Stale plot with quirky dialogue
Jackbv12328 June 2021
The overall plot is pure formula according to what you see on Hallmark (even though technically it's not Hallmark). Woman who wants a promotion goes to hometown to plan a wedding for her mom. There she hires a guy to cater but barters her CPA services for his handyman skills. And her boyfriend of three years neglects her. There are tons of the usual plot devices thrown in, like he was almost married or the wedding venue is a barn. It's like following a checklist.

Even the inevitable conflict between the leads was on the checklist. I figured that was what was coming. Metaphorically it was textbook.

The details between the lines is where this movie strays from the usual, especially the dialogue. The leads banter constantly, but it's a bid odd.

I love Morgan Kohan and she puts a lot of her personality into the movie. She's very upbeat. (I wonder if she realizes how many times she did that cutsie head tilt look that says "you're going to do what I want and like it".)

I can see why a lot of people didn't like this movie, but for me the relationship between the leads carried it, but barely.

Where's the love?
FridayGal6 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Besides the cliche plot devices already mentioned, I was disappointed that a key plot device wasn't followed. Since the plot - even the title - centered around the Mom's wedding, I really thought there would be the traditional kiss at the altar...Nope! They stood there - not shoulder to shoulder - and faced their guests, not even holding hands. I'm hard pressed to remember any affection between the couple at all. Bummer.

A little bit boring
amarnold-5245325 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This movie must have been shot during COVID because it is lacking a lot. There was no physical touch at all between the mother and fiancé. It was awkward. The strangest thing is that the daughter never met the future stepfather before she came down for the wedding. I thought that was strange. The chef had no personality and it was a struggle to love his character. His dancing scene was funny though because he had zero rhythm. LOL. His brother was cool though. The lead actress' boyfriend was a stick in the mud. He didn't deserve her at all. This movie was okay. I wouldn't go out of my way to see it again though.

We're the mom and future step-dad weirdly distant?
jkrizm676022 July 2022
It seems like the two actors playing the mom and future step-dad didn't get along or were repulsed by one another or something... it was weird how little they touched one another for playing a couple that was supposed to marry. And, at the ceremony, they were about 4 feet away from one another the entire ceremony and he never 'kissed the bride'. It was super weird. Add to that weirdness was the awkward dialogue and the fact that for some reason the daughter didn't want to tell the caterer about the break up because she 'doesn't want to complicate things'. Her actions were the very definition of complicated. It's hard to be a fan of this movie.

Watch It

Was it formulaic? Yes, and still a charming movie, somewhat understated in that it's not saccharine or overly sentimental. I loved the personal evolution of the main characters as well as theirs as a couple. Would definitely rewatch.

Well-lit Covid-filmed movie
SunnyDaise8 August 2022
This movie is nothing original but a solid production filmed under Covid regulations, so don't expect lots of hugs etc! The stand out feature for me is the visual quality - lighting and filmography is stunning at times, even in many of the quite mundane scenes. I would watch again.

Nice Date Night Movie

Warning: Spoilers
And thought it looked interesting. We will watch movies like this because we've seen him and they are formulaic. Formula was really good. That surprised us. That surprised me. I enjoyed the soft, subtle, unrushed thing that was happening on the screen. I enjoyed the nice light touches of love and romance. I enjoyed sitting there watching this thing on phone with the older couple. I enjoyed watching the main story with the younger couple unfold a little bit of head of the old couple. It was a great story and the lead female looked a lot like Melissa Sue Gilbert. I enjoyed the relationship of the two brothers over the barbecue shack. It was pleasant like a warm fire on a cold night. The scenery was beautiful.
