjoy horror films would consider. The acting is weak and so is the script. HOWEVER the film highlights the horror that humans are willing to inflict upon each other and for that alone it is real horror.

We are the most vile creature walking this planet.

An Average but Not Bad Movie
karthika-589848 October 2021
The movie is definitely not as bad as the ratings indicate here, but the primary issue seems to be on classifying this movie as "Horror" but it actually falls under a different genre towards end. Viewers expecting horror feast would be disappointed for sure. It's based on true events (As noted in movie) in the 70's USA and would definitely not get everyone's agreement. But movie is watchable if facts shown towards end are acceptable.

Based on a true story?
mgools27 December 2021
As others have written, it is not a horror movie at all, but a drama. I don't want to spoil anything, but at the end you question if things events are actually true at all since the lawsuit was unsuccessful. They also try to make you think this practice is still going on, but to back it up they use a very small slip from Rachel Maddow, which in itself will also make you question the validity of the movie and "true" statement being made.

Horror From Blumhouse?
johnnyhbtvs278 October 2021
Hmm this one is presented as a horror movie when it couldn't be further from it. Rather bland film that at the end presents facts on screen making you wonder what you just watched. A lot of people will watch this and come away very annoyed especially during october expecting something that just isn't there.

Human done worse things than ...
THEgongoozler21 October 2021
Started like a half-English-half-Spanish version of ROSEMARY'S BABY (1968), this movie introduces a supernatural theme as a propeller to garner audience interest. Much criticism comes from those who believed MADRES (2021) is a horror flick but found out it actually is "political." They were angry and gave very negative comments. Why? What's wrong with movies contains political ideology, message, or, simply, events? A great percentage of all movies ever made in the world is political. Countless classics are political. Furthermore, this movie brings about a social and historical, not political, issue. The writer and producer have every right to present such issue in any art form.

The real problem is on the director's storytelling skill. There is almost no suspense (even the supernatural scenes), somewhat strange arrangement of characters (e.g. Why the sister suddenly appears at the end?), most dialogue is short and conveys little, probably half of it is in the dark so viewing is tiresome, etc.

The good thing? Ariana Guerra and Tenoch Huerta. Period.

Blessing, curse or ...
kosmasp27 March 2022
The message this has is .. an interesting and important one. But until it is revealed you have to endure a movie that keeps you hanging and guessing what is what. Not a bad thing in my book, but something that a few viewers may take issue with. That the story does not move along quickly enough.

Supernatural things occur or maybe they don't ... there are things you have to imagine happen ... on the other hand, the movie is quite clear on certain things ("real" or not so real). The performances are good and there are a few nice (scary) scenes that may get a reaction out of you ... not the best of the bunch produced by Blumhouse, but as you can tell I am not dissapointed either ... I am easy to please though, so maybe that doesn't mean too much. Still love the message, even if the real life implacations are more horrific than anything seen in the movie ...

Slow and political
brittany0210-595-11717419 October 2021
Slow and disappointing. This is all about politics and government. Wish I had known before and I would have not watched it. Started of a little interesting but the ending was really bad.

Not horror.
ansell-7287921 October 2021
Madres (mums in Spanish) is a fine movie but is not a horror movie. There is a reference to a curse and some business with amulets, but this is perhaps 3 minutes out of 82.

The movie is about eugenics. This is the improvement of the human race by 'biologically engineering' out undesirable human characteristics. In this case the undesirable characteristics are being Mexican. It is the stuff of horror movies but in fact the movie is a straight drama intended to prick the viewers social conscious.

Production values are good. The film is bilingual and subtitles are liberally used. The cast are committed and characters are well developed. Director Ryan Zaragoza has things well in hand.

We even have the obligatory text roll overs at the film's end summarizing the real statistics and data related to eugenics in the States. As I say, it is a fine movie but just not a spooky one despite its' genre being defined as horror.

Ridiculous
fdkbg29 October 2021
Ridiculous. As a Mexican American this movie is insulting. Movies that push a political narrative are the absolute worst. Don't waste your time because you'll never get it back.

Non-existent horror
Leofwine_draca16 March 2022
Another poor showing in the Amazon/Blumhouse series of horror productions. These seem to have been shot in enclosed sets with limited cast members and cheap storylines. This one's about a pregnant Mexican woman, living in California, who may or may not be haunted by a curse involving her unborn child. Nice to see the Mexican cast in this, but the horror is absolutely non-existent. The background, of forced sterilisation, is certainly an impactful one but it doesn't fit with the genre at all.

Not Horor; Pure Political Nonsense
booezoo21 October 2021
Misrepresented and a very simple (ridiculous) story line. You can see the ending coming halfway through- but I kept watching hoping I'd be wrong. And no scary parts at all-

However the two main actors are very good, especially given the poor material they had to work with! I hope they find better parts next time! And despite being annoyed by the movie not being described correctly, I must admit the clothing and hairstyles were pretty good!

Madres
forthemovies19 December 2021
A man and his pregnant wife move into a farming community to start there new life as a family but upon arrival his wife starts experiencing strange and horrifying visions.

Madres was a interesting film. I was intrigue at how the director influence came from real life facts about sterilization during the 20th century. The sound design of the film brought a eerie tone to the story which helps elevate the suspense of the film. Pacing was a bit slow then picks up when the main character uncovers the truth behind her haunted visions.

Overall the film was average, it was more of a informative film that had bits of horror to add to the interest and entertainment for the audience. Not a recommend watch but appreciated the films story.

Not a horror movie but still ok
erhanipekciler9 April 2022
Actually I thought that can be a short movie because it is so long for the basic story but still ok. There is no horror element in the movie last 10 minutes you can understand of the end but thanx God it is a happy ending.

By the way, end of the movie, info about sterilization so cruel!

Good Movie. Watchable.

It was a bit scary. It gave me goosebumps at one point when Teresa opened her mouth at the end. Haha. Watchable movie. The cast did a good job. I enjoyed it. Give it a try.

Why is it classified as terror!?
Mrojaspoison17 August 2022
I am disappointed, I was looking forward to a good horror story.

But I do lo ve seeing Tenoch Huerta on screen, he is good. But the leading girl... her scream was so bad, that it ruined the rest of the movie for me. Also the rest of the actors are not amazing. Too slow for my taste.
